Sorry to hear you got threats like that. Unbelievably cruel. You got my support whenever you need it man. Really appreciate your reactions and honesty. I always look forward to your channel. Thanks and best wishes.
I’m a guitar player and I’ll just say it is pretty hard to play behind your back. Nevermind to be able to play at that level but, the logistics of it adds to the difficulty lol
SRV never plays a song the same way twice. That’s one thing that makes him SRV. The whole playing behind the back thing was just SRV’s thing. It was expected. Just like if you go to a Motley Crue show it is expected that Tommy Lee will have his drum kit on a roller coaster or if you go to an AC/DC show it is expected that Angus will do a strip during The Jack. That’s just what makes them “them”. It’s significant to mention that before he did this cover he actually went to see Jimi Hendrix’s father and asked permission to do the song. Big props to him for doing that . Having said that ……. We miss you SRV😢
Stevie would never have said he was a legend or GOAT, etc. Not in his nature. He'd said his brother, Jimmie, was better player, Hendrix, or just about anyone else he admired. Nor would he have condoned people attacking you. Thank you for your reaction. New sub, here.
Since you kept guessing the size strings he played and missing by a mile it only shows you've never really seen the size of his hands compared to most people. His hand size is out of proportion to his own body. The huge muscles in his forearms from repetitive non stop playing since age 7 also helps him play his "piano wire" strings. Just for grins Google an image of Stevie and David Bowie with their arms around each other's shoulders! You can clearly see his hand size and strength advantage enabling to get those great bends you see and he still breaks those suckers on a regular basis. One of his best broken string, guitar switch I've seen him do is "Look at Little Sister" from Austin City Limits in 1989. It is boss level and his guitar tech is race car pit crew fast. Check it out! Stevie doesn't miss a beat. I know you said if you know your guitar playing behind the back isn't that hard. Maybe, but you sure don't see many players do it. It takes a lot of arm strength as well to hold it far enough away from the body so it doesn't mute the strengths. Heck a lot of people can't even get their arms behind their backs let alone play a guitar. So bottom line is it just mesmerizes me to watch him play as his commitment, passion, and love of playing is so obvious and he gets swept away playing but he takes us with him. 🎸🎶‼️✌️💙
Not his best version of the song. But, Stevie is always great. Looks like he was at the Jerry Lewis Telethon, helping raise money for Jerry's kids. Stevie was an all around good guy.
🤘SRV grew up in hell and survived to become the legend he is. I was in junior high when I started listening to him and then the tragic helicopter crash happened. Really sad day. But we can all drop the needle and turn it up to 11 and listen to that sweet guitar sing.
The cool thing a about SRV and Jimi is, they both improvised so much, both most times didn't play a song twice the same way and that is what makes them both the greatest
You should check out his performance of "Look at little sister" from Austin City limits. He breaks a string mid solo and swaps guitars without missing a beat in the song
22:55 - Stevie actually always used really thick gauge strings - it was a pretty key component to how he got his tone - i think he used 10s or 11s usually. He was a monster on the guitar, finger strength like no other to get bends like that on those strings
13's when he was younger and switched to 12's shortly before he passed and tuned down 1/2 step. This young kid handed Stevie a squire to play and sign and Stevie broke the neck from the power of his hands.
Maaaaan. I’m so… SO SORRY those people acting like that. They should be completely ashamed of themselves. Especially if they’re true Stevie Ray Vaughan fans because they would know Stevie always preached positivity and love in this world. So sorry you had to deal with that
Unlocking the strap and swinging the guitar around, then locking the strap back behind his back and keeping the sustained note throughout is pretty impressive lol.
Great review (as always), David. Super insight into SRV’s technique and that of the band. Sorry you’ve gotten threats, etc, for past reviews. That’s nuts. Your honest comments are the best! I can tell when other Reactors are just telling us what we want to hear and don’t appreciate it at all. Keep up the great work!
I like that SRV does his own thing with this tune and stays true to the original. Strange how you would get so much hate from SRV fans, SRV always preached love your fellow human.
There is no excuse for anyone to make such inhuman threats. Everyone has a right to their opinion and you are always so constructive and sensitive in your opinions it is refreshing to see, and you back it up with actual experience and knowledge. It is a shame there are some caustic individuals out there that seem to get off threatening others from behind their keyboards, there is no justification for that behavior for any reason. Keep up the great work love your reviews I've learned a lot about how my favorite music is actually created.
