went hiking at 1900 one evening listening to this on my headphones... suddenly realized i wouldn't hear the difference between a hog IRL and one on the track - so i stopped the track. the atmosphere was great though.

The ambience and music i believe, is truly what makes the stalker games what they are. It is way more than just an icing on the cake, because...
When I played the first one, Shadow of Chernobyl, after about 30-50 minutes of playing the game i died in it for the first time.
I died not in an epic gunfight or in a boss fight with glamorous music that makes you feel like you're fighting at the end of the world, but to a pack of wolves gathered in a collapsed tunnel because i was curious and my pistol was too little to habdle them.
It wasnt anything fancy, and if it was some other game, i would have either laughed, went "oh well, better try again" or been slightly frustrated.
But no, when i died for the first time, i thought to myself something very close to: "okay, now THIS game is special!".
It was because i was so immersed in the game that even scavenging a house after a gunfight and dying to a pack of wolves was so astonishingly facinating.
Sure, it wasnt just the ambience, but other things as well, but all those distant soubds that indicate there is something out there, but you dont know what it is other than something you should watch out for is what makes stalker make people have this feeling VERY FEW other games can replicate.
Because, when i played stalker, i felt like i was actually living through someone elses eyes and ears, like i was on a journey that i had some control over. The only other games i can remmeber that made me feel like this are the ones made by from software.
Most games, "linear" or "open-world" feel more like you're either just playing out a theatre play or going through a book that is visualized. Sure, some games tell fantastic stories like this and make me think about things that matter in this world, but many others don't, and most certainly most don't make me feel the same way about the memories of them like stalker does.
The reason I loved it is that despite the unforgiving environment, a general feeling of misery ... I felt right at home. You have nothing, you are nothing, just a rookie stalker set out to experience the zone.

It's been 2 years, i just installed clear sky for the first time in over a decade - enojying it and taking it slowly
do yourself a favour and play stalker anomaly, the best version of stalker optimized by fans and is free, am absolutely addicted to it at the moment, also check out stalker gamma which is the best version of anomaly through much tougher, it's a massive modpack of more than 300 the best curated mods and they have actual dayly updates to make it better and more stable

@@ianmarais9403 fuck no. OP, do not listen to this, play the original STALKER trilogy first. Anomaly is and will always be just a mod. It is definitely, 100% not as good as the original.
BROTHERS! please look into the Stalker books, there is a lot of books set in this realm and from many different authors (Polish and Russian from my experience) well worth the effort even if you don't normally read books by the campfire... it keeps the janre and realm alive!

The Zone is a noospheric rift. In Call of Pripyat, it is revealed that the constant background whispering and wailing you hear from time to time is part of a constant stream of thoughts, but after using anabiotics too often, the protagonist won't hear it anymore. That difference is supposedly featured in the game, but I can't really confirm it.
Based on this, I posit the theory that the ambient music we hear is actually part of the lore.
Hear me out: If a STALKER in the Zone is capable of hearing these thoughts all the time, of the entire noosphere, they would eventually go utterly mad. So the brain would have to block them out somehow, shove them into the subconsciousness.
What if these thoughts are interpreted by the brain as music? Or...maybe not necessarily as the ambient music itself, but as the mood it carries? Constantly playing in the STALKER's head?
Meaning that if a STALKER says "I've got a bad feeling about this" they're right to be cautious? Because many dark memories and emotions (fear, horror, sadness) would hang in the air in that place he's venturing towards?
It's a thin theory based on utter conjecture, but who knows. The flaw in this theory is evident: If these anabiotics would sever Major Degtyarov's connection to the Noosphere, based on my theory he would not be able to hear ANY "ambient music" anymore, but he does.
Yes the antibiotics makes you sleep through emissions without taking damage
You then gain the ability to sleep through emissions if your health is 100% after using the drugs 3 times
I can imagine sitting at the military outpost in a watchtower, holding a poorly conditioned AK and looking out into this alien, twisted landscape, it looking so normal, yet so different, wrong.

I listen this before I go to sleep. I have anxiety, this atmosphere makes me feel relaxed. When I hear gun shots and wild dogs in distance, I think I am safe in my shelter and I don't need to go outside. I can sleep now.

The ambience made the zone feel very real and lived in. As if at any moment STALKERs way off in the distance were fighting mutants or rival factions or they were getting mauled by a mutant so you could hear their screams.
