I personally stay away from stores who comment on every current event or condition. That seems so patronizing to the me. Just because one has an audience doesn’t mean they should spew their opinions at every turn. Hoping to sway the crowd with them.
Me too. The woman in this video sounds so entitled to expect a company to make comments about whatever social issues she personally cares about. It's a fabric store, lady
I also worked there for a fair few years before the pandemic. She's right, the pay is pretty crap, but they hire a very diverse lot of people and were kind of known for that; both stores I worked at had at least one Pagan! While most of us had craft and/or sewing experience, you do run into a lot more inexperienced workers when they do their seasonal hiring for the holidays. I haven't worked there or even gone in since before covid, so things can definitely change. I'm seeing videos claiming that the company is in trouble and will probably close soon. Anyhow, I also wish companies would just keep quiet and DO better rather than publish their (possibly phony) stances on social media.
Took me a minute to realize this was put out 3 years ago. Our 3 JoAnns within driving distance are fine. I will continue to shop there, and also at the ones where my kids live when I visit them. I appreciate a store that doesn't feel it is necessary to pander to the politics obsessed segment of the population. We come to JoAnns for sewing and craft supplies, not to be lectured.😉
These are surface level complaints. They have not been well thought out. I plan on shopping at Joann's still. Especially on site. The people there are great. The products are fine, same as the materials I've ordered elsewhere. I respect the right you have to express your opinion and that you felt the need to share you're thoughts. Personally, I encourage anyone watching this to think a little harder about what is being said with one's own mind and experiences.
I’m located in south-central Wisconsin. I have nothing but wonderful things to say about Joanne’s. The people are courteous and helpful. I have not had any problems with Joanne’s fabric. I’ve been to quilt shops-the selection is horrible, the prices high and the employees are rude if you dare to admit that you don’t quilt-oh, you’re only a sewer! I’ve heard that so many times! I’ve also purchased from Joanne’s online and I’ve never had trouble with orders being incorrect, lost or long time deliveries. I don’t buy zippers from Joanne’s-I buy mine at Wawak. Sorry-I love Joanne’s!!!
It's not the company's job to speak on current events. It's not the job of businesses to have official statements on every political topic. It's the company's job to stock the shelves and sell items. They may or may not be good at that (varies a lot store by store), they may or may not have high quality products, that's beside my point. My point is, they're doing their job. Selling things. It's ridiculous that every company is expected to have a "we stand with abc," "we're anti-xyz," "down with this group," "unprecedented times" statement.
Our local quilt shop is $12.95-$15.00 a yard. I can't always justify that, but use them when I can. JoAnn's fills a necessary gap in our area, carrying things the local shop doesn't.
I believe whole heartedly in supply and demand. I shop at Joann’s in a pinch, and am glad they are available when I need a “last minute” item. I know quilt shop fabric is best but pricey. I don’t care what color skin shop owner has... or what their political beliefs are. I just want to have a respectful, pleasant experience when I spend my money. Employees working at Joann’s are people, just like you and me. They work where they can, until they develop skills and/or find something more suitable. Good employees gravitate towards better jobs, better pay, and better locations as their situations evolve. Bad mouthing a business is not a smart way to Increase the business of another.
Good thing I don't own a fabric business, then? I obviously don't have a problem with the good employees; the issue is the company treats them like crap and they leave.
She is 100% correct about the quality of JoAnn's cottons. Really bad. I just recently made an online purchase from Sauders Fabric. I could not believe the difference. Beautiful, soft, brilliant colors and a much heavier weight.
I'm totally with you on this. My JoAnn store has hired a fresh set of employees who know nothing about knitting, crochet, quilting, or needle felting. It's a complete 180 from the amazing crafting community/family I felt when I used to go there. Such a shame. I only buy there if I have no other choice. For fabric I go to fabric.com, knitpicks, WEBS, or paradise fibers for my wool needs. Sorry for the long comment.
As an employee, I'd attribute it mainly to a super high turnover rate. If they paid us better, the people who are passionate about the arts would stay. But as long as I've worked there, it's been clear Joann is never gonna be anything more than a side job, something to start you off after highschool, or some extra cash during college. I've worked there for a year, and upwards of 10 people have left in that time. Im close to leaving as well, tbh.
Yep All the house wares are cheap and overpriced. They send me a coupon for 50% off and when I try to use it my item is already 10% off and I can’t. The whole store is ‘on sale’ so you can’t get 40 or 50% off anything. Dumped them years ago
I currently am employed with a Joanns, and I feel that the points made here dont apply to every store. I'm a crafter, artist and so on. I dont know much about fabric, but those who work at my store that do are more than willing to teach me and I have been learning so much. The people here who work at the cut counter have been working here for years and have been working in fabric crafts for just as long, if not longer. I cant speak for other stores, but if you could see the store I work in youd see a group of people who absolutely love their crafts, their job and work hard to be as kind and caring towards our customers as possible. Dont give up just yet on our stores, I promise theres people here who do love what we do and genuinely want the best for our customers. On a side note, I do agree with buying from local stores when possible! Shop local! Always! Also for legal purposes, this is all my opinions and feelings and I do not speak for Joanns as a company.
@@user-lv4ok9vo5o I actually dont work there right now (life related, unrelated to Joanns), and I worked in a Pennsylvania store. I dont feel comfortable giving my full location.
@@HayaMikaChan Thats where I am.. south central.. I used to shop there all the time. Only remember one associate that was pretty prickly. Delaware and Maryland stores are wayy better. Like night and day.
I feel if you don't like Joann's then stop going there. It is not right for someone because they had a bad experience that you should bad mouth a whole store. I do believe that if you work in a fabric store you should know about fabrics. I have purchased a lot of supplies from Joann's and never had a problem.
I really appreciate that you actually offer some good alternatives rather than just recommend people look for them. Yes, people should look, but a head start is very appreciated!
