I always thought Anger had a similar role to Mr. Potato Head in Toy Story1 . They somewhat acted antagonistic later in the film but it was out of good intentions or misunderstandings. But Anger felt more sympathetic than Mr. potato head .
It's sort of the movie's way of telling you that, despite the movie's simple premise on personifying emotions, emotions are a spectrum and complicated. It ends up being the moral for the whole thing when Joy and Sadness make a new kind of core memory, one that's both yellow and blue
