The guy Cap fought in the beginning (Batroc) is actually George St. Pierre (GSP). Former UFC welterweight and middleweight champion and largely considered to be one of the best pound for pound fighters of all time.
This is true but at the same time I feel dissappointed they didn't give him more protagonism in Infinity/Endgame, I mean he was relegated to being some guy shooting a gun? He had so much potential for a cool mele character fighting alongside cap.

This is one of the most influential movies ever in my mind..because it worked so well. This gave the absolute Greelight in all decisions moving forward..unlike all the nonsense going on today in comics and many TV Shows or movies...we all had no idea in tone, direction change etc. Yet thus blew us away. Obviously we all know the ultimate number success marvel went on too at the box office. This was the shift from origin storie to genre piece ( someone may have a ve better change) but this changed everything! We all knew it when we saw it!
A couple of years ago, a capybara escaped from a local exotic animal park. It was missing for about a month. It was later found dead in somebody's pond on the other side of the county near a National Forest.

Absolutely agree. Reading comics in the 80"s the books became darker with Frank Miller's The Dark Knight Returns and The Punisher. Cap, the eternal boy scout always believing in the good in humanity, I thought was pretty cool, also could kick the a** of most opponents.
@@Logan_Baron Yup. You'll even notice that Cap switches to Savate to fight him "fairly." And fairly kicks his French butt. Having been in WWII Steve would probably have been introduced to Savate, since many US soldiers were. Canonically Steve is expert in just about every kind of martial art known, without being a master of any of them. Hence Shang-Chi is a master of Kung-fu and could beat Cap in that one area, but Steve knows other kinds of martial arts and can switch it up. If they were restricted to la Savate then Cap would almost certainly beat Shang-Chi. That said, Shang-Chi was primarily based on Bruce Lee, who's philosophy of fighting is much like Cap's: Be like water, change to meet circumstances, depend on no style because that limits you, use whatever form you need at the moment. This is also very similar to thoughts in Musashi's _The Book of Five Rings_ where he recommends you be able to strike from any position, and follow no master's teachings blindly. Therefore my example may not be fully cogent.
The winter soldier theme is one of my favorite parts of the movie. The composer implemented a scream in the theme and said that's Bucky trapped inside his own head trying to escape.

This really is one of the top MCU films, it combined a superhero movie with a James Bond flick. Captain America turned out to have the strongest trilogy in the MCU, in my opinion. Please don't be too hard on New Jersey. We have beautiful beaches, millions of acres of untouched wilderness, rivers, lakes and mountains. Also, the light bulb, motion picture cameras, submarines, color TV, the solar cell, baseball, ice cream cones, cell phones, air conditioning, the vacuum cleaner, and M&Ms were all invented here. Also the first organized football game (Rutgers vs Army), the modern firearm (the Patterson Revolver by Colt), tons of entertainment and celebrities, the events that inspired Jaws, the Revolution was heavily fought here, the Hindenburg Disaster, the list goes on, NJ is a great place that people love to trash for no reason.
The Winter Soldier has strong spy thriller vibes and is definitely one of the best MCU movie (if not the best). Not only a great super-hero movie but a great movie and absolutely destined to become a classic.
"On your left" is a meme in itself. Cap is the best character, the best hero in comics. His unwavering sense of duty and loyalty is unmatched, he not only believes in knowing the difference between right and wrong, and knowing that you should do the right thing but lives it.
Depending on my mood and the day of the week, this is often my favorite MCU film. It’s just such a great spy thriller, that just happens to have superheroes in it, instead of a superhero movie trying to be a spy thriller.
It dances between both very gracefully. I think most Marvel adaptations that have been successful found a way to tone that line. Daredevil works well with crime procedural elements, making the Ant Man films more like heist movies helped give them a unique voice and charm as well.
There is a heartwrenching thing in how precise a casting choice Robert Redford was for Pierce, the mind wipe process they use was clearly not perfect, so they assigned someone as his handler that looked a good deal like Steve. When he was young he was just as blonde, blue-eyed, and strong-jawed as Steve is, and it could be used as a lever to make Bucky more likely to trust him. It probably kept him a lot calmer than he would have otherwise been as well.
"Because I'm with you till the end of the line" is what Bucky said to young Steve Rodgers in the first Captain America. Cap was trying to jog his memory.
When this movie first came out in theaters, Hail HYDRA was trending everywhere. First job I had in high school, my friends and I worked at a car wash. One car we detailed was a Rolls Royce, and its hood ornament was the HYDRA symbol. We kinda geeked out a little because the movie had just released and we talked about seeing it after work. So we all kinda got in the mood, starting telling each other, "Hail HYDRA." What we did not expect was for the car's owner and side passenger to come up behind us and shout "HAIL HYDRA!" It even spread in school. You return a book to the librarian, "Hail HYDRA." You clap a friend on the back for scoring a point on the field, "Hail HYDRA." You hug your girlfriend or boyfriend in the hallway, "Hail HYDRA." Even passing notes in class; I wrote to someone who wanted to copy my answers, "HAIL HYDRA."
Growing up, I didn’t have a lot of friends my age. Mostly I hung around the WWII vets at church and other places and they became my close friends and sadly as I grew, they all died. So when Cap mentions his Barbershop Quartet, it kinda hit too close to home. Cap is of course, my favorite Avenger.