This is a version a few years later at the legendary Austin City Lights show. It's is cleaner (as was he BTW). (Note: SRV was known to use the HEAVIEST strings. He went down a notch later on) The second half lead is insane, and the bends at the end will send you into overdrive. Just for you. ruclips.net/video/wgIB1OL09H0/видео.html
I subscribed to this channel almost purely for the reasons that--1--this channel doesn't pretend to lie about a songs strengths and weaknesses. DH simply gives his honest and objective thoughts. I certainly don't agree with every score, but he good thing is that DH gives well thought out reasons for why, and he doesn't allow the genres he prefers to get top scores, his criteria can be applied to all genres. I've found myself being entirely to subjective when approaching songs and have as a result shut myself off from a variety of styles that if i looked at honestly and non-biasedly, i may just end up enjoying. Im trying this with metal---slowly--and i've come to appreciate a number of points that David has made about composition and arrangement. The 2cnd reason is that this channell, including the comment section seems overall very clean and civil. And heres the secret--it starts with the leader
Find the interview on RUclips with his guitar tech Rene Martinez. He explains Steve's use of heavy strings and the damage they did to his fingers. It's a very interesting and informative piece. New subscriber here.
I get a LOT of hatred as well for all kinds of things. And similarly, i'm also being honest and not causing any harm by doing so. For example, I don't have kids either and i've had people tell me that i'm incapable of love and my love is in vain and invalid because of it. What?!?! 😠 some people..i swear. I have also criticized certain bands and artists that I genuinely dislike, and I get words like, "awful" "terrible", and ones that I can't even repeat used to describe me as a person. I don't know what's wrong with people. That's the problem with society in general. Funny thing is, it's usually only online, nobody ever says those things to my face. I don't think they would despite them saying so. Pathetic. Anyways, just saying I feel your pain, DH.
Loved your critique. I concur with your assessment of his vocals, SRV's complete knowledge of his guitar, and awesomeness of the rhythm section (Double Trouble is fantastic!). One thing, though... I'd absolutely give SRV two-tenths of a point more... to take the score to a solid 9. Why? For those snakeskin boots, lol. How could you not mention those? The way some artists dress for the stage is done merely as an affectation, but SRV loved everything he wore. Authentic through and through. His style was as much a part of him as his relationship with his guitars. Keep up the good work you're doing with these reactions. And shame on those viewers who sent such hateful, venomous comments. Honesty is the only policy that's fair to the artist and the audience.
I subscribed to your Channel because i appreciate your honest opinions about music and i love listening to you stories and opinions keep rocking David.Your my go to reactor for music keep on keeping on.
If you love a good blues guitarist who knows his guitar, check out Jeff Healey. He and Stevie play together in a couple of videos also, but his solo work is amazing too.
Yeah Satriani is also amazing at Bends. He's way up there in my book when it comes to String Bending. However, Satch doesn't use 13 gauge strings like SRV did. Satch had always used 9 until he joined the band Chickenfoot around 2008 and then switched to 10 gauge strings with his guitar tuned half a step down which he continues to do to this day,
Also, quite the opposite. Stevie didn’t okay lighter gauge. He played heavier, his guitar tech Rene Martinez said than when he met Stevie, Stevie had his guitars set up with .13 on the high E. He recalls Stevie literally having to crazy clue his skin back on to keep playing, eventually Rene figured out a set that wasn’t as heavy but sounded good because Stevie was afraid of sacrificing tone for more comfortable playing. But even then the high e was an .11
If I recall right he's playing with ..13s actually, I remember reading that somewhere. As an answer on what David is talking about around 23:00 and further
I've been reading in the comments that he actually used .013 gauge strings...which at the time I believe were the heaviest gauge strings you could get for guitar. Then he would detune down a half step in order to make the bending easier. It makes sense, I didn't even thing about detuning being a possibility.
9:35 - To me, those who can take the cover in a completely different direction without defacing the original are a notch above the rest. Everytime I think of this, two covers immediately come to my mind: DEVO's cover of (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction and Bauhaus' cover of Telegram Sam.
I love SRV but anyone stupid enough to give death threats after someone giving honest criticism are a damn disgrace and i love SRV but i like hearing DH's opinions.
