That right there is enough to tell the tale. He didn't say he wish he was the Sechs (King of Facade, yes that's his name the German for 6), it's kinda funny how NieR assumed the situation. Though gotta say he has a tough competition... well...

Tbh, the comment comes off more that Emil is trans rather than gay.....
@@AksenowtCc Not sure. A lot of naming in the game comes down to earlier drafts of the story which had very different plot points (and no Drakengard connection). Pretty sure Sechs was also meant to be the main char at one point.

@@jaredcastro579 emil's a skeleton.. how is he supposed to feel pleasure?!
I really love how subtle it is. Emil being gay isn't treated as a grandiose thing or waved as a flag. Its treated as part of him, and he doesnt angst about it or get a drawn out arc. He gets to be a person.
Meanwhile, tlou2 keeps on screaming to people's faces: OuR ProTaGOniST iS LeSBIaN AnD WE'll keEp BriNGinG tHaT uP So DEaL wITh iT
@@drakeking9628 No, the only screaming people that politicized TLOU2 were the idiotic mob that were brainwashed it was some sort of a "right vs left" thing based on lies when the leaks came.
Ellie's sexuality came up pretty much just once in the beginning with the guy throwing slurs at her, that's it.
This topic only came up a lot *outside* of the game because too many sheep attacked the "forced lesbianism" in it.
It's also in part because of the different society in Nier's world. They've already lived through one apocalypse and there was no rapture which would pretty much upend all major religions, society crumbled and rebuilt itself in a world with magic and monsters.
Being gay is treated as a taboo in large parts of our world and still faces systemic oppression in most countries today; most of the "flag waving" in reality is a mixture of counterculture and catharsis for the people who do so. But since the system itself was destroyed in Nier's universe (along with basically everything else), people didn't really have time to stop and say "Let's put 'No Gays' in the rites" cuz they had bigger fish to fry. Hell, most of the fundamentalists with that bias probably died first, claiming God would vaccinate them from WCS and acting like the pandemic was all a hoax.
Not to mention we're not actually sure how Emil was raised. He's been living alone with his butler for pretty much ever and was given magic thanks to modern science, so I doubt he had some Margaret White-esque influence in his life telling him he's a witch and a sinner.
So why would there be any instilled shame about it to angst over?
@@DrakeDraco2000 The people of the Aerie clearly beg to differ -- at least as far as Kaine is concerned. Persecution absolutely exists within the world of Nier, just not always in the ways you might expect. Taro doesn't draw attention to sexual orientation/etc. outside of the rare handful of moments where it matters, which I think is a testament to how adept he is at handling trauma and sensitive elements as a director. One of the recurring themes of Taro's work is the human capacity for cruelty and kindness in equal measure. He's inclusive and obviously tremendously empathetic, but he's also not interested in portraying his game worlds as alternate realities where human rights are equal across the board and people don't have to worry about the things they worry about in today's day and age.
I credit Taro with helping me become a more empathetic person myself, and I think much of that is due to him NOT holding the player's hand or telling us how we should feel in any given situation. I'll avoid spoilers here, but Ending E in Replicant, for example, completely recontextualized my entire experience while also leading me to reflect once again on all the actions I'd taken in-game.
Anyway, my point is that -- for me at least -- these games are masterful precisely because they evoke these bouts of self-reflection. These are games about what it means to be human, warts and all.
@@DrakeDraco2000 thats not true at all if we look what happend to kaine
Checked it up, it's canon; Yoko Taro said in every interview after 2011 that Emil is homosexual, and is attracted to Nier. And can you blame him, really? After the stuff with No.6 and accepting him regardless of appearance, it really shows.
First time I played through this scene I thought that's what it meant. Second time I was wondering if I was mixing it up for the wrong reasons, because he has his 'sister's' body now and Kaine is Intersex. I guess it was the first interpretation after all?
This is JK Rowling revelation level

