Playing as Volkmar, AI Thorek conducted the best AI invasion I've ever experienced in TWWH, maybe all of TW. For one, the strategic/diplo basis was correct. Two, he launched a multi-pronged surprise attack at the perfect time, when my armies were well west wiping out Arkhan and Reponse. He attacked with three strong armies at once in a wide, cohesive front and occupied several of my settlements immediately. He consolidated gains and sent reinforcements, and also used his ally Khalida to hold gains and prod my weak points. I had NEVER seen a TWWH AI execute an invasion like this. It sent me scrambling to move troops back east, force peace with Arkhan and emergency recruit. The resulting war lasted many turns and was extremely fun to play. Hats off to CA, I had all but given up in seeing the AI ever launch a well-planned attack like this.
Mannfred: Phew, I can finally fight someone else. Those dwarfs eastward of me started to become annoying. Thank goodness I left that blasted castle and can enjoy some other opponents. Thorek Ironbrow 25 meters away from Mannfred: Move it lads! We're settling in!
I'm really liking your reviews. What I find refreshing (and almost surprising) is given your experience and skill level; you are still talking about the campaigns from the perspective of all players and new players. I find too many other reviews feel too biased based on the reviewer's play-style, and feel almost dismissive of campaigns that are not meta-sweaty. Thorek is definitely my favourite dwarf campaign as well.
good tip is after the greenskins you are right on queeks doorstep and have to handle him quickly he tends to step out of his city so take him when he is out back, then either go to war with khalida or kroq gar (i usually get a military alliance with kroq as he has some relics) and i just go north from there
What I did was took out Arachnos, went east and killed the vampires, sold their settlements to Khalida to get good relations, then went south and took out the skaven that Kroq Gar is fighting. Sacked, occupied, and sold the settlements to Kroq Gar for tons of money and reputation, which gave me 2 allies making it easy to deal with Skarbrand and Queek
Playing as Khalida, I had a military alliance by the end of the short campaign. Things were looking good. I was taking the continent and Thorek was happy expanding north through the mountains. Then I was hit with the Dwarf endgame scenario and all those big armies protecting my main base became an imminent danger.
Right now, the scripted event to confederate Karak Azul is not working and never happens. You are also not able to confederate them until you confederate another Dwarf faction. Also, the unique Dwarf ancestor from Thorek can get all 3 unique Thane skills at the same time for some reason
This is one of the finest series of videos *anyone* has ever done in the community. It really has helped me reengage and enjoy the replayability. Would you consider doing a similar series for each faction showing every unique building and its effects? There are campaigns I want to try to get every unique building or rush a specific one that synergizes
Not 5 minutes ago I was thinking about trying out Thorek for the first time. I swear Legend has evolved from just being able to perfectly read Total War AI to reading minds.
Settra is more stubborn than any dwarf More arrogant than any elf More devout than any human More war-like that any greenskin More omnipresent than any of the Gods Also has more gold than the lizardmen
Thorek was my 1st Immportal Empires campaign. And up to today it is my favote one. The only problem i had with this, is that Thorek builds up Grudges for not building his artifacts, and as the different parts are so far away, you have to deal with 100 grudge negative effects throughout almost all of the campaign. I know there was a patch for this, but i am not sure if this "problem" is gone.
it happens more slowly. Used to be max level grudges in only a handful of turns. Now you still get some early game respite before it turns up the heat.
These videos are always great, but this is the first one that REALLY made me want to drop everything and start a new Campaign. I love dwarves, but their lack of flair has bothered me for a while and it seems like thorek has some really cool mechanics to add that flair!
Thorek might be the king of sieges only after the passive mortis engine like Festus or Morghur, he can bombard with runes infinitely and end the siege by himself, so broken and so fun to cheese
None of your videos have appeared in my feed for months legend, I don't know if it's happening to others but I genuinely thought you were off RUclips or something, it wasn't until I searched you that I realised you've just been uploading as usual. Some algorithm trickery afoot!