If you want to hear the different side of "Lovebites", check "Dancing with the devil". It's a great underrated song from them. here is the link ruclips.net/video/mJGgLFTPME8/видео.html
How does he transition... if you know your instrument inside & out... actually, if you just apply basic logic: He simply swings it out to his left. vis a vis: Occam's Razor.
1. Stevie Ray Vaughan didn’t play just one kind of strings Like most guitarists, SRV experimented with different string gauges throughout the course of his career (even going as high as .017s at one point!), but for the most part, he stuck with a high E of .013 2. He didn’t play “standard” .013s In most cases, a standard set of .013 gauge strings is as follows: .013 - .017 - .026w - .036 - .046 - .056 Thing is, SRV didn’t play a wound third. (Could you imagine playing his licks with a wound third? You’d have to have fingers like Thor.)
I appreciate a guitarists honest opinion. Sorry about the threats. Probably some 14 year olds, terrible creatures. His Austin City Limits version comes across a lot more polished.
There's been a lot of 9's from a lot of different bands. Off the top of my head Tool, Nightiwsh, Radiohead, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Skillet, Babymetal, LOVEBITES, Pearl Jam, Band-Maid, The Warning, Bruce Springsteen, just to name a few.
I've heard a theory on covers (from Sharlee D'angelo) and it's that if you're going to play it live then keep it close to the original. If you're going to record it, then make it yours. As if you wrote it.
Nice Reaction! Could you do a Metallica or Megadeth reaction next? For Metallica I suggest "The Judas Kiss" and Megadeth "Holy Wars". Have a great day!
Hey, Dave. Sorry to hear your SRV story. More rabid than Nightwish fans, eh? I love SRV, but come on! Death threats? Unreal. Enjoyed your react. Peace.
Fuck those people david, i was blown away by srv not too long ago, I delved a bit in the community and found out how cult-ish they are and how they get critique as a sin not just an offense. Its unfortunate what happened to you, and its fine by me and all the other fans imo if u don't do any srv vids. After all you do what you feel like doing and im here for you and your reaction and especially your excellent analysis. Keep rollin'.
Good reaction. I do not agree with most of your scoring or share your music taste, but i respect your honesty and genuineness. Do you have a list of your top scoring reactions? I would like to know what you consider to be amazing.
Fandom, itself, is a little crazy! It requires a certain suspension of self-control. This abandonment is important to the fan's sense of participation, which informs his pleasure. The problem is self-control is an all-or-nothing thing--you're either doing it or you're not. Similarly, "abandonment" isn't something you can do just a little bit--yeah, like pregnancy, you know? My media production training has, in a way, ruined the media experience for me, as the habit of analysis interferes with the immediate experience. But that's ok with me...I appreciate a little distance--too much immediacy provides a compulsion I don't enjoy. I don't value the loss of self-control positively.
Has this song been suggested/in the queue? There's some showmanship here that you might like by Matt Bellamy from Muse - Time is Running out Glastonbury 2004: ruclips.net/video/Oy_OogfGN6g/видео.html Keep up the good work, really enjoying your take on what other people have in taste in music compared to yourself.
David. I can't believe the crap you took. Everyone wants to deify SRV instead of realizing he practiced all day every day at his craft. EVERYTHING was easy for a guy who worked as hard as he did. AND Tommy Shannon killed the bass.
play the guitar with your top teeth,it freaks them out bird says, thats the kat who plays guitar with his his teeth hey baby, been done before, jimi showed me the way wrap your lips round this baby...
Shocked to see you do srv again… shocked As far as his bends go… i dont know his preferred gauge… but i think about 90% of the time he tuned down to D#.
Haha. Getting heat from uttering an opinion, (and a funny one). Where has the world gone? These people can't tolerate jack. They must have complicated lives. Imagine being married to one...😅
I'm sorry to hear you were harassed over a review, but it's well know that the internet can be a toxic environment. remember the quote by Einstein. I know Stevie Ray-Vaughn is an awesome guitar player so I was curious what he would make of this song. He did not disappoint, he did the song justice. That said, I missed the dark tone that Jimi put in his version and I also missed the innovative sounds he put in. The sounds that are like predecessors of what would later become metal. (if that makes sense to you)
He doesn't need to look at his hands or strings. He closes his eyes and goes to his happy place. That's what's important.
Srv was one of those guitarist that sang more with his guitar rather than his voice. He's a goat
Stevie used real heavy strings - . 013 (high E) to . 058 or even . 060 (low E). But he tuned down a half-step to make them easier to play.