What Marvel Studios achieved with multiple story lines across the first 12 years set in different genres (spy thriller, magic, fantasy), is just remarkable. Never in the history of cinema has any studio achieved such success. Growing up I used to think comics would be impossible to do on the big screen, and yet here we are! Thank you Marvel.
So it’s not fully explained, but the experiments done to Bucky by Hydra and the Soviet Union included making him a super soldier like Cap, trying to perfect the early imperfect version of the serum that was given to Red Skull. And it worked. Okay, so Zola revealed that Hydra hidden within Shield has been manipulating things and causing “accidents” such as _the death of Tony’s parents._ Steve is aware that Hydra got Tony’s parents killed. Remember that.
Word. Those same experiments done by HYDRA and the USSR also come back into play farther down the road in another MCU film. It’s something that has profound effects across the MCU as a whole. 👍🏼
Hydra is so adaptable able to move from infiltrating Nazi Germany to infiltrating the USSR. I guess the only real differences between the two were their economic and racial politics, two things that Hydra didn't care about.
About ten years ago I was at my sisters house in Pennsylvania for Christmas. I walked into the living room one day and my brother in law, who was a staff sergeant in the Marines and did two tours of duty in Vietnam, and his son, himself a 20-year retired Air Force sergeant, were sitting down watching this movie. That's how good it is.

Before they made the eye thing stupid in Captain Lost-Her-Marbles, they did it so well in this movie. The damaged eye doesn't see, but it still has a retina, and that retina is still unique. So clever. Nick Fury at his best.
Here we go! I've been waiting for this one! This is my top favorite MCU movie. We got Scarlett Johansson back as Natasha Romanoff aka Black Widow. We got the introduction of one of my favorite characters Anthony Mackie as Sam Wilson aka Falcon. And one of the biggest twist in the MCU: Bucky is alive, and is the Winter Soldier! I really like how this movie immediately explains how Bucky survived the fall. Being experimented on by Hydra before Steve found him in the first Captain America movie. The elevator fight, and both of the highway chase scenes are a couple of my favorite moments. Up next: Get ready for some great music in "Guardians of the Galaxy". This is one of the best Marvel movies imo. It's basically the Bourne Identity, but I think that makes it stand out in the MCU. Also, Vicky looks similar to a young ScarJo
I have to say, watching this made me remember why I was so excited during this era of the MCU. It wasn't quite as huge as it is now, and this was the first time a huge cinematic universe was attempted. You could see the threads coming together, the crossover and rewards for the fans who are sticking it out. Yeah the MCU is still good, but you can see the shared universe coming now, but back then when it was just starting, such an exciting time to be a Marvel comics fan, and seeing the stuff you used to read back in middle school, highschool, college hell as an adult, being translated to the big screen so successfully. Can't wait to see more of these as you continue your tour of the MCU

What i found interesting is that Anthony was extremely disappointed that he didn't get to have the more colorful falcon suit from the comics. Many super hero actors want the suits toned down feeling embarrassed. He didn't get his wish until his mini series.
18:49 This is kind of a strange thing, but I guess it makes sense that the shield is big and bright, so it makes an obvious target, as opposed to the dark colors of Cap’s outfit extremities. There’s a Batman comic where he takes a shot to the chest, right on the Bat logo, and there’s armor plating underneath it. He thinks to himself (monologuing to the reader) that of course that’s why he put a target on his chest - he can’t armor his head.
Love this movie! Some background info on the "boss battle" on the ship at the beginning. Steve is fighting a villain played by real life UFC champion George St. Pierre. All of those moves are all him. Just a bit of a fun fact. :) Along with that when the computer is targeting possible future "heroes" to target, you see it targets Peter Parker and Doctor Strange, to name a couple, both future super heroes in the MCU of course

4:07 Her main Mission was to help the hostages to the rescue as Rumlow said in the Comm's there are still Active Hostiles & Batroc. She wasn't responding to her commander i.e. CAPTAIN cos of her side mission by Fury. We get to know why he needed the intel but at the moment but It was a risk as Hostages lives & team were still in the line.
The name comes from the Vietnam war hearings, where they talked about fair weather 'Summer' soldiers who folded as soon as things get tough and the 'Winter' soldiers who never quit.

This is still my favourite MCU movie (Guardians of the Galaxy is a close second, but they are very different). I'm a big fan of the old Captain America from the comics, and this movie does a great job of showcasing why, from his principles to his capabilities. This is also the best movie for Black Widow, which is a bit of a shame in a way. That they never greenlit a solo film for her right after this (and _Lucy_ which showed Scarjo had the star power to put butts in theatre seats) is still one of the biggest missteps of the MCU. I think she should have had her own film between this and Avengers 2 for sure.

Second: The dude that Cap fights on the ship is a comic villain known as Batroc the Leaper, a master of Savate: French kickboxing Third: A "winter soldier" is one who endures hardship and doesn't give up no matter how hard things get. It's a reversal of the "summer soldier" from one of Thomas Paine's writings about how in times of crisis, the summer soldier would run and abandon their duty to the nation/ideals. That describes Cap perfectly. Bucky is called the Winter Soldier mainly because HYDRA would keep him on ice between missions, hence his lack of aging just like Cap.