This!!! This is the right way to call out a big company. So many people say "don't shop at x,y and z" but never give any reasons or alternatives. Thank you for all the links too! (bonus points for the dig at amazon) As someone new to sewing this is EXTREMELY helpful
I think you are venting your own personal feelings.. I, myself, have only the Joanne fabric store to go to in one town only out in a good 38 mile radius if not a little more. I am thankful we at least have this one store to go to. If you want really crappy material go to Wal-Mart where your selection is limited to maybe 2 1/2 aisles of limited items. So indeed maybe YOU shouldn't go to Joanne's but the rest of us probably will. I know I will.
Never had a single problem with Joanne fabrics and I took lessons there before the virus started. I've been doing this for thirty years and have gotten all the yarn and fabric I needed. I like Joanne fabrics.
Very, very informative. I've always said that Joann's has a hold on the market and miss all the independent fabric stores that have gone out of business. Wished we had other choices. Thanks to your extensive list, now we do.
Thank you! 2 or 3 times BEFORE the pandemic, I had ordered items from Joann's.com took my money, said it was in stock, then a couple days later, Oops! That item isn't available! Took forever for them to refund my money! But one of my biggest gripes with them is their sales. You get your little mailer with 50 and sometimes 60% off! Yeah, good luck finding ANYTHING in that store that is not on sale, because that's one of the conditions of the % off. One time I had a coupon for $5 off my entire order, and it a well over $100. The coupon even said includes sale priced items, no doorbusters, which I didn't have anyway and the clerk refused to even give it to me! I said that's okay, and have not shopped there since. I go to Hobby Lobby or order online. Have a great day and happy sewing!😊❤
Yep and then the employees are made to follow corporate rule and just say, "sorry this company doesnt care about you, only your money. We cant use your coupon we made you think you could use."
@@taylorclark6512 Not entirely true. I was a former JoAnns employee and most of the coupons actually say in the tiny ass print how they can be used. Only most, not all the time. The problem I think JoAnns has is when an item is on sale and as a customer you don't know it. It's assumed most items in the store are regular price unless designated by a sign, but 90% of the time that's not the case. The last time I went in as a customer (after leaving) I bought something not knowing it was on sale and couldn't use a coupon. As a employee I had a device on me I could scan and find out or the register would tell us. So I understand the frustration. However I can say that when it came to items being in/out of stock, as employees it would annoy us sometimes as when I worked stocked before the pandemic, I had to bag up in store pick ups and deliveries and struggled finding items it said we had in stock as well. The problem with that was the computer system is out dated and doesn't update right away, making it both annoying for online purchases, in store purchases and employees. I can share more employee stories if interested.
Me too. However, the one local shop I tried had nothing less than 20$ yards. If local shops have less than $20 price point, I'm there but until then, I'm stuck with on line purchases.
I have worked at Joann's for a few days. I have been sewing over 50 years. However, I was put on the register with NO training at all. It was awful. I felt bad making people wait while I called someone to help me. I had no idea what I was doing. I was being polite and cheerful, but I almost had a nervous breakdown inside. I heard there was supposed to be cashier training so I asked about it. The managers don't seem to know. They just look at me, and don't answer. They have twice scheduled me on the day I am not available, on schedules coming up, and I had to tell them. And we don't get breaks, you can ask for one, but then they are unhappy. There are not enough people working, they cannot schedule more, so they don't have time for breaks. The women I have met, tho, are so very nice and helpful. So I am encouraged by that. Needless to say, I am not sure how long I will last there. The holidays are coming up and, as an older lady, I am not sure if I want to work every day of the week. Please don't blame the employees. It seems that corporate has set it up to make it incredibly difficult and stressful.
I lasted about 5-6 weeks. One of the assistant managers is a 60 year old school yard bully. She runs around, using a cart as a walker, crabbing and yelling at everyone. Even over the walkie she criticizes and yells. I had a horrible time there. Half the equipment is broken, making it very hard to do your job. I had to call her up to help me with a transaction that I could not figure out. She refused to help me and stood at another register belittling me. I waited on everyone in line, told a different manager I refused to be treated that way, and I walked out. I also want to say that I am a quilter and if I am going to do all the work of making a quilt, I want quality fabric from a quilt store. Joann's fabric is NOT the same quality at all. The quilt will not last.
You forgot Hobby Lobby, they need to really be kicked to the curb on so many levels. The local JOANNS here has looked like a post apocalyptic hell hole for the past few years, starting with huge potholes all through the parking lot, to the scantily stocked shelves in the store.
I so agree. Hobby Lobby has " fake" sales on my supplies as well. It took me awhile to catch on and probably a few hundred bucks especially when I first started making wreaths!! Thank you both for the information.
You are so right about all of this. I have been obsessed with Joann's and Amazon because I have become so used to needing instant gratification. I need to learn that waiting a few days never hurt anyone and the small businesses really need our support.
I got caught up in the trickery with the coupons from Jo-Ann's fabric store and I hate it the system is horrible and you're right about the quality of the employees there. I've called during the Christmas holiday and the excuse they gave me we were busy that's how we couldn't answer the phone I go in the store and no one is there no one 😵 she needs to hire a new tech squad on updating the website to bring people back. So much more on the internet through Google 😚. Great video by the way.
