I followed the advise of a fictional serial killer (Hannibal Lecter in Silence of the Lambs) to find my way towards Marcus Aurelius's Meditations. So, you know, not all hope is lost. Many streams lead to the same ocean.
Thanks so much for doing this. I don't often get a chance to sit down and read classic philosophy. Being able to listen to something like this while I'm on the go is an absolute godsend.

In Italy where i am from, this shift happened only about 100 years ago: my grand parents born at the end of the 19th century were all from numerous family and had many siblings, with a few deceased in childhood among them: my parents, born after WWI, had much fewer sibling (my mom only one sister and my dad 2 brothers) who all lived into old age, and that is the common experience confirmed by statistical data.

That's more than 300 years after jesus was born. Which is why why we see them talk about Zeus and the gods etc. I think I made my point
The first 30 centuries or so they were busy feeding the christians to the lions for entertainment of the romans and keeping slaves, conquering europe building roads everywhere in their empire. The chrisdtians was an obscure group, a cult of you will rising from the essenes. Because their faith was too strong the romans decided to adopt and hijack their one god religion hence the roman church that was going to dominate the world for centuries to come but it was a roman perversion of the original chistian faith. That's what we have all been believing in for ages

The central tenant remains “don’t worry about something you can’t control.” The opposing view to this would be Jan Paul satres exetenialist ideology that “I could have prevented World War II.” His logic being that had he killed hitler the war would have immediately stopped or perhaps never started. End of the day skepticism is the most applicable philosophy for real life regardless of the time frame.

Hard to imagine he and his wife had 14 children , most of which died before the age of four, 5 lived to adulthood.
Not really hard to imagine, since high infant mortality was endemic until very recent times.

How would you know that that person Hitler would do what he did? Stoicism say worry about what you can change. How can you change what you don’t know?
