Old carpenter trick: when shooting pins always shoot at an angle so the pins actually lock the piece in place rather than let the piece slide on the headless pins.
One of the great advantages of doing things yourself, is that time doesn't matter and you can build something exactly the way you want.
If it takes a little longer...or the materials cost a little more...you make it up on labor costs. 👍👍

@2:45 just use a corrugated nailer… I use it to pre assemble wainscoting rails too… I basically put the pocket hole jig on the shelf a few years ago

@@FinishCarpentryTVfully agree never go into debt save and do things slowly. That way you appreciate the finished project for longer and you are less inclined to keep changing the decoration every 2nd year and increasing the cost. Whereas a quick touch up and refresh will last longer and quality never goes out of style.

Yes I have a question. Do you use caulking on the inside and outside of the trim? You don't typically show that part so I was wondering. Also maybe you can make a video in the future to show your , methods. I'm interested in all of it, even how you cut the tip of the caulking.
Yes I am very experienced in the prep/paint work. I can definitely make a video on that soon. To answer your question I cut the tip straight.

Good choice- sometimes something less over the top is better in the end- and pairs well with your classic white oak doors. Nice job!

The backband is the easiest and cheapest way to add prominence to a casing. Good looking trim job.

Looks great!! The main thing about all of this, like the pocket screws, is you are spending the time and doing it for yourself to enjoy! People dont pay for that because 99% of people dont care and wont even notice the detail in the casing let alone the finer detail. I am amazed by details like this, but most people would say "looks like trim to me, i dont know whats special"

Really liked this video!!!! We did a similar trim with the Greek reveal back ban molding. Wish you would do a video on finishing (prep / paint). We had this 1/16 gap between the back ban and reveal molding. Would like to hear how you deal with this. Thanks
You see, a smaller scale door trim looks a lot better with that door and wall. I like your design. I may even copy the design myself next time I need a formal door trim.

Hey brother, I have been watching your channel for the past few years. I am happy you found that Mdf is not the greatest material to use in construction. Now that you found a good supplier or real material it's a great step up. Now try to make it work so the the miters and joints don't have to be sanded to be made correct. Try working with refinished Cherry or Walnut and putting in the ridiculous amount of nails and see how it looks.

Regarding using pocket screws: I do the same on my house but let the glue dry and then install. AND, on a doorway, I glue and clamp the trim to the jamb without using nails which is not feasible unless you're doing it at home. It's nice to not have nail holes to deal with. It paints up so nice.

Outstanding work..... Little tip , you don't need to measure architrave. Cut the mitre long turn it upside down (miter poit on floor) and mark the bottom of the architrave with the desired point at the top of the door lining. No tape measure needed. Love the enthusiasm for your craft. 👍🏻

Clam clamps get them tighter than those screws, hypur or lamello e20 and your set 👍🏻
Got to say I have been screwing my miters together for 30 years or more. After getting used to doing it, the time difference is negligible. And I started to do this because there were no 90-degree corners in the home I was trimming. After doing 2 rooms it became easy and fast, glue and screw. And to this day it is still done that way. Your pocket holes are nice, the way I do them is a quick 45 degree clamp, cross screw each joint 3 screws each, done!

Richard nice work. Are you still using 15ga 2-1/2” nails for that casing besides the 23ga gun for the backband molding? If you don’t mind updating us on what you are using here and the length for these nails that would be cool. Tnx!
I love festool I use it all the time I would recommend if you’re removing material not to use the foam pad so the wood can stay flat. I only use the foam pad when I don’t want to remove material and all you want to achieve is a light sand between coats

Do you ever miscut any trim pieces? Love the video and your choice of trim.. Do homeowners have access to Windsor molding?
Next time try jackmiters on the base layer. Also you can run the backband legs full length and use a butt joint on the backband head. That allows a pocket screw (or 2) there as well.
A freaking sanding rig. I like that. A dewalt shop vac with a Hepa filter and Bosch sanders have done wonders for me. But its bulky, and you have to be perticularly careful with it around finished walls and trim. I never have considered a dedicated rig for sanding. I do want to find a softer hose or some sort of boot to go over the hose.

A plinth block would have been nice. I find that it’s easier to mop the floors, as dirt doesn’t get stuck in the little grooves of the casing! I’m adding plinths myself for that reason.
Does it seem a little bit odd that the laundry room entrance is in the living room? I’m pretty sure I would have tried to find another place for the door, sort of like you moving the fireplace, which I agree with y’all 100%. I remember my dad helping one of his brothers
build a house and the ringer washer had its own little building out back. My first house had the washer and dryer in the garage. My parents had a washer in the kitchen and hung clothes outdoors to dry. We’ve come a long way!
It seems odd on video maybe but it’s really not bad IRL. I think it flows well. 😎 but ideally I agree with you and if I was building a house brand new I don’t think I would consider laundry door near the living room.

We did one where we ripped a top detail of a stock molding put on a different profile on the thin side. Time and money that what we tell every client
You made the right move. The other one looked a little chunky, in my opinion.. maybe if you are installing wainscoting for sure it would look OK. But this one looks just right, specially with the light coming through the door. You will get compliments from everyone.

on Windsor one, when i do this with normal primed pine it really takes alot off and i am left with a sump in the finish
Are you using a pin nailer to attach the smaller inside trim piece?
Do you use different width trim depending on where the door leads? For example, the front door foyer in my mid-century modern house has the entry door and a door that leads to a bedroom/office as well as two closets. I'm thinking about using this casing but leaving it full width around the front door and door that leads to the bedroom/office. The two smaller closet doors would get narrowed trim and outside molding but I would skip the inside molding to draw attention to the fact they serve a different purpose. I would also give the large picture window the full width treatment as well as the doors that lead to the kitchen and dining room. Thoughts?

@@paulhopkins1905 I would say the 3M Xtract is on par with Festool when it comes to the balance, vibration and function of the system. The Surfprep is a good but niche tool. I like the Festool system of parts, tools and sustainers. I like the fact that I can go to a local store and get what I need. I like the fact that I can call Festool USA in Indiana and talk to a real person and get my older stuff rebuilt.
@@rjthomasindyusa Assuming you're in US as every European contractor knows Mafell is the gold standard for track saws and many other specialist wood working tools. It's a pity they are so hard to get in the states and Australia. However I'd confidently rank Festool ahead of Makita for tracksaws.

Knowing where you can reduce effort and cost are a big part of being able to make tasks doable. I'm a big fan of good enough for new construction good enough for my house. I have watched enough of this guy to know he gets stuff done but if everything had to be an 11 before you were done we wouldent ever move on.
It doesn’t take that much longer. Most guys are nickel and diming and the result is what we have as the standard in new construction today. Kinda sux
In my opinion there's levels of quality. Junk, good enough, above average and custom or specialty. Never make junk. The others all have their place. With enough money and time everything could be a designer mansion but sometimes people need what they need and what they can afford. I have respect for the crew that can whip out a new home in less than a week and with enough caulk make everything paintable. Just like I reapect the guys who nails can't be seen on stain finished hardwoods. Each is a skill and each has it's place. I'm happy to live in a house that's keeping me dry with "contractor grade" 2" trim. I also can appreciate the beauty of better stuff. No shame in anyone doing good enough.

No nails into the edge of the jamb? I have some of the same casing and was hoping to see how to nail through the bead. I'm considering drilling pilot holes and hand nailing old school.
I’m able to do it with the 16 or gauge. But I only had the 15 at the house so I will come back with higher gauge nail. No need for pilot hole just need the right angle.
