  • Almora Ki Famous Bal Mithai & Singhori | Uttarakhand Food Tour
Bal Mithai (बाल मिठाई) is a sweet resembling a brown chocolate-like fudge, made with evaporating khoya and cane sugar. When this mixture cools, it is cut into pieces and coated with white sugar balls. The sweet is hugely popular in the state of Uttarakhand, especially around Almora.
Bal Mithai originated probably about a century ago. Over the years, Bal Mithai has found home in many Kumaoni stories and folklore, arising from the milieu of Kumaon, as evident from the memoirs of noted Hindi writer, Shivani, wherein she reminiscences, the Almora Bazaar, and the lane filled with smells of locally made sweets, and the shop of Joga Lal Shah Halwai, who is said to have invented the sweet, made with milk from nearby Phalsima village. The sweet was then coated in sugar dipped posta or khas khas seeds. Over the years, with rapid commercialization, local shopkeepers have replaced the original khas khas sugar balls, with plain sugar balls.
There are various shops in Mall Road and Lal Bazaar in Almora who make these sweets. Khim Singh Mohan Singh Rautela Sweets in Almora is famous in the whole Uttarakhand for their distinct Bal Mithai and Singhori.
Indian shuttler Lakshya Sen gifted Prime Minister Narendra Modi Almora’s famous Bal Mithai, when he met with him at his residence in New Delhi in May 2022. The sweet was from Khim Singh Mohan Singh Rautela Sweets. Apparently the Prime Minister, while having a telephonic interaction with the Indian men’s badminton team following their historical Thomas Cup triumph, had requested Sen to bring him the sweet dish, and he complied.