I think that this is the best of all of the MCU films. Don't get me wrong, I love several of them. But this one just hits every mark. The elevator fight scene reminded me of my previous favorite fight scene in a movie, the one in the train compartment in the second James Bond film, "From Russia, With Love" (that's also a perfect fight scene in a confined area). BTW, the actress playing the woman that Black Widow disguised herself as is Jenny Agutter. She's 8 years older than me. She was also in An American Werewolf in Paris, Logan's Run, and the cult classic film "Walkabout". I was only 11 when Walkabout came out. She should be about 70 now and she's still acting and she still looks good.
Winter Soldier is literally one of the top MCU movies for most fans. Glad it kept you guessing and that your guesses were wrong. As they were for us in the theaters. :) The rest of the MCU movies are pretty good stuff from here on out. :)

Winter soldier refers to soldiers who would fight during the harshness of winter back in the days when they could go home and tend to the farm until Spring and could choose to fight again if inclined during the warmer months. A winter soldier is a fighter that does not stop, kind of the opposite of a fair weather friend.

Still my favorite standalone hero movie in the MCU, it’s amazing. Also, this is the first Marvel movie directed by the Russo brothers, it’s the reason they direct the next Cap movie and the following TWO Avengers movies, all of them absolutely top tier.
It is indeed Savate, which does not have any accents. Sometimes "Savate-boxe française" or "la Savate." The word means "old shoe" or "boot." In it as a sport where kick points are only scored by strikes with the foot, not the shins or knees. "Savate-boxe française" literally means "French shoe boxing." It can and often does include strikes with the hand, but is primarily a kickboxing style. When Batroc confronts Steve as "I thought you were more than just a shield" he replies by switching to Savate and kicking Batroc's butt.

Robert Redford starred in Three Days of the Condor, a 1975 thriller about a CIA analyst who accidentally uncovers a conspiracy by a rogue element of the CIA and goes on the run after his coworkers are murdered. So, some obvious similarities to the plot of Winter Soldier and it's why they cast Redford as Pierce. The actress who beats up Pierce is Jenny Agutter, who starred in An American Werewolf in London and Logan's Run, among others.
In the comics Falcon has been a loyal partner and friend to Cap since the 70s. Everything you saw here lays the groundwork for Civil War and the next phase of the MCU. By the way, remember Falcon’s line, “On your left,” it’s gonna play an important part much later. 😉 PS-You have the cutest sneeze.

Now would be a great time to start Marvels Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. There shouldn't be any big spoilers unless you stop watching the movies and watch multiple seasons right away. I don't know if reactions would get worthwhile view numbers, but you would enjoy the series, and if reacting doesn't work out you could always binge it off camera, although there could be minor spoilers/refences if you watch, say, all of the first two seasons before Age of Ultron... Even then, any spoilers from here on are fairly minor.

There are real problems with using the name "Winter Soldier " for this character. The phrase comes from Thomas Paine, who wrote a pamphlet to be read to Washington's troops at Valley Forge:"These are the times that try men's souls. The Summer Soldier, and the Sunshine Patriot, will, in this crisis, shrink from the service of their country. But he that perseveres it now, deserves the thanks and praise of man and woman. " The title "The Winter Soldier Hearings" was used by the Vietnam Veterans Against the War, who held public hearings in which hundreds of veterans testified to war crimes they saw committed by the US in the War." They held a march un which thousands threw the metals they had been awarded in the War over a fence onto the grounds of the Capitol building. So using it for a programmed assassin is really not app, and is the worst thing in an otherwise really good movie, whose message is arguably, at least in the case of Captain America, closer to both Tom Paine and to the Vietnam Veterans Against the War.
Not really. It's only a problem if you only think of Hydra as the "Haha we're evil because we love being bad!" less then 2D type of villains, but they're not. Sure Hyrda is evil, because they do evil things, but Hydra believe themselves to be the good guys. They think they're saving the world and that they're the ones making the hard choices and sacrifices to do so. Look at a lot of what Pierce says, specifically look at the scene with his house keeper; it's clear he doesn't want to kill her, but he believes that he has to so, so he does it.
Sure the character is an assassin, but the name fit with the message of the movie. Though I do think the whole SHIELD is innocent and Hydra secretly infiltrated behind the scenes is a bit of a cop out if we're talking about the US military industrial complex and their war crimes. But hey, its a marvel movie.

