- How to get MASSIVE Topspin on your 1 Handed Backhand (Quick and Easy!!!)
I am excited to bring this video to you. Many of you have 1 handed backhands and even if you don’t this video can certainly help you with your forehand or 2 hander. In particular improve your topspin so you can generate extra topspin to improve the quality of your shot and of course keep the ball in the court more often. After all SPIN is the only way to control the ball in tennis when swinging fast. Topspin makes the ball drop into the court preventing the ball from sailing long. It’s also quite difficult for your opponent to handle because often times they may misjudge the ball due to the heavy spin or they will mistime their shot due to the action on the ball. There is no doubt topspin and having a lot of it, must be in your repertoire. In this video I discuss how it’s not enough to just think to swing low to high or get your racquet below the ball. I share with you the unknown secret of how to create massive topspin quick and easy! I give you so many additional bonus tips too. Maybe best of all you’ll hear the 2 reasons why your not getting topspin, I call these “topspin killers.” Learn how to easily make the ball spin very fast so you can keep the ball in the court more often and make your opponent have a bad day every day!

Finally !!! After watching hundreds of RUclips videos, you are the only TP to explain how internal rotation of the shoulder brings the racquet head pointing down and close to the body. This automatically helps one lead with buttcap. This explains how to get there. Thanks Jeremy for super helpful tips few others know or are willing to share. 🎾
Cam Lendrim you are welcome, good luck!

I THINK YOU SOLVED MY BACKHAND PROBLEM JEREMY!! MY BACKHAND ENDS UP BEING MORE SIDESPIN , BUT NOW I KNOW WHY! YOU EXPLAIN THINGS OTHER PRO'S NEVER DO. KEEP UP THE EXCELLENT INSTRUCTION JEREMY!! THANK YOU!! 👍👍👍👍👏👏👏👏🎾🎾🎾🎾🎾🎾🎾
Very insightful! It’s as if I’m hitting modern forehand but it’s upside down and every bit as effective and eliminates all of the 1handers challenges that tends to frustrate so many. Now once it’s realized and learned it’s as if you have 2 modern forehands. Extremely formidable😲
Bonjour
I think its always important to address flexibility ANDmobility issues especially when talking about shoulder rotation. Many people dont train and strengthen these area and then hurt themselves unintentionally trying to do something good for their game.
Been watching all the one handed backhand vids and think I definitely learned the most from this one and I think it will definitely have a positive impact on my backhand...
Jeremy you are a god! Wish I had these detailed and insightful topspin instructions 30 years ago. Would have saved many a back fences from being damaged from my missiles and moon balls. Thank you!
i have never seen better explanation on backhand than this video altough i looked so many backhands videos before.Thank you so much for posting it.
Agreed! At least you've discoverd this guy (as I just have) as the one other vid I watched is excellent and I look forward to seeing and implementing more.
The best instruction of all channels (I have seen many) for the 1-h bh. By far.
I like the simplicity of explaining the anti-clockwise/clockwise principle for the shoulder as being like coiling to prepare and then uncoiling to release the power.
This makes it as simple an explanation as throwing a stone which anyone can do. Naturally being left handed I must reverse to clockwise/anticlockwise, but that can be done without thinking about it because you can only physically rotate the way you need to in order to make the shot.
I don't get much topspin, and I can see the ball slicing, through the air and bouncing off to the side. I deduced I am moving the contact points on the racquet from left to right, but visually it seems like a very small amount.
This is the first video I have seen that discusses this problem. They do say what the trajectory of the racquet face should be at contact, but they neglect to mention this important sympton that shows this is what is going on.
It is very useful to have someone connect these dots and confirm this can be a real problem. Now I think I can put in effort to ensure going along a straight line for a longer period of time. Will try tomorrow I hope.
You, my friend, are the best coach in the world. Been searching for decades for the secrets to a killer one handed backhand.
EXCELLENT JEREMY!! Most teaching pros only talk about getting the racket under the ball, but not to rotate the shoulder. YOU'RE AN EXCELLENT INSTRUCTOR JEREMY!! 👍👍👍
This is the first coach who makes sense.
He revealed to me the mechanics of the preparation.
Everything is coming from the shoulder joint!
Amazing.
Thank you.
Yes, it is absolutely critical to get the racquet head below the hand to impart topspin. This is true. But I don't understand why it necessarily needs to come from rotation of the shoulder. How about just movement of the wrist downwards, i.e.,
radial deviation, to get the racquet head below the hand.
healthjade.net/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/Movements-range-of-the-wrist.jpg
An obvious key point I did not find anywhere else. Thank you very much for this eccellent video. It just works.
Great work thanks dude. Going to work on this📚
I really appreciate how you break down the different components of the swing. It made me think of my recent shots in more detail, and helps me better understand why some of my backhand topspin shots went great, and some not so great. I especially liked the shoulder rotation instruction and racquet butt angle. I can’t wait to try that on the court!
Racket head pointed down, knees bent, left hand holding, going forward-n-up = I have 2 out of 4 and still suffering from swiping the ball toward the right. Pointing the racket head down is really good for me b/c it increases my sweet spot size quite a bit (I have a small head size racket). Holding the racket with the left hand longer is good b/c it both improves your aim and "coil" your shot. Don't forget to watch the contact. Thanks.
This is a great video brother, the sgoulder rotation is key, i got everything right exept from this and what s game changer.. This Is A pro tip so massive thanks
The tip for pre-rotating the shoulder is fantastic. It works by creating a spring effect and when you release your right hand, the shoulder returns to its original position with pressure to create a high top spin.
thank you... this clockwise turn is something I haven't seen anyone talk about... it makes sense. I feel it's a great lesson! Thank you so much again.

