- Winston-Salem Fire Chief Trey Mayo couldn't hold back tears when talking about the dedication of his firefighters and the emotional toll of the decisions his team has had to make during the Winston Weaver fertilizer plant fire.
“It was reassuring when the ammonium nitrate subject matter expert arrived yesterday…and I said, ‘Shoot me straight. If you’d have been here Monday night what would we have done different?’ And he said, ‘Absolutely nothing.’ He said - I get a little bit emotional about it - he said, ‘The decisions you all have made are exactly what we would have done if you had had me here the whole time.’ I’m confident in those decisions and proud of the work our folks have done this week," Mayo said during a Thursday afternoon press conference.
He obviously cares about the community he serves very much which signifies a great leader. God Bless you sir! Thank you for your service!!
Good job, Chief!! That situation was extremely dangerous, and the decisions you had to make were difficult. You have a great deal to be proud of, and your tears are justified and heartwarming. Congratulations on a job well done!

Great job ya'll. Lessons learned the hard way. I was there the night after the West, TX and it was surreal.
The thought of him spending all of these days questioning himself.. wondering if he was even doing the right thing… to be told he did it right.. I’m in tears too.. Great Job Chief!! So thankful for you
Chief Mayo is the man! Now it’s time for the city leaders to hand over a blank check so he can make his fire department whole
That was intense
It's the people who own the plant who are responsible for the pollution hazard that should pay. Putting people in harms way.
