Hi Robin. Interesting video clip as always 👌👌. OK so I just bought 2 new Olympus Pro Lenses. I blame you and Rob Trek and Peter F entirely for this decision ha ha !! I bought 40 - 150mm with free X1.4 teleconverter and 300mm with free X2.0 teleconverter. Since I had 3 overseas wildlife trips cancelled I had the money !!! Here is my comment - The 40 - 150mm was supplied with the X1.4 and the 300mm with the X2.0. In reality the best combination I am using and trying right now is the other way round. The X2.0 works great with the 40 - 150mm since the lens has an aperture of f-2.8 and I get 600mm and f-5.6 and the 300mm works great with the X1.4 which is enough at 840mm and easier to hold and focus. One of the many reasons I bought these two lenses was the option that I gained both teleconverters. Getting great results with this combination already 😊😊
One bit of kit I have been itching to try. I remember ditching my Canon 2x as it left only centre point focusing - good to see not the case for Oly. Turning the 40-150 into a 600mm f5.6 equivalent it will do the job on the rare occasions I want the extra reach.
Thanks for the quick review. Off to view the blog now. Will have to wait to see what the Australian price is, I may pick one up for convenience for the 40-150
Great video Robin, your passion for photography shines throughout. Regarding the tech specs, you are spot on too! The benefits of MFT are clearly presented too. Awesome shots too!!!
I have the Olympus 40 - 150 with the new 2x teleconverter I get a 600 mm field-of-view at 5.6 ... I also have the Panna Leica 100 to 400. That lens at the 600 m m equivalent focal length is also 5.6.... waiting to see a comparison between both lenses before I drop $425 into something did I might already own.
Hey Robin! Thank you very much for the video I am getting one, thanks to your great review! Really cool video. Please upload more videos soon. The best from Danmark!
Thanks. I use the 300mm Olympus with MC14 extender and have very good results with this and my Olympus EM1MarkII. IF the MC 20 is as good as the MC 14 I will by it.
@@robinwong Hi Robin. Wasn't even considering the 1.4 teleconverter; but after reading your comments, I think I'll get that instead. Loss of length but improvement in clarity and sharpness make it worth it, I thin.
@@wayneemery5709 I think it helps more with the 300mm, not so much for the 40-150mm lens. The grip adds weight and better hand-holding for larger and heavier lenses.
Any chance you could perform a quick comparison of an image with and without the converter on the 300mm PRO (with the shot from the lens alone cropped to the same angle of view)? It might also be informative if the cropped version were taken at both f4 and f8 (and this might help give an idea of how the increased ISO also plays into sharpness). Given that the ISO frequently will need to be increased, it seems the converter would only really beat cropping in very bright conditions where ISO is kept low. Very helpful video, thank you
Your photos show the difference between someone who knows how to actually use the MFT system and someone else who shall not be named but is in the recommended videos over to the right who just hates the fact the MFT exists and is determined to find problems with it.
Very informational and helpful review! Thank you. I was not aware it is only compatible with those 2 pro lenses. Is the 1.4 converter similar with compatibility? I am on the brink to getting my OMD system and would have the 12-200mm.
I have tried the new teleconverter with my pro lenses and can not fault it’s optics but rather it is me having trouble handholding my lens and getting a shutter speed fast enough to freeze the subject. If the bird is still there will be sharp pictures!
I started out with a Pant 100-300, then got myself a 300mm Pro n MC x1.4, n then Oly announced 150-400. I would have waited for that. I am just a for fun wildlife foto graph guy, need reach. Pant 100-400 tempting me, told upto 300mm, it is pretty sharp but beyond 300mm, it's not so sharp. I wonder if any tc fits Pant 100-300 (just wondering, doubt quality wil be good). I had a lens that u screw in front of lens to increase reach by x2. Boy, it works but in bright light, lots of color aberration n fringing. Just tinkering with toys in my backyard but will be worth it in cost if these tricks worked. And, goes without saying, Mr Robin Wong, your reviews are excellent. Simple. Worth watching and applying. Good job. Keep it up.
Dear Robin, Many Thanks, please make one clip for the MC14, with all its compatible lenses, in which you loose one F Stop lower only. I believe MC14 will be more efficient and practical in Sports and Wildlife Photography. Please Keep up with the very good work with Olympus OM System and Pro Lenses.

