I'm very happy to see the eye and respiratory protection. I don't think it's overkill, honestly, if I ever keep any hair kickers, they're going in a room with negative pressure and an air filter.
So long as you show respect and take your time most wont kick urticating hairs at you, they tend to do it on webbing and if they feel threatened. Can get some new worlds that dont have urticating hairs/ wont kick such as avicularia and ex avicularia species, they possess urticating hairs but dont kick, the do rub their abdomen on things so the urticating hairs can get on you from that but avics then to use a different defence and that is to face their bum at you and shoot poo at you 🤣🤣. But going back to hair kicking you should see my large female Acanthoscurria. geniculata her abdomen is perfect and full of her hairs even though her species is very prone to kicking hairs. Not sure how many of Kats videos you have checked out but she has a lot of very good videos with good info, also if you are thinking of getting T's then would also be good to check out tarantula collective (Richard) and Dave's little beasties (Dave Fisher) both of them have over 20 years each of experience and the amount of knowledge I have learnt from them about husbandry and care is unreal. How you have a good easter weekend 😊
As someone who is both a biologist and a bit of an arachnophobe, seeing how huge Zelda new fangs were after molting was both horrifying and fascinating to watch. Also this is the first video i've seen of yours and I already learned a bunch of cool new info so thank you!
You took the right precautions, the fine hairs are bound to move along with any kind of shift in the air atall. Zelda is looking so nice congrats on a super early molt too 😂 I was expecting atleast a year or so before you got a molt from her
I wanted to say thank you Kat, I was very afraid of spiders few years back but following you and whatching your videos inspired me to get over my fears and half a year ago I bought a jumping spider and I got my first tarantula (brachypelma hamorii) just yesterday. I finally don't fear spiders anymore! Hugs from Finland! ❤️
Me too! First a regal jumper, now i also own a brazilian black sling😅 i have been watching Kat's channel for many many years, and I am also from Finland💜
Well done, Zelda 💖 and I’m wearing all longsleeve/legs, gloves, mask and the protection glasses too, when doing something around my T. stirmis enclosure or taking out a molt. The hairs are just insane.
I love videos like this. On a different note, you'd think they'd be able to come up with a "soft" or "quiet" open/close enclosures so spooders and other crawlies wouldn't get spooked when they're opened.
As someone who is over a month into still fighting symptoms of exposure to stirmi hair on one of my hands (not mine, I worked at a local pet store) I wish I knew the full extent of how bad their hairs were before I went to rehouse the very defensive girl into her much needed enclosure change (to a more proper setup). I already should have been more careful because I know that I have more sensitive skin than most. Getting point blank exposure from the substrate is torturously itchy... I have prescription strength steroid ointment but the damage from scratching caused my skin to dry out and flake while it's still having small blisters too. I never had a strong inclination to get a bird eater in the past but now I DEFINITELY don't want one for myself!
I’ve had chronic hives since August 2020. I definitely support the “do anything to avoid further hives” effort-full body hives are a misery I would not wish on anyone.
This was so awesome! Loved watching the time lapse. She’s beautiful. Big and Chonky 😂 glad you took the necessary steps to protect yourself. I’m getting my first 3 slings tomorrow and I’m so excited to watch them grow 😍
Love waking up to a new Kat video. Definitely not overkill at all. We are so lucky in Australia that our tarantulas don't have hair that bad. I had two of my babies molt just recently also and we are going into Autumn so maybe it was something worldwide........
Y’all are actually unlucky as you can’t get exotic species, unlike us we can have stuff from all over the world,I used to want to live in Australia, but the insane amount of regulations regarding pets, put me off.
That was super neat. I've heard Richard Stewart say they can flick hairs into their bedding before molting. She's so pretty with her stripes and all. Thank you so much for posting this wonderful video. I love your molt bin too!
WOW! That molt mat was honestly amazing, I get most of my tarantula knowledge from you and Tarantula Collective so I’ve never seen one molt in person, I didn’t know anything about molt mats until this video, the one Zelda made was incredible!! It almost looks like saw dust, that’s such an incredible evolutionary adaptation to protect themselves from biting insects and predators while they’re molting!!! I can’t even imagine what one of those hairs would feel like at ant-scale if they’re able to irritate us as massive creatures, I picture it being like that “fight in the shade” scene from 300 😂😂😂😂😂 just arrows shooting everywhere
I swear, once one molts they ALL molt lol. I’ve been able to time lapse my largest one everytime she molts. But I can imagine having as many as you do, it’s tough to catch. I’m so afraid to hurt their fangs, I wait 3 weeks and than only give them gummy worms lol! For some reason, whenever this particular one molts, they come out looking like a spider just sitting there, so I scare people with her molts all the time 😂
