Actually, at a local science center, they have a bed of nails that you can try to lay on. And it surprisingly doesn't hurt.
It think it has to do with your weight distribution and the spacing of the nails, but those nails on Justin's bed looked way too sharp and too far spaced out.

For the painful blankets I suggest Rocksol insulation. It’s soft to the touch but has particles that’ll make your skin itch.
Also for the comfy room it has some sort of humidifier. For the painful room, I would suggest getting a humidifier and filling it up with liquids that give off an unpleasant smell like paint thinner, Goo Gone, or even pee.
It's supposed to be painful, not kill braincells and scar lungs.
