If you're as old as I am, that now makes 4 Triple Crown winners (Secretariat, Seattle Slew, Affirmed, & AP) I have experienced in my lifetime. I have never been able to see any of them in the flesh, though, much less have the honor of petting one! However, I did get to see, & pet, the great John Henry and Forego, when they were at the Horse Park in Lexington many moons ago. Thank you so much for posting this, Todd, and allowing us to share in your experiences. I do hope I'm not the only one who welled up with tears while I watched it. What a magnificent animal. If anyone knows if there will be any way for the public to see AP in the future, please let me know. I love American pharaoh to bits 😍🐴 he is truly one of the most amazing horses ever and as I was watching him at the Kentucky derby I was just so amazed by how stretched his stride is! Also if you don't mind me asking I was wandering how they travel in airplanes sounds like fun if I were a horse! Amazing video thank you for taking care of one of the most amazing racehorses love you AP!!
+breyerandhorsegirl 1 They actually ride well (for the most part) on planes. In fact, people ship cross-country and overseas all the time. I don't believe they suffer from jet lag as we do. I may be wrong but you saw how AP came off the jet. Calm, cool, collected. Posing for photogs like it was just another day.
Amazing video! Thanks so much for sharing. Can't imagine what it must've felt like being in the presence of such a divine animal! How on earth you kept the camera steady is beyond me, I would've been shaking like a leaf! I would've kept touching and touching him the entire ride! Great stuff man!

This was very cool to watch :-) If anyone ever has to move a horse I highly recommend you. You moved ours from Smithtown NY to Polk City FL in 2008 and though no police escort like this handsome guy I know she was treated just as well by you.
Thank you. It was even more cool to film. BTW, we pretend we have a police escort with every load. Every hose, no matter their size or respective value are treated just like AP. Even those mindless spirited ones that want to damage everything and anyone in their path. They get the red carpet. They don't know it but they pay our salaries. Shh! Don't tell.
He definitely knows he accomplished something that made us humans feel very good! All the triple crown winners had great minds, AP fit the triple crown mold perfectly! And now the future Grand Slam winners will have to fit AP's mold! What an Amazing Animal!