Thank you for this video! I have shopped at JoAnn's for I know over 20 years. Back when they had competition like So-Fro Fabric and Hancock Fabric. I always shopped them because I lived in an area where I could get to their store either on my way home from work or within 10 minutes from my house. About 8 years ago, I moved rural and this is when it started to sink in that they are just another monster corporation that is only interested in profits. I would drive 40+ minutes only to find out a) they didn't have what I was after, b) I google searched the item while in the store and found it other places for cheaper (even after their coupon) c) the coupon couldn't be used on most items because they were already on sale....even the magazines would be marked down 10% negating your ability to use the coupon. Their coupons make me feel like I'm in that scene from the movie "The Jerk" where you step right up and win some crap. Three years ago I started quilting and it really came to light how crappy the quality of their fabric is. I'd pull out a fat quarter from JoAnns and try to combine it into a quilt with something I had purchased at the local quilt shop. No comparison. Just this week, I was clearing out stash and uncarded about 150 fat quarters that I had purchased from JoAnns over a period of 15 years. The fat quarters from 15 years ago were somewhat acceptable from a quality standpoint. They were measured correctly and had a selvage edge. I uncarded many that I purchased about 3-4 years ago. They are printed poorly, very thin, no selvage edge and cut crooked as can be. As I was looking at them, I couldn't help but think they had been cut with scissors and then began to worry that they were being cut by children in forced labor. Whatever the case may be, this is the final straw. I will continue to buy fabric only from reputable sellers on the internet and my local quilt shop, first and foremost.
I used to love JoAnn's as well but like someone else mentioned, they send out these coupons we can use, excluding sale items, when everything in the store is supposedly on sale. Everything is overpriced! I admit the one thing they do offer that I like is their classes. My go to is hobby lobby, they may not have as much as JoAnn's does but prices are affordable and you can find majority of what you need. Don't sleep on hobby lobby, I was excited when we finally got multiple stores in my city. Thanks for the alternatives!
I would much rather shop at Joanne’s or Michael’s or anywhere else really than Hobby Lobby. They have a way worse track record than Joanne’s when it comes to human rights and equality. I refuse to shop at a store or support a company that shoves their religion into their business.
The only reason to shop there is if you are an employee with the employee discount. And it's only really worth it for Cricut. COVID caused a lot of problems on a store level. The shutdown made a lot of people bored and they decided to pick up new hobbies. The last few months, the store has been filled with amateurs who have less knowledge than the employees and cant google a basic supply list. They haven't been able to keep newly shipped sewing machines longer than a few hours. Our cotton section is wiped out. The website is not an accurate representation of the current selection. They've had to ration their fabrics, elastic and muslin. Black cotton doesnt last longer than an hour after opening. The store stayed open the whole time and had to enforce new policy. Masks were not provided to employees. Cleaner had to be bought locally. It's been a nightmare for them too. Hazard pay was $2. People on unemployment are currently making more. Please be nice to the employees. You're not the only mad person they've helped lately. They're exhausted and many are quitting due to the lack of respect felt from the company and customers. I understand that at many locations the employees are rude or not knowledgeable. Like OP said. Minimum wage means minimum effort and knowledge. This is for the comment section and not necessarily the poster. As for the current social movement, they recently made an Instagram post that came off as ambiguous and total garbage. I know for a fact that they've recently created a committee to "learn and grow" while working with Black sewists, and artists. We'll see how that develops. As for retail stores taking a stance on politics, they have to now. Politics has forced it's way into every facet of some American lives, and if anyone has had the privledge to ignore it, well it's just that, your privledge. The recent supreme court ruling banning work discrimination for being LGBTQ+ affects MANY Joanns employees. Same goes for BLM. Minimum wage jobs = lots of minorities. Thank you for this video. Buy local. Google search is your friend.
Thank you! I love this and completely agree! Small businesses have really shined during this time. I've never had trouble finding black cotton because the smaller shops have it! Same for most other supplies. And it's better quality, of course!
The employees discount is the same as what everyone els gets 20% off your total purchase so the discount sucks so dose the pay i make $8 to this job but there still open and where here to help where we can
While, I'm not gonna knock anyone for supporting small businesses and breaking away from Joann's bc small business need it more. But. Joann stores are out of cottons because of that pandemic you very much dismissed in the beginning. As someone who currently works there. You don't know what it's been like working through this pandemic and seeing how people were buying out so much of our product. And while I guess they never did a public address of the racial climate for the customers, they did send one to the stores for the employees voicing their support. Like I said, you can def get off the joann bandwagon but I just wanted to give a little insight as a current employee.
There is a lot wrong with Joann's trust me I get it, but these two things aren't the reasons to write them off. Everything else you said is accurate tho
The deck has been stacked against ALL retailers during Covid. Joann is no different. The expectations expressed here are unrealistic and reflect no knowledge of the challenges and costs associated with brick and mortar retail. Covid disrupted supply chains across the entire globe. Many associates would not return to work for fear of contracting illness and other reasons. Joann has the costs associated with maintaining a physical space and the convenience of driving to a local store -- so prices cannot compete with Etsy sellers. Where do you go and expect experts to be on the sales floor? The suggestions to shop online only will further hurt brick and mortar businesses. I hope we are all ready for never being able to walk aisles and make in-person choices the same day.
I don’t give a damn about corporations and you are the ultimate fool and hypocrite if you think they care about you… otherwise they would be paying their workers living wages +😳 I’m currently dealing with Joan switching up product no. and the prices at the register. A really illegal way to upgrade sales!! Also, I’ve been waiting since March for several refunds and they constantly ignore my e-mails and calls. If you’re okay with this level of integrity then you too are apart of the problem.
Really, really enjoyed this video, you have mentioned so many of my favorite online sources (Hawthorne! Wawak!). BTW the Kona that Joann sells is NOT the official Kona brand cotton by Robert Kaufman, it’s a cheap off brand. Likewise for their ‘Keepsake Cottons’ here in Maine which I believe was a ripoff of the wonderful quilting cottons sold my Keepsake Quilting in New Hampshire. I am very fortunate here in Maine where we have a deadstock jobber (another good source for fabric) named Marden’s. They carry name brands that are out of season, salvage, etc. I have purchased Kaffee Fassett fabrics for $4 a yard! I do a lot of commercial sewing and am always on the lookout for good sources. Also, that is for mentioning your local LQS. They are owned by your neighbors and employ local people. Maybe a couple of dollars more per yard than Joann’s but you are supporting a local shop, with local jobs.
