- I had been looking for a new 2 person tent so when Naturehike Outdoors contacted me to see if I would be interested in testing and reviewing their Star River 2 tent I quickly accepted

Excellent show as always.Have checked out the natureshike line,seems pretty good at more than fair pricing.Saw one on English moors hold up very well in high rain and winds.Thanks for everything!

Looks like a feature loaded tent. You covered everything and you'll probably be offered a job now selling tents for this company. We'll miss you. Not sure on the quality but you just did the best tent commercial I have ever seen!!
I wouldn't compare it against the bug names like MSR and Big Agnes but I feel it punches way above its weight class. It appears to be a good tent but only time will tell for sure. Thanks for commenting...BTW..I am enjoying retirement too much to go back to work😉

Well done review Mark. It looks like you may have a winner there. It certainly reminds me of my MEC Volt tent which has held up nicely for years now. (almost twice the price thou !) 2 details i noticed about your tent that i like are that the ends come up almost at a 90 degree angle which means your head and sleeping bag at your feet will not be in contact with the tent material. There also looks to be a good amount of air space between the tent body and fly for circulation.
I recently ordered the Pariah Breeze Mesh Tent and i'm going to use that with my Siltarp 2 as a very lightweight super compact setup for pretty much 3 season use. The tent itself was only 60 bucks and seems so far to be a quality item. Cheers !
Thanks for the kind words Dan. It looks like the Star River 2 has design elements also found on the MSR Hubba Hubba and Big Agnes Copper Spur 2...hard to argue with successful designs. I will definitely look at the Pariah Breese Mesh tent as well. I recently ordered a hanging bug net to go with a small tarp for alight weight compact setup. Thanks for commenting

I once went camping and forgot the tent poles : O silly ol' me! I ended up hiring a ramshackle static caravan... happy days ; )

It’s a great tent, but I’m lightening up my kit.
It’s a toss up between the Star River and the Mongar 2.
This one is becoming more appealing, as it’s lower profile, and it gets pretty windy here in the UK.

Extremely glad I came across this review before I dropped close to 400 pound on an MSR Hubba, this looks like an exact copy for quarter of the price! 🤷🏻♂️

Looks nice. Maybe you can leave it out in the rain to see how it does. Very important to insure no leaks.
Hardest part here is that we have had so little rain this summer. I may have to spray it with a garden hose..I'll be sure to get it wet. Thanks for commenting
When just putting up a fly only on these type of tents. Is that people forget to dig a small canal/ditch near the borders of the tent to slow rain water from entering between the ground and the bottom edge of the rainfly around the tent. We always did that with our US ARMY pup tents because of no bottom was attached to it.

Maybe suggest to nature hike to do a reinforced piece with a tie out in it sewn to the middle of the footprint ( where you had the stick standing)

Man that looks alot like my Dominion 2.5p from Outdoor Vitals other than the higher end for more headroom. I actually just left Dartmouth last week visiting my 2nd son and his family. After spending 3 weeks helping my son build a house by Mabou.
I just had a look at the Outdoor Vitals tent and agree they share a lot of the same design. I have found quite a few tens that do as well including the MSR Hubba Hubba and the Big Agnes Copperspur 2. It appears to be a good concept. The Outdoor Vital products look great. Would love to test some out some day. Thanks for commenting

I like the doors. I have the cloud up 2, and the tiny little door is so annoying. Also I rekon it has the same mesh as the river, and it is very hot inside, especially with the rain fly on.

I have a MSR Hubba 2 thats now leaking from the floor and canopy , got over 18 yrs of use. Looking for something similar but with the added winter season use as well. Any recommendations ? Star River 2?
The MSR Hubba is a much better tent than this one. Depends on your budget. This tent will work and is worth the money but I doubt you will get the same years of service from it. Still, may be cheaper to buy this tent if it only lasted 10 years. Thanks for commenting
Phenomenal review! I have been looking into Nature Hike and you sold me on getting a tent from them. Do you know the difference between the Star River version and the Mongar version? Which would you prefer? Thanks!
Glad you liked the review. From what I can tell, the Mongar is identical to the Star River with the exception that the cross bar appears to be a bit longer on the Mongar. Not much of a help I am sure. Thanks for commenting
Hey there, great review! Thanks a lot... I was wondering if you did a long-term review. Can't find it. Still using it? About to decide between the Mongor and the Star River.
I am still using it and have used it heavy rain. No leakage and no other issues. Other than I forgot to peg it down one day and it blue away onto some rocks. The fly had a hole in it but I repaired it using a patch from the bag. The material does stretch some when wet and shrinks again when dry. The Mongar and Star River appear very similar. I can't tell the difference from the pictures (of the Mongar). Thanks for commenting
@@MarkYoungBushcraft I just got the chance to check out and compare the Star river side by side with the Mongor. The star river is not as spacious as the Mongor since the inside walls are going more diagonal. This is due to the shorter cross bars on top. Since I’m almost 2m, this is an issue and I’m going with the Mongor. Thanks and have a great day