I never knew, until watching your videos, that spiders moult! I love your enthusiasm for tarantulas and other spiders, it’s actually been really fascinating 😊
After opening Nhandu and Lasiodora I'm sticking to old worlds now, they really have my respect tho, if I was a wild animal that was starving and there was Theraphosa walking everywhere id keep looking for something else to eat.
Fantastic update Kat, here in the UK the past week has also seen a pickup in molts, I've had 3 and others have reported similar. I managed to capture my Phormictopus atrichomatus (grown on sling) in the act too.
My T-stirmi just molted too and I think you were smart suiting up. I too suit up when I mess with my hair kicking critters because I break out also. The only thing I know of that worse than their hair would be porcupine quills!!
Kat! 🤭 Oh, the drama gods are PROUD!! The only time I've noticed any itchiness with my big girl (8" DLS) was during enclosure cleaning/rearranging. It was similar to fiberglass, but not nearly as bad. Keep up the good job!
Richard made an entire video of what you should wear when dealing with hair kickers. You did very good in preparation to deal with them. My little one kicks hair at me all the time. Usually just causes itching on my finger but it goes away once I wash my hands
I do the same with all 3 of my Theraphosa's. Fully packed. My Apophysis female likes kicking hairs at me. My male Blondi and female stermi are realy chill, so cant say about those 2. But my Apophysis gave my a full blast on my arms a year ago, ever since i always go fully packed with a full face mask and gloves with those 3. Those hairs aint no joke.
AWESOME molt footage. And that's absolutely not overkill, if/when I get a G. pulchra I'm going to be wearing gloves and goggles and a mask doing anything inside their enclosure and I think their hairs are like, tier 1 or something. Don't wanna risk it, can't be too prepared. Also I literally have those gloves 😭😂 s/o from MO
I’ve been super excited to see this video! I still can’t believe how much hair was around her. Definitely something to consider when getting this species. 🥰
Hey Sweetie, I'm from Gloucester UK and I'm quite phobic of our native spiders, mostly because of their speed but also Having been bitten several times! including a wolf spider bite I got in Germany that caused me to buy a skirt to travel home in as my hip leg and groin had swollen to the point I couldn't put my trousers on!! However I am fascinated by tarantulas, and had the chance to handle a Mexican red knee when I was younger. I really love your videos and I find you very helpful and informative to watch. Sorry if I've turned up to your channel a bit late but I'm truly happy I've found you! Keep up the wonderful work you have an amazing and beautiful collection of critters ✌🖤🕷
Great video and stunning spider, I love Theraposas species, got a blondi soon, a sling its on its way and have two apophysis at home since a year, they really love to eat, eating monsters, and just beautiful spiders, love you channel, happy easter!
It was so cool to see a spider molt!!! I’ve never seen it before, especially a tarantula. For Zelda’s future molts I would sweep and swiffer right after if you didn’t as well, just since the lid and the mister probably kick around her hairs as well
I’m very happy that you’re alright, safe and sound and weren’t allergic to your spider baby Zelda at all whatsoever so yay. Ps your baby Zelda and all of your other babies were so cute 😁
I'm relatively new to the tarantula hobby, only keeping Ts for 20 years, but I'm pretty sure you can feed it without a level 4 hazmat suit. This is hilarious.
I really don’t know why my comment is not under here! For the first time I was able to watch your video in time (11 pm here) and I was soooo happy!!! Your videos are really the best things I can see on internet and on tv. Here in Europe today we all struggle for the images comes from Ukraine. Dead people leave in the middle of the street or throw in mass graves. I’ve been cried all my tears and your video was so important this time I cannot explain how much in words! God bless you Kat and family I really love you honey bee ❤️❤️❤️❤️
I live on the Oregon Coast, and we see a LOT of spiders in the fall. I had to make peace with them 😃 my first love was the orchid spider. I don’t keep them, just enjoy them outside. Your videos are fascinating and fun, I quite enjoy them. Thanks
My Nhandu Chromatus did the hair carpet too this past molt! Before that her butt looked like it was covered in a thick powder and I could see them flying everywhere. It was bizzare! This was the first time I ever saw something like that, so I thought there was something wrong with her. But after her molt she was good as new. But there were hairs all over her enclosure. I too protected myself and sprayed inside her enclosure before taking her molt out. Can't be too careful!!! Loved your video btw! 🧡🥰🖤
I always feel so bad for the poor worms 😆Spiders scare the heck out of me but for some reason I really enjoy your videos, though I have to cover the screen during feeding time!
Thank you Kat for showing me not all spiders are scary I’ve had arachnophobia for so long and I just finally got around to not screaming at the sight of a house spider❤
When you put down the water bowl. you probably got something on you. Those spikes they shoot out. You scratched your leg, without thinking💚 I just started following your channel here🙂
I still remember when I had to rehouse my lasiodora parahybana when it was smaller. It kicked so many hairs at me my face was on fire. Haha. The “over kill” is actually a great precaution. 👌🏼😂