Not exactly. He did it to get the best tone
Yup he did, as his most of his music producers and record studio engineers told. From there we get the unique non - replicable sound of his guitar!
Sorry to hear you got threats like that. Unbelievably cruel. You got my support whenever you need it man. Really appreciate your reactions and honesty. I always look forward to your channel. Thanks and best wishes.

Stevie actually used 13's tuned down half step.
Tommy Shannon is a BEAST on the BASS GUITAR. He's always laying down the perfect GROOVE for Stevie. 💯🔥
SRV"s cover of Jimmy's LITTLE WING is awesome. ✌️
The cool thing a about SRV and Jimi is, they both improvised so much, both most times didn't play a song twice the same way and that is what makes them both the greatest
Oh, and the Little Wing from El Macambo is nearly unbelievable.

Wow I thought I would never see a SRV reaction after the controversy last time 😂 props for keeping it real 👍 btw great score
That was a great review in my opinion, love your critique of the Legend.
insane
I like that SRV does his own thing with this tune and stays true to the original.
Strange how you would get so much hate from SRV fans, SRV always preached love your fellow human.
Unfortunately in this day and age, now it's "Love your fellow human, as long as they agree with your point of view"
OMG, love Stevie, I have no idea who might do that
There is no excuse for anyone to make such inhuman threats. Good on u ,Open ears leads to balanced soul. 🙏🏽R I P SRV
DAVID THE EQUATIONS HAD ME ROLLING 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
David DOUBLE TROUBLE never gets the RESPECT that they deserve. ✌️
The amazing thing Stevie was doing those bins with 13 strings and he's been as high as 17

Van Halen - 5150 (Live 1986 in New Haven, Connecticut)
That video probably has everything - positive energy, showmanship.
When i was younger i always thought the main riff sounded like pj "even flow" riff, then i read that Mike mccready based it on srv style
So glad you got back to SRV. Sorry that you took so much unjustified heat befoe
Stevie used to use 12s and 13s so alot heavier than you thought unnatural strength that man had

Please do Pride and Joy by SRV! It is such a good song, some of the best guitarplaying I've heard
That's my favorite, could play it on an endless loop.
Yeah Satriani is also amazing at Bends. He's way up there in my book when it comes to String Bending. However, Satch doesn't use 13 gauge strings like SRV did. Satch had always used 9 until he joined the band Chickenfoot around 2008 and then switched to 10 gauge strings with his guitar tuned half a step down which he continues to do to this day,
He has.13 strings till closely to his end cause it ripped of his fingers, superglued them for shows.
As an answer on what David is talking about around 23:00 and further
i heard billy gibbons say he could not believe how heavy stevie ray vaughns strings were
I've been reading in the comments that he actually used .013 gauge strings...which at the time I believe were the heaviest gauge strings you could get for guitar. Then he would detune down a half step in order to make the bending easier. It makes sense, I didn't even thing about detuning being a possibility.
Check out his song Look at Little Sister from Austin, TX. Smoothest guitar switch after breaking a string!
Best live version at Austin City Limits👍
9:35 - To me, those who can take the cover in a completely different direction without defacing the original are a notch above the rest. Everytime I think of this, two covers immediately come to my mind: DEVO's cover of (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction and Bauhaus' cover of Telegram Sam.
Hi David, I have read somewhere that SRV used 13 gauge strings, he had strong hands. I am no expert on this.
Yeah, 13 gauge, not hands but massive machine-hands.
RIP SRV…..Side note- Just by RadioHead would be great to get your perspective on, the guitar playing is phenomenal!
13's back down to 11's or 10's because they were literally shredding his fingertips to the point he had to superglue them back on.
I love SRV but anyone stupid enough to give death threats after someone giving honest criticism are a damn disgrace and i love SRV but i like hearing DH's opinions.
Vaughan runs circles around Hendrix. Not even close. Hendrix was often sloppy live
If you want to hear the different side of "Lovebites", check "Dancing with the devil". It's a great underrated song from them. here is the link ruclips.net/video/mJGgLFTPME8/видео.html
pathetic little people who can't even handle criticism. i'm really sorry you had to deal with shit like that.
How does he transition... if you know your instrument inside & out... actually, if you just apply basic logic: He simply swings it out to his left. vis a vis: Occam's Razor.