Great review (as always) Robin. You have piqued my curiosity -- have you ever done a review of the Olympus 40-150mm f2.8 and talked about how you use it for your photography?
It looks great. The stops lost are a non issue. I don’t see you will be shooting indoors with the 400 and it’s effectively and 800mm. Add the 2x and it’s much longer. Great for wildlife.
Hmmmm......I thought that it would be great to get one of these converters to get the longer reach with my 12-150 lens but at a cost of .....gulp, I won't even think about the cost.........I decided that with the 12-150mm and the 16Mp count of the camera a bit of cropping in the PC files will do the exact same effect and I don't have to swell my gadget bag, or get another bigger one, to get another bit of kit in........whichever way you go, you still have to use a tripod (or monopod) to get the picture steady enough to get a good picture anyway.....side by side comparison, no matter how steady your hand is, with and without a tripod will tell you immediately on the PC that you should have used a tripod. When I'm out and about, all of my shots with the 12-150 are taken hand held but by bracing on a three trunk or garden wall etc......sometimes there's no going back to re-get that special shot with the "soft" image. The bird shots and the close ups are really fantastic and it shows what someone with the knowledge and expertise can achieve.........the Olympus camera helped too. Going on EBAY for a converter turned up millions of OM lens converters for as little as A$20 but as you need 2 m4/3 adaptors.....back and front...... for any m4/3 lens to attach to one, it won't work.
Thanks, Robin! Does the complexity of the MC-20 equate to a higher grade of output than the MC-14? i.e. would the 2x magnification approach that of the x1.4 magnification, or are the real-world image compromises simply proportional?
I did not push the magnification to the maximum, the closest was that lizard that I shot. On paper MC-20 gives you more magnification than MC-14 when it comes to macro shooting (I hope that's what you meant). I'd think the MC-14 is sharper overall, but MC-20 is pretty close!
@@robinwong Thanks! Just reading your blog now :) My main concern is that if I buy this then I will also be inexorably drawn into the gravitational field of the 300mm PRO ;)
have you adjust the auto focus data of the len now that youve change the range of the lens and did that make a different to it performance.. or does the camera make adjust to it set up once you add the mc20. Im say as you would normally do when you get new lens is needed. what do think about the 150 400mm f4.5 due soon
I have this combo. And a couple things to add. Bird wildlife is harder to photograph, they stay way way less still so higher 800 + Shutter speed is a must for most birds, which limits this lens substantially. So don't expect great pictures as a wildlife photographer unless it's a bright day etc, high shutter speeds is more of a limit than this video foretells. The lens without the converter is strangely heavy for a m4/3 lens and not much better than some of the 100-300 options if at all in final image quality. The difference from 300 to 400 is not a big deal (If considering cheaper lenses), for a bird portrait this can be the difference of 1 step if you want to fill your frame with a medium sized bird. Again I must add for anyone wondering, this lens combo is not usable for wild bird photography in the same way as Robin is taking pictures of contained ones.
Hi Robin! A great video again. Love your channel! Once in a while I go wildlife shooting in Africa. So far I used the 70-300 4.0-5.6 lens. Since I own the 40-150 pro lens as well, I am thinking of replacing the 70-300 by the mc20 teleconverter to reach the 300m with my 40-150. What do you think? Would it be a wise step? Thanks in advance, Peter
EC-20 & MC-20 Which is better? Can you compare it on some 4/3 lens? MC-20 can work with non "micro" lens? I want to use some of that Olympus converters for my long focal catadioptric lens M42 MC Rubinar 1000/10 with 4/3 or micro 4/3 adapter. Now i'm using Soviet's made 2X conveter MC КОНВЕРТЕР K-1. It's not bat but i thing it can be better.
I don't have the EC-20, even if I do, there is no way to compare the new MC-20 to it as they fit onto different lenses. I don't understand your questions about micro lenses. MC-20 can only work with two lenses now: 40-150mm F2.8 PRO and 300mm F4 IS PRO. both are not macro lenses.
