Thanks for another interesting video Mike. I own a lot of those albums, either vinyl or cd. There seems to be many new or upcoming releases this year that I hope you eventually talk about on your channel. The Jack Rubies just released a new one that's only on cd or streaming at this time, that is very cool. The new Cast is the best since All Change. The J & M Chain has a new one coming soon, as well as The Libertines. I'm sure there are plenty more that I forgot about. Thanks for taking the time to do these videos Mike. Regards
Oh yeah, forgot the Liam Gallagher - John Squire album due out this week. I know that Liam Gallagher can be polarizing to some but I find him hilarious and enjoy Oasis and his solo work.
Hi, I agree with you, another great year for music with lots of great new albums coming out. I really appreciate you watching my videos and will certainly be buying lots of new albums this year. You named some excellent ones. Mike
What a great choice, Mike. I think I may have mentioned that I saw John McGeoch with Siouxsie & the Banshees in 1981 (Brighton Conference centre). Oh happy day! Good luck with this entry.
Hi Bruce, fantastic, that was the Juju tour. I saw Siouxsie at the Southampton Gaumont either on that tour or the 1982, I just can’t remember which. But I do remember that they were brilliant! Thanks for commenting Bruce. Mike
Hiya Dave, I showed Mrs PC31 my twist and shout today….she was impressed! John McGeoch was a really inventive guitarist and played for some stellar bands Siouxsie, Public Image, Magazine amongst others. Thanks for watching Dave. Mike
Totally agree…..golden age for me as well. To think he played with Siouxsie, PiL, Magazine, Armoury Show (50% Skids), all favourite bands of mine. Glad you enjoyed my little trip through his career. Mike
Doyen, what a fantastic idea to show several great bands to feature for Jack's comp. McGeoch should be a household name. He's been on some of the best records. Died far too young. Cheers...The Bish
Hiya Bish (SBMBE), brilliant inventive guitarist for some great bands. I loved that Yamaha SG1000 at the time of Magazine and Siouxsie. I was tempted to buy one at that time but didn’t. D🎸
No worries, Im doing one as well for Jack, under the wire ! I need the first two Magazine records, nice showing and discussion about this stellar band ! 😊
It’s that first one that’s the absolute masterpiece JT, Real Life. Some even say it’s the jump off, the starting point, of post punk. They could be right, but it’s so good. I’m looking forward to seeing who you chose. Mike
I believe you are right, I have the debut on Cd. I'm doing something older, and .. British ! I really squeezed this one in ( Jacks contest ), I barely have time for my weekly, although I seem to make it happen and enjoy doing it, and my entry to his contest anyway .. Cheers 🎵
Really great and timely video for me - I've been meaning to listen to Magazine. I've heard about them in quite a few places but haven't got to them yet. I'll start with their debut. Hope you're doing well and things are not too hectic!
Hi K, hope all’s well with you? Magazine are certainly one of my favourite post punk bands. You’re right to start with ‘Real Life’ the debut, it really is a gem. They only made 5 studio albums, but there are a few compilation albums which are really good. The one I’ve got is called ‘Rays & Hail 1978-1981’, excellent album. They made one live album during their brief period together called ‘Play’ which is also brilliant. Their albums are quite hard to find, but definitely start with ‘Real Life’ Mike
@@pc31thevinylpoliceman I'm doing well. A bit busy because we adopted a 5 year old dog last month, and we're helping him get settled into his new home - he's a sweetheart and a complete muppet! Thanks for the recommendations. It's nice to know where to start and get guidance from someone who knows all about it!
Hello Mike, so glad you found the time to do an entry. Great in depth review of an artist I didn’t recognize at first, but I then realized I had a couple of albums he featured on, the second Magazine and the Gen X albums. I only got the Magazine album after you talked them up a while back. Exactly the type of artist I envisioned being featured when I started this contest. I’m already subbed to Morten and Janne, both great channels. Your name goes in the hat my friend, cheers.