I understand why a lot of prices have gone up, but after Covid, an average yard of fabric went from $4 to $12.99. Someone has to be padding their pockets. Probably the CEO since they feel so entitled above everyone else.
Joan are thieves. I have made returns and not had my money placed back into my account yet and this is since March. The switch up the prices & item no. at the register also. I’m new to sewing so I’m grateful that you posted this and finding it in time. I desperately don’t want to buy from Joans. Everything that you have said is 100% true. I will take your advice on where to go shop. God Bless you sis.
I had an actual nightmare experience in store yesterday. I will never shop there again. Back to my quilt shop. I will pay more, but I will never go there again.
I agree with everything u said. Poor quality "premium" quilting cotton. Overpriced and I have not been able to even place an order for home delivery. When I was actually able to get something to order online, they canceled it on me! Ive given up. I'm done with them. He wanted me to review an item that I actually did get and they refused to post my comments because it was a negative review
You are so right about Joann quilting cotton. Also spot on about employees, and salary. I also worked at Joann. Years ago Joann had excelt fabrics for garment making and little crafting supplies. Another Joann problem: Michaels and Hobby Lobby. If Joann would ditch the crafts and go back to excellent fabric for garment making. I do order on line, but I want to see and touch the fabric I buy.
i struggle with buying fabric online as its hard to tell what the color actually looks like. this is especially a problem when i’m making garments. very few shops offer samples and if they do they are usually crazy expensive. do you have any advice?
I struggle with that too. If it's a small business, you could contact them via their website and ask for their opinion. If they're running a fabric shop, odds are they're knowledgeable and passionate about sewing and want others to be also.
I understand this video is 3 years old but I wanted to give my 2 cents. It's true that when you order online and have it shipped, it doesn't arrive when they say it will and finally realize that the order got stuck at the shipping office. I also ordered some Batik jelly rolls and paid for it but never received it. I didn't realize it until it was too late. What bothers me now is that they don't advertise the 4-big pattern company sales on their store flyer. Just yesterday I went in to pick up an order and saw that their Butterick and Vogue patterns were on sale. I was so frustrated because I didn't have my wish list and didn't have time to look at their books. I will, however, continue to shop there because I want to feel the fabrics. I don't buy quilt fabric anymore because they are so thin and not worth putting in a quilt. The employees are nice and courteous but not that knowledgeable about sewing or quilting. I have noticed there is less employees now and it's frustrating when I need to have fabric cut and long lines at the checkout.
I have been quilting for 15 years. You are right. I am lucky to have a few quilt shops in my area. I bought plaid fabric from Joann's one time and the girl at the cutting counter didn't cut it along the lines, so I had to cut off a large piece that I couldn't even use! You are not far from me! I'm in Tampa. I have gone to Fabric Smart a couple times. Love that place!
Thank you for your information. My daughter worked there briefly in college because it was right down the street and she hated it there. Absolutely the worst paying job. Her manager was a good worker but very mean and snarky to all the employees. So true that they limit the employees IF they can't find employees. I have subbed to your channel and hope to learn about sewing. I am 62 and will be needing some crafts to fill my time when I eventually retire. . Looking forward to watching your videos and learning.
Not all JoAnn's is like what you are describing. At Mine, the ladies are super nice! They take coupons from others and you can use their coupon several times a day. Hobby Lobby sure won't do that. I do not quilt. I sew apparel. I like to touch the fabric not guess what it may be like.
I worked at a Joann's from 1996 to July of 2004. I do sew quite a lot, so I was able to help people. But we weren't allowed to help anyone for more than a few minutes because we had to do the job we were hired for. And that did not include helping customers. I don't remember what my pay was, but it was extremely LOW. The only time I got more than 40 hours was during inventory and the Christmas season. In the 8 years I worked there, we had 7 managers! The rules changed weekly and if you did not keep up with them, you were written up or spoken to loudly on the selling floor in front of customers. There was a LOT of theft going on involving the managers and other key holders. And there was also a ton of waste. When new patterns came in, the old ones could have been donated to schools, but they were not. They were put into garbage bags and thrown into the dumpster behind the store. Also thrown into that dumpster were damaged items. Many of those items could be repaired easily. I loved working nights because after the store closed, the key holder and I would drive around to the back of the store to do a bit of dumpster diving. We got patterns we wanted and other items all for free. This ended after about 2 years because corporate put locks on the dumpster! They were throwing all those things away, but they felt the need to prevent anyone from stealing their garbage! In March of 2004, my hours had been cut down to 2 hours per week. They wanted me to quit, but I refused to do it. I requested and was granted a private meeting between me, the manager of the store and our district manager. To protect myself, I actually had a digital recorder tucked into my bra, with the microphone wire going down my sleeve. I did this so I could record the entire meeting. I'm glad I did that because it helped me to get back up to 25 hours per week. And back to not knowing the rules. The last manager I had realized that I was not following one of the NEW rules, so she started to YELL at me on the selling floor. We had told her many times not to do this because it was so unprofessional. In a very quiet, but firm voice, I started to speak to her. She refused to stop screaming at me, so in that same firm voice but a bit louder than before, I told her she could stick this job where the sun don't shine because I QUIT! She told me I can't quit NOW because I just started for the evening shift less than one hour ago! I told her oh yes, I am quitting NOW, just watch me! And I walked up to the cutting counter to get the keys to the break room. My one friend there smiled and handed me the keys. As I walked across the store to the break room, MY customers were clapping! I gather up my things and walked out with the apron still on. The only reason I went back was to collect my last paycheck, which the manager threatened to withhold. I told her if she did that, my lawyer would be calling her. And I never returned that apron! I only shop at REAL quilt shops now. And most of the people who work at the quilt shops say that Joann's is nothing but a big box store that sells terrible fabric. They are correct.
Wow, I wish I was there to see you quit! That's great that you stood your ground. Nobody should treat another person like that who is just trying to do their job.
