    The concept of ground driving is a critical step that most trainers in America no longer use, which is a lazy shortcut. This trainer is absolutely right, long lining & ground driving is a step that shouldn't be skipped. With a Mustang it should be practiced routinely during the first 90 days of training & while the horse is first being ridden to encourage it to be less hyper sensitive to everything. It also helps the horse soften to the rider's hands sooner.

    Get rid of the bit. Go bitless.

    • @Polopony20.
      @Polopony20. 5 лет назад +1

      Deborah Ferris can’t, there are some maneuvers at the show that require the small touch of the bit, also when they sell them they don’t know if the person there going to rides bitless.
      Also!
      It’s an opinion to go bitless or not, you can’t just tell someone to follow your opinion.

    I really enjoy watching Deb and Pat Puckett. Pat is the 40 yrs of horse training. Deb is the film maker. I think you'd really enjoy Pat and his transitions of bosal and hackamore to snaffle to a western bit.

    Great progress, but why use a bit at all!? I bet he would do amazing even without a bit...I reckon its all preference. I have a young mustang and absolutely agree with the slow is smooth and smooth is fast with these clever animals. I intend to have her bitless! Wish me luck, as I loved watching your progress and will attempt some of the same techniques and see how they workout for me. Lol

    • @SteveDyer

      The reason I used a bit is because the competition required some moves with the front end that I can't get without it.

    He should be desensitized more fully with a lunging stick, teaching him that it's not going to hurt him by gently letting the string of it gently flopping across his back, around his legs, face, and then when he relaxes by licking his lips, or cocking a hind leg, rub him on his forehead with it as a reward. You should be able to swing the string around all his legs after working through his reactions. If he tries to run, then keep doing it until he realizes that it's not going to hurt him and you can do it without reacting, then rub on him. Desensitization should also be done with a plastic bag tied onto the lunge stick, and rubbed all over his body starting with his head. If he runs, then keep him moving until he realizes, once again, that it's not going to hurt him, and he relaxes by licking his lips or cocking his hind leg. This is teaching him to use the thinking side of his brain rather than the reactionary side of his brain. One of the most important things to work with your horse on and you'll have a thinking horse that is much easier to work with. I've done it with many horses and had excellent results.

    Just an observation not my first rodeo. I'd lose the long lines and the bit and work more with the knotted halter. And getting him softer on the ground and yielding. From watching the video he is still very fearful and unsure of what's going on. I used to long line all of my horses but I find desensitizing with even the lunge line around the legs a and getting him bending. Its just a suggestion but I can see her still real fearful and not terribly confident.

      It is certainly possible to train a horse without a bit. Sometimes the bit helps the horse understand the cues better. The old Californio Vaquero style trains horses for several years in a hackamore until they finally use a bit.

      The point of the mustang makeover is to take a mustang that had been stuck in holding and train it. After the 100 days the horses and trainers compete and the horses get auctioned off. The trainers are responsible to train the horse to be a good fit for a wide variety of people. It is completely unknown who the future owner will be, not everyone rides bit-less. Who knows what the future owner will use him for.

    • @timandshannon03
      @timandshannon03 5 лет назад +1

      Plus he will need to demonstrate certain moves that will require a bit. The future owner can decide to go without a bit, I personally am not a fan of the bit, but it does have purposes.........
