This book is life changing. Lord thank you for this life you have given me. The birds that sing, the green grass and the warm you provide us from the sun. The air we breathe that you fill our lungs with. This is so heavy and deep. Wow
I’m going to listen to this like a movie, stoic principles aligned me with reality and made me understand the concept of time and how so much of a gift the present moment is ❤❤
Thank you for this excellent recording and narration. I hope you don’t mind that I put some markers for the specific chapters in the comments. I find it helpful and others may do so as well. But I also agree with your view of appreciating the whole text as well. Thank you again.
I would live to know what he would do with the Trump situation...I have to admit that whatever he recommended, even if it was against what I believe, that I would adhere to it...This guy is a genuine good human being and only wants what's best for people, I wish everyone listened to this great man.
Marcus would appreciate Trump and all his character defects that unlike the establishment elite have nothing to do with Americans but himself. Marcus would have been a great mentor/friend to Trump and I truly believe that.
Good question to ask. He wouldn't be impressed with Trump, but that aside, he would probably say, hear him out and respond to him with sound steadfast reason, maintaining virtue at all time. I suppose that's like saying, take the high road.
Marcus Aurelius ideas that come to mind: In the morning before I go out, I must remember that I will meet ignorant, rude, ungrateful people. And, when he tries to do harm, he cannot hurt me; he harms himself. Because he cannot inflict the ugliness of evil on me, I am unharmed. His thoughts and behaviors color his own soul. And though he attempts to harm others, he is my kin. We humans are meant for cooperation, like hands and feet, like the rows of the upper and lower teeth. I cannot hate him. If we cannot teach him, then we must tolerate him. He exists, so people like him are one of the expressions of the universe and so are natural. Everything that has been and presently is has happened before and will happen again. If we were to rise up higher than the mountains and look down upon the earth, we would see the farms, all of the squabbling nations, the armies as tiny as ants, We could appreciate that we are all part of one big human, political community. And whether we observe this for 40 yrs or for thousands of years, we can grasp the truth of our existence. Marcus Aurelius speaks of people who wish others would die, people who need serious advice on deodorant, and of throwing bread crumbs into lakes for the ducks. It all feels present day and relatable. My own interpretation of Trump? This too shall pass. As frightening as the Nixon era and Watergate Hearings were, it ended, and then it all happened again. Here we are with self-interested politicians and trials. Did we really expect that history wouldn’t repeat itself? Despite all of our national exceptionalism, nations tend to only endure in strength for 400 to 500 years. Memento mori. Whether speaking of our vessel of flesh or our society. Who in the Roman Empire would have ever thought their dominance and way of life would ever end. “There’s nothing quite as sure as change.” - The Mamas and the Papas. So we may as well embrace the prescription the universe has given us and Amor fati. Through focusing on only that which we can control - our perception of situations and our responses to them - and letting go those things we cannot control - everything else, we find true release, freedom, and contentment, even in the worst of times. Perhaps the hardest thing to accept is that we have no control over whether Putin or any other dementia-ridden or narcissistic power-monger will launch ICBM nuclear missiles. We have zero control over that. So we may as well not let them hold the world/other nations hostage over the threat. As a Stoic would say, so we’re dying, it’s time for lunch. We are not relieved of our duty to each other. We still strive for Wisdom, Courage, Temperance, and Justice. And a last thought on Trump. From a Stoic point of view, what evidence of himself does Trump reveal? He shows anger, vengefulness, and threatens to go after any person and their families if they oppose him. He flaunts the law, the courts, and the judicial system. He is before the Supreme Court to test whether he is above the law. He states that, in so many words, life is not fair. He has stated directly, You knew I was a snake when you elected me. I don’t hate him. As a fellow human being, he is my kin. He clearly is not a Stoic and does not hold Stoic values. And I certainly cannot educate him, so….
Marcus Aurelius wrote all this in the form of a diary, therefore addressing himself. Did he really believe in what he wrote? I am neither a philosopher nor an emperor, yet I also write a diary addressing myself, not everything I write I manage to do in practice. It was the same for him perhaps? Greetings from Italy
I think He meant that the boys should be simple and restrained. As that is the older (pre Christian) meaning of the term. To be patient with your younger helpers (he was older when he wrote this) and not to get upset with their appearance or dress

He wouldn't bother about it.
What translation is this? Gregory Hayes or somebody else?