The movie represents a tonal shift in the MCU towards mature, gritty storytelling with real-world consequence which roped in many non-superhero enthusiasts. It was made in the style of 1970s political thrillers like "Three Days of the Condor" and "The Parallax View" with a healthy dose of "The Manchurian Candidate". As with all the best espionage films, the story was expertly filled with twists, double-crosses, skullduggery and shocking revelations culminating with an incredible race-against-the-clock crisis. Showing Captain America break faith with the institutions he serves due to his disillusionment with systemic corruption is extraordinary and demonstrates his integrity. The plot is drawn from 'The Winter Soldier' arc of Ed Brubaker's legendary 134-issue run on "Captain America" during the 2000s. Paired with the moody, naturalistic illustrations of Steve Epting, the duo revitalized the character and his supporting cast for post-modern readers. The bold move of resurrecting Bucky Barnes and reframing his legacy was a stroke of brilliance that left an impactful mark on latter-day Marvel comics. The element of SHIELD being infiltrated by subversives is drawn from the 1988 limited series "Nick Fury vs. SHIELD" written by Bob Harras and illustrated by Paul Neary. The Triskelion as the headquarters for SHIELD was lifted directly from Marvel's secondary Ultimate Universe line although the film locates it in DC on the Potomac whereas the comics set it in New York Harbor. Similarly, the technological interpretation of Falcon is a nod to the Ultimate iteration of the character whereas the original Marvel iteration can telepathically communicate with birds and has a glider harness with mylar wings and titanium ribbing. Co-directors Joe and Anthony Russo were untested filmmakers who landed the plum gig after Kevin Feige saw their two-episode stint on the TV sitcom "Community"! Nevertheless, the brothers knocked this film out of the park and were tapped again to continue guiding the good Captain's adventures down the line. The action sequences are phenomenally staged but grounded enough that you feel the weight of each impact and only realize you're watching a superhero film when Steve intermittently exceeds human limits. The opening hostage rescue, the Fury ambush, the sniper attack, the elevator brawl, the Quinjet takedown, the freeway chase, the underpass shoot-out and the climactic Triskelion assault are all top-tier set pieces that are thrilling to watch! Despite wall-to-wall action, there is enough downtime to prevent fatigue, to advance plot like Hydra's insidious long-game and to build character like Steve's bedside scene with a senile Peggy. I especially like the use of the real-life 'Operation: Paperclip' in which 1,500 Nazi scientists and engineers were granted immunity and recruited by the CIA's precursor, the OSS, to work for the US government. In the film, Hydra scientists like Arnim Zola use the opportunity of this brain-drain to embed themselves in SHIELD from its very inception. The cast is remarkable. Steve Rogers comes into sharp focus here and Chris Evans truly made the Captain his own the third time around. Carrying over from "The First Avenger", Sebastian Stan returns as a grimly resurrected James Buchanan 'Bucky' Barnes, Toby Jones lends his voice to the disembodied digital form of Dr. Arnim Zola and Hayley Atwell briefly appears as an aged Peggy Carter. Anthony Mackie makes a strong, likable impression as Sam Wilson aka Falcon as does Emily Van Camp as undercover Agent 13. They join returning allies Scarlett Johansson as Natasha Romanov aka Black Widow, Cobie Smulders as Agent Maria Hill and Samuel L. Jackson as Col. Nick Fury who gets showcased in a hair-raising action sequence all his own! Having an actor of Robert Redford's stature play Alexander Pierce was not only a casting coup but paid tribute to his role in "Three Days of the Condor"! Rounding out the villain roster is Frank Grillo as a pre-Crossbones Brock Rumlow and UFC welterweight champion Georges St.-Pierre as French mercenary Georges Batroc the Leaper, two traditional Cap antagonists. Callan Mulvey plays the itchy trigger-fingered double-agent Jack Rollins. Maximiliano Hernandez as Agent Jasper Sitwell, who was introduced in "Thor" and was seen throughout the saga in films, One-Shots and "Agents of SHIELD" episodes, is revealed as a Hydra sleeper along with Garry Shandling as Senator Stern returning from "Iron Man 2". The head of Hydra himself, Baron Wolfgang von Strucker, played by Thomas Kretschmann, puts in a cameo for the end-credit scene as do the Maximoff twins Pietro and Wanda played by Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Elizabeth Olsen. World Security Council members leave their shadowed holo-conference screens to show up in person this time with European representative Hawley, played by Jenny Agutter, being the only returnee from "Avengers". North American Councilman Rockwell is played by Alan Dale, South Asian Councilman Singh is played by Bernard White and East Asian Councilman Yen is played by Chin Han. Steven Culp and Nestor Serrano have bit parts as irate Congressional Committee members who grill Natasha. Gary Sinise lends his voice to the Captain America Smithsonian exhibit as narrator. TRIVIA: 1. Nick Fury relates that his grandfather was an elevator operator which is what Samuel L. Jackson's real-life grandfather did for a living. 2. When Alexander Pierce opens his refrigerator, a jar of Newman's Own sauce is clearly visible as an homage to the two times Redford and Paul Newman shared the screen. 3. Steve's catch-up list differed by country but had seven fixed items: Thai food, Star Wars, Star Trek, Nirvana, Rocky, Rocky II and Troubleman. The countries for which items were added to the list include the US, the UK, Australia, Italy, France, Spain, Russia, Brazil, South Korea, Mexico and the Spanish-speaking countries of South America collectively. 4. Nick Fury's tombstone bears the epitaph "The path of the righteous man. Ezekiel 25:17". This was Jules Winnfield's favorite verse in "Pulp Fiction", a character Jackson is famous for playing. 5. The Winter Soldier's moniker comes from the Thomas Paine quote that "the summer soldier and sunshine patriot will, in this crisis, shrink from the service of their country; but he that stands by it now, deserves the love and thanks of man and woman." The guy Cap fought in the beginning (Batroc) is actually George St. Pierre (GSP). Former UFC welterweight and middleweight champion and largely considered to be one of the best pound for pound fighters of all time.
GSP is still my favorite MMA fighter ever. His moves were so crazy elegant that it almost wasn't like watching a human being at all.

This is one of the most influential movies ever in my mind..because it worked so well. This gave the absolute Greelight in all decisions moving forward..unlike all the nonsense going on today in comics and many TV Shows or movies...we all had no idea in tone, direction change etc. Yet thus blew us away. Obviously we all know the ultimate number success marvel went on too at the box office. This was the shift from origin storie to genre piece ( someone may have a ve better change) but this changed everything! We all knew it when we saw it!

Absolutely agree. Reading comics in the 80"s the books became darker with Frank Miller's The Dark Knight Returns and The Punisher. Cap, the eternal boy scout always believing in the good in humanity, I thought was pretty cool, also could kick the a** of most opponents.

