- St Patrick - Patron saint of Ireland. Who was he? What did he do, and where was he from?
Legend has it Patrick banished the snakes from Ireland but what what do we actually know bout him?
Follow my adventures as I travel through the landscapes and history of Scotland. I make quick, quirky and (hopefully) funny content about Scotland's past, people and scenery.
I look for the hidden stories, forgotten people and beautiful scenery of Scotland and try to find the funny in the darkness, obscurity and occasional absurdity of our history.

Everyone is Irish on St Patrick's day, unless you're Scottish, then you're definitely still Scottish!
I'm so happy your wife threw that grenade!!
Great video! Happy St. Patrick's Day 🍀☘️🍀
She keeps me on my toes 😂
Happy St. Paddy's Day. I was in Northern Ireland on St. Patrick's Day 1975 & I was surprised that it wasn't a big deal there. Great storytelling as usual.
Thank you!
Having had sheep and helped others with theirs....I'm dying. 🤣🤣🤣🤣 Far too true, but hysterically funny.
Mad sheep 😁😁😁 I agree about the snakes. Down the hatch. Cheers. Really nice to see you with The Hoof GP. 👍👍👍🌷🌷🍺🍺🍺🌷🌷
Happy St. Patrick’s Day ☘️
Great video... love the picture of the clover... 😊
Thank you!
Well done Bob. Enjoyed it. Really looking forward to finding out about our own patron Saint too!
Cheers Jimbo. Yeah, need to get that done this weekend!
awesome as per usual. dont you stop scotland unplugged again!!!or i will post you a snake!! oh damn I cant do that i live in NZ and we dont have any!! lolol love your channel love your stories
One of the many awesome things about NZ, though I’ve never been yet 😂
Loving all your videos. I am Scottish-Irish ancestry. Loving your sense of humor, it is just like my Da. Thanks for all the history and enjoyment. ✌️❤️
Thank you!
Lol, you made my day! I always wondered how the four leaf clover was brought into St. Patrick’s day. Hope you and your family had a great day and special thanks to your wife!
Thank you! Hope you had a good one.
Love your videos! You remind me of a high school history teacher who also had a wicked funny sense of humor. But your accent (from this American point of view) is wonderful to listen to. Please, tell us about St. Andrew!
Thank you! Off to St Andrews today.
Happy Saint Patrick's Day
Very interesting. Great job for last minute 😊
Awesome video. Love that you were side tracked. Lol
Thank you!
Happy St. Paddy's Day
Hilarious
Thank you!
Thanks for sharing! Your videos are so fun and informative. I love them.
Thank you!
I have to wear my orange with my green on St Patrick's. My Alexander family came from northern Ireland but Americans only know about the green. Unity is good! One of my favorite places in Scotland is Iona: So many MacDonalds buried there. Uisge Beatha! Sliante! 🇮🇪🇺🇲🏴
Happy St. Paddy's Day to you too! Hope you enjoyed it. Myself, I've nothing against it but my ancestors have been out of Scotland for many years.. lol besides, it just feels weird to celebrate the death of somebody. 😮
Haha. Yeah!
I love these videos! You definitely seem like a guy i could hang with. Next time you're in Alabama, come have a drink and chin wag and I can share our much less interesting local history with you 😊
Haha. Thank you! Alabama sounds awesome!
Love your humor. So if he was enslaved by Irish and then founded a Catholic church, he could have been Irish, Scottish and Viking.
I do still enjoy finding 4 leaf 🍀 though. Glad I wasn't pinched today.
Thank you. Never seen one!
As an ex-pat New Yorker, I can vouch for the fact that St Patrick's Day is celebrated with serious gusto in this town, even by this Norwegian!!
BLASPHEMY!!!!Screams my Irish genes; Suck it up!!!! Says my Scots genes. Scotch?! No way in Hell! says my French genes.
Thanks for another informative and fun tale.
Thank you!
The hoof go sent me 😜😜
I learned this when I was a wee lassie from my Scottish Grandfather.
Also, St. Patrick's colour was Blue.
With my Grandmother being English, I also learned they were at odds with the Irish,
and would wear orange on his day, not green.
That’s interesting. Sounds like the orange order.
Really loved this. I had no idea he was from Scotland.
As a side topic.. I’d love to here you thoughts on the differences between the Scots and the Irish, for comparison not judgment.
Hmmm. Interesting question. I’d say we’re not massively different. The Irish have beaten us in the accent stakes though. 🤔
Any excuse for a pub day
Absolutely. Can’t remember last time I was in a pub 😂
hmmm sheep. We are not farmers or ranchers (US, can you tell?) We did, like a couple of over grown city kids, attempt to learn to herd livestock using dogs. Sheep, ducks, and cattle in mostly paddock trials, not much in the way of field trials like in Scotland. Herding dogs have a sense of humor. Even the Border Collies, though most of the group had Australian Shepherds. Shall I tell the sheep surfing story? Why not. We were attempting to herd 5 sheep up and down a fenced pasture. This one guy was not communicating with his dog very well. Purely by accident, the dog managed to get the head ewe running under her owner. He was pushed up on the ewe's back and off they went down the pasture. The dog stopped, obviously astonished, then bounced along keeping the fun going until the guy fell off. Some other people took their turns. And it was this pair again. The dog lined up the sheep very deliberately, and pushed a sheep under the dog's owner. Off they went, the dog following and obviously laughing at the owner on the sheep. A new sport was born.
Haha. Sheep dogs are far too clever. We had one that used to try to get behind the TV when the sheep dog trials were on TV. Saying that, his cleverness actually saved my skin when he let my parents know there was a fire in the house.
@@scotlandunplugged Good dog!
im sure the claim that st patrick came from the fact that starthclyde had major welsh influence and supposedly still spoke welsh during roman occupation apparently lol, been down a rabbit hole myself and cant find anything concrete XD
Nope,Cymric Briton.
Good to hear that Scottish sheep are just has hopeless as Australian sheep.
First
I’ve heard that that “snakes” were the Druids. Take it with a grain or two of salt, it’s something I’ve heard in pagan circles.
That’s interesting. Never thought of it as a metaphor. 🙂