Plus, I mean just fucking _look_ at bro Nier. I don't play for that team, but I'll admit that my first reaction when I saw him post-timeskip was 'Holy _SHIT!_ He went from 'Nice to finally meet you, sir! :D' to _'yeah, your daughter calls me daddy, too.'_
So who knew:
Kainè: definitely, from the moment she laid her eyes on him, so she became the protective sister so that no one will ever hurt her Emil.
Weiss: from spending time with Emil, he was able to tell.
Nier: will never notice even if it hits him in the face!
Nier has eyes only for his beloved futanari
@@hendix2200 Yikes bro
I dunno about that. Kainé became the protective sister because she knew what it was like being hindered by your body. She was always a hermaphrodite, then had become half shade. With Emil having self-esteem issues because of his eyes, Kainé caught on with that and the mutual relatability made her protective of him, a child.
@@bellinbluee I mean he isn't wrong
Honestly. He probably has noticed but as Emil looks like a kid and having been sexually exploited by an older man when he was 15 (Short Story: The Red and the Black from Grimoire NieR) he probably just feels uncomfortable with the idea.
For anyone who doesn't think Emil is gay, here's the interview from the Grimoire Nier book:
Interviewer: Kaine became a huge topic of discussion even before the release, but Emil’s feelings towards Nier got its own share of attention after the release.
Yoko: I thought I made it quite clear with that bride statement, but it didn’t seem to have gotten the message across.
Interviewer: One theory was that Emil developed feminine feelings and liked Nier as a result of fusing with his sister Halua
Yoko: No, Emil is gay!
Eishima: Oh, confirmation is good. I thought that I saw nonexistent undertones because of my dirty mind. (laughs)
Mr. T: I thought Emil liked Kaine since they slept outside together, and wanted to marry her.
Yoko: Emil saw Halua in Kaine. To Emil, she was a reliable sister figure.
If there wasnt any more reason to love Yoko Taro. I love how firm he is about it all.
Who cares...
@@noambruh ur mom lol
That quote where he says he saw his sister in kaine really solidified it. It was pretty clear in the game.

This is how you do LGBT representation in a game. Just let them be characters and make their sexuality just a part of who they are, instead of trying to make it their entire character. Feels more natural rather than feeling like the writers are just trying to check off a box, and as a result, more immersive.
Gay guy here. This is how it's done. There is more to me than my sexual orientation, y'know? If only most writers and hell, lots of people understood this concept.
I never get this argument tbh. I haven't seen any many media that make gay characters a big deal. Even stuff like SU keeps it tame, and that's the thing people point to when making this argument.
What exactly are you comparing it to, tho?
why would there be LGBT representation on a literal young boy is what i want to know.
@@kar12894 Because young boys can be gay? Like, that's a thing that happens.
Yeah, I kinda figured. I do like the subtlety behind it, I feel like it adds to the character. Sometimes certain things don’t need to be just thrown out in your face, subtleties like these really make a character feel real.
I love all 3 companions in this game, my fave parts are when you’re running around and they would start having random conversations. LOVE it when games do that.

Four companions. You forgot Weiss. He's hilarious.
Oh, I thought he said this because of him being ashamed of his current body or something like that but this makes a lot more sense.
yea it's a bit less ambiguous in replicant, as he says he wishes he was fyra and gets confused when nier says he'd have a bride. tho him being attracted to nier isn't really touched on, if anything, it more seems like he's attracted to the king.
@@No0wis i think him being attracted to nier was confirmed, but hes also the only guy emil hangs out with so ya know.

@@Excalibur5k Why you gotta play my man sebastian like that?
I took it as a trans commentary. Not homosexuality.
I'm not sure how people can think this means nothing.
Emil is emphatic about having a wedding, envies Fyra, and pauses at the word "bride". That's pretty explicitly "I'd much rather wed a handsome king."
Yes, Gestalt has different dialogue, but Gestalt was literally made just for the US market and changed a lot more of the canon than that. Besides, Yoko Taro confirmed Emil's gay for Nier specifically, which would be weird with the much larger age-gap between them in Gestalt, while human!Emil is appears to be about the same age as pre-skip Nier from Replicant.
Isn't Emil technically much older than Nier and Kaine? Hundreds of years, no? He just doesn't physically age or mature apparently.
Gestalt doesn't even retcon that Emil's gay. Just the fact that Nier already had a wedding changes the conversation so he never gets to say it
@@carrot708also, Emil is the only one in the entire game who doesn't shit on Papa's looks, he even says he looks "cool" too lmao.

