- During the 2019 Drive Experience track day by Davide Cironi at Autodromo di Modena, my friends Davide458Italia, Italiansupercarvideo and I recorded this Lancia Delta S4 Group B. The car is driven by Marco Gramenzi, who was kind enough to allow us to put a GoPro inside his rally monster. What to say... A little dream come true!

Epic turbo & supercharged I think.back in the days when you really had to drive a car
the system is all pneumatic managed, no electronics for that, only the ECU for injectors and ignition
Fun fact: the union of a turbo and a supercharger is called a twin charger. Lancia was the first to fit one is a car and got the most power out of every engine, developing almost the same push as a twin turbo but without turbo lag and having more torque on the low revs

There is the story that Henri Toivonnen set a time on the Estoril circuit in 1986 whith the S4 which was fast enough to be in the top ten times of formula 1 test times in that year on that circuit. (Imagine a rally car beating some formula 1 cars on a racetrack)

perhaps in the rain but not in the dry. 80's f1 cars were still the most fastest track cars (by lap time) by far
guys: you have to keep in mind that the >1000hp of the F1 cars were only possible during qualifying. ->Only for short periods of time. The same is true for the S4 and other Group B cars. For a short amount of time they too could put out way more than their "usual around 500hp. Also keep in mind that the weight difference was not as big between the F1 and rallye cars as it is today. The turbo F1 cars were at 690kg minimum weight and the S4 was at 890kg empty weight (NA F1 cars were allowed to weigh less)
Both cars had manual transmissions and no traction control.(It was the 80s!) Tires from the 80's... awd and slicks on a S4 are advantageous in accelleration up to 100kph and out of corners. (On Gravel a S4 as well as a quattro were clocked at 2.4 -2,5 s for 0-100 kph Todays F1 cars are not much faster on tarmac with all the electronics and modern tires)

The "boosted" 800 + hp Delta S4 was clocked on asphalt doing 0 to 100 kmh in 2.08 seconds and 0 to 200 in 6.1sec, just insane

Hi Bozzy. This Lancia Delta S4 is a beast unleashed!💪😠 What an awesome opportunity to get so up close and personal with this car and its driver. I love watching this thing rip up the track, but the in-car footage really gives the sense of urgency these monsters bring! After that first big pull around 1:17 , the excitement on the passenger's face was priceless.😀 Cool to watch and listen, but I'm sure the actual experience will never be forgotten. dicevano che alla fine dell'era gruppo B non lo sapeva quasi nessuno quanta potenza aveva, nemmeno nel team, andava a plutonio :D ....ingestibile, ancora "peggio" la Turbo 16 che era più piccola
Mi dispiace contraddirti,ma la peggiore era invece L' S4.
A differenza del Turbo 16 e dell' S1,lei tirava sempre,mentre le altre due avevano un range limitato.
Comunque il T16 non era poi mica tanto piccolo,aveva il difetto che era sbilanciata nei pesi,pesava più a sinistra che a destra per via del motore trasversale(sempre meglio dell' S1 che aveva il motore a sbalzo),però questa cosa la penalizzava parecchio rispetto all'S4,naturalmente in mano a quei 4 o 5 extraterrestri che le guidavano all'epoca.......
@@mondinogabriele3893 grazie per la re-infarinata :D solo che non ho capito perchè era la S4 ad essere la "peggiore", il volumetrico può dare coppia ma se c'è un rettilineo non cambia molto, anzi, avendo un motore meno "brusco" (anche se incontenibile) era più prevedibile... la S1 era un aBBorto, non gli interessava molto ai tempi magari... la dimensione della macchina (non il peso) conta molto, se vedi le ultime GT1 sono enormi, ora non vado a controllare ma non penso che per la T16 abbiano fatto una 205 più grande in generale :D
@@redoverdrivetheunstoppable4637 Io come peggiore la intendo in senso buono,era la più potente di tutte le altre,ma era molto molto difficile da guidare proprio per la sua potenza esagerata,avendo sempre il motore in tiro,e come dice anche il suo papà motoristico,l'ing.Lombardi,si comportava come se fosse un aspirato,non aveva dei vuoti come invece le sue avversarie.
Mi sembra che l'S1 aveva poche centinaia di giri di "buono",prima e dopo poco o niente,il T16 era già molto meglio dell'S1.
In Abarth avevano preso i difetti delle altre e li avevano trasformati in punti di forza per loro,il problema era stare dietro alla macchina nel guidarla.In un intervista Walter Rohrl aveva dichiarato che su quelle macchine lì si passava l'80% del tempo a frenare e il 20% ad accelerare,sui WRC di oggi è il contrario
Motore a sbalzo l s4??? Ma che stai a di?? Comunque a detta dei piloti dell epoca, la più guidabile era proprio la t16 per via di un assetto più neutro, non rollava come la s4. Audi si che aveva il motore quasi a sbalzo anteriore che la rendeva terribilmente sottosterzante. Il difetto piu grande della s4 erano le tarature dei differenziali, non avendo esperienza pregressa di 4wd in lancia all inizio non avevano idea di come tararli ( e biasion nello sviluppo fu cruciale). Con le tarature sballate la s4 tirava dove voleva lei (e sulle stradine del Corsica o del Montecarlo posso solo immaginare cosa potesse essere guidare un mezzo del genere). A livello di potenza nell 86, si parla di 600 cv per Audi , 550 cv per peugeot e circa 560 nell ultima versione usata all Olympus da alen. In configurazione normale l s4 disponeva di circa 480 cv, con possibilità di aumentare per pochi secondi la pressione del turbo per portarla a circa 530, ma con difficoltà di guida nel passaggio dal volumex al kkk per via della troppa differenza di pressione tra gli stessi. Comunque nelle prime gare del mondiale tenevano il motore a circa 430, 460 cv per non spaccare tutto, dato la scarsa affidabilità

huh?! Where did you get that? Faster than the audi in accelaration true, but handling no way...S4 is a feather that trys to kill you everytime, while S1 quattro is much more stable compared (it trys to kill you too)!
@@MetallvmPT S4 much more stage/rally wins compared to S1Q. Physics - S4 is built like a pure race car from the ground up, mid engine, tube frame, much better weight distribution, lighter weight, etc. Quattro S1 in comparison was heavy pig, built on a regular car boady, with horrible engine placment - before the front axle, it had the power and awesome sound, but that's about it... It was uncompetitive (results proves it) in later group B days 85'/86' Audi knew it, but it was to late...
@@r129r16pfl Ehhhh we were talking about handling and not wins, rally stages bla bla bla! Ik that and yea on that you r right! But handling itself alone on the audi is better! We are talking about specific stats and not racing! You mentioned Handling not race wins! S4 definitly faster BUT HARDER to handle in comparison to AUDI thats my only point here! S4 is way harder to maintain "straight" on a stage...And this is a stupid comparison we both are making anyway lol cuz S4 came way after the AUDI so obviously S4 is better in many ways, unless Lancia were dumb wich they never were! AUDI came did its job, Peugeot came dethroned audi, than s4 came, and r200 came later but couldnt show its potential cuz group B ended...

Lancia engineers had the boost pressure on 5 bars and it put out 1000hp at one point in time. These monsters are truly amazing.