Just a perfect movie in every way. Nobody expected this to be as good as it was and the Russo Brothers knocked it out of the park.
Having the Russo brothers direct Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame was a great choice by Kevin Feige and crew.
Batroc doesn't use capoeira, but savate, a form of French kickboxing, with his particular style focusing heavily on kicks.
It's more Muay Thai or Thai Boxing, Kickboxing is very different in practice. Yes I know I'm splitting hairs.
In the comics, it's specifically said to be Savate.

@@Logan_Baron Yup. You'll even notice that Cap switches to Savate to fight him "fairly." And fairly kicks his French butt. Having been in WWII Steve would probably have been introduced to Savate, since many US soldiers were. Canonically Steve is expert in just about every kind of martial art known, without being a master of any of them. Hence Shang-Chi is a master of Kung-fu and could beat Cap in that one area, but Steve knows other kinds of martial arts and can switch it up. If they were restricted to la Savate then Cap would almost certainly beat Shang-Chi.
That said, Shang-Chi was primarily based on Bruce Lee, who's philosophy of fighting is much like Cap's: Be like water, change to meet circumstances, depend on no style because that limits you, use whatever form you need at the moment. This is also very similar to thoughts in Musashi's _The Book of Five Rings_ where he recommends you be able to strike from any position, and follow no master's teachings blindly. Therefore my example may not be fully cogent.
You gotta love a martial art that was invented to kick pirates into the ocean.
The winter soldier theme is one of my favorite parts of the movie. The composer implemented a scream in the theme and said that's Bucky trapped inside his own head trying to escape.

This really is one of the top MCU films, it combined a superhero movie with a James Bond flick. Captain America turned out to have the strongest trilogy in the MCU, in my opinion. Please don't be too hard on New Jersey. We have beautiful beaches, millions of acres of untouched wilderness, rivers, lakes and mountains. Also, the light bulb, motion picture cameras, submarines, color TV, the solar cell, baseball, ice cream cones, cell phones, air conditioning, the vacuum cleaner, and M&Ms were all invented here. So...you're welcome. 🙂

The Winter Soldier has strong spy thriller vibes and is definitely one of the best MCU movie (if not the best).

"On your left" is a meme in itself. Cap is the best character, the best hero in comics. His unwavering sense of duty and loyalty is unmatched, he not only believes in knowing the difference between right and wrong, and knowing that you should do the right thing but lives it.

Depending on my mood and the day of the week, this is often my favorite MCU film. It’s just such a great spy thriller, that just happens to have superheroes in it, instead of a superhero movie trying to be a spy thriller.
It dances between both very gracefully. I think most Marvel adaptations that have been successful found a way to tone that line. Daredevil works well with crime procedural elements, making the Ant Man films more like heist movies helped give them a unique voice and charm as well.
This is my number one favorite MCU film. It’s just so well written! And that plot twist!
There is a heartwrenching thing in how precise a casting choice Robert Redford was for Pierce, the mind wipe process they use was clearly not perfect, so they assigned someone as his handler that looked a good deal like Steve. When he was young he was just as blonde, blue-eyed, and strong-jawed as Steve is, and it could be used as a lever to make Bucky more likely to trust him. It probably kept him a lot calmer than he would have otherwise been as well.
I didn't even think of that. I just figured since he had a long history of being in spy/political thrillers it was a great touch.
My favorite MCU film. It's the most grounded. Feels like a spy-thriller instead of a superhero movie. Love it.

When this movie first came out in theaters, Hail HYDRA was trending everywhere. First job I had in high school, my friends and I worked at a car wash. One car we detailed was a Rolls Royce, and its hood ornament was the HYDRA symbol. We kinda geeked out a little because the movie had just released and we talked about seeing it after work. So we all kinda got in the mood, starting telling each other, "Hail HYDRA." What we did not expect was for the car's owner and side passenger to come up behind us and shout "HAIL HYDRA!"
It even spread in school. You return a book to the librarian, "Hail HYDRA." You clap a friend on the back for scoring a point on the field, "Hail HYDRA." You hug your girlfriend or boyfriend in the hallway, "Hail HYDRA." Even passing notes in class; I wrote to someone who wanted to copy my answers, "HAIL HYDRA."
Growing up, I didn’t have a lot of friends my age. Mostly I hung around the WWII vets at church and other places and they became my close friends and sadly as I grew, they all died. So when Cap mentions his Barbershop Quartet, it kinda hit too close to home. Cap is of course, my favorite Avenger.

What Marvel Studios achieved with multiple story lines across the first 12 years set in different genres (spy thriller, magic, fantasy), is just remarkable. Never in the history of cinema has any studio achieved such success. Growing up I used to think comics would be impossible to do on the big screen, and yet here we are! Thank you Marvel.
If you’ve enjoyed the MCU thus far, you’ll really enjoy it from here on out. You’re getting to the best of the MCU now.
So it’s not fully explained, but the experiments done to Bucky by Hydra and the Soviet Union included making him a super soldier like Cap, trying to perfect the early imperfect version of the serum that was given to Red Skull. And it worked.
Okay, so Zola revealed that Hydra hidden within Shield has been manipulating things and causing “accidents” such as _the death of Tony’s parents._ Steve is aware that Hydra got Tony’s parents killed. Remember that.