Maybe it would. But, you still have one and are transporting one. You're one of us! Be safe out there. Watch out for those ignorant 4-wheelers who will smile at and take pictures of your horse and then cut in front of you and jam on their brakes for no reason
Oswaldo Lafee There are a lot of competitive horses who travel with a companion. Sounds like that is exactly what this pony is. Just there to keep him calm and keep him company.
Oswaldo Lafee Horses, like dogs are pack-animals. They prefer to be with and travel with others. Few enjoy being alone. Especially thoroughbreds who are high strung to begin with. As we unload our truck, those still on will get nervous and anxious. They'll cry, kick the walls and just throw a fit. The last one really throws his or herself until we're leading them off where they know they'll soon be with others. They can't afford to have a horse of AP's caliber going ballistic and risking injury. Smokey is AP's Valium without having to use actual drugs.
Great job if you can handle having to run 24/7 with a co-driver and never want to see home. On average I'm home 3 days a month. Other teams are home a little more often. Some stay out longer. The money is pretty good especially if you want to run hard like I do. It's not for everyone. Especially if you have a family and children. Still interested? brookledge.com/ and click on "employment".
There's something about American Pharoah that makes him not just a special Thoroughbred but a special horse. I'm 73 years old and have seen a few TC winners but there's something about this horse that brings tears to my eyes everytime. His majesty, his bearing, his attitude, and he's a gorgeous horse. Over the years I've hated seeing him get fat and bulky. I don't understand why they're allowed to get fat.
@@MrBangbangjim I thought I was pretty clear. But... AP is the past. Done and over with. Even his stud fees have been paid. Everyone who was invested into AP such as owners and trainers are already focusing their full attention on the future winners and hopefully the next triple crown winner. As they move on the overall care for the past winners diminishes little by little, which is how they could eventually get fat and out of top physical condition. To compound the matter, AP is no longer under a strict diet and physical training regiment. All he needs to do is breed. Hopefully produce. But, that depends more on the mare than his overall physical condition.
@@MrBangbangjim WOW! I love the internet! I attempted to explain my comment, you didn't like it so now we have to get personal. Nice chatting with you lady. Have a nice life.
Yes, AP knows you can tell by how he poses for pictures. He also has that cool horse demeanor. I've taken care of a few horse's. One other one I cared for was like AP in attitude, but not on AP's level as far as a Super Star.
hey dumb question but I'm not american. how long was the flight? in australia horses go from melbourne to brisbane by truck but when a horse from the stable i work at went from sydney to perth we flew him.
Toxicpot76 I would love to shoot more. Its hard to film as I am 1 of 2 drivers and if I am not loading/unloading horses I am either driving or sleeping. That was the first time I actually rode inside the trailer... I do take pictures of various horses during transit when we stop to water/fuel or switch drivers and send those pictures to their owners so they know their loved one is doing well. I'll add a little text comment speaking to their owner as if I were the horse speaking to them rather than as myself, which adds a cool little spin on things
was the other horse there his stable buddy? what was that ones name? i wonder if american pharoah's owners call him something else for short other then " american pharoah"? like a pet name or something.......
+katana489 The other famous horse with AP is "Smokey The Pony". Smokey has his own Facebook page and at one point he was running for President. As for pet names I've heard AP and Pharoah.. Of course, "Cha-Ching!" works too
Todd - or anyone - do you know if horses, as people, get air/carsick? To the detriment of their health? I thought of this when I saw he was riding "backwards" in the trailer.
+Salice McCool In this video we are shipping in what is called a stall and a half. It is similar to how a horse is placed in cross-ties (chains on either side of halter) for grooming at their barn. Some ride facing forward and others backward. Some ride better facing one way or another but only a very small handful. We prefer to ship in a box stall (no ties) which allows the horse to move around freely in an enclosed area. They can walk in circles if they wish. Most of the time (in box stalls) they stand sideways or head to one side of the trailer and butt to the other (rather than forward or backward). This has no effect on them. They come off the truck just as they went on. Ready to frolic, ready to socialize and they only need a short time between transit to race time to run. Also, we use stall and a half's when it is a shorter trip because they don't really get to move around much. The longer the ride the more you want them to move so they don't stiffen up from lack of movement. We wouldn't use a stall and a half to take a horse from coast to coast. That's where box stalls really come in handy. Anything over 12-hours a box stall is the best. Our trucks can ship 15 single stalls or 12 stall and a half's or 8 box stalls. Prices vary. The customer decides what is best for their horse based on the horse, the distance and what they feel like paying for. We take it from there. Horses are flown all over the world. They typically come off the plane just as AP did in this video. Healthy and good to go. I don't think they experience the same things we do. And if they do, it appears to be considerably less. Hope this helps, Todd
+Todd McMahon Thanks for the info. It occurred to me that as horses can't vomit except under extreme circumstances, we wouldn't know if they suffered motion sickness, but that because of the placement of their eyes - which take in and process much more "split" or "chopped up" images than ours - it's very unlikely that they do. I suppose that in addition to keeping them from developing stiff muscles, allowing them to move around as you do also helps prevent deep vein thrombosis. >> I was happy to learn that American Pharoah is quite fond of his stable pony, Smokey; poor Billy Silver's love for "his" horse, Secretariat, was, sadly, unrequited! (Was that you who got nipped??)
@@salicemccool9268 Yes, that was me. Smokey wasn't too thrilled with my taking the wind from his face in addition to Pharoah stealing all the thunder of winning the Crown. It wasn't a spiteful nibble mind you. Just a little suggestion to step aside and allow him a little basking too before we reached Churchill.
Some do. But, with all horses repetition cures that. You would be surprised by how many horses are flown back and forth all over the country and overseas on a regular basis.
Yeah, I'm the tall dorky one in the section of video I didn't actually film. And to clarify, despite being a trucker with a tan cap I'm actually a pretty nice guy. At least my mom thinks so. lol
@@ToddMcMahon352 you're more than a nice guy - you're a friend of The Pharoah!!! Best of luck now and in the future. P.S. I wasn't implying you being a "dork" or anything like that - my joke was, tan cap is barely in the video, hence, you in the tan cap? Peace.

Todd - I've heard Pharoah is very "pet" like and very socially connected with people. Is that true? It literally looks like he knows he's being photographed on the jet way and is actually posing for pictures:)
What he got his own plane custom made stairs for horses , fresh grass and custom truck and police escort? Not even Usain Bolt got this kind of treatment. It’s good to be a horsie.
+Jordan Johnsn AWESOME! Smokey is the shit! One of the coolest horses I've ever had the pleasure of transporting. I've transported him several times too!

