I've been on a richard manuel kick tonight... (and a The Band kick for a while..) but it does make me feel many emotions when you think of his voice still being around, or even a bit longer then it was. Richard Manuel is an all time great singer and just great listening to. Lovely
Amazing feeling I every time I hear it. That sweet and softly spoken lyrics by Richard and that screeching guitar from Robbie. It's sad how it all ended but I love them each equally. They played a huge part in my childhood in Ireland in the 80's, all thanks to my Dad
The Band died to me when Richard Manuel died. Sure the Last Waltz was the end but no Reunion of the Band can ever be complete without Richard Manuel even though Rick, Robbie, Garth and Levon were still alive after he died. RIP Richard
The Band was blessed with three great voices. Robbie may have written the songs but Richard Rick and Levon made those songs soar. Richard sings this with so much heart.
Richard is one of the all time great vocals. This and Ray Charles are my favorite versions. Any band would have given to have Richard, Levon or Rick singing in their band.
I am so very thankful that Kevin turned me on to acid and music so many years ago. "I'd like to say thanks on behalf of the group and myself" The Band and all it's members, I thank you
What would become one of the most famous pictures, Richard sitting at his piano grasping his mic with his eyes closed, was left out of the most famous concert films. Why? This is Richard doing what he did best, and the only way to view it is a black and white video on RUclips. Such a shame.
I too have been on a The Band kick. I have loved The Band since I first heard "Up on cripple Creek", when I was in my twenties and living in New York City. I had almost finished Robbie Robertson's book Testimony, when I heard he passed away. Since then I have been listening to many of their songs again, especially the one from "The Last Waltz", I like RIchard's voice, but my favorite is Rick Danko, especially his emotional and soulful "It makes no difference". Robbie was a great song writer and guitar player, but did not have a voice like Rick, Levon or Richard.
There is no better vocal on any song - ever - any song (I don't care what genre you're looking at). The pleading, the demanding in this vocal. Richard struggled and it came out as great art. I hope you found your peace brother.
The Band is still the best band on God's green earth. And Richard was immortal. I mean to out Ray Charles on quite possibly his signature song is saying something! Truth?
I can't believe they didn't include this recording in "The Last Waltz" it's incredible! Martin Scorcese also wanted to leave out Muddy Waters but wisely one cameraman didn't obey him and kept rolling capturing Muddy Waters incredible performance.
@@TeleCaster66 No, Scorsese told them to turn off camera's to let them cool down but then freaked out when he heard how amazing Muddy was. You can see Scorsese halfway through his song in backround freaking out to make camera men to turn camera's on.
Can anyone tell me when and how he passed away. . my dad told me that there is only one band that he likes and thats the band. . im so glad he played this music when i was growing up. With the soul and heart these guys played with i hope to play them to my kids someday.
I found somewhere with google that Richard drank up to 7 bottles of coqnac a day and because of that he could no longer sing the very high notes he was famous for so he hung himself after a concert. " I shall be released" Richard voice, very high here . Some versions even LW maybe he was heavy in the drink and couldn't hit the high notes .He he does... ruclips.net/video/LUH_BLKdFPQ/видео.html
He committed suicide(by hanging) after a show in Winterpark Florida. March 4th 1986. It was Grand Marnier that he drank so much of. Anyway, he had been in Levons room up until 2am that morning talking and he went back to his own room. He snuggled in with his wife and when she woke up the next morning he was gone, she thought he was passed out on the your bus and went and got breakfast. When she returned to the room and went into the bathroom she found him hanging from the shower rod. He had struggled with alcoholism and heroin for a long time but had got clean in the every late 70's. He began drinking and using again when The Band went back out on the road, minus Robbie Robertson. He had been very depressed that they weren't even selling out bars anymore when they used to sell out arenas. I mean, they headlined at wood stock for Petes sakes. Anyway, that's what happened. I hope I answered everything :)
Apes Fergs I visited the Cheek to Cheek lounge in Winter Park on a family trip back in the 90’s; this was the venue that they played the night of Richard’s suicide. The place wasn’t quite a sh*thole, but it was far from their glory days. The Quality Inn where he killed himself is right next door. The staff claimed not to have a clue that he had killed himself there. I haven’t been to Stratford to pay my respects at his gravesite; my wife and I were in Toronto a couple summers ago and drove within 30 miles on the way home, but I was sick and just wanted to get home.
I fell like Martin Scorsese was like this movie needs more cowbell and also by cowbell I mean Robbie. But no one got that reference because that SNL skit would not be a thing for a couple decades.
Interesting how the recording that was used for this video had a hum like an instrument cord was left laying on the stage with the line on the mixer turned on. Somewhere there is a bootleg of the whole concert recording which from what I understand is still the only way to hear this song aside from this video.
No, Muddy Waters was suppose to get the same treatment as this but some wise cameraman said fukk that I'm catching Muddy Waters historical performance!
This footage appears to have been taken at The Last Waltz held Thanksgiving Day 1976 at WinterLAND in San Francisco. "Georgia" was left off of both the 1978 and 2002 albums/CDs. Thanks for uploading! Was great to see it.
Lol, Robbie here, is just as important as Richard.. his unique skills suit this tune particularly well. Some of my favorite fills by Robbie actually.. extremely tasteful..

Ha! Same with me over the last few days! Richard Manuel in particular! I really love him singing, "King Harvest (must surely come)".
Xtho7999- whispering pines...😪💙
Man Richard had boat loads of empathy in his singing voice.

So passionate
Richard was one of the greatest pure singers ever. Alcohol and heroin took him from us way too soon.
Had no idea he played this at The Last Waltz. Thank you for sharing

"No peace I find." Makes me want to cry. No peace he found.

Can't believe this was cut , thanks for posting.
What lovely soulful voice he had 🎶
I can sorta see the sadness in Richards eyes and hear the sadness in his voice. I hope he has finally found his peace, R.I.P❤️
He certainly has all at peace in eternal life!

Definitely I have only just found thus gem
Imagine taking this out of the Last Waltz and leaving in Neil Diamond? This should have been a mortal sin.

Absolutely Fabulous.

Amazing voice. RIP

Jeopardy sent me here and I found this jewel!
Richard sings with great emotion......
I was suprised by the sound quality!
Love the band
He was awesome.
Damn does he ever sound like Ray Charles here! What an amazing singer Richard was.
This was just on Jeopardy as the final question; all the contestants, as well as me, missed it.
That's what I'm doing here! Why was this left off The Last Waltz?!?
@@missjoshemmett Did you win "Final Jeopardy"? I was rooting for the grocery clerk from Maine.

I guessed The Night they Drove Old Dixie Down. I got the Carter part right. 🥴
The story of Richard Manuel is a tragic one

not better than Ray, but a fine rendition
Without Ray- this would be very different- it's almost identical- lol- great but Richard attributed his version to Ray
jurasicfred amen
Very rarely can one add that a version of a song offers the singer immediate entrance into the pantheon of immortals.

he had serious stage fright. Hence the song he wrote.
Robbie and Rick were still pretty boys. Richard wasn't. But he was still the best voice.
This is from the Last Waltz except it's not in the film. It's on the best of The Band though, sure it's this version.
cryin' shame this was left out of the film. no white man before or since has done better justice to this ray charles classic!
I think Richard sang this better than Ray Charles himself. This is incredible!

Richard sang this song better than anyone ever but Robbie's little riffs aren't bad they actually make it a little better.
I was hoping for a full blown epic guitar solo from Robbie with pinched harmonics and tremolo picking aplenty