@@NikkiVelazquez do you have an opinion on thread from Thread Art? They have a beautiful, affordable collection with good reviews from several people, but you seem to really know your stuff so thought I'd ask you :)
I was pretty upset when I put an order in and it took over a month. Their prices have gone up so muuch I don't even go there unless I really really have to.
Nikki Velazquez I enjoyed and agree with your video... now I gotta find the links.. I am not a fan of Joanne’s either, much of their fabric is overpriced for the quality, I mostly go there for notions and Pattern sales
So sorry to hear that. I have been going to Joanna for many years now. We have no other option. However, I do feel staff is impolite to rude to non-cooperative or complaint loudly about something in store while customers are around which gives signs they are not happy. Only few ladies I have seen are nice and I always hope I will see them rather than some young boys or girls.
I agree with the quality issue. Their quilting cotton is really terrible. Loud obnoxious prints, rough and thin weaves and just cheap looking and feeling -- And they charge the same price as my local quilt shop that has WAY better quality.
OMG. I can't agree with you more in regards to everything that is so wrong with Joann's. I have had rudeness by the workers on so many occasions and I have actually called them out on it right in the store because it is sickening. Most crafters that I know in Joanns are just happy but then this rudeness; really.....I am going to as of today TRY really hard to stop using all East Coast Joann's in RI and MA. Mostly because of their customer service but also because of their poor fabric choices and their inability to answer sewing questions from simple to how a machine that they sell functions. They don't even know how to cut faux fur. They are not very knowledgeable in regards to sewing. Very bad selection. So, my alternative is a fabric consignment shop. Thank you for this video. I wish I could open up a fabric shop in my area just don't know where to begin.
Some areas have no choice but to shop places like JoAnns and HL. Quilt shops are few and far between in my area. I also, have issues ordering offline from quilt stores on etsy and other sites. I need to feel and see the fabric. So you do you and I will do me.
I've been to my local Joann store only twice. Both times the two employees working the joint were rude and knew NOTHING about the supplies I needed. I will never go back.
@@NikkiVelazquez How would you expect an employee to know about all the crafts? They are not teachers. They are hired to ring you up, and put things away. The store does not teach employees how to do the each individual craft! To me, that is completely unreasonable.
Yes, it true. They pay their employees $1 above federal minimum wage with no benefit and they hire part time employees. For some people who can not afford higher quality higher price. Wal-Mart is mostly for people with lower incomes. It just a fact of living. The coupons are to get customers hook and coming back. Hobby lobby is less expensive.
I'm not surprised they haven't made a statement about the recent protests/issues. And in my opinion, it would just seem disingenuous for them to make a statement about it considering the fact that they really don't even care about their own employees or customers.
Going through this right now with Jo ann: double charged for a pickup order that I got an error: payment didn't go through message. So I'm getting NOTHING but was charged twice. There are thieves working for them. They do this regularly. When I called to try to resolve the issue a man was slurring his words and eventually sat the phone down and stopped responding to me.
I get your point, but all others have all been using a copy and paste response to what is going on , I have yet to come across anyone who seems to be using their own words regarding racism issue. Seems no one knows how to think and speak for themselves. FYI Joann’s is not the only store who under pays and is under staffed.
I added my story on being discriminated against inside a JOANN store and their petty reply on racism. I've noticed the vast majority of commenters didn't reply on what Nikki said about JOANN and their stance against racism; and right in their on house I a defenseless BLACK WOMAN was discriminated against!
I’ll be interested to see how the “new” job market here in NH plays out, for numerous stores. Walmart is offering $14-18, and whole foods is coming in to the area with the same rate. We a 2.5% unemployment rate, and there’s loads of “Now Hiring “ signs all over the place. Something’s gotta give!
I went to Joann’s today and that was the worst store on earth. Things that you can find in Michael’s you would think would be in Joann’s “ NOT” this store does not have “Die Cuts”, clear stamps that have die cut’s with them, very few rubber Stamps or the stamp pads. NO help from the store’s sales staff, not a person in sight but when you go to the check out counter the first thing out of their mouth is “ did you find everything you wanted” HELL NO! Never will I go to Joann’s…
I stopped shopping at my Joann's because they don't offer restrooms to the public! Wth? No restrooms for customers? The employees were so rude about it. Crazy. I shop elsewhere now. Thanks for on line tips.
@@susancook1448 every JoAnn's I've ever shopped at in Arizona, and in Michigan always let customers use the restrooms, but not this one. It's in Owosso Michigan. I have not been back there.
@susancook1448 oh I have. The manager is the worst. I even complained to corporate but heard nothing back. It's OK, there is another JoAnns 25 miles away, bigger and better and a lot friendlier!
Well, that’s not nice! If you don’t like them then just don’t go. I have been shopping there for many years. Screwed? No I don’t think so! We have a choice if we want to buy something or not it’s our Choice. I’m just wondering who did you wrong that you’re so angry!? Well regardless have yourself a great day, I’m on my way to Joanne‘s
When they send coupons for 50% off , SALE items never apply, and literally everything in the store suddenly gets plastered with red sale tags. They always make sure to put the desirable high dollar items at bad sale prices( when they were already severely over priced) so that you can't use your coupon. I don't know how this alone doesn't aggravate people enough to stop shopping there.
Funny I just saw this video because I remember many years ago, before we had Michaels or Hobby in my area (I’m in central Florida by the way), there was always this kind of “granny southern confederacy” vibe that I got when I visited the store, I don’t know how else to describe it but I never vibed with the store at that time mainly because of that, and we’re talking about when I was very young as I’ve always been into sewing. Since then the store chains have definitely grown more diverse, fashion forward and trendy in their selection of merchandise, but that first impression always stuck with me and I wouldn’t say that I go there that often probably because of that and Joann’s can be quite expensive too, I’d say I only go to Joann’s if I’m looking for specific fabrics or materials that I can’t find at my local Michaels, Hobby Lobby or Walmart.