@@robinwong mIcro 4/3 lenses, not macro :) I mean - what is better if i will use some big non original lens, telescope for example? Or older 4/3 lens(300/2.8 for example) with adapter MMF-1 ? . Both EC-20 and MC-20 are just teleconverters (or Barlow lens like for telescopes), main difference between them is Flange focal distance. I need to know what is better? Longer flange focal distance or shorter? According to the laws of physics longer must be better, because it have smaller angle of light refraction.
@@AlexanderA80 I tried (i) Oly 4/3 (not micro 4/3) 50-200mm wth teleconverters x1.4 and x2. Compared with (ii) Oly micro 4/3 300mm Pro wth tele x1.4. Clearly results were far superior wth Only mft 300.. I also compared Panasonic 100-300mm older version. At roughly matched up distances of 100 mm, 200mm, 300mm reach, Pana was better than Oly non-micro 4/3 (with and without teleconverters). One apology, I did very rough testing (I may be faulted for that). Autofocus sadasy faster on Pany 100-300 and Oly 300 compared to Oly 50-200. Camera Only EM1 Mk ii
Unfortunately, no, they won't work, because Olympus designed it for optical compatibility with only the Olympus two lenses for now. Panasonic has their own teleconverter.
Stellar images! Great review. I've always stayed away from 2X teleconverters but this one seems to work very well with the 2 lenses that you mentioned it is compatible with. I'm thinking of getting the 40-150 2.8 with the 1.4 tele as I've been seeing some good deals on ebay for used. I'm currently using the 75-300 which is good just mostly but sometimes inconsistent. Thanks for the info.
Thanks for the kind words. There is a significant difference between the 75-300mm lens vs 40-150mm PRO! Definitely not built the same way. Getting the 1.4x converter is a good option!
@@robinwong I've used the MC-14 on it, its a manual focus lens so the electronic contacts don't need to connect. It was originally a full frame lens but to my suprise it is sharp on MFT too. The fact it has an extension to the mount for MFT is why it has the gap for the adapter. Now that I think about it you could probably use the teleconverter on any adapted lens (an adapter without optical elements) as it creates the space for the teleconverter (however you could use the original lenses teleconverter too... I suppose).
@@crankCINEMA I'd highly suggest testing with the MC-20 first before making any conclusions, as MC-20 has a different design in comparison to MC-14, both are very different adapters. There may be some issues (lenses won't focus properly, etc), so I would not be so quick to say it works before trying it out.
@@crankCINEMA Have u tried the trick adapting Only MC x1.4 n x2 wth older lenses? BTW, I hv Oly non MFT 50-200 and TCs x1.4 and x2 for non-MFTs. Not impressed with autofocus n sharpness n heavy also.
I put my new MC-20 onto my 40-150 f2.8 PRO and it comes up with Check status of the lens. It is on my OM D E M1 MkII. Previously used MC-14. What is the problem??
@@robinwong Right. I tried to update the firmware. I had to install the new Olympus Workspace software to do that (right?) but the firmware install bombed. I'm frustrated! Maybe you could do a "how to" video on this?
Robin did you find that stopping down, perhaps one stop, would help the sharpness with the converter? I know it typically does but in your case most of your shots are wide open. Is that because your iso was alrady too high and you did not want to experiment with narrow apertures?
The light level prevented me from doing that. If you saw the EXIF data, I was shooting at dangerously low shutter speeds, at rather high ISO (1000 or above). If I increase my ISO further, more details will be lost and that is not a good representation of what the lens can do. I am sure others would do this test, maybe with the birds or animals under direct sunlight.
What about adapted lens? If I have a metabones non speedbooster version on Canon lenses, do you think the MC-20 will clear the protuded lens and work..?
Thank you for another great review! Very very helpful! I have 40-150 pro + MC-14 and I am happy with the image quality and sharpness, I am an amateur photographer who is interested in wildlife and sports photos, I really want to get 300 Pro lens for sharpness, yes, for me sharpness in the photo is very important, so if I get MC-20 with my 40-150, how close sharpness can I get compare to 300 F4, is it close or just reasonable? If it is close, I prefer getting MC-20 combination instead of 300 F4, it's more versatile and handy and economic for me. What do you think? How close 40-150+MC-20 to 300 F4?
Let me try to understand you. Are you asking how is the lens losing brightness when using teleconverter? If that is your question, then the answer is because the teleconverter uses only the center potion of the main lens, hence the aperture opening has become smaller.