I just got TWW3 recently and this was the first campaign I played. I was doing Ok, having taken most of the mountain range and I had just taken Karaz-a-Karak. I had not went to war with or confederated any of the other Dwarf factions and was on good terms with them. I was constantly beating back armies from Skarbrand and the greenskins coming in from the wastes, so most of my focus was there, I was about to move out to take out Skarbrands faction until Kroq-Gar south of me declared war. They were fighting Khemri who I was allied with, so I thought they'd leave me alone, but it turns out TikTakToe had allied Kroq-Gar and they together were beating the shit out of Setra. I unfortunately had left the area where Lybaras spawns completely unguarded. Just as I had pulled my spare armies back to deal with Kroq-Gar I got the grudge too far event. My main army with all my good troops was in Karaz-a-Karak completely surrounded, the dwarves that spawn near the dragon high elf guy were alive and started taking my settlements there, and I was losing ground to the lizards in the south, not to mention the unending stacks of greenskins and chaos demons I hadn't been able to finish off. With that my first playthrough came to an end as I had no way to fight on so many fronts. I played another 10 turns or so and watched as my armies and strongholds fell 1 by 1 until I gave in and called it quits. It was such a surprise coming from playing TWW2 where by turn 100 you're near unstoppable. I may have lost, but those last 20 turns or so were so much fun.
Playing a Thorek SFO campaign right now. You're not kidding that the artefacts are pretty spread out, but at least you can get the Yoked Carnosaur pretty early. He is a massive force multiplier for Thorek's army considering he excels at multiple things the dwarf roster is weak at (speed, anti-large, melee attack). Very fun and unique unit. In my campaign the throng has affectionately named him "High King Grimli Bonebiter", after the truly ludicrous amount of tomb king units he has feasted on. No doubt Thorek disapproves of this irreverent use of Thorgrim's title, but such things can be tolerated for the sake of good morale on campaign!

Thorek seems to always be in control of those mountains when I'm around there, Skarbrand never goes that way unless I'm working my way through the jungles east of there. Then he steamrolls through. Turn 134, still no confederation offer for Karak Azul. However, they’ve declared war on me, because they ally with Khalid’s and Imrik. Khalid’s also had Treaty’s with Imrik. And they had one of my artifacts, so ofc they had to go. So now Elves and dwarves hate me. Azul still lives. Got Belegar, tho. (And karak Hirn, not that they matter) Thorek was wiped out before turn 15.
You don't get to confederate Karak Azul with an event. Either it's bugged or removed. -edit after a playthrough: You also cannot confed him the normal way as the option is not there. The only way to get Kazador is to let Thorgrim confed him and then confed Thorgrim.
Thought my Thorek campaign was going well after 20ish turns. Was close to a non aggression pact with khalida and krokgar. Then within 2 turns both declared war on me and starting sending multiple armies. With dwarves slow replenish rates it became a real pain
Khalida should be super easy to get a military alliance with. If you're going north to get the next closest artifact after the greenskins, you'll end up fighting some vampires in her province. You can gift her two of the settlements the vampires were holding for a quick alliance. They aren't suitable climates for dwarves anyway, and if you wanted to keep those settlements and complete province they're in, you'd have to also take the settlements Khalida starts with. So it's better to sell them to her if you're interested in peace.
Missed out looking at Thorek or his skill line, I'm not much of a Dwarf fan myself but if it looked good I'd give his campaign a shot. I tried them in WH2 but find Dwarfs quite boring. If I have a faction that just stands still and shoots/tanks in melee I like to have something to do like spellcasting (i.e. Empire or Vampirates).
I played 3 Thorek campaign but so far no confe event. Move to north b/c most of artifact materials there and suitable climate. Make friend with Tiktaqto, Kroq-gar and Teclics so that they can deal with Kairos. But also need to stay away from tomb kings.
I don't think so, he's not a base game 2 faction but an FLC for the dwarfs who are unlocked with either game 1 or their DLC. In comparison, you could buy the warden and the launch, so a game 2 DLC to get access to Greenskins and their FLC