Great lesson, learned something, will try tomorrow. I was expecting dropping racket below hand level, but this shoulder rotation is a surprise to me, hope it works. Thank You Sir!:)
Bilgehan Kuyucu thanks, good luck!
Amazing explanation, very detailed and helpful, I have watched dozens of videos on this subject and there are at least three aspects that are barely mentioned there and very well explained here, the non-dominant hand going all the way long with the racket until the end of the racket head drop, the shoulder rotation, and the finish movement toward up, and not to the side. Thanks!
Thanks Jeremy.

Jeffrey Lara good luck! Thanks for watching 🙏
Thanks for the suggestion but my technique is pretty well defined. When I need extra topspin, I will do either drop my racket by just pronating my wrist or not drop the racket but supinate my wrist to get additional racket rotation at contact when my wrist returns to neutral. The later is bit more tricky to time and develop. I tend to use it more when I’m closer to the net and the ball is low but I can do both well. Since my wrist is very loose both options come quite naturally.
yeah I used to try that wrist twist to drop the racquet even lower at the beginning of the swing, but that often translated to inconsistency, because it's not easy for a wrist to handle the rotational power of a racquet upwards. Also brushing the ball at contact is good for some top & side spin, but overbrushing it takes power away from the hit. I think bending the knees the right time is what gives me the best topspin-power correlation
It’s great that you have your unique approach. Just don’t become a tennis instructor. Using the wrist in this fashion is an invitation to inconsistency.
If this works I will owe you one million dollars. Cant wait to try it!!!!
Glad that I subscribe to your channel! Very good!

This is an excellent video
Master piece instruction. Wow
I've been struggling with coaches telling me to start with the racket lower (pointed down), but NOT how to achieve this - rotate your shoulder. THANKS!
I know, right? When you don’t know what you don’t know, it’s hard to know, you know? (I knew you did!).
Knowledge is Power, but unfortunately Power doesn’t help our game. An out ball is still out, even if it’s going a hundred miles an hour. (And I say this from direct personal experience!)
Love your videos mate. Ive taken so much from them and really learn from the way t]you break things down into seperate components. I'd really appreciate a video on how to improve getting lighter on my feet.
keith buckel thanks Keith. Can u give me some detail on what u mean when u say “lighter on your feet” as it can mean several things.
@@FundamentalTennis - to be honest I'm not entirely sure, I just know that at times I feel my feet are very flat and I also dont feel like I'm covering the court very efficiently. not sure if its a physical thing I need to work on (jump rope etc) or a tactical positioning thing often times in the middle of a rally I have no idea where I should ideally be positioned on the court. I'm RH, 46 and weigh 210lbs I've been playing tennis since June last year so I'm still a beginner.
keith buckel alright I will make note. Thanks.
you have a good instructer asset