Hi. I am subscribed to your channel but I missed this video until just yesterday, which was exactly one day after my new Naturehike Star River 2 tent was delivered. I am happy with process I used to select it, but continue to be curious how others have found it to hold up under stormy and windy conditions. I haven’t seen much other than initial impression and set-up videos. Your video is about 4 years old now. Do you still use this tent? Have the materials held up? Have you ever used it in stormy conditions? If so, how did it fare? Thanks!
Oops, I could have answered my own questions by reading some of the other comments. It seems as if your tent has lasted awhile, handled rain ok (with minor zipper issues when fabric was wet & stretched out). I am still curious how it will do in gusty conditions.
In truth, I have not used it a lot. Maybe eight times. I did use it in a heavy rain storm and it worked well. I had an issue of my own making where i did not stake it down and the wind carried it over some rocks. I did end up with holes i. The fabric i had to repair but no structural damage. Hope this helps

Hello! do you know the NATUREHIKE MONGAR tent? Can you tell the difference between MONGAR and STAR RIVER?
I have not tested the Mongar but it appears very similar in design. I note that the "wishbone" where the poles separate is the same on both ends of the Mongar but is shorter on one end of the Star River. Hope this helps
what is that sleeping pad? I am in need of an upgrade!
Hey Steve. I have the Sea-to-Summit Comfort Plus. I like it as it has two inflatable chambers (top and bottom) in the event it springs a leak. Hope to meet up soon

So, I have only used the tent about six times and only once in heavy rain. It is standing up well with no leaks. I did find on annoying thing. The zipper on the vestibule jammed up when it got wet and stretched. Only the once. I will likely do a follow up review sometime this summer. Thanks for commenting

Hi Mark, firstly I just want to say that I'm a big fan of your videos and you as a video maker and outdoors man.
I've recently bought The Naturehike Cloud Up 2 and I'm very impressed with the build quality looking identical to the quality and build of yours.
I got the 210T tent instead of the 20D but I'm confident it's waterproof and am yet to rain test it, I can always add a waterproofer to it later.

Mark Young Thanks for your reply and your time. Being someone who understands fabrics better than me, in terms of waterproof/resistance, do you think there is a big difference between the 20D and the 210T fabrics?
John, I would not classify myself as highly knowledgeable on tent fabrics but from what I know, 210T polyester should work just as well as the 20D nylon for tents, as long as both are well treated for waterproofness (silicone impregnated). My understanding is that polyester tends to stretch/shrink less than nylon. Excessive shrinkage can put a lot of strain on the seams. Hope this helps

At 6ft5; you think this would work for me? maybe diagonal? I have a 3 inch thick pad
So I am only 5'10" but I have about 6" to 8" at either end. The width should give you what you need corner to corner. I will measure next time I set it up. I still plan to make a long term use video with it. Thanks for commenting

I don't know difference between star 2 and mongar 2. It's inner mesh region?

It seems like they used different pole structures too. Just like BA Tiger Wall, Star River2 has asymmetrical head and foot section, that's why the used a colour coated poles to tell which is which. On the other hand Mongar's structure looks closer to the MSR Hubba-Hubba, which have the same height between both of their ends. CMIIW.

Mark how was this tent long term? Durable or not? Dry or leaker? Great review buddy.
So far so good. In truth, I have only used it about a dozen times. Has remained waterproof. Only issue I had was the zipper catching on material when it got wet and sagged a bit. I just had to be aware of it to avoid it.
Did you ever take the tent out for a test? Can't find any video about that.
I had it out four times but did not record a video because of the setting I was at. Once in heavy rain and high winds. No leaking. Hope to make a video using it soon. Thanks for commenting

I have only been able to get out with it for 7 nights so far. I have had it in heavy rain twice. I have had no issues with water getting in at all. I did experience some stretch of the fly when wet. Not unusual. I did have one bad experience where high winds pulled the steaks out of the ground while it was empty and it ended up with a rip in the fly. Once I have this repaired or replaced I will do a long term review. Hope this helps