Maybe it would. But, you still have one and are transporting one. You're one of us! Be safe out there. Watch out for those ignorant 4-wheelers who will smile at and take pictures of your horse and then cut in front of you and jam on their brakes for no reason
Todd McMahon thanks for the amazing video. What's the role of the Pony? just moral support? is this pony always with him?
Oswaldo Lafee There are a lot of competitive horses who travel with a companion. Sounds like that is exactly what this pony is. Just there to keep him calm and keep him company.
TheZobumafoo thanks for the explanation
TheZobumafoo Very good explanation.. Believe it or not, some horses have a goat as a companion.
Just stumbled upon this video- its fantastic & gave me chills! I want to quit my job & do this job instead....where do I apply?! :)
Not all people are involved in taking care,so great Video
9- horse trailer for 2 horses!! Kinda overkill , but safe trip and that’s all that matters 😬👏🏼👏🏼
All the bills have been paid ten fold. Owners and trainers are already focused on tomorrows next TC hopeful.
@@ToddMcMahon352 HUH?
@@MrBangbangjim I thought I was pretty clear. But... AP is the past. Done and over with. Even his stud fees have been paid. Everyone who was invested into AP such as owners and trainers are already focusing their full attention on the future winners and hopefully the next triple crown winner. As they move on the overall care for the past winners diminishes little by little, which is how they could eventually get fat and out of top physical condition. To compound the matter, AP is no longer under a strict diet and physical training regiment. All he needs to do is breed. Hopefully produce. But, that depends more on the mare than his overall physical condition.
@@ToddMcMahon352 Nice try Todd honey but I still love the horse so get over it. So are you fat and over the hill too? Probably.
@@MrBangbangjim WOW! I love the internet! I attempted to explain my comment, you didn't like it so now we have to get personal. Nice chatting with you lady. Have a nice life.
..for 17:25 I got to live with AP.. Ty TODD!
+Jinx Mae My pleasure.
Can someone please tell me what’s going on?
A special treatment to a very special horse.
Tom and I actually treat every horse we transport the same as if they were AP. We just don't film all of them. I love my job
I don't anything about horses, but for those of you that do can you tell me if this horse knows he is a super star?
Yes, AP knows you can tell by how he poses for pictures. He also has that cool horse demeanor. I've taken care of a few horse's. One other one I cared for was like AP in attitude, but not on AP's level as far as a Super Star.
hey dumb question but I'm not american. how long was the flight? in australia horses go from melbourne to brisbane by truck but when a horse from the stable i work at went from sydney to perth we flew him.
Toxicpot76 ps thanks for this vid. i was watching this top boy win all three legs in australia. amazing horse.
Toxicpot76 The flight from New York to Louisville, Kentucky was only a couple hours. By truck it would have taken 14 to 15 hours.
Todd McMahon ah nice bit like sydney to perth then! thanks for the reply mate. would be good to see more vids like this from ya.
Todd McMahon ah well you def picked a bloody good time to ride in the trailer haha! thanks for the replys mate!
The Champ Is Here
Yes I was. But I have since left the building. J/K
was the other horse there his stable buddy? what was that ones name? i wonder if american pharoah's owners call him something else for short other then " american pharoah"? like a pet name or something.......
+katana489 The other famous horse with AP is "Smokey The Pony". Smokey has his own Facebook page and at one point he was running for President. As for pet names I've heard AP and Pharoah.. Of course, "Cha-Ching!" works too
i would think to maybe "LUNCH TIME! OATS!" might work too. he's a beautiful horse with a personality:)
Hope this helps,
Todd
+Todd McMahon
Thanks for the info.
Do horses spook when traveling by plane? I know Dusty would be nervous.
Some do. But, with all horses repetition cures that. You would be surprised by how many horses are flown back and forth all over the country and overseas on a regular basis.
Todd, is that you w/ the tan cap? JK... excellent video.
Peace.
@@bishlap No offense taken. I wanted to say "I'm the tall dorky dude" but felt that might offend me. So I mentioned the tan cap to force people to look around for me. I'm weird that way. Yeah, I'm here. If you can point me out. If not, look for the tan cap
I saw Smokey sold a week ago at an Auction with a painting of him & AP for $85,000.
Glad his buddy Smokey was with him😬
I wonder what the plane used as a callsign carrying such a cool passenger
Bad ass stud coming to a mare near you soon
Todd - I've heard Pharoah is very "pet" like and very socially connected with people. Is that true? It literally looks like he knows he's being photographed on the jet way and is actually posing for pictures:)
Ron Falcone He totally is posing. Loves attention. Knows he's awesome!
Thanks and best of luck with America's horse:-)!
What he got his own plane custom made stairs for horses , fresh grass and custom truck and police escort? Not even Usain Bolt got this kind of treatment. It’s good to be a horsie.
beast
I am not!
Horse sense is the thing a horse has which keeps it from betting on people. W.C Fields

AP isn't chopped beef either
Nice to see brookledge didn’t crash into tex suttons airplane this time
Relax and Watch ..... : )
Smokey is my horses full brother!
+Jordan Johnsn AWESOME! Smokey is the shit! One of the coolest horses I've ever had the pleasure of transporting. I've transported him several times too!
Odd they left a chain over his nose in the trailer
It was only a short ride so why not? They didn't tie him up with it. That would be odd and dangerous
I just haven't felt the emotion, the passion and the overall excitement with Justify as I did with American Pharoah. I don't mean me, I mean all the other players. Owners, trainer, jockey, horse, ...very subdued and matter of fact.
11:31 anyone else hear that?
In am now an apple user. No more annoying and inappropriate "DROID!" call outs at the wrong time