Hi Jack, yes sorry for late entry. I’ve been planning and trying to do for last two weeks. It’s been a bit crazy. I’m a big fan of Magazine and in particular of John McGeoch. I’d strongly recommend their debut ‘Real Life’ it is a post punk masterpiece imho. Great you’ve got the second and the Gen X albums. Great contest Jack! Mike
Thank you for the kind shout-out/mention Mike. You know, I have never seen Magazines second album or its cover. Wow, the history of these splendid late 70’s and 80’s musicians and bands. John McGeoch joined right after Robert Smiths short stint with the band then? Splendid pick for Jacks video. Cheers Morten
No problem Morten, you have a great channel my friend! He was a brilliant guitarist and played for some classic bands. Robert Smith joined the Banshees after John McGeoch left. Robert subbed on tour in 1979. John joined band 1980-82, and Robert joined 1982-84. Banshees have some great history. Mike
Top shelf shout-outs. Of course, I am subbed to both. This is an excellent choice for the contest! This video is like a trip through my record collection, apart from The Armoury Show, which is new to me. Sadly, I don't have That What is Not either and I have had no luck finding it. The debut Peter Murphy record is interesting because he covers The Light Pours Out of Me on that record.
Hi Brian, have you come down from your enforced heavy rock ride? 😂 wow, I didn’t know Peter Murphy covered the brilliant ‘The Light Pours Out of me’. I must get hold of that record, that’s leaped up my ever expanding wantlist! Armoury Show is a difficult record to find but well worth the hunt. Yes, that elusive PiL album is also on the list. Mike
@@pc31thevinylpoliceman ‘The Light Pours Out of me’ is on the UK pressing, but it was left off Canadian version. It was restored in the CD edition. So, I have two vinyl copies and a CD copy. I've been trying to find that PiL for at least a decade. I saw it once, but the price! I probably should have bought it 😔 I have non buyer's remorse.
Great choice of topic. An extraordinary talent. When Magazine toured Australia in the early 80s I was delirious with excitement at the prospect of seeing John. Unfortunately he had just left the band and was replaced by Robin Simon. A wonderful replacement but he wasn’t John McGeoch. Thanks for the video.
Hiya Brett, well at least you got to see Magazine which is more than I can say. I’ve seen most of my favourite bands and artists over the years, but unfortunately missed Magazine. But as you say Robin Simon was a decent guitarist in his own right, but yes, seeing McGeoch would have been a bit special. Thanks Brett. Mike
Brilliant! A whole vid about my favourite guitarist. McGeoch did in fact record with Skids. He did a Peel session with them (Sept 1980, Siouxsie & Severin on backing vocals). He also recorded with Propaganda & The Sugarcubes, so there's some more McGeoch for you to track down.
Hi Nigel, Wow….I didn’t know about that JP session with the Skids. That’s gone top of the wantlist! I did know about the other two, although I haven’t got them. You probably are aware already, but in case you’re not, there is a Facebook group dedicated to John worth joining. Fantastic guitarist, massive loss. I really appreciate your comments! Mike
Hi Mike, it’s a shame, but The Armoury Show were very short lived, only one studio album. Basically they were 2 members of The Skids and two members of Magazine. Lead Vox and Bass from Skids, Guitar and Drums from Magazine. That one album is very hard to find though, it took me ages, but it’s excellent. Mike
Who is this unshaven lad on my screen? Wait a minute…that’s Mike! Are you high or am I? Your eyes look different today. Wonderful channel picks. Never understood why Janne doesn’t have more subscribers. And Jack, what a great fellow. Very unique pick for your discography showing. Nice history lesson!! The Banshees were really cranking out the albums in the early 80’s weren’t they!
Sorry for my shoddy appearance Lord Gary, but I am clinging very happily to your ‘lad’ reference! 😁 I’ll take being called ‘lad’ all day long 😂 I am just high on life 😂 Jack, Janne and Morten all great guys! John McGeoch was a very inventive guitarist and played for some stellar bands Siouxsie, Public Image, Magazine amongst others. Mike (now shaven) 😁
Hi Mike, like the original approach. I’m pretty thin on Magazine albums, something I’ll have to put right. What a stellar CV! When he died it was noticeable the heap praised on him by those he had worked with. Clearly held in very very high regard by his fellow musicians. On a different tack anything on the record day lists that has caught your eye? Andy
Hi Andy, yes, you’re right, he had massive respect from other guitarists and old band mates. The Magazine debut Real Life, really is a post punk masterpiece, some say the beginning of post punk. He’s not on the first Magazine live album ‘Play’ but that is also exceptional. With regard RSD, yes I think quite a few a good. Initial ones that caught my eye are……Be Bop Deluxe, Bowie, Elton, Joe Strummer, Galen & Paul, Killing Joke, Morrissey & Siouxsie, Members, Outsiders, Television and Peter Murphy. At this stage the must haves for me I think would be the Outsiders (Adrian Borland of The Sound. One of his pre-Sound bands + demos). Television live looks good. Must get the Elton and Bowie. I think it’s going to get expensive!! How about you Andy?? Mike
