  • A massive thanks to my Uncle for loaning me his bike to make this review!
    So today I got to ride a brand new BMW S1000XR in Ice Grey. This is the fully revamped model with all new looks, ergonomics and more. I have previously ridden the 2019 model, which I said at the time was the best all round bike I'd ever ridden and that remained the case through everything else I rode. So, the big question, is this one an improvement? Have a watch and find out what I thought :) Let me know what you think down in the comments!

    Nice review! I love the Ice Grey. I could look at it for days and days and miles and miles. I'd love to try one, but it just isn't my style. It's quite nice of your uncle to let you run it around, tell him thanks from us!

      I think it'd surprise you, it's a scary capable bike that's as comfy going mad speeds as it is pootling along :)

    As someone who’s also 6’7”, I really appreciated this video. I sat on the bike at the dealership and was really amazed how well it fit me and how tall it felt. Normally I’m very flat footed on my bikes when at lights etc, this one I can also flat foot, but like you said, I don’t have tons of extra room. Beautiful bike. Think I’ll get one here soon.

      Hello fellow sufferer of tallness :D Yeah it really is a lovely bike for taller people too as it just fits so well, I know it's not absolutely gargantuan or anything but it's a lovely seating position :) Ah very good, if you do get one best of luck with it :)

    Greetings from Gold Coast Australia. Thank you for an entertaining and informative review. Just FYI I own the same bike in the ice grey and purchased a low seat/low suspension version because I am a shorty (174 cm). I think the seat is down to about 810cm and I can get my feet flat on the ground. So shorter riders should not be intimidated by this XR.
    Only small problem is that with low suspension, the catalytic converter (European compliant) is so low to the ground, I have to be very careful not to scrape it when negotiating speed bumps. My Lola is an awesome bike - Dr Jekyll (below 5000 rpms) & Mr Hyde (above 5000 rpms). As flickable as a GS in twisties but a beast in the higher range. GS wins with respect to low end torque though., IMO. Definitely the best bike I have owned so far.
    Glad I found your channel. Thank you!

      Well.....you could always scrape it so much it "falls" off :D They're an insane bike higher up, agreed. So so fast! Glad you're liking it and have many more happy shpins :)

    Loved the review, good to see one from a more realistic sized and shaped person. I owned the 2015, which felt raw and more vicious. Traded in for a 2018 motorsport Xr again an improvement. I never liked the new shape one or the ice grey and now having seen it in the flesh there’s a big improvement over the gen one and the ice grey with carbon fibre panels is wow. You have to actually view the bike in the flesh to see what you think of it

    • @TheGorillaBiker
      @TheGorillaBiker  2 года назад

      Thanks! Haha I dunno about realistic I'm annoyingly large tbh 😂
      Yeah even the 2019 was less refined than the mark 2 even, I know some people prefer the more kind of raw bike, but the gen 2 is seriously nice and still has all the power.
      Absolutely. It was annoying me even that I couldn't get across how nice the colour looks in the flesh on video or in photos! Definitely a bike to see up close :)

    There is a factory lowering kit and a thinner seat which for me 5' 11" and 170 lbs makes it quite manageable. Only time I feel the weight of the bike is when I tuck in front of the garage for the night. Quick shifter is smoother for 2020 and less vibration in handle bars from slightly taller gears. It is truly addictive and you always want to go fast.

    • @TheGorillaBiker
      @TheGorillaBiker  3 года назад

      Ahhhh of course I never thought of that. Yeah it's a heavy enough bike and tall so I think no matter your reach and size you'd always have to be careful. A slip or whatever and that thing is definitely going over! The quickshifter is butter. So so nice. I honestly never noticed vibrations in the bars in the old model or this one anyway, I do ride older bikes generally though so I may be desensitised. Haha it does indeed.....a bad influence of a bike :D

    Great review again lad! I think I’d spend the money (if I had it) on a few older bikes rather than the crazy price Bmw are asking. I’ve a few friends who have different models of BMW and they all love them for their tech and comfort, but bemoan the initial cost and upkeep, especially if you go through main dealer. I’d rather have a few older, self-maintained, and (for me) less lethal bikes. This would kill me, for sure! I wouldn’t contain myself. No self-control!

    • @TheGorillaBiker
      @TheGorillaBiker  3 года назад

      Thanks :) Yeah I'd be the same, or already have done the same really I suppose altho I haven't spent close to that much even 😂 Initial cost is one thing, it's the cost of servicing would drive me mad, especially as I don't know how friendly they are to diyers :) Still a savage bike tho.
      You'd be surprised, honestly all the safety systems are insanely good at keeping you safe!
      But yeah it definitely encourages to push on a bit too 😂

    Great review! Thanks!
    I also tried 2019 and 2020 models, and 2020 is a noticable upgrade. Some can say that 2020 is not so insane like 2019, but for me if is fine. 2020 has less vibrations, everything a bit smoother, there is now much difference between Road and Dynamic modes in terms of suspension. Also it is possible to keep Dynamic mode on engine, but has Road mode on suspension. Breakes are good, bike feels settled, it turns easier and feels lighter. 5-6 gears now a bit longer, and RPM's not so high on cruising speeds. I thought about buying 2019 model, but 2020 is way better IMO. The only problem is the price...

    • @TheGorillaBiker
      @TheGorillaBiker  3 года назад

      Thanks :)
      I agree, like I said it's just an improvement across the board for me, a little bit everywhere. I think it's just as insane too, just in a more controlled way! Haha yeah I'll never be able to own one unless I win a lot of money!

    Excellent and refreshing style!
    I would get the ice Grey and the rest can be achieved with vinyl wrap.
    But is it reliable like a Ninja H2 SX? Though I know they might be considered a different class...but to me they can both serve the same all-round daily use as well as occasional long distance travel...

