This was the first RPG I bought with my own money.
I started on 5e so the fact that EVERY FREAKING THING EVER had an rpg system by 1995 fascinates me.
There's something special about that first RPG, no matter how good or bad it was (mine was Star Ace).
And while there's so many new RPG's out these days, I have to say that so many of them are various brands of fantasy, and it'd be nice to see more of a variety of settings.
I like the second basic set better than the Advanced Set.
I'm hearing good thinks about it, and I'll check them both out sometime soon.
This is one of my favorite systems for supers, its so easy to learn. There is a really great retroclone of it that is in development called Heroic by ZEG Media that really improves upon the universal table. The creator, Bear the Gen-X GM, has a youtube channel he talks about it quite often.
Cool stuff, thanks for letting me know. Although it's been 25+ years since I last played it, I've got loads of fond memories, great game.
I am surprised TSR didn’t try to make a stand-alone X-Men RPG in the 90s. TSR Marvel super heroes feel wholesome compared to 90s Marvel.
I remember they did the Children of the Atom book which had the X-Men in it. While I had friends who were massive X-Men fans back then, perhaps their real popularity didn't hit until the 90's? (a quick google tells me I'm wrong, as Days of Future Past was published in 1981, so it does seem weird they didn't try for a standalone game).
That would have been cool.
It was extremely well-supported at the time, and fans of the system have continued to create "unofficial" updates and tweaks to this day, despite the system being out of print for decades. I still find it one of the most player-friendly and flexible rules systems I've ever used, and I still use it from time to time.
While doing the Retro RPG and this video, I was astounded as to how well it was supported. I'd seen a bunch of books back in the day, but there were so many. Fantastic stuff.
First ever RPG system I ever played and still one of my favorites
thanks for the nostalgia Freddy 😸
Not my first, but I did play it back in the late 80's, so going through it again did hit my with a wave of nostalgia.
Cheers.
I like this one although I mainly used it for reference though to convert the superheroes to BRP. I loved the stand-ups and scenario. A lot of fun.
A really solid game, and amazing how well supported it was. I can see how it'd be useful as a reference. Great stuff.
I was going to say you were wrong about the feat rolls, but the first basic set does not have the intensity rules yet.
Intensity was a difficulty setting that was explained in the Advanced set and the second Basic set.
Intensity was ranked the same ways as abilities and powers. If the intensity match the ability then it would be a yellow feat. If it was one or three lower then green. If intensity was one rank higher then it was impossible.
I'm hearing good thinks about the 2nd Basic Set, so I'll have to get around to covering it sometime soon. Cheers.
@@RPGGamer That would be cool. Looking forward to that.
Interesting to see a d100 system where higher is better. And the universal table makes it easy to see the levels of success (than, say, having to deal with numbers).
While I have an innate dislike of tables in gameplay, the universal table is simple enough that it doesn't bother me much, and it remains a fast and fun system.
This is a great RPG.
I've been pleasantly surprised by the quality of the early TSR games, while I remembered this one being fun, I didn't expect it to stand up to my memories, and it really does.