Word. Those same experiments done by HYDRA and the USSR also come back into play farther down the road in another MCU film. It’s something that has profound effects across the MCU as a whole. 👍🏼
Hydra is so adaptable able to move from infiltrating Nazi Germany to infiltrating the USSR. I guess the only real differences between the two were their economic and racial politics, two things that Hydra didn't care about.
About ten years ago I was at my sisters house in Pennsylvania for Christmas. I walked into the living room one day and my brother in law, who was a staff sergeant in the Marines and did two tours of duty in Vietnam, and his son, himself a 20-year retired Air Force sergeant, were sitting down watching this movie. That's how good it is.

Before they made the eye thing stupid in Captain Lost-Her-Marbles, they did it so well in this movie. The damaged eye doesn't see, but it still has a retina, and that retina is still unique. So clever. Nick Fury at his best.

This is my top favorite MCU movie. We got Scarlett Johansson back as Natasha Romanoff aka Black Widow. We got the introduction of one of my favorite characters Anthony Mackie as Sam Wilson aka Falcon. And one of the biggest twist in the MCU: Bucky is alive, and is the Winter Soldier!
I really like how this movie immediately explains how Bucky survived the fall. Being experimented on by Hydra before Steve found him in the first Captain America movie.
The elevator fight, and both of the highway chase scenes are a couple of my favorite moments.
Up next: Get ready for some great music in "Guardians of the Galaxy".

This is one of the best Marvel movies imo. It's basically the Bourne Identity, but I think that makes it stand out in the MCU. Also, Vicky looks similar to a young ScarJo
I have to say, watching this made me remember why I was so excited during this era of the MCU. It wasn't quite as huge as it is now, and this was the first time a huge cinematic universe was attempted. You could see the threads coming together, the crossover and rewards for the fans who are sticking it out. Yeah the MCU is still good, but you can see the shared universe coming now, but back then when it was just starting, such an exciting time to be a Marvel comics fan, and seeing the stuff you used to read back in middle school, highschool, college hell as an adult, being translated to the big screen so successfully. Can't wait to see more of these as you continue your tour of the MCU

What i found interesting is that Anthony was extremely disappointed that he didn't get to have the more colorful falcon suit from the comics. Many super hero actors want the suits toned down feeling embarrassed. He didn't get his wish until his mini series.
18:49 This is kind of a strange thing, but I guess it makes sense that the shield is big and bright, so it makes an obvious target, as opposed to the dark colors of Cap’s outfit extremities. There’s a Batman comic where he takes a shot to the chest, right on the Bat logo, and there’s armor plating underneath it. He thinks to himself (monologuing to the reader) that of course that’s why he put a target on his chest - he can’t armor his head.

This is one of if not the most badass MCU movies, especially with that elevator scene and the overall tone.
This is still my favourite MCU movie (Guardians of the Galaxy is a close second, but they are very different). I'm a big fan of the old Captain America from the comics, and this movie does a great job of showcasing why, from his principles to his capabilities. This is also the best movie for Black Widow, which is a bit of a shame in a way. That they never greenlit a solo film for her right after this (and _Lucy_ which showed Scarjo had the star power to put butts in theatre seats) is still one of the biggest missteps of the MCU. I think she should have had her own film between this and Avengers 2 for sure.

Second: The dude that Cap fights on the ship is a comic villain known as Batroc the Leaper, a master of Savate: French kickboxing
Third: A "winter soldier" is one who endures hardship and doesn't give up no matter how hard things get. It's a reversal of the "summer soldier" from one of Thomas Paine's writings about how in times of crisis, the summer soldier would run and abandon their duty to the nation/ideals. That describes Cap perfectly.
Bucky is called the Winter Soldier mainly because HYDRA would keep him on ice between missions, hence his lack of aging just like Cap.
My second favorite MCU film next to Thor Ragnarok. It is so well produced. Loved your reaction friend.

I cracked up when you immediately commented on Cap "he didn't skip leg day." That's exactly how the Honest Trailer introduced him "Cap is back, and he didn't skip leg day" set to a montage of him kicking people hard as hell.
I think that this is the best of all of the MCU films. Don't get me wrong, I love several of them. But this one just hits every mark. The elevator fight scene reminded me of my previous favorite fight scene in a movie, the one in the train compartment in the second James Bond film, "From Russia, With Love" (that's also a perfect fight scene in a confined area).
BTW, the actress playing the woman that Black Widow disguised herself as is Jenny Agutter. She's 8 years older than me. She was also in An American Werewolf in Paris, Logan's Run, and the cult classic film "Walkabout". I was only 11 when Walkabout came out. She should be about 70 now and she's still acting and she still looks good.
I love seeing The Winter Soldier going all out, he's so dope and still one of my favourite Antagonist in the MCU.

Winter soldier refers to soldiers who would fight during the harshness of winter back in the days when they could go home and tend to the farm until Spring and could choose to fight again if inclined during the warmer months. A winter soldier is a fighter that does not stop, kind of the opposite of a fair weather friend.
This is my favorite MCU movie so I'm glad you thought so much of it.

It is indeed Savate, which does not have any accents. Sometimes "Savate-boxe française" or "la Savate." The word means "old shoe" or "boot." In it as a sport where kick points are only scored by strikes with the foot, not the shins or knees. "Savate-boxe française" literally means "French shoe boxing." It can and often does include strikes with the hand, but is primarily a kickboxing style. When Batroc confronts Steve as "I thought you were more than just a shield" he replies by switching to Savate and kicking Batroc's butt.

Great reaction thanks 😸 This is the point where I feel the MCU starts to get more interesting, and the stories have a bit more depth.