    • @TheGorillaBiker
      @TheGorillaBiker  3 года назад

      Thanks :)
      That's very true! The Ice Grey looks like it'll wear well too, but only time will tell.
      I honestly couldn't answer that, Kawasaki would definitely be easier to service but in the 2 of these my uncle has owned he's never had any issues, nor are there any common problems reported on the forums for them(I checked thoroughly after the video due to some questions I wanted to be able to answer) So really other than oil and chain tensioning it should be fine, You can still do all the servicing yourself if you want to, it just might be slightly more awkward than the H2 SX(and definitely sound worse)

    I did buy one. Traded in my Gen 1(2017), which I loved for the 2020 (ice grey of course) and zero regrets. My one nitpick is the stock screen isn't great. Oh, and BMW doesn't have colour matched luggage which is a crying shame.

So, I also rode a 2019 gen1 with the bar end weights from stock and never noticed any undue vibrations so I might not be the best to say, but I also rode this bike for an entire week on my commute, in total probably about 1000km total on this bike and never ever noticed a vibration. Very agile!

    It’s a bike that is definitely on my radar, although I think at a list price of £14k new in the UK, I’m more inclined to get a second hand previous model for circa £8k in spanking condition, and save £6k, and as much as I like my CBF1000, even the old version of the XR will be a huge step up, hopefully at 6ft I can reach the floor!

    • @TheGorillaBiker
      @TheGorillaBiker  3 года назад

      To be honest I'd be the same, if I wanted one I'd definitely go for a used model and I still reaaaaallly liked the original. 6k would buy a lot of fancy bits too for the older ones :) I still love my CBF, but it's a step down in sportiness and nowhere near as quick. I would be interested to try get Toaster on the back of this bike though and see is it anywhere near as comfy for a passenger. I think you'd be ok, but it'd definitely be harder to manage on bad ground for you, definitely try one :)

    Your summery says it all. Great bike but the price of BMW bikes is outrageous. Where I live motorcycling is a hobby as year round riding is out of the question. I have 3 bikes . A 2010 FJR1300, 2012 V-Strom 650 and a 2010 GSX 1250FA. All 3 bikes while purchased used have ABS and cost combined less than half the price of that Beemer. YMMV. Great review as always.

    • @TheGorillaBiker
      @TheGorillaBiker  3 года назад

      Yes indeed, I use my CBF as a daily so I spent more on it to get the few creature comforts like ABS and EFI but I'm the same as you, all of my bikes cost about half this bike total, so really up to the individual and how much free cash they have. If I was in my uncles position and didn't have to worry about buy one 1 new bike, I'd happily do it too :) But it'd be the Busa :P

    Merci pour la vidéo très complète. Un avis mesuré et personnel, j'ai adoré ta vidéo ! Je suis francophone et j'ai dû ralentir la vitesse de lecture pour pouvoir lire les sous-titres ;) J'ai essayé la 2021 il y a un mois et oui lourde à l'arrêt mais tellement facile à rouler. J'ai aimé la souplesse moteur (limite creux en dessous de 4000 t/min) et si expressive après 6000t/min. Je pense comme toi: elle permet d'aller au travail, de faire des roadtrips et de la piste. Pourtant j'hésite, le confort est-il très différent d'une GS1250 (dont le look ne me plaît pas) ?
    Je viens d'une Superduke 1290 2016 trop raide et radicale, en ce moment j'ai une ninja 1000sx bridée et je cherche une moto à position confortable, maniable et qui ne demande pas de rétrograder toutes les 2 minutes

      C'est une moto incroyablement facile à conduire, oui elle manque de grognement en dessous de 4000 tr/min mais c'est un moteur de moto de sport à la base je suppose ! :)
      Vous le pardonneriez car c'est tellement bon une fois que vous avez monté le régime plus haut, comme vous l'avez dit, c'est honnêtement probablement l'une des motos polyvalentes les plus performantes disponibles.
      Je ne pense pas sur le confort, oui la selle est un peu étrange mais c'est aussi très confortable, juste différent d'une GS, je ne suis pas non plus un grand fan de la GS, même si je reconnais que c'est une moto fantastique.
      Je me demande si la V2 Multistrada vous serait d'une quelconque utilité ? Personnellement, je pense que le S1000XR est presque parfait pour vous, essayez peut-être un Yamaha Tracer 900 ?

    • @jyc29
      @jyc29 2 года назад

      @@TheGorillaBiker Yes I thought of the Multistrada and the tracer 9 gt. What you probably don't know is that here in Belgium we pay a tax according to the power of the vehicle. For example the tracer I know it is 1500 euros, the multistrada it must be 2500 euros. Of course in addition to the price of the motorcycle. There is only BMW which offers a purchase of the reduced power XR (to pay less with the registration (125 euros)) but which puts back the motorcycle full power as soon as the first oil change is made ! :D
      So between a Ducati which will cost me 2500 euros more, a Yamaha which will cost me 1500 euros more with a not exceptional dashboard and an expensive BMW but very equipped and very efficient my choice is limited.

    Cruise control is really handy, I love it on my bike :-) I think BMW have done a lot of work to make so much tech be navigable while riding and without needing a manual to do basic things. My V85 has a 830mm seat height and even with the lower seat fitted, it is still quite a stretch for me to get a foot down, I have gotten used to it, but I'd not be confident on anything much taller that is so heavy.
    You know a bike is good if it makes you giggle when you open it up, it is way way more powerful than the V85 :D

Years ago I was testing my stroked XLCH on I95 in Miami and I got off on a sweeping exit going way over 100 and a dog ran across the road right in front of me. At that speed you cannot steer or you’ll go high side. You can only lean. And you can’t change course more than a couple of degrees of at all. I did not hit it.