A lot of hateful comments and I’m sorry for that. Something I’ve learned recently: When they can’t control their emotions they try to control your behavior. Whenever I have an emotional reaction to something I have meaningful conversations with myself to figure out if it’s valid. I have learned to let a lot of things go, but I have also learned that many people are ugly and unkind and they cannot be helped. It costs someone nothing to click another video, or perhaps unsubscribe! I understand the point of your video: we work too hard for our money to throw it at companies who give us cheap products then pay their employees badly to boot. Once again I am disheartened by the mean comments but I hope you continue to make your videos. Just because I don’t agree with you doesn’t mean your points are invalid! For the record, I support you!
Thank you; I appreciate that! You are totally right. I've chosen to laugh at the angry comments and treat them as entertainment. They're actually helping me by telling the RUclips algorithm that it should recommend my video to other users.
I don't see "hateful" comments. I see some disagreement. But I haven't see any name calling, cursing, insults... Just people giving their thoughts that may or may not be the same as yours 🙂 Thank you for the online links. I can't wait to check them out 👍🏼 BTW, this not not meant to be a "hateful comment" 😉 ** I'm totally shopping Wawak for thread now! Thanks 😁 **
I am so glad I am not the only one that knows this....THEY OVERPRICE EVERYTHING, and I do mean EVERYTHING. I am trying to find a reliable and quality fabrics online.
I don’t do quilting I mostly go to Joannes for like other things like my dad does pottery I’ll do friendship, bracelets, jewelry, like memory wire jewelry, just as a hobby to deal with my mental health if I do get fabric with my mom, it’s mostly to make a birthday banner or she does it for a tablecloth my dad uses stencils for pottery
I LOVE Joanns. I've never had trouble with them...if I did- they made it right or helped me. They have an 800 number for a reason. Their selection is great! Their coupons are great. Their new yarns are good! Why would I dump Joann's ?? They are right down the street and I can go and look and touch and see! Can't touch yarn on the internet. And returns are costly and a pain in the neck! Besides - you're probably going to be selling stuff RIGHT after this video! Which is probably what this is all about.
It’s the same business model of many, if not most of the large chain stores. As for taking a definite stand on political issues ... that can spell death for a business, no matter what stand they take. I have a small business, and I have not made a public announcement concerning politics ... and it IS about politics at this point.
I did not know that Joann’s does not offer restrooms. When I shop there again I will BE SURE to go to the bathroom at home. What is the reason for no restrooms?
I went to my local Joann's store and asked the woman in the fabric section if they had any chambray. She didn't know what chambray was, she said "Is it like chenille?" I said no it's a shirting fabric. She called her manager and several other people in the store. None of them knew what chambray was. I haven't been back since then.
Thanks for leading me to this video. I am a newbie sewer and I can already tell that Joann's has poor quality fabric! I am in Orlando... so it was nice to hear about some shops in the state! I can't wait to dive in and explore your suggestions!
When I first started was March 2020 and immediately was put into doing online orders we had 3,500 orders for a good month we would get 200 orders done a day and it would be back up the next day glad that’s over
I own my, own business since the pandemic I have no problem getting what I need and if they send the wrong thing I get to keep it and they send what I should have.
Let’s not even mention the fact of the machine crafty machines like cricket and brothers can cut machines I seen them sell at Joannes and they are so expensive. They are like almost $400 pricewise and then they have different sewing machines which I’m like that’s cool they do have kids likes you no stocking kits, sewing kits they have. A lot of variety for sewers for painters for Allied different artists, but the prices that they set for their inventory is just outrageous and the way they treat their employees is awful. Every time I go to Joannes I always tell the employees that they’re doing a great job. thank you for your hard work during the pandemic. I hope you get justice for you guys cause you deserve health benefits.
New subscriber. Love this video and you are right Joann’s is garbage. I noticed awhile back that they did not put out a statement about the social injustice and was a little bother by it. But I thought i was being sensitive. Glad you saw it too. Thank you.
I was a manager in training at Hancock and they paid a smidge over minimum (I don't remember exactly, it was 20 odd years ago) and I was required to work 50 hours every week. Exhausting and depressing.
I did notice that Joanns I cnt use my coupons, However I do shop @ Joanns & other Fabric Stores, !!!!! I will continue 2 shop & Joanns & other Fabric Stores, All my sewing & DIY products that I did get from Joanns I had no problems!!!!!!
I am a long time and loyal customer of JoAnn until...they instituted a recent (2022) $1.95 non-refundable handling fee on all orders. This means even if you buy higher quantities which qualifies for Free Shipping, you're still charged a ridiculous $1.95. Like many customers and as an obsessed crafter, I've spent thousands of dollars over the years with this company only to be disrespected with a handling fee. It's not the amount, it's the principle. I will not shop online with them anymore.
There is a contest called fab shop hop i think thats the name. Its about 100 quilt shops. You visit their website n look for a bunny. Mh point is, you can see all the quality fabrics each shop sells n you can buy from them. Most have sales n clearances too. Far better quality. Joanns fabrics are mostly made in Pakistan. Have to pick n choose carefully but feels cheap compared to these fabric shops in the shop hop
I ordered 40 yards of drapery fabric...and was sent 12 small cuts that were mostly unusable...during the early days of COVID, I tried to order fabric in large quantities for face masks, they took the order and my money and only delivered a small amount of what I ordered. I ended up sourcing what I needed from Keepsake Quilting...they were excellent and their price on Kona solids was great.
The Joann's here completely gave up and stopped opening the store! The online ordering, according to them wasn't even getting processed because they didn't have enough employees to run the store let alone unload trucks & putaway stock! I gave up on them and order online now.
@@NikkiVelazquez when coronavirus was really at its highest point I think employees probably just quit. They were really shorthanded and just limping along trying to keep the store open with only 4 employees for the entire day.