Robert Redford starred in Three Days of the Condor, a 1975 thriller about a CIA analyst who accidentally uncovers a conspiracy by a rogue element of the CIA and goes on the run after his coworkers are murdered. So, some obvious similarities to the plot of Winter Soldier and it's why they cast Redford as Pierce.
The actress who beats up Pierce is Jenny Agutter, who starred in An American Werewolf in London and Logan's Run, among others.

In the comics Falcon has been a loyal partner and friend to Cap since the 70s. Everything you saw here lays the groundwork for Civil War and the next phase of the MCU. By the way, remember Falcon’s line, “On your left,” it’s gonna play an important part much later. 😉

Now would be a great time to start Marvels Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. There shouldn't be any big spoilers unless you stop watching the movies and watch multiple seasons right away. I don't know if reactions would get worthwhile view numbers, but you would enjoy the series, and if reacting doesn't work out you could always binge it off camera, although there could be minor spoilers/refences if you watch, say, all of the first two seasons before Age of Ultron... Even then, any spoilers from here on are fairly minor.
The man at the beginning who fights Cap (with all the kicking) is supposed to be a character called 'Batroc The Leaper' (yes really) who is a master of Savate, a French form of kickboxing. I'm not sure how accurate his fighting is to that style.

Batroc (the lead villain on the ship, played by Georges St. Pierre) employs Savate as his fighting style. It's a kind of French kickboxing.
This is the movie that made me love Captain America. Like I already liked him, I certainly wasn't a hater. But after this I really love his character.

There are real problems with using the name "Winter Soldier " for this character. The phrase comes from Thomas Paine, who wrote a pamphlet to be read to Washington's troops at Valley Forge:"These are the times that try men's souls. The Summer Soldier, and the Sunshine Patriot, will, in this crisis, shrink from the service of their country. But he that perseveres it now, deserves the thanks and praise of man and woman. " The title "The Winter Soldier Hearings" was used by the Vietnam Veterans Against the War, who held public hearings in which hundreds of veterans testified to war crimes they saw committed by the US in the War." They held a march un which thousands threw the metals they had been awarded in the War over a fence onto the grounds of the Capitol building. So using it for a programmed assassin is really not app, and is the worst thing in an otherwise really good movie, whose message is arguably, at least in the case of Captain America, closer to both Tom Paine and to the Vietnam Veterans Against the War.
Not really. It's only a problem if you only think of Hydra as the "Haha we're evil because we love being bad!" less then 2D type of villains, but they're not. Sure Hyrda is evil, because they do evil things, but Hydra believe themselves to be the good guys. They think they're saving the world and that they're the ones making the hard choices and sacrifices to do so. Look at a lot of what Pierce says, specifically look at the scene with his house keeper; it's clear he doesn't want to kill her, but he believes that he has to so, so he does it.
Sure the character is an assassin, but the name fit with the message of the movie. Though I do think the whole SHIELD is innocent and Hydra secretly infiltrated behind the scenes is a bit of a cop out if we're talking about the US military industrial complex and their war crimes. But hey, its a marvel movie.

