This is an interview with General David Petraeus. General Petraeus spent 37 years in the U.S. Army. Over the course of his career, he led the U.S. Central Command, the U.S. and coalition forces in Iraq and Afghanistan and after his service in the military, he served as the Director of the CIA. Overall, he's considered one of the most prominent and effective military leaders of this century.
In this conversation, we talk about his experience from Iraq and Afghanistan, but mostly about the war in Ukraine - what lessons should we be taking from it, whether we have a strategy to win and what's going to happen next.

@@glintongordon6811 Agreed. An interviewer should ask hard questions, find instances of shortcomings and demand clarification, and so-on. While I enjoyed Petraeus's commentary, he was simply allowed to present his views unchallenged on a friendly platform. Interesting how he just decided that the interview was finished after he had said his piece.

Good theatre commanders come up with & divide up & assign as packages very sound, very doable missions as part of their army's overall mission in theatre, in my case the US Army & about a half-Dozen other Armies in-theatre as MNF.
That's what the General did. He gave us sound, doable missions with on-time logistics & not only combined arms but inter-National AND inter-Service combined arms support, & if you've ever fought alongside multiple armies (which the Russians have but only once recently before 2024, with the Syrians, & never in truly large numbers) you know that 3C in a multinational army can get FUBAR real fast if people aren't reading from & remembering the same page.
We never had to really worry about what our people behind or in front of us were doing. We had high confidence that our flanks & six were reasonably well-protected, even against non-uniformed sappers & paramilitant fighters.

Fortunately for him, he was caught after becoming CIA director when it's not technically illegal. But I'm sure you can imagine the national security risk that poses, if say, a hostile foreign government discovered the CIA director was having an affair and blackmailed him... something they used to do very expertly back in the day.
The FBI cares. His affair was discovered by the FBI who had to do a whole counter-intelligence investigation into it precisely to ensure he wasn't being blackmailed, and he was eventually forced to resign.

General Petraeus has an excellent grasp of any theater of war and displays all of the best qualities of a professional soldier that comes out of the American experience. He shares his pedigree with every great officer who passed their knowledge and experience and embodied their best. MacArthur, Eisenhower, Patton, Schwarzkopf, Bradley, Powell - going all the way back to Pershing, Grant and Sherman. He excels as a man on his own merit and benefits from standing on the shoulders of giants - and from the unbelievably capable corps of officers and enlisted who make it all happen. The greatest that we can offer NATO members is access to this deep reservoir of knowledge and competence - because while material is important to winning conflicts, it’s more often won by knowing application of strategy and the competence of the soldiers to do everything asked of them and more. This is where Americans excel, and where Ukrainians have become excellent too as they fight for their very existence. Slava Ukrainia.

10:55 I'm in favor of General Petraeus interpretation that Ukraine "needs to figure out how to shore up" its defenses in Eastern Ukraine, but I don't believe it. I don't doubt that there have been local incidents where withdrawals did not go exactly according to plan and losses which exceeded acceptable threshold occurred. But for the most part, the strategy which Ukraine has demonstrated in the broad silhouette of daily, weekly and monthly engagements and changes in territorial control is of a very well-conceived, well-executed and intentional fighting withdrawal. They make Putin's Orc Horde pay for every square meter they temporarily occupy, but calling that 'barely able to keep its defense' together seems speculative at best. Ukraine has launched a major offensive into Kursk and appears to intend to hold the territory they have taken for the duration of the remainder of the war. They also appear to intend to take more territory. And moreover, as General Petraeus points out, they have done so masterfully and caught the Putin regime completely by surprise, unable to respond effectively and in progressively worse cage of dilemmas. Ukraine has convinced the world that it was at a weak point in the war and General Petraeus is repeating that (whether because he hasn't thought it through or he is simply promoting their information warfare, it doesn't matter). But I don't believe it.
What EVERYONE needs to understand: Westerners, Russians, and everything else, is that UKRAINE IS GOING TO PREVAIL. The spirit of independence and resolve in Ukrainian society is unmistakable. Even if Ukraine were forced to fight against a Russian occupation of their entire country, they would not cease their struggle and eventually Russia would be forced to withdraw, just as they were forced to withdraw from Afghanistan.
Given this, the smart thing for every Western citizen and every Western leader is to call for MAXIMUM support for Ukraine NOW! The sooner Ukraine is given every possible form of assistance it can get the sooner they can win this and the sooner the horror is over. The time for wringing our hands about "escalation" is over; it has been over honestly for over ten years, and most of the suffering which has transpired during that interim could have been averted had Western leadership stood by Ukraine in its struggle against Russian imperialism right from the beginning in 2014.

Part of the reason why there was so much chaos and so many civilians left behind in Afghanistan is when originally given the order to prepare for the withdrawal under the Trump administration the seditious military leadership ignored the order. So when the Biden administration enacts the will of the American people to pull the trigger and withdraw from Afghanistan (keeping the word of the United States in the process) the military was not ready for it. Afghanistan is a war that the more I look at it the less respect I have for men like Petraeus (as a USMC vet no less.) By his own words the objective was to be there forever.
Our forces in Afghanistan were supplied by private contractors who were in tern defended by contractors whom (due to not having the punch of the US military) were given the funds to bribe the Taliban to let the convoys through. For twenty years *EVERY BULLET FIRED IN AFGHANISTAN FUNDED THE TALIBAN.* There is no way people like Petraeus were actually trying to win that war. They were just ghouls trading American lives for their own careers under politicians who sold out American lives so their friends could make a fortune.

What a fantastic interview and thank you so much for posting this and letting General Petraeus speak. Harry Truman made a statement during World War II regarding the fight against the Japanese. It went; "when you deal with the beast, you have to treat him like a beast." That was certainly the situation in Iraq as well. If the psychopath Saddam Hussein and his two psychopathic Sons had remained alive, countless thousands would have been tortured and murdered. That was just business as usual for the Hussein regime. The Middle East is too complicated to tie it up and put a bow on it in a simple comment on RUclips. But I think that we did do the right thing.