The dialogue with the father is quite philosophical. Reminds me of Good Will Hunting movie. Robin Williams tells Matt Damon that he shouldn’t fear having faith in his first relationship. And Matt Damon retorts with a question why he doesn’t remarry himself.
NieR Gestalt kind of refers to a relationship with Kaine tho, so it's still not bad.

When you realize that nothing good ever happened to Emil, aside from having good friends to help him.
@@shybandit521 Dammit man don't make me cry now.
Anyone who has the privilege of marrying Emil would have to be awesome
For those who still doubt this, In Japanese he literally says “I wish I was your bride.” Or a line that follows that general sentiment (forgive me it’s hard to translate these things sometimes)
For anyone who is confused, yoko taro likes to have ALOT of LGBT characters and themes so yes Emil is gay. The translation in this line can mean he is hiding the fact he is gay OR that he is ashamed of his body and the fact he would out live his spouse.
Can’t wait for Drakengard to get that remake so we can get some Pedo pride with Leonardt coming out.
@@Garl_Vinland w h a t?
@@Garl_Vinland Yeah, I don’t see him being changed back to his Japanese incarnation even if Drakengard *does* get a remake. That said, I do think there is a conversation to be had about how public opinion of attraction to children arguably does more harm than good. That’s not to say that it shouldn’t be seen as a bad thing, but I’ve no doubt that the stigma surrounding it, as well as general misunderstandings of it, have made it difficult for someone that is attracted to children to get help. Research supports this conclusion, as well. Even so, I think we’re a long, LONG way away from seeing that particular Drakengard character come to the West unaltered, for obvious reasons.
@@nolex9804 Kind of an oxymoron then, for the new NieR translation to push Emil as a gay character, but still shy away from the other stuff. Makes it seem more like an agenda being pushed, then simply being faithful to the source material.
@@Garl_Vinland Not really. The whole reason Emil being gay was cut from the Western release in the first place was because it could’ve been too controversial at the time. Sure, Yoko Taro isn’t one to shy away from that stuff to an extent, but if something is so controversial that it could hurt the game’s sales or cause very real backlash, then it’s still within reason for it to be cut. You and I both know that Yoko didn’t make Emil gay to push an agenda that isn’t present in Japan, he did it for a whole list of reasons. He wants his games, stories, and characters to be unconventional, and for a game in 2010, a gay character is one way of doing that. Now, not so much. But even so, representation is always nice, so long as it’s done well, and I think it’s safe to say it was done quite well with Emil. It’s a part of who he is, and the game doesn’t necessarily go out of its way to avoid it, but it’s only mentioned the one and only time it makes sense to mention it. For gamers that aren’t gay, it makes no real difference. But for those that are, it probably makes the game connect with them on a more personal level.
How the heck did I not get this? It just never clicked for me that Emil was gay 😂 God I have a thick head

For everyone who only played Automata so far and isn’t familiar with Yoko Taro’s work: Play/Watch the first Drakengard game and read the Grimoire Nier! It’s based on the Replicant version. There’s tons of backstory for the characters and the world of Nier.
He wants to marry Papa Nier? I mean who doesn't lol
I think he's in love with brother Nier, and that's why they changed it in Gestahlt (giving them the benefit of the doubt).
WhO dOEsN'T ? A real MAN
Wth do you mean by a ReAl MaN? And who can decide who is "real man" and who is not?
only brother nier makes sense Yoko said it was a innocent love wouldn't makes sense he's attracted to a handsome pretty boy and not a old man that looks like burnt leather
I like to think that if brother nier and father nier were to exist at the same time (or heck go even further and confirm that father nier is the father to brother nier) then Emil would have respect and admiration for father nier and affection and attraction to brother nier.
Emil gay icon
Papa Nier seemed really cold when Emil just asked the question. It’s understandable since he’s been raising Yonah as a single father for what seems to be a majority of her child hood.