So I’m a sucker for transparency. As I went through their website it was giving box store/over priced with enticing price cuts like amazon. So I figured “let’s RUclips an honest review” and I have learned and received so much more, thanks to you. The list you’ve provided will come in very handy. Thank you, thank you, thank you three times and many more. That would have been my first purchase but now I can say “I’ve never...”
I wish I looked them up before I ordered. My card was charged FOUR TIMES when I have only ordered from them TWICE. Two are the correct amount and then I got charged again for a completely different amount. I’m trying to get in contact but they only have an email, I can’t find their phone number.
Definitely agree Joanns has been very disappointing. When they kept canceling all my orders in may I kind of gave up. The lack of comment for the situation going on now is just 1 more reason to move one. I have lots of luck buying on Etsy and since most of the shops are small the shipping is cheap and fast!!
Her complaints make me want to shop there more often
When I go to the quilt shops they are snobby and make me feel like I don't belong
I feel that this event was monumental enough to warrant a statement, especially when it affects a large portion of their customer base.
Our local quilt shop is $12.95-$15.00 a yard. I can't always justify that, but use them when I can. JoAnn's fills a necessary gap in our area, carrying things the local shop doesn't.
Fair enough.
I have no problem with Joann.
Great!
She is 100% correct about the quality of JoAnn's cottons. Really bad. I just recently made an online purchase from Sauders Fabric. I could not believe the difference. Beautiful, soft, brilliant colors and a much heavier weight.
The difference is huge! So much softer!
Not only that, the fabric is now an inch less in width…😉
I'm totally with you on this. My JoAnn store has hired a fresh set of employees who know nothing about knitting, crochet, quilting, or needle felting. It's a complete 180 from the amazing crafting community/family I felt when I used to go there. Such a shame. I only buy there if I have no other choice. For fabric I go to fabric.com, knitpicks, WEBS, or paradise fibers for my wool needs. Sorry for the long comment.
Thank you for the comment! I'll have to check out those shops if they're online. I've ordered from fabric.com a lot in the past.
Yes! And a lot of their housewares are in direct competition with the makers they pretend to support.
I have to agree
Wait a week!! It won't be on sale and you'll get another coupon!
Thanks for your input! I hope you all continue to enjoy working there and providing a great experience for your customers.
The ladies at my local Joanns are WONDERFUL!
Where are you?
Agree to disagree, I guess!
There are no other shops in Indianapolis that carry a full line of products!
I really appreciate that you actually offer some good alternatives rather than just recommend people look for them. Yes, people should look, but a head start is very appreciated!
I'm glad you found them useful!
This!!! This is the right way to call out a big company. So many people say "don't shop at x,y and z" but never give any reasons or alternatives. Thank you for all the links too! (bonus points for the dig at amazon) As someone new to sewing this is EXTREMELY helpful
Thank you! I'm so glad you found my video helpful!
Yep, buy local. I miss Hancock fabrics, too.
Me too!
Never had a single problem with Joanne fabrics and I took lessons there before the virus started. I've been doing this for thirty years and have gotten all the yarn and fabric I needed. I like Joanne fabrics.
Thanks for sharing!
Very, very informative. I've always said that Joann's has a hold on the market and miss all the independent fabric stores that have gone out of business. Wished we had other choices. Thanks to your extensive list, now we do.
You are so welcome! Glad it was helpful.
I find all the sales and coupons a sick game. It's all psychological. They're tricking these people into thinking they're getting a good deal.
I totally agree with supporting small businesses!
Thanks!
Hobby Lobby isn't my favorite either.
I so agree. Hobby Lobby has " fake" sales on my supplies as well.
It took me awhile to catch on and probably a few hundred bucks especially when I first started making wreaths!!
Thank you both for the information.
@@NikkiVelazquez They're actually worse than Joann's. They're known as the worst employer in Oklahoma.
@@hollydaugherty2620 That's horrible. You would think that their religious values would dictate that they treat their employees well.
You have a personal issue. I have not had problems with this store. I am a seasoned crafter.
You are so right about all of this. I have been obsessed with Joann's and Amazon because I have become so used to needing instant gratification. I need to learn that waiting a few days never hurt anyone and the small businesses really need our support.
They really do! And if you can find a local shop, the shipping can be just as quick!
I love my JOANN store. They are friendly and helpful. No business is perfect.
I'm glad your experience has been good.
What state is your Joann's located? Evidentally they have a good supervisor or manager.
Thanks for watching! I'm not a fan of the coupons and constant sales. Just lower the prices... Don't turn it into a sick game for customers!
I agree completely! Quality is not something they care about.
Thank you for telling the truth.
I shopped at Hobby Lobby until recently. How they handled the pandemic closure and treated their staff was the final nail in the coffin for me.
I think this all craft stores tbh
@@sylvislellis77 Yes, that bothers me too, about the religion stuff. Also, Hobby Lobby fabric is crap.
I haven't had any of those problems, and will continue to purchase what I need.
Glad to hear it. And now you have some alternatives online.
Me too..
What do you sew? Iv had more than the ones she listed. Also you could support a local small business?! Isn’t that important yess. Also saving money?
The employees discount is the same as what everyone els gets 20% off your total purchase so the discount sucks so dose the pay i make $8 to this job but there still open and where here to help where we can
@@falishadelavega9984 20%? We get 30%
While, I'm not gonna knock anyone for supporting small businesses and breaking away from Joann's bc small business need it more.
Thanks for your comment!
If Joann's is the only option, I won't be sad to see them go and will continue to shop online.
I don’t give a damn about corporations and you are the ultimate fool and hypocrite if you think they care about you… otherwise they would be paying their workers living wages +😳
I’m currently dealing with Joan switching up product no. and the prices at the register.
Thanks for the info about their Kona cotton! That's shady! It sounds like you have a lot of great fabric sources in your area!