He never played the song the same way twice he does not play note for not just the feel of the original with his own variation
Este hombre es el número uno.🎸
1. Stevie Ray Vaughan didn’t play just one kind of strings
Like most guitarists, SRV experimented with different string gauges throughout the course of his career (even going as high as .017s at one point!), but for the most part, he stuck with a high E of .013
2. He didn’t play “standard” .013s
In most cases, a standard set of .013 gauge strings is as follows:
.013 - .017 - .026w - .036 - .046 - .056
Thing is, SRV didn’t play a wound third. (Could you imagine playing his licks with a wound third? You’d have to have fingers like Thor.)
I appreciate a guitarists honest opinion. Sorry about the threats. Probably some 14 year olds, terrible creatures. His Austin City Limits version comes across a lot more polished.
Nice reaction! Keep being honest!
Geeez
great reaction....have you had a 9 reaction and if so who was it ...I would love to compare it using all your requirments....thanks
@@THEDavidHeretic thats all I have to know about your ability to judge talent...honest opion
Check out "leave my girl alone" probably his best vocals and no playing behind the back. This would probably be your safest reaction to srv. Ha
Dave- you say that playing behind your back is not difficult, but how hard is it to sing AND play behind your back?
If you know your instrument inside and out like he clearly does, it's honestly not that different than playing in front of you and singing.
Stevie unhooked his strap at the base of the guitar then reconnected behind his back. I saw that on a different video.
About his bends he did that with 13s and 11s at the lightest
I've heard a theory on covers (from Sharlee D'angelo) and it's that if you're going to play it live then keep it close to the original. If you're going to record it, then make it yours. As if you wrote it.
If you hate long intro's you would hate the cover of Deep purple's" Lazy" by Joe Bonamassa and Jimmy Barnes, but brilliant cover.
Nice Reaction! Could you do a Metallica or Megadeth reaction next? For Metallica I suggest "The Judas Kiss" and Megadeth "Holy Wars". Have a great day!
A definite SRV original live must is Riviera Paradise live Austin City Limits
React to Gary Moore Live already, Jesus...! Also, you can see Mike McCready playing the solo in Alive live on Jules Holand.
It might be good for you listen to Wings of Pegasus , he has a lot of info on Steve Ray …. Thanks for your show
He’s well known for playing 13s, hurts my fingers just thinking about it
I knoooooooooow that makes my fingers want to start bleeding without even touching them.
Dang man! Srv is awesome for sure but that is crazy you got all that just by voicing your feelings. Not everyone has the same opinions!
Great version I also like the version by Gary Moore and a band called the Hampsters
Good
Good reaction. I do not agree with most of your scoring or share your music taste, but i respect your honesty and genuineness. Do you have a list of your top scoring reactions? I would like to know what you consider to be amazing.
Well the top score so far is Nightwish - Ghost Love Score with a 9.8
Wanna look to the guitar virtuoso? Look to Van Halen or Yngwie Malmsteen)))
Lol youbare so funny

Everyone does this song but nobody ever does the Hendrix version.
If you want a dope bass line check out NO BODY KNOWS. Band of gypsies
Has this song been suggested/in the queue?
There's some showmanship here that you might like by Matt Bellamy from Muse - Time is Running out Glastonbury 2004:

Keep up the good work, really enjoying your take on what other people have in taste in music compared to yourself.
David. I can't believe the crap you took. Everyone wants to deify SRV instead of realizing he practiced all day every day at his craft. EVERYTHING was easy for a guy who worked as hard as he did. AND Tommy Shannon killed the bass.
play the guitar with your top teeth,it freaks them out
bird says, thats the kat who plays guitar with his his teeth
hey baby, been done before, jimi showed me the way
wrap your lips round this baby...
Shocked to see you do srv again… shocked
As far as his bends go… i dont know his preferred gauge… but i think about 90% of the time he tuned down to D#.
13 gauge strings
Haha. Getting heat from uttering an opinion, (and a funny one). Where has the world gone? These people can't tolerate jack. They must have complicated lives. Imagine being married to one...😅
Wrong. Stevie did not play "light strings". He used heavy strings...as hopefully you know by now...
Dave I give you a 9.4 good job, it should be higher but like you say there has to be room for improvement!
FEELIN' YOU Trigg!!! There's always room for improvement in everything.
