Where is proper Adrien spotlight? And don't get me started on the season finale. Visually it was amazing and the scenes themselves were quite great, but the fact that they pushed Adrien out of the plot was absolutely horrible. This is why the movie is so much better--Adrien is not sidelined! Goodness.
I've put so much years into this franchise; I don't want to give up watching it. But goodness, it is pure painful. Like, as a person who aspires to be a published writer one day, I do not understand how people sit down & purposefully write down these plotlines. It's Greed isn't it? They just want money, marketing, plushies, toys. Man. Why can't we have passionate writers nowadays? I feel bad for the actual artists who love creating. They're forced to create these sublime creations that are mediocre at best just because its easy money for the higher ups.

So much of this movie feels like it was written based on what the fanbase wanted:
    - "Ladybug doesn't exist with you"
    - The masquerade Ball scene
    - Gabriel's emotional breakdown over Adrien being Chat Noir
    - Rooftop patrol scenes
    - Marinette showing up in a Ladybug dress (totally missed opportunity in S5)
    - The double heartbreak scene
Granted the show does do some of these, but most of these concepts existed in fanfics long before the Season 5 finale and executed better than the movie.

For people saying this movie feels like fanfiction, it literally is💀 This is Jeremy Zag’s take on the miraculous concept. The show writers didn’t write this film, so that’s why you might feel like the characters are a bit different ( ex. Marinette not being a stalker, Adrien being more gloomy, Gabriel being a decent father, etc.) This also explains why the miraculous powers work differently here, like why there’s no lucky charm and how akumas work differently. This is Jeremy’s fanfiction adapted with an $80 million euro budget, and hell, the lost potential was insane and it was rushed but he delivered regardless😭 at least in the fandom’s eyes , lord knows we’ve been starved of ANY decent writing💀

Instead, they probably felt like they needed to get it over with or they might have been stressing over some bits more than others (maybe they felt both and they at least wanted to get the animation right, and didn't expect the storyline to be that great since there is literally a LOVE SQUARE between the SAME people and that's just, "What? No.") Plus, I feel like they might have been pressured to at least have something from the original, which could have caused them to not stand up and do better, or do everything they wanted to. And it’s within your rights to hate it; I won’t bash you for it.
For myself; I enjoyed everything this movie is: I think bias with the fact that I read deep stories.

Yes!! Especially considering that Marinette’s dad was already there. I imagine it would have been more impactful if she had first seen Alya and Nino in danger. She could have a moment of panic, where she realizes she has the ability to help them, but doesn’t know if she’s up to the task. And then, while she panics, she could have seen her dad and then she’s like “oh shit”, and then suits up, no room for hesitation.
That would be “show, don’t tell”, and would have the song feel more deserved, instead of repeating over and over how love makes her brave

Also, having Alya not be physically close to or associated with Ladybug despite studying together to have Alya suspect less of Marinette, and just makes the world seem more grand rather than reusing main side characters.

In the show, *no one* must know their true identities, and they mustn’t find out each other’s identities either, yet Ladybug was the one handing out all the miraculous to her classmates. Then not to mention she revealed herself to Alya, and Luka somehow knows both their secrets. But what’s stopping Ladybug from opening up to Chat Noir? Well, if they reveal themselves to each other then Chat Blanc is bound to happen, so those two can’t get a happy ending.
Marinette in the show ceases to function when she’s around Adrien, Adrien only sees her as a friend because he only has eyes for Ladybug, Ladybug could give less of a damn about Chat Noir because she’s smitten for Adrien. It’s all over the place. And yet, they’ve kissed on multiple occasions. It’s very strange.
The movie handled their dynamic way better in my opinion. Like, what if when Tikki tells Marinette that she needs to embrace the power of love, Marinette interprets this as romantic love, and thus comes up short, only for Tikki to tell her that in order to embrace love, you must first love yourself…
Or maybe not, idk, I’m not a professional writer, but then again, it doesn’t seem like the Miraculous writers are either.

And the funny part is: Thomas Astruc (creator of Miraculous) said this after the movie premiered in France:
"The movie gives you what you want, The show gives you what you need", plus a lot of stuff saying that he needed to extend the show as much as he can or else he would have been out of job, and that you need to be an animation industry expert and also french to understand

For me, my biggest pet peeve was Adrien's whole saltiness towards Ladybug rejecting him softly and the two getting together by the end. Like, I know it's Miraculous, and I know it's Adrien, and I know it's just the default way couples are portrayed in any sort of media, but it still bugs me that he doesn't even take Ladybug's call for help seriously until Plagg snapped him out of it. And I really don't like how petty he was towards her during battle.
I think it would've worked so much better, not just as a healthier example in love but also thematically with the rest of the story beats, if Adrien was like 'I respect your decision. And don't worry, nothing could stop me from appreciating the time we spend together' (cheesy, I know, but I'm just making this up on the spot) or something, especially since it would tie back into how Marionette felt like she couldn't be loved as herself in the early parts of the movie. It would've made the duo's connection feel stronger and the ending would've felt more earned cause we know that they're genuinely just a go.od match and work well together, romantic feelings or not.
Or, alternatively, they could've kept the salty-Adrien sideplot, but halfway during the battle, the two reconcile and he apologizes for being a jerk. He could briefly say how some other stuff came up to tip his mo.od just over the edge at the time (argument with his dad, Marionette's love offer was likely a big reminder for Ladybug again and maybe he could've felt guilty for rejecting her?), and he was projecting his repressed emotions onto the failed relationship between the duo. But yeah, it really just rubs me the wrong way how he was so pissy, and then by the end, he got Ladybug as a partner anyways despite never addressing his behavior.
Unrelated: Until you mentioned the dad, I literally forgot how they were setting him up in the movie TwT
Also Unrelated: My favorite scene is definitely when Ladybug and Chat Noir are sparring on the ro.oftops.

I think the main reason they had Tom be very prominent in the movie was because they wanted to show off the parallels between him and Gabriel. Since he was a lovable father while Gabriel doesn't really give his son the time of day. It works very well and really makes it more impactful.
Also loved that Chloe wasn't throwing herself at Adrien the whole time like in the show. Marinette becoming more confident was honestly probably the best part to watch as she finally had enough guts to talk back to Chloe. Unlike the show. Which- considering that the movie had like 1 hr and a half, they did amazing bcs the show has nothing on the movie despite the fact they're 5 seasons in and 8 yrs "working" on it. Sort of like The Mask. Especially since it's known to target those of deep, negative states and ultimately is associated with pure chaos, to see how he would have become this other worldly character when he first attempted to use the miraculous on the proposal-gone-wrong guy, it would have made much more sense to see him go from remorseful and scared before putting it back on to eff it, let's do this afterwards.

If they actually used the concept of Adrien having been home schooled prior to and being very socially inept (or at least that would have made much more sense for his character), Marinette as clumsy, anxious, and unconfident, and Garbriel as his lamenting self, yet the "miraculous" gave each of them the ability to break free from those confines; Adrien could be playful and open, Marinette confident and sure, Gabriel determined and vengeful... Now, I know that's basically what ended up happening for the most part - but they never really played on that. Had it come down to Marinette getting Ladybug stripped away from her, the whole "Ladybug doesn't exist without you" lecture and her ultimately finding courage within herself as Marinette without he mask would have felt much more earned I feel.

Gabrielle is pretty good but. My hats off to Chloe's glow up.
I personally found this to be an amazing film.
The push to overcome her fears. and the Tikki saying if you want to save your loved ones you'll have to face your fears. For me it's not detracted from the scene because she didn't see anyone she loved in danger, it's because the characters sow so much chaos that her family will eventually be in danger. Sure she could run away and have it potentially not impact but if you don't become ladybug, what does the future hold for your family. Additionally, Marinette loves everyone and wants to be noticed. She's struggling against the fact that she doesn't think she can live up to everyone's vision of her. You can see this in the film as she sees everyone talking about how weird she is. She doesn't feel she can be loved by everyone or be that hero.
Gabriel jumping straight into a villain scene after showing his as compassionate. I also thought this was acceptable because he simply embraced what he had to do. Sow chaos, become evil, do anything to bring his wife back. I didn't think it was too out of place for him to jump into it.
Marinette not overcoming her clumsiness and still doubting herself at the end because she wasn't ladybug, also no problem here. Just because she became more confident doesn't mean she didn't have her doubts about her hero abilities as being Marinette. Ladybug is how she became confident, it has power that comes with the suit.
In addition to Gabrielle winning the fight. Cat Noir and Ladybug were not fighting together. It shows in the film and I think losing in that moment and getting an ending where Adrienne actually gets to have some closure in a finale is awesome. This ended with an emotional banger and that's really what the film did right. I think they pushed the emotional side of things and didn't have to spoon feed us everything.
Some things I wish they would have changed. Cat Noir and Ladybug Duet for when they found their powers. Marinette saying saying she's not the hero Tikki is looking for and Cat noir saying he can finally not be himself and instead be a hero would be an interesting dichotomy while also both gaining powers. However, both have the same internal conflicts for wanting/not wanting to be super heroes. Marinette doesn't think she can because clumsy/weird and Adrienne wanting to because he's mostly alone, no parents,/sad and wants that escape.
I really hate the direction they took Plaggs character. Just an old man with gas that hates everything.
Overall enjoyed the film and yea, I could nitpick it like in the video, but I don't think the things you mentioned detracted from story the put together.

She was literally standing a few meters away from gabriel and adrien when gabriel found out so she must have found out at the same time. The only reason why I’m still watching is because I spent the past 4 seasons watching so I might as well see how the first saga finishes.
Coming into the movie, I had no expectations at all besides really good animation and yet, I was thoroughly surprised and enjoyed the movie a lot. It wasn’t perfect, no. The songs were a bit much (though most I enjoyed) and the singing voices sounded drastically different from the speaking voices which was really jarring. The ending was rushed and we didn’t get to see Ladybug and Chat Noir fight many villains. But hot damn, I think I liked the characterization of nearly every character in the movie compared to the show besides maybe Plagg. Hawkmoth/Gabriel were way more sympathetic and I actually felt something during the final battle. The visuals were absolutely stunning especially with some of the songs.

    Like spoilers:
Adrien actually finding out that his dad was Hawkmoth. It still baffles me that the show kept Adrien in the dark and lets him remember his mentally abusive dad as a hero. Wtf.

I suppose it all comes down to: "season 5 isn't supposed to be the last season of our show, so it's ending can't solve everything, otherwise the show must end". I don't really agree with this line of thought because a show can create new reasons for it to continue, instead of relying on the same old ones. I wanted a confrontation between Gabriel and Adrien, I wanted a full scale identity reveal, it was the right time! Buuuut we didn't get any on that... So sad.

This franchise is just the right amount of frustrating to be fun. I really liked the changes they did to the story, to the point that every time it went back to series canon it felt like a betrayal more than anything. But now we can say that the movie got Ladybug and Chat Noir together while the series got Marinette and Adrien together and it somehow isn't the same thing.

    • @aris1200

That's what I was thinking as well. Personally, the only thing I really love about this movie is the amount of LadyNoir content. At the end of season 4 I was expecting season 5 to be full of memorable LadyNoir moments, but we got an insane amount of Adrienette instead (better than nothing, don't get me wrong, but... It's not the same)

I'm pretty sure Marrinette's dad was meant to get akumatized into a balloon monster in an earlier version of the script. He literally covered himself with them earlier and now was very distraught about disappointing his daughter.
But it was cut because... reasons.
Personally, I found the story to be far too clunky to enjoy (and I didn't like most songs, so that's an instant downer), but I understand why people would like it. It basically gives you everything that shows either keeps teasing, but never actually giving to you.
PS. I'm watching the English dub, so I don't know yet how the current season ends.