Hey, Vicky! Marvel films hit their stride with "Winter Soldier" and it remains one of the highest regarded films in the saga. The movie represents a tonal shift in the MCU towards mature, gritty storytelling with real-world consequence which roped in many non-superhero enthusiasts. It was made in the style of 1970s political thrillers like "Three Days of the Condor" and "The Parallax View" with a healthy dose of "The Manchurian Candidate". As with all the best espionage films, the story was expertly filled with twists, double-crosses, skullduggery and shocking revelations culminating with an incredible race-against-the-clock crisis. Showing Captain America break faith with the institutions he serves due to his disillusionment with systemic corruption is extraordinary and demonstrates his integrity. The plot is drawn from 'The Winter Soldier' arc of Ed Brubaker's legendary 134-issue run on "Captain America" during the 2000s. Paired with the moody, naturalistic illustrations of Steve Epting, the duo revitalized the character and his supporting cast for post-modern readers. The bold move of resurrecting Bucky Barnes and reframing his legacy was a stroke of brilliance that left an impactful mark on latter-day Marvel comics. The element of SHIELD being infiltrated by subversives is drawn from the 1988 limited series "Nick Fury vs. SHIELD" written by Bob Harras and illustrated by Paul Neary. The Triskelion as the headquarters for SHIELD was lifted directly from Marvel's secondary Ultimate Universe line although the film locates it in DC on the Potomac whereas the comics set it in New York Harbor. Similarly, the technological interpretation of Falcon is a nod to the Ultimate iteration of the character whereas the original Marvel iteration can telepathically communicate with birds and has a glider harness with mylar wings and titanium ribbing.
Co-directors Joe and Anthony Russo were untested filmmakers who landed the plum gig after Kevin Feige saw their two-episode stint on the TV sitcom "Community"! Nevertheless, the brothers knocked this film out of the park and were tapped again to continue guiding the good Captain's adventures down the line. The action sequences are phenomenally staged but grounded enough that you feel the weight of each impact and only realize you're watching a superhero film when Steve intermittently exceeds human limits. The opening hostage rescue, the Fury ambush, the sniper attack, the elevator brawl, the Quinjet takedown, the freeway chase, the underpass shoot-out and the climactic Triskelion assault are all top-tier set pieces that are thrilling to watch! Despite wall-to-wall action, there is enough downtime to prevent fatigue, to advance plot like Hydra's insidious long-game and to build character like Steve's bedside scene with a senile Peggy. I especially like the use of the real-life 'Operation: Paperclip' in which 1,500 Nazi scientists and engineers were granted immunity and recruited by the CIA's precursor, the OSS, to work for the US government. In the film, Hydra scientists like Arnim Zola use the opportunity of this brain-drain to embed themselves in SHIELD from its very inception.
The cast is remarkable. Steve Rogers comes into sharp focus here and Chris Evans truly made the Captain his own the third time around. Carrying over from "The First Avenger", Sebastian Stan returns as a grimly resurrected James Buchanan 'Bucky' Barnes, Toby Jones lends his voice to the disembodied digital form of Dr. Arnim Zola and Hayley Atwell briefly appears as an aged Peggy Carter. Anthony Mackie makes a strong, likable impression as Sam Wilson aka Falcon as does Emily Van Camp as undercover Agent 13. They join returning allies Scarlett Johansson as Natasha Romanov aka Black Widow, Cobie Smulders as Agent Maria Hill and Samuel L. Jackson as Col. Nick Fury who gets showcased in a hair-raising action sequence all his own! Having an actor of Robert Redford's stature play Alexander Pierce was not only a casting coup but paid tribute to his role in "Three Days of the Condor"! Rounding out the villain roster is Frank Grillo as a pre-Crossbones Brock Rumlow and UFC welterweight champion Georges St.-Pierre as French mercenary Georges Batroc the Leaper, two traditional Cap antagonists. Callan Mulvey plays the itchy trigger-fingered double-agent Jack Rollins. Maximiliano Hernandez as Agent Jasper Sitwell, who was introduced in "Thor" and was seen throughout the saga in films, One-Shots and "Agents of SHIELD" episodes, is revealed as a Hydra sleeper along with Garry Shandling as Senator Stern returning from "Iron Man 2". The head of Hydra himself, Baron Wolfgang von Strucker, played by Thomas Kretschmann, puts in a cameo for the end-credit scene as do the Maximoff twins Pietro and Wanda played by Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Elizabeth Olsen. World Security Council members leave their shadowed holo-conference screens to show up in person this time with European representative Hawley, played by Jenny Agutter, being the only returnee from "Avengers". North American Councilman Rockwell is played by Alan Dale, South Asian Councilman Singh is played by Bernard White and East Asian Councilman Yen is played by Chin Han. Steven Culp and Nestor Serrano have bit parts as irate Congressional Committee members who grill Natasha. Gary Sinise lends his voice to the Captain America Smithsonian exhibit as narrator.
TRIVIA:
1. Nick Fury relates that his grandfather was an elevator operator which is what Samuel L. Jackson's real-life grandfather did for a living.
2. When Alexander Pierce opens his refrigerator, a jar of Newman's Own sauce is clearly visible as an homage to the two times Redford and Paul Newman shared the screen.
3. Steve's catch-up list differed by country but had seven fixed items: Thai food, Star Wars, Star Trek, Nirvana, Rocky, Rocky II and Troubleman. The countries for which items were added to the list include the US, the UK, Australia, Italy, France, Spain, Russia, Brazil, South Korea, Mexico and the Spanish-speaking countries of South America collectively.
4. Nick Fury's tombstone bears the epitaph "The path of the righteous man. Ezekiel 25:17". This was Jules Winnfield's favorite verse in "Pulp Fiction", a character Jackson is famous for playing.
5. The Winter Soldier's moniker comes from the Thomas Paine quote that "the summer soldier and sunshine patriot will, in this crisis, shrink from the service of their country; but he that stands by it now, deserves the love and thanks of man and woman." 'He' is the winter soldier, the inverse of 'the summer soldier'.
EASTER EGGS:
1. When Steve and Natasha enter the old SHIELD headquarters at Camp Lehigh, they find portraits of SHIELD's three founders: Colonel Chester Phillips, Howard Stark and Peggy Carter.
2. Sitwell reveals Zola's algorithm is targeting potentially problematic persons of interest like Bruce Banner and Stephen Strange. This is the first reference to Doctor Strange in the saga.
3. Agent 13's real name is revealed as Sharon by Natasha. This hints at her familial tie to another MCU character for comic readers who know the implication of the name.
4. Although corrupt in the film, Jack Rollins is the actual name of a heroic SHIELD agent from the "Nick Fury vs. SHIELD" comics who alerts Fury to the enemy infiltration.
CAMEOS:
1. Co-director Joe Russo plays the underground doctor tending to Nick Fury during the scene where he reveals he's alive.
2. Captain America scribe Ed Brubaker plays the bearded Hydra scientist tending to the Winter Soldier during the scene where Pierce orders his mind wiped.
3. Stan Lee plays the Smithsonian security guard who discovers that Cap's World War II uniform has been stolen.

Hydra leader Baron Wolfgang von Strucker plots to sacrifice minor Hydra cells to the ensuing manhunt while consolidating remaining resources to advance their research on the Chitauri Scepter and the two surviving guinea pigs of their human experimentation, the Maximoff twins, who are seen exploring their nascent abilities to move faster than the eye can see and to manipulate objects telekinetically.
2. Bucky visits the Captain America exhibit at the Smithsonian to learn about his and Steve's past.
The next chronological stop in the MCU are Episodes 17 - 22 of Season 1 of "Agents of SHIELD" which complete the first season of the show.
Why not cut & paste the entire script? It would have been shorter.

Winter Soldier is one if my favorite Marvel movies!! The Captain America trilogy is so good!