I have to say this is the best way to reveal a character is homosexual. It’s not pushed upon the player nor is it a disruption of the story. It’s merely an organic part of the world and the party. It also reveals why Emil is close to Kaine more as a sibling and not as another love interest (aside from the fact he is literally a child) he’s gay. They probably talk about their crushes lol.

I really like to see some of the reactions here... one main focus of the game is dealing with differences (Kaine being intersex and part shade, Emile with his body and his homosexuality...) Guess some of you played NieR and still managed to ignore part of its message. Interesting!
One of the main focuses of the game is absolutely not to do with Kainé being intersex or Emil being homosexual. In fact if you didn’t look at interviews with yoko taro or read Grimoire Nier you would literally have zero idea Kainé was intersex. Those are just two little details that add to their character, but are certainly not the focus of their characters.
@@askechadd2473 i said « one » of the main focus of the game is « dealing with differences ». Emil is my son
When first heard his hesitation of having a bride...I thought it was because of his body not his sexuality lol
In French, it's translated "To find someone" in Gestalt. I wonder what Emil says in the japanese version.
Is there a Japanese sub for gestalt?
@@someoneyoumightknow2795 Yeah. Gestalt was released in Japan as an xbox 360 exclusive
In the Japanese version of Gestalt specifically, there's no reference to it in specific. He asks a bunch of questions about Nier's wedding.
However, it is worth noting that Gestalt was created specifically for the west. It wouldn't exist without the localization team wanting to change things, ending up with Weiss telling him to stop asking foolish questions and go to sleep. Emil, when Nier and Weiss has left, says "They were import questions to me, though..."
The commentary in the Japanese video I found (which is not at all official) slates it up to the age difference.
In Japanese Replicant (2010), however, it goes like this:
Nier: "You'll find a good bride someday as well, Emil." / ニーア 「エミールにもいいお嫁さんが見つかるよ。」
Emil: "Bride? Ahh.. A bride. I see." エミール 「およめさん?・・・ああ、お嫁さんですか。」
*Nier leaves*
Emil: "That's not quite it, you know." エミール 「そうじゃないんだけどな・・・」
Funny thing is that most newcomers and Gestalt only fans think that this is Yoko Taro pandering to the LGBT+ "cartel", even though the 2010 Replicant is the same.
Taro loves to mess with sexuality in his writing, like some of Automata's Operators being gay, even though most androids on the HQ use female bodies and their body can be swapped around making the gay/straight debate kinda pointless, things get crazy if you go into Drakengard territory with furiae's being brocon and Caim being into dragons.
Taro's writing is not forced like some half assed attempts of some AAA studios, his writing is so subtle that it may go past you if you're not paying attention, but if you just stop to think it will be obvious, like most of the foreshadowing of Replicant.
But I also wonder... If in Gestalt Emil was talking about a girl, did he consider Daddy Nier to be a Best waifu of the series?
Wasn't he tho?
This scene always bothers me because i cannot understand what he means by "yeah that's not really it".
Until i saw this video and check the comments.

