  • Today's unboxing review is for an SUV that most everyone is quite familiar with, the 2017 Mercedes-Benz GLE350. Before we go any further, you should know that the GLE-Class used to be known as the M-Class, which debuted back in 1997. In fact, the M-Class was the first luxury SUV to have electronic stability control. However, Mercedes changed the name for 2015. Why? Because the German automaker wanted all of its crossovers/SUVs to have a three-letter moniker. Aside from that, the GLE350 is still the great mid-size luxury crossover we've come to love over the years. Power now comes from a 3.5-liter bi-turbo V6 with 302 hp and 273 lb-ft of torque. Power is sent to all four wheels (this is the AWD 4Matic model) through a seven-speed automatic transmission.
    Our tester came painted in Polar White along with optional 20-inch 5-spoke alloy wheels. We also really liked the optional illuminated star on the front grille for an extra $550. What about a third-row? Nope. This is strictly a two-row crossover, and that's a good thing because you'll want the available cargo space instead of an extra set of seats. Along with Mercedes' COMAND infotainment system, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capability, the GLE350 is a great all-around package. Just one thing, however: it's aging. Fast, and the competition is fierce. Enjoy the review!

    One mistake that is not a turbocharged V6. The E350 I have has the same engine that is naturally asperated. Other than that great job! We are considering getting this car!

    Used GLE's (and GLC's) are actually great deals if you stick to just the basic six cylinder with regular suspension. Just avoid the high end turbo charged and AMG engines and things like air ride suspension, they require lots of (expensive) maintenance as they age. I purchase a low mileage 2016 V6 GLE in 2019 and have driven the hell out of it for work (over 78k miles) and have never had to do anything but regular maintenance (oil changes, brakes and the like). And no, unlike some of the high end Mercedes (like the S Class), you don't have to take them to the dealer for every service or oil change, they are common enough that my local Valvoline changes the oil and does regular maintenance without a second thought (for $50 versus $250 at the dealer).

      The base GLC usually have the 2.0L turbo-4 engine, unless you get the GLC 43 AMG which has a twin-turbo inline-6

    It's normally aspirated in the 3.5 liter V6 not bi-turbo. The GLE43,63,63S uses bi-turbo technology in a 3.0 V6 and 4.0 V8.

      Yeah, it's nice but I still think the GLE-Class is in need of a complete redesign. There's a new BMW X5 on the way, too.

    The car does look dated. Elegant but certainly older then it's competitors. They are suppose to revamp the body and styling for 2018. Greatly looking forward to it. I have a feeling it will look like an extended GLC however.

    The reason for the nomenclature change never had anything to do with BMW. It was a company-wide change to make their nomenclature more intuitive... All SUVs begin with GL and have three letters (minus the G-Class). GLA, which they consider a crossover SUV, GLC, GLE, GLS. In speaking of classes, GLA is similar to a CLA, GLC is the C-Class of SUVs, GLE is the E-Class of SUVs, GLS is the S-Class of SUVs... hence the last letter of each model name.

    • @amandaavia
      @amandaavia 7 лет назад +1

      Also, they don't advertise it as such, but the GLE Coupe is standardly an AMG. You will never find a GLE Coupe that does NOT have an AMG engine, which may explain the hiked MSRP if you're looking at that. Just spittin' knowledge!

      Macan is smaller. Lexus has less power and features. And the Jag has horrible reliability. I’d take the GLE over all those. The Cayenne would be a better comparison