So glad you made a video about this movie!! The film was really good and a huge improvement from the show. But you are right that the writing falters and feels cringy in many places. Superhero origin stories are fun but Marinette definitely did not have enough of a motive to dive into it and I wish they had shown more of Chat Noir's reason for wanting to become a superhero too.
The writers always seem to put less effort into his story even though I find him a more complex and interesting character.

After his desperation, he finally feels like he’s in control of something and use the power for himself. He can create chaos. And he chooses that to get his wife back. And he now lives for the power which consumes him. Only his son brings back his humanity and compassion. Personally I think that was the motivation

I also wish Cristina Vee did Marinettes singing, but I got used to the jarring change of voice acting eventually and the singing sounded so good that part of me is not complaining. Overall though, I genuinely enjoyed this move. Part of that could be clouded by the contrast of how much better it is than the show though lmao

And you just explained it perfectly, they should've thrown in Tom being in danger at the fair, then Mari at the end letting Tom drop her off would be better because it's like she's valuing him more (for like of a better phrase ig)

Me and my sister watched Miraculous as a guilty pleasure way back when so this was something we couldn't skip out on. When going into the movie I expected this to be the show's level of underdeveloped and bait-y but was so surprised to actually see that they did something better than the show with its characters, not to mention its visuals are stunning and breathtaking. It felt satisfying to see Marionette and Adrien get the proper development they actually deserved. While I think the writing is fairly subpar, it excelled at being better than the show which is enough for me. If you're expecting Miraculous to be this phenomenal writing piece then you will be disappointed, but it's fun if you just look at it as a silly cartoon flick.

I am laughing that they wrapped up the HM arc in a single movie when this show took 5 whole seasons which technically does make it better that way.

This movie’s biggest problem is the fact that the premise for it all fits a longer running show better, instead of a quick movie.
However, the actual cartoon is utter garbage that I’ll never watch again, because it’s filled with bad decision after bad decision.
This movie, on the other hand, was so enjoyable to watch. Was it incredible? No. But this was everything that I, and everyone else who’s followed Miraculous for 5 seasons, needed to see, especially after that awful s5 finale.
I’ve seen the sentiment that Miraculous just needs to be rebooted with better writers and a better show runner, and I agree. Honesty, in a perfect world, this movie wouldn’t have been a movie, but the series reboot we all needed.

I think my absolute favorite song in the movie is You Are Ladybug for a few reasons- the VA for Tikki actually sings for Tikki as well (the singer for Marinette in the dub is NOT the singer for Marinette despite being able to SING lol, which i still don't fully get but whatever; that's a whole different thing for me) and the song itself is fun AND the OG melody of the Miraculous Ladybug theme song is used in part of the song with (obviously) different lyrivs. But just hearing that familiar tune in the movie, and hearing it being sung by Tikki n Marinette STILL gets to me. It's just a really great touch that I REALLY freaking appreciate tbh.
The art style is VASTLY different from the show and I also greatly love it. It was a bit strange at first, since the movie gives them less of a... cartoon-y feel, I guess is the best way to put it? Like, the colors aren't as bright or anything and to me, makes everyone look a lot more realisitic.
The Hawkmoth discovering Cat Noir secret thing was great, the ending ball reveal scene was incredible. I have my own personal issues/nitpicks but I watched this movie with a very surface level view in general- just enjoying what it gave and not really trying to compare stuff to the show because I know it's not gonna be the same. All in all, I really loved it and as a voice actor lover, I'm super glad the OG voice actors for the characters reprised their roles! (Again, other than Vee singing for Marinette even though Vee can sing; Papenbrooke who voices Adrien... he sings in the show but I can definitely agree it wasn't movie-level quality so I get why they gave HIM a new singer for the dub LOL)).