Vraiment cool...merci Jeremy 🎄

There’s even an extra little “dipsy-doodle” you can add to the end of the backswing that will increase your R.H. speed to superhuman heights. When you rotate your shoulder inwards and draw your racket back to (nearly) the end of your backswing, let your racket head pop up (accompanied by a small external shoulder rotation) to initiate the coveted “stretch shortening cycle” as you begin your (especially shoulder) rotation into the shot.
The racket will LAG slightly before whipping back down, and then up again, at blistering, blinding speeds where - if you’ve timed it right - you make contact with considerable forward and upward force. It sounds harder than it really is, it just takes a little (LIE: a LOT) of practice! Hey, I can do it and I’m in a wheelchair!
Note: I also keep my thumb along the back of the racket handle for extra stability and to keep my wrist locked at 90 degrees (perpendicular) to my racket.
When you find the sweet spot, it feels ROCK SOLID!! Try it, but then give up immediately and whine like a stuck baby pig about what a screwed up loser I am. But for those of you who actually stay with it and gain some proficiency, you will thank me. Big time.
Brilliant, thankyou

Really outstanding explanation on the theoretical physics of the groundstroke. I really learned a lot and am excited to apply these points
Hi Jeremy. Very nice video instruction. Thank you.
Any advice on how loose the hand should be holding the racquet handle? Similar to the forehand topsin video?
Barry Mizrahi hi, this should answer your question: ruclips.net/video/HpJItJ3_qvY/видео.html
Why does RUclips only recommend me your channel A YEAR AFTER subscribing to my first tennis coaching channels ?... I wish I had seen this video long ago !...
Interesting tip!

Hi Jeremy, I am always having trouble with the early preparation especially with my single handed backhand. Would you please cover on how best we can recognize the incoming ball to our backhand side early enough and prepare ahead so that we are not late on hitting the single handed backhand. I believe I can hit a single handed backhand if I have all the time. But, I almost always mess it up due to the lack of early preparation. This goes in general with any ground stroke. But, the one handed stroke is the most difficult one to handle. Thank you in advance...

Bob Usualis My pleasure
even unintentionally I think all onebh players do the shoulder - racquet drop thing. I think the real secret for creating more top spin are bending the knees properly before contact and of course the whole swing technic plays a role to the final outcome
TMPOUZI hi there, I’ve seen many players not rotate the shoulder due to being tight etc. Yes, knee bend is a must
Important to keep the hitting wrist extended/laid back and radial deviation of hitting hand or it’s game over for the stroke! Lack of racket angle control at contact.
again , watch the slowmotion!!!!! and now take your racket and put it in contact with extention and radial deviation and tell me what you see, waiting for your response
@@thereisnogod3924 “no soup for you”
Hey Jeremy, which would you consider a “better” backhand? The one- or two-handed?
I started with a one-handed but am now using a two handed and both are fine. But I’d love to stick to one and improve on it.
My issues with the one-handed is the difficulty on returning serves as well as fast-paced rallies. With the two-handed, it definitely is more consistent and easier to deflect and absorb pace off the ball, but I find it much harder to kill short balls and generate similar levels of pace and spin to the one-handed.
Love to hear what you think!