40-150mm is a PRO lens, hence it will outperform 75-300mm. The MC-20 does not degrade the image quality by that much, as I have shown in this article. even with MC-20 attached, you get F5.6 on the 40-150mm pRO, which is an advantage over F6.7 on 75-300mm longest end.
Hi Robin: Love your Video Reviews. I have the 2x adapter, when I use it with my 300mm F-4 I am not at all sure of the results. At 1/1000 sec and F-8 I seem to have a shakey backgreound.
According to the laws of physics longer must be better, because it have
smaller angle of light refraction.

M.Zuiko Digital 2x Teleconverter MC-20 - Does this lens work with the 14-150mm Lens
Hi, are there many differences in terms of sharpness and AF speed using 1,4x instead of 2,0x?
Same questions, no response ?
Thank you
Nice!
Hi, please, is it compatible with the 12-100 mm f/4 IS PRO lens? Thanks for answering :-)
I'd be interested in whether this works with lumix lenses like the 50-200mm since they also have room for teleconverters.
Unfortunately, no, they won't work, because Olympus designed it for optical compatibility with only the Olympus two lenses for now. Panasonic has their own teleconverter.
Can this 2.0 converter work with G9 body and Olympus 40 to 150 pro lens combo
I have been looking at this combo to replace my super telezoom 75-300mm do you think this is a much better lens?
Hi Robin, I have a question, may I use this teleconverter with a camera E-M10 II? Thanks
Fredy
FYI everyone, it is compatible with the Samyang 135mm F2 MFT mount ;)
Have you tried it and verified that it works without issues?
Not impressed with autofocus n sharpness n heavy also.
can this converter work with panasonic dg100-400?
I put my new MC-20 onto my 40-150 f2.8 PRO and it comes up with Check status of the lens. It is on my OM D E M1 MkII. Previously used MC-14. What is the problem??
Kindly update the firmware for both your camera and lens.
What about the 1.4???
This Teleconverter works with Leica lens for Panasonic ?
No
What about adapted lens? If I have a metabones non speedbooster version on Canon lenses, do you think the MC-20 will clear the protuded lens and work..?
Also, what's the closest focus system when a 300mm f4 attached with an MC-20..? Thanks.
No, the teleconverter works only with Olympus two lenses as stated in the video at the moment. It won't work with anything else.
@@timzlow 1.43m fromthe camera sensor
Hmm.... someone uses the MC-20 with extension tube on a 60mm F2.8 macro. I am still wondering if it can be done.
@@timzlow it is impossible to fit the MC-20 into the macro lens. Trust me on this. The protrusion has no space to go into the lens.
How close 40-150+MC-20 to 300 F4?
how it decreased aperture?
Let me try to understand you. Are you asking how is the lens losing brightness when using teleconverter?
If that is your question, then the answer is because the teleconverter uses only the center potion of the main lens, hence the aperture opening has become smaller.
@@robinwong Yes. You write understand. But what kind degree has become smaller?
40-150 & mc20 vs 75-300 !?!?!?!?! By the way i have the 12-100mm ...... and Need more tele
40-150mm is a PRO lens, hence it will outperform 75-300mm. The MC-20 does not degrade the image quality by that much, as I have shown in this article. even with MC-20 attached, you get F5.6 on the 40-150mm pRO, which is an advantage over F6.7 on 75-300mm longest end.
cool channel : )
Thanks!
Hi Robin: Love your Video Reviews. I have the 2x adapter, when I use it with my 300mm F-4 I am not at all sure of the results. At 1/1000 sec and F-8 I seem to have a shakey backgreound. I would love to send you a photo or two. My Facebook page is Michael Messner | Facebook The Belted Kingfisher is cropped but still not all that great. I wonder what shutter speed I have to use, alos what stabilization settings. Thanks Mike
Hi and help please. I have Om-1 with zuiko 40-150mm an d 2x converter mc 20!!! But the camera does not react at all!!! It says "check the status of a lens." I do not know what to do??? Please help!
Nice video as always. I think it would be better to do a video out in the wild instead of a zoo type place. That's where reach becomes important.
Just ordered the MC-20, this is what I got tonight with the MC-14:
