In this episode, we are going to talk about how to deal with intrusive thoughts related to hurting someone while driving. This is often referred to as a sub-type of OCD called hit-and-run OCD. When a person experiences Hit-and-Run OCD they will have intrusive or unwanted thoughts about hurting other people while driving, and then engaging in various compulsive behaviors (mental and physical) to neutralize these fears.
As a reminder, intrusive thoughts are unwanted notions and ideas that invade a person’s mind and cause a great deal of distress. These thoughts are invasive and unwelcomed and are not a reflection of the person’s true desires or wishes.
In this episode, we are going to discuss the strategies and tactics that can be used in dealing with Hit and Run OCD. Click here to get instant access to the workshop: restoredminds.com/breaking-fr...

Thank you so much for making these videos. I no longer feel like I’m going through this alone and there is hope.

Thanks for the video. For the last few months I have been having thoughts about; what if I hit/scratch a car, didn't realize it and drove off. Until a few days ago that thought changed into, what if I hit someone and didn't realize it. I have a dash cam and have to replay the footage, sometimes over and over, making sure I didn't miss seeing someone. And I actually did drive around basically an empty parking lot for a good 5 mins. I also checked my car to make sure there weren't any dents on the front or worse, I check to see if there's any blood on the tires. And I check the news to see if there was any hit and run in the area. Also I've downloaded police scanner logs and have listened to see if there was any hit and run victims.
I'm only glad to see I'm not the only one who has these same thoughts.

I did all of this too, except the police logs. I'm having hit and run OCD for a good time, with some ups and downs. But I never really FACED the problem and tried to ignore the compulsions, so I didn't overcome this yet. My advice is that you go after treament as soon as possible, and search for videos like this. The sooner you practice some driving exercises with a professional, the better.

I drove around for hours back in 1993 with this type of OCD. Hours! Had to take 80mg Prozac to get me out of this pattern after having not drove for 3 months due to being disabled with this facet of OCD.

I would change hurting to killing. Because cars often kill people when used negligently

This started happening to me a while ago. I get these thozghts the whole time while driving. Thanfully I dont feel like going back to a place to check if I hit anyone but the thozghts give me so much anxiety while driving that I start to have fears that the anxiety in the first place will cause me to nit being focused and killing someone. I am especially anxious about killing a child.

I am anxious about children too. I always thought it is a curious fact: it doesn't matter who the hit person is, a hit is a hit, but for us, the fear is stronger towards kids, since they are very young and innocent. It's really a moral and guilt problem inside us that doesn't make much sense, and we can cure this. i hope you are better now.
