I like analog style eqs for pushing and digital eq's (with auto gain function) for cutting. These things make sense to me and feel natural. Everyone is different tho
I totally agree with all your points . I don't know who started the scam debate, but where would we be without LA2A, 1176, Pultec EQ, or Channel strip emulation plugins.
The most important thing when it comes to plugins, is to use something that gets you the results you want quickly. If you can do that with a plugin that can do everything, good for you. If you can do it with a specialized plugin that is an emulation of a piece of analog hardware, good for you. The argument that you shouldn't be using something for whatever esoteric reason is silly. Use what you feel comfortable with and gets you to the results you are looking for quickly.
I just started really using channel strips -- on everything, for tracking. I wasn't aware of just how much mixing can be done with just the low-cut and high-cut. (Not to mention the Dynamics section.) The limitation also puts me in the mindset of: concentrate on ONE freq range to boost (if needed) and ONE freq range to attenuate (if necessary). My parametric EQing DOES tend to look like "Roller Coaster Tycoon", lol.