OMG! The pulchripes molt! I can’t wait til mine gets its colors! Were you wearing shorts? I wonder if they kind of floated into the air and than as they dropped, they landed on your leg? 🤔
My a chalcodes is SOOOOO scared of her sliding top lol my a Seemanni could care less. The baby g Pulchra runs for life anytime a piece of dust crosses a mile from its enclosure 😂 I LOVED this video! I want a theraphosa so badly but really wanna wait until I know I have the ability to care for it properly. Please just make Videos every day, I get bored 😂🤍
It's possible the misting may have kicked up some hairs, as it's sprayed with air. I use a garden sprayer (like Dave's Little Beasties); it allows me to keep my T.Stirmi's and T. apophysis's enclourses moist while they are out and about in the enclosures ( keep the nozzle as close to the substrate as possible). If they are inside their hides I use a basic plant waterer to "make it rain" as Tom Moran says. If they are out and about the 'rain' terrifies them.

when Zelda initially turned around for the worm, you can just realize and marvel about how big she is because wow queen
I’m deeply terrified of all things that crawl but I loooooove your channel! I swear it’s making me less afraid.
I watched Lucas the spider and have fallen in love with jumping spiders 😍 ... I could never do anything bigger haha
@@Chrriekay907 I’m thinking of getting one too!!
FRRRR I just found her channel and it’s amazing
I too am terrified of babies

Lol, that's the same way I went. First I was afraid, then I got a jumping spider 8 months ago and now I have a b. Smithi since a few weeks ago

you don't take adhd stimulants right? I had to stop them because I got chronic hives as well.. and it got really bad up my back
@@20PINKluvr Nope! Mine's a fun consequence called post-infection sequelae. TLDR, my immune system got mad I made it work a lot, so now it hates me.
This was so awesome! Loved watching the time lapse. She’s beautiful. Big and Chonky 😂 glad you took the necessary steps to protect yourself. I’m getting my first 3 slings tomorrow and I’m so excited to watch them grow 😍
Kat: "Insert video... here!"

That was super neat. I've heard Richard Stewart say they can flick hairs into their bedding before molting. She's so pretty with her stripes and all. Thank you so much for posting this wonderful video. I love your molt bin too!

Petko and tarantula kat in the same night, awesome 👌

Nice job catching her molting, never get tired of watching videos of tarantulas, but watching them molt is truly amazing to see !

Very cool!! Does Tarantula Cribs make the giant size enclosure or no??
Great video. My baby C. Darlingi molted today. Hopefully a few more of mine will molt soon too.
Awesomeness as usual! 🖤🕷🖤🕷👍😍
When you put down the water bowl. you probably got something on you. Those spikes they shoot out. You scratched your leg, without thinking💚
I just started following your channel here🙂
Oh I saw your Poppy album in the background of the Skin Bin part! She is amazing in concert!
I saw her feb 2020 and was supposed to again but she skipped St. Louis and refunded us when her tour changed 😢
Skin Bin 🤣 love it! So gonna steal it haha!
Skin bin gives me some serious Silence of the Lambs vibes.
I still remember when I had to rehouse my lasiodora parahybana when it was smaller. It kicked so many hairs at me my face was on fire. Haha. The “over kill” is actually a great precaution. 👌🏼😂
just got my first T Stermi 2 months ago cant wait till that first molt!
I have literally been watching your channel for a week I hate spiders but after watching you I really would like to have one of my own thanks for educating me because I was so so scared of spiders lol
That molt mat was a "F*** around and find out" lol
Also kat I love you videos keep up the good work!
Thats a super cool tarantula you got there , love them! I do kinda feel bad for the worm though. 🤣
Love your videos. Always been fascinated by spiders. Very tempted to obtain a couple. Not sure where to go in Australia. I feel research time coming.
Simplynaillogical has her peely bag and TarantulaKat has her Molt Bin, I love it.
Time lapse is always cool.
That skin bin is a cool idea
Totally agree with your caution why risk it xxx
Hi Kat, I've really come to love T's after watching yours and others' channels. Question? Are those hairs on your gloves possibly and your clapping may send them flying? Do they come out of the fabric after laundry? tbh, I want a T but am scared of those hairs getting in my asthmatic lungs :0. Thank you for sharing all of your babies with us!
Love your channel!
Love your videos too.
I have always had an irrational fear of spiders but I feel like I am slowly working on it (I have been for years as I work with children and we're not allowed to show our fear) and I think that you and another channel are really helping.......I don't think that I can be in the same room as them but I don't jump so much looking at pictures
Oh no! Just got to the part that showed your rash. Hope you feel better soon :)
You handled yourself very well
I like your shirt 💕
Please just make
Videos every day, I get bored 😂🤍
😂 love the animal crossing transition music.
hair on the molt mat, what a great self defense idea.
Well done.
Mind blowing beauty!
The skin bin is awesome! You should fill it with epoxy and polish it. That would be a cool piece
tbh I laughed when you commented about the "snow" pile of hair
It's possible the misting may have kicked up some hairs, as it's sprayed with air. I use a garden sprayer (like Dave's Little Beasties); it allows me to keep my T.Stirmi's and T. apophysis's enclourses moist while they are out and about in the enclosures ( keep the nozzle as close to the substrate as possible). If they are inside their hides I use a basic plant waterer to "make it rain" as Tom Moran says. If they are out and about the 'rain' terrifies them.
Was awesome watching her molting some thing you don't see much of.
Yay!!! It really is molting season xD. I had 4 molts from my larger spoods in just one day!!!