So externally rotate shoulder to do a windshield wiper?
Very interesting as usual. Does this advice about the anti-clockwise rotation of the dominant shoulder apply to the two handed backhand and the forehand? Also, could it be used in volleying when dealing with ball aimed at the body and with some low volleys?
Chris Constable a bit on the 2 hander yes but like the 1 hander, it’s certainly big on the forehand.
Hi Jeremy hope you can help me.
I can hit my one handed backhand well after watching your video tuition, BUT only from a drop feed or a short hand-feed.
As soon as I progress to free hitting, I don’t feel I have enough time to get all the prep done, the unit turn, racquet drop and then the forward swing. As the ball is bounding toward me I panic and swing early, sometimes late, and rarely get my racquet to the contact point.
Strange because on the forehand I rarely miss the contact point and am totally confident of the hit.
What am I missing here on the backhand? Hope you can help.
David Colman hi David. It is incredibly common that players go back to their old habits once they get into live ball. This is because you are back to your environmental habit where muscle memory is hard to fight. Progressions are a MUST when changing any technique. Here are progressions that will help you: ruclips.net/video/se_1-WLNjb4/видео.html
thank you Jeremy. I’ll definitely do the progressions and I never thought about videoing myself doing them, but great Idea. I’ll let you know how I go.
David Colman Awesome, I look forward to your feedback
Is this same for forehand
Very nice video. My BH is general solid with lots of variety, but am looking into tranforming it into more of a weapon. I noticed after comparing videos of myself and the pros, my left elbow has a tendency to be relatively low and close to my body. Do you have any drills for this? The pros like Thiem, Henin, Gasquet, Haas have their elbows way up. Yours as well.
HealthSpan888 here are great progressions to work on that: ruclips.net/video/se_1-WLNjb4/видео.html
beautifully explained. I dont have proper internal shoulder rotation , this kills my banana on the backhand
Hi, great video as always. I'm struggling with overrotating the upper body. Any idea or drill to correct this? Best regards from Germany.
BMW Fahrer hello and thank you. As said in the video you want to throw your non-dominant arm backwards to prevent the body from opening up too much. I suggest holding your finish and checking your finish until the ball bounces on the opponents side of the net also perform shadow swings and Short Court rally before rally from the baseline.
@@FundamentalTennis Thank you very much for your answer. I'll try. Merry Christmas!!
BMW Fahrer good luck, merry Christmas!
I notice that in this demo the dominant arm is locked at the elbow throughout the swing. Is that mandatory? I often start this way since it encourage me to hit early and out in front, but it is hard when on the run sometimes. Any feedback?
lamgefyoutoob hello, no that’s not mandatory. It’s certainly not a fundamental in that you don’t need the arm straight during preparation but u do want it straight near the start of the forward swing and until the finish. Straight arm take-back can definitely be easier for rec players.
What grip should I use on my one handed backhand in order to get an optimal topsping/power hit?
is that speed mp ?
Jeremy, I would love to know what you thought of an old Vic Braden suggestion where you extend your thumb along the back of the racket handle when hitting a backhand. I've fooled around with this grip over the years and, although it produces a flatter ball than I like, the solid, stable contact you get with it is awesome!
I like to use different grips and have several versions of each stroke depending on the given situation, but my game also has ZERO consistency! I can hit spectacular winners and then literally not be able to hit the ball over the net between points! So my question is:
Is that necessarily the cause of my consistency woes or is it perfectly normal for good players to have "variations for situations", i.e. different forms of each stroke depending on what you need to do in a given scenario?
Federer's backhand slice is a wholly different stroke than his goto backhand. It's an asset in his repertoire. Unless the variety of your strokes causes confusion or indecision while in play, then it's likely not the cause of inconsistency. Usually inconsisstency is caused by lack of practice or preparation or more often by too much thinking about what you're doing. This causes you to tighten up intermittently and inhibits your true potential as a player. The best remedy for this is to lose. Let yourself go full out even if you lose ten matches in a row or twenty. Eventually, when you lose the desire to prove something, you'll relax and play to your full potential, then consistency will no longer be a problem. Remember, you're as good as your best shots, you just have to relax and be confidenr enough to execute them with regularity.
Thanks Robert, I liked your comment very much! As a matter of fact, I *HAVE* lost 20 matches in a row (I know this only because I have never won a single match. Ever. Seriously. )
BUT THATS OKAY. I still have a blast when I’m out there and that’s what counts, right?
OF COURSE NOT. After playing tennis for over half a lifetime, I think it’s perfectly reasonable to expect to win one or two contests, even if totally by accident.
So this season I have decided that I’m going to win a match, maybe even two. It’s easy to win in recreational tennis, all you have to do is get the ball back.
No matter how ugly, just keep lobbing the ball back in play and the other guy will decide that beer is more important and tank. Hey, easy win. (And you still get to have a beer!).
This is the year!!
Definitely all true but the trick is when to reverse the arm twist, can’t be late.
“Reverse the arm twist” as in the dominant arms rotation during the upward/forward swing on the way to the contact with the ball?
@@FundamentalTennis yes - there is a timing to it. You may have talked about it but if you make contact and you’ve just begun to bring racket around (untwist the arm) you won’t get much spin.
@@honkeyness9427 yes and even worse, the strings will face slightly upwards at contact
Great video, is your rac head speed pro? If so use the same rac, what’s your optimal tension I string it with solinco hyper g 1.20mm with 48lbs and find it good but still a lil jarring with slight off centre hits especially with 1hbh. Do you reckon I should tension it lower?
Nightshiift yes it is. I use Solinco hyper - G 17g at 48lbs. I think it would be a good idea to try a slightly lower tension and see how you like it.
Also do you use leather grip under the over grip?
Nightshiift I do not but I do like that
I don’t know why but I don’t receive the serve series?? I’ve checked my spam etc and nothing? It’s been 2 weeks now :(
Q.T.π Hello, are you referring to the free serve course? If you are then try registering again and see if that fixes it. Let me know if it is still an issue after trying that
Fundamental Tennis yes that one. I’ve tried it again for a different email and I still don’t seem to be receiving it :(