Ain't no way people are trying to dodge this and say it's not real. Not only is it confirmed in a 2011 interview but also this isn't even close to the strangest thing Yoko Taro has done, Kaine is intersex for crying out loud
I appreciate the subtlety since these things can feel forced or take over the story sometimes but that being said there seemed like no hint at all in gestalt. Replicant at least hints better. Similar with Kaine being intersex. I did not know that until I read a side story. I wasn't sure why the people thoughy she was abnormal before but her story didn't really make the reason clearly
I like how people react to this when you know Yoko Taro criticizes this kind of prejudice in his every games, and more particularly in Nier Replicant in which it's the main theme. If you have a problem with that, it's mean you are one of those that Yoko Taro criticizes.
After hearing the new version I wase doubting if Emil was gay or identified as a woman since Emil was "jealous" of Fyra
Because Fyra married a man.
wait there are streamers at the party?
based yoko taro
Nier replicant: gay Emil
Nier gestalt: Sassy NieR
weiss: **confused boomer noises**
Will,good he’s gone for good 👍🏻
Thank you RUclips home page for spoiling this a day before I got to this scene. Preciate it.
i really really wanna cuddle emil so bad
Bruh it's not like emil is gay, he's thinking that nobody will marry him because of his looking
@friend oh, didn't know that, thanks for clarifying
Does anyone happen to have/know where to find the actual interviews (preferably in Japanese) where Tarou talks about emil?
Waiiiiit , i have a question guys , okay so i know that emil is gay in nier replicant and loves nier but , please don’t tell me that he loves nier in nier gestalt , i mean , father nier , because, of the age differences , and the fact that father nier was married make things more worse , so please tell me that no he doesn’t love father nier 😅
This dialogue was altered in Gestalt mostly because of the reason you stated.
as seems to be the case usually with these comparison videos, Papa Nier's dialogue is slightly more poignant.
ok i understand but this is not really comparable its has completely different context
what do you mean? it's still technically the same scene
It's the same scene. It's literally just showing how the dialogue was different between both versions
@@trezb as I see it with both versions Emil has affections for son nier bit admiration and respect for father nier. Emil only wants papa nier to be happy after hearing that he has no intentions of remarrying.
Him gay.... uh does liking Kaine count as a target?
Is the dialogue for the original 2010 nier replicant the same as replicant 2021? Obviously it's the first time being translated but it seems much more obvious in the replicant dialogue than gestalt
It is the same as Replicant only came out in Japan there was no censorship of dialogue
God forbid a character be gay in the early 2010s
That's not the point. It's the fact that it was revealed with such subtlety and not forced and in your face. It's a part of the character, but it doesn't define the character. It's called good writing.
@@metaltom2003 There is such thing as being too subtle, and if most of the players didn't get the hint from either version I struggle to see it as "good writing", but it's still nice it was included.
@@genyakozlov1316 Dude, even Nier bro is dense to realize Emil's subtlety and that's the point of being subtle, either players get it or don't.
But he wants to find a girl...?
he said he wishes he was getting married to the king instead?
aCkShUaLlY
Actually the interview he avoided saying he was gay, but said "His behavior is transgender" which if you know anything about Japan, isn't that good of a stereotype as it's more or less looked as a performance act (see hardgay/razor ramon)
Better than caim and red 🐉 relationship LOL
Anyone know the name of this ost?
Yonah or Ashes of Dreams.
So what about Papa Nier? Emil wants him too?
mira, desde mi punto de vista latinoamericano
no es raro ver a jovenes con viejos
asi que, si
I don't get the comments saying of course they changed it in Gestalt purely because Papa Nier's old. Having a crush doesn't exactly mean they're actually going to get together. It's like shaming a kid for having a crush on Chris Evans or something.
early 2010's america babey! good gay rep would not have gone over that well
@@synthgirlfriend897 Good point. Probably would have been twisted into some pedophilia narrative by the nay sayers lol
Sorry, I liked the old one better.
The old one is censored.
It creeps me out that he wanted to marry papa nier. His crush may still be there in the remake but he probably only had it when nier was younger
I always liked the idea that Emil may have affections for son nier but admiration and respect for papa nier. Emil only wants papa nier to be happy after overhearing that papa nier has no intentions of remarrying.
@@lunerblade13 Oooh. So he's just trying to convince papa nier to have a wedding with anyone.
What's so creepy about it? Kids have crushes on adult figures in their lifes all the time. There's nothing weird about it from where I'm standing, especially given Emil's background and relationship to Nier. Emil's thing for Nier never even comes up during their interactions, let alone would develope into anything beyond one-sided crush.
I get people's increased need to be vigilant about this sort of stuff, but whenever I see comments like this sprung about, I can't help but wonder if it's gotten to a point, where someone has just lost perspective on what is what.
@@jondoe7036 I never had crushes on adults
@@lilflax0396 I did, multiple times. And I know lot of other people who did so as well, from my inner social circles alone.
An adult crushing on a child would be creepy; a child crushing on an adult is generally just part of the process of growing up.
Why is there no audio? They actually speak in Nier 2010
