This album sounds a bit like some bright guys in their 20s or so, who want to be like their heros of prog rock. What they really needed here was a producer to channel their talent into something more coherent, and polish their sound a bit. They found a measure of success opening for acts like King Crimson and Supertramp. I am listening to their 'Seven Secrets' album. It is actually very good - well produced, melodic, and willing to explore musical ideas to completion.

Long, long ago, if one was a Lady, one rode side saddle (so as not to publicly wrap one's sweaty thighs around a horse, I suppose). When rich mill owners got horses for their daughters, they let them ride whichever way made sense, and in the colonies, the cowgirls rode as they pleased, too. For a while young Ladies (with a capital "L") continued to ride side saddle, because to do otherwise was Common. They even rode to the hunt, side saddle. Then times changed, and today everyone rides in a normal saddle.
The picture on the cover is probably Lady Godiva. She was a Lady, and rode naked on her horse to the local town to protest against some injustice, like her husband having to pay taxes or something like that. I think she's been remade into some kind of symbol for something these days, so the naked ride (side saddle, of course, since she was a Lady.)
    Enjoying this album BTW.
The guitar reminds me a lot of Mick Box of Uriah Heep at times. In fact maybe just because I thought the thought, now I'm hearing a lot of Uriah Heep in the sound.

Probably my favorite Fruupp album, especially Elizabeth. Say them back in the day and they were great live too, shame they didn't make it bigger. Stephen Houston (keyboards and oboe) moved to America and became a tele-evangelist.

Saw these guys a couple of times in the mid 70s- for me Prince of Heaven's Eyes and Modern Masquerades were them at their peak! So glad you're covering them JP- they really have slipped off most peoples' radars. They were a talented bunch and great fun 'live' BTW you can also buy Fruupp Anthology which contains all 4 albums,

Well, that was . . . _interesting_ . I really liked bits and pieces (nice guitar work). Not sure how I feel about the entire album, though. I might need to listen again. On "Graveyard Epistle" I briefly flashed on Zager and Evans _In the Year 2525_ ( not thematically, but the vocal tone ). Now, I like my Irish prog to embrace a bit of the traditional, like *Horslips* : _Furniture_ from the *Horslips Live* album or all of _The Book of Invasions_ . _In re_ your half-time comment - as others have pointed out, that appears to be Lady Godiva ( hair too short? ) a real person from about 1000 years ago who may ( or may not ) have ridden on horseback ( side saddle or not ) covered only in her long hair, as a tax protest.

Great to be in the UK during the mid-70s - lots of interesting sounds in the Prorgressive realm. Fruup is a bit too non-sequitor for me, but okay in that something better comes along.
Back then, I bought an obscure album by the English group Seventh Wave, their second record entitled Psi-Fi (1975).
Highly approve of it, very trippy, you'll never hear a similar sound anywhere else. Lots of fantasy and frolic, sort of like R&B in outer space as in Todd Rundgren's style.

I've known all of Fruupp's albums since the early 70s. I always felt they were what Genesis might have been if they were given less studio time and had less skilled studio engineers. I like a lot of Fruupp's work, but it just isn't as polished as the stuff by the A-listers of the time. This album is pretty good, the second half of the follow up (Seven Secrets) too. I'm less keen on the last album (Modern Masquerades), but the 3rd outing, The Prince of Heaven's Eyes, is not far behind Selling England by the Pound as a piece of prime prog.

Hi JP. DP from UK. I vaguely remember this band from rock radio back in the 70s. I really like the quieter baroque-like passages, and the blending of styles, but I can do without the guitar 'heroics', especially in Decision. Favourite track may be Song for a Thought, which sounds to me a little like Wishbone Ash at times.
P.S. Side Saddle! My answer to your half-time question, and also the title of a honky tonk instrumental by pianist Russ Conway, which was a UK number one in 1959.

    JP ,
It’s always so great how you launch into and appreciate underrated prog bands .
As a Fruupp fan , the album that grabs me most is ‘ Modern masquerades ‘ . Houston had moved on and was replaced by the late John Mason who brought generally some jazz influences with him . Add to that that the legendary Ian McDonald ( yes , he of King Crimson and later Foreigner ) produced MM and added some arrangements and saxes . It was their last studio album and many would say , their best . Excellent production and equally excellent tunes .
eg Sheba’s Song , Gormenghast , Misty Morning Way etc .
    Highly recommended 👍

I posted a comment on another reaction suggesting that you check out Fruupp, only to find you'd already done it (I did search, but you spelled their name wrong and so I didn't find it)! Kudos to you for doing a deep dive on another obscure 70s UK prog band. Although probably unaware of it, you chose their most aurally challenging album that is very jerky and even discordant at times, qualities which have enthused some but have been hard work for others. To those who found this to be too difficult a listen, Fruupp did become more easily listenable at their journey progressed, whilst retaining the quirky elements that unarguably gave them an original sound. Anyone who's given up on them on this listen should try, for example, Crystal Brook (ruclips.net/video/_IPfwXk5iMs/видео.html) and Misty Morning Way (ruclips.net/video/S6H1aZ-vV6I/видео.html) before making a final decision!
One other thing to bear in mind is that Fruupp didn't have anything remotely like the production budget of some of their more illustrious contemporaries and it shows at times, but it's not something to hold against them. JP - I hope you'll revisit Fruupp in the future, because there are plenty of gems for you to enjoy!

@@JustJPYou're very welcome! If you would like to explore Fruupp further, their third album (The Prince of Heaven's Eyes) is a concept album. Therefore another suggestion would be to listen to the opening track "It's All Up Now" (ruclips.net/video/T_JiBKuOJw4/видео.html) and, if you liked that, press ahead with the other tracks over time. 🙂

Not heard this before, but not a fan. Basically I only liked the first track. T2 not bad, started ok, but that ending. Also, as numerous have said very Yessy, with maybe a smidge of Sahb, amongst a dozen others. Hated T3 & 4. Predominantly, most of there melodies were ropey, and when given that harsh attack they added, the starkness grated. Re the more ballady/slower parts, well they just a bit drab, could've been anyone. Nope, far from impressed.

I hear early Genesis, Renaissance, Yes, and King Crimson, with a little Fish-era Marillion! Too bad they never made it across 'the pond', and punk/new wave doomed their future. Very nice Sunday wake-up! This was their first album, please play more this was fantastic!🥰✌&❤.( The best way to sit on a horse? Any way it lets you do not be saddled down with the logistics! haha).

Ciao.