Wow! That's so unethical! They know people use those reviews to make purchasing decisions!
i really appreciated this video and all the supplier options, thank you!!!
Glad it was helpful!
I think that the people in charge don't actually understand the customer.
i struggle with buying fabric online as its hard to tell what the color actually looks like. this is especially a problem when i’m making garments. very few shops offer samples and if they do they are usually crazy expensive. do you have any advice?
I struggle with that too. If it's a small business, you could contact them via their website and ask for their opinion. If they're running a fabric shop, odds are they're knowledgeable and passionate about sewing and want others to be also.
Thank you, I'm new to sewing and Joanns has been a complete nightmare
I hope the alternatives I've listed in the comments and mentioned in the video are useful to you!
Thanks for your comment!
I love Fabric Smart too! Really nice lady who owns it. Thanks for stopping by!
Thank you for your nice comment! I try to post sewing videos whenever I can.
Not all JoAnn's is like what you are describing. At Mine, the ladies are super nice! They take coupons from others and you can use their coupon several times a day. Hobby Lobby sure won't do that. I do not quilt. I sew apparel. I like to touch the fabric not guess what it may be like.
Yes, it's hard to buy apparel fabric online.

Very helpful, thanks for sharing. I'm new to sewing, just bought a new machine, so the info on good thread is especially valuable to me.
Glad it was helpful!
@@NikkiVelazquez do you have an opinion on thread from Thread Art? They have a beautiful, affordable collection with good reviews from several people, but you seem to really know your stuff so thought I'd ask you :)
I've never used it, but I've heard good things. I use Madeira for embroidery and Gutermann for sewing.
I was pretty upset when I put an order in and it took over a month. Their prices have gone up so muuch I don't even go there unless I really really have to.
That's terrible! And I'm sure they didn't communicate about the delay, either.
I'm so eager to explore these links. I live in a fabric desert.
Enjoy!
Nikki Velazquez I enjoyed and agree with your video... now I gotta find the links.. I am not a fan of Joanne’s either, much of their fabric is overpriced for the quality, I mostly go there for notions and Pattern sales
@@sheilamitchell8980 The links are in the description. They can be tricky to find if you're on on mobile device. Glad you enjoyed the video!
Unfortunately, that's been my experience as well.
I just buy my fabric online now.
Sadly uncommon. And it's not as though their products are cheap enough to justify the lack of knowledgeable employees!
@@NikkiVelazquez How would you expect an employee to know about all the crafts? They are not teachers. They are hired to ring you up, and put things away. The store does not teach employees how to do the each individual craft! To me, that is completely unreasonable.
@@petmomful2260 if they paid more, they'd attract employees who knew the crafts.
Very good point!
READ THE BLACK LADY'S STORY IN THE COMMENT SECTION WHO WAS DISCRIMINATED AGAINST INSIDE A JOANN STORE!!!!!! (VERY REPULSIVE)!
Absolutely! Most retail is like that. And that's why I provided some alternatives here.
I added my story on being discriminated against inside a JOANN store and their petty reply on racism. I've noticed the vast majority of commenters didn't reply on what Nikki said about JOANN and their stance against racism; and right in their on house I a defenseless BLACK WOMAN was discriminated against!
I gave this a thumbs up. Normally I do not bother watching anything that has 10% thumbs down. Good job. Thanks. I learned a lot.
Glad it was helpful! Lots of Karens were angry that I brought up a topic they don't like.
What alternative do you suggest? Is there another store that offers the same?
I mentioned some options in the video
I’ll be interested to see how the “new” job market here in NH plays out, for numerous stores. Walmart is offering $14-18, and whole foods is coming in to the area with the same rate. We a 2.5% unemployment rate, and there’s loads of “Now Hiring “ signs all over the place. Something’s gotta give!
You lost me with “We need too”.
*to
I went to Joann’s today and that was the worst store on earth.
Where is this? Mine certainly does! The colitis and Crohns foundation would take exception

@@Prettynickle nor should anyone. Someone should bring this up to the management.
@susancook1448 oh I have. The manager is the worst. I even complained to corporate but heard nothing back. It's OK, there is another JoAnns 25 miles away, bigger and better and a lot friendlier!
Not at my Joann's
I noticed that as well. It's a game that I got tired of playing.
Th they sell the exact same fabrics that I found at Walmart I was going to post pictures but it won't let me!! This is so true!!!!
I can definitely see how you got that impression. And yes, they are overpriced for what they are. Thanks for stopping by!
Thank you!

That is so sad! I'm sure she had her phone in her pocket... she could have googled it and seen what chambray is!

I'm so glad I could help!
Ive heard Florida has the absolute worst joanns compared to the rest of the country 😂
When I first started was March 2020 and immediately was put into doing online orders we had 3,500 orders for a good month we would get 200 orders done a day and it would be back up the next day glad that’s over
Yuck!
I own my, own business since the pandemic I have no problem getting what I need and if they send the wrong thing I get to keep it and they send what I should have.
I'm glad it's working out for you.

I was a manager in training at Hancock and they paid a smidge over minimum (I don't remember exactly, it was 20 odd years ago) and I was required to work 50 hours every week. Exhausting and depressing.
And they wonder why they went out of business!
Joann makes all kinds of money, but every fellow employee I've ever met also makes Jack Shit
I was never going steady with them in the first place, so no need to break up.

Ugh! Why would they think it's ok to give you all those small pieces?
The Joann's here completely gave up and stopped opening the store! The online ordering, according to them wasn't even getting processed because they didn't have enough employees to run the store let alone unload trucks & putaway stock! I gave up on them and order online now.
My local joann's was getting 150 ot more online orders a day so give them some slack.
And they'd never give the stores funds to hire temporary workers like they do during Christmas!
@@GreySkaler I did give them slack. I took my business elsewhere.
