Actually I think the OP is correct. The ship did break apart above the water, but they believe that a section of the bottom Hull was still attached and the bow pulled the stern section down with it. I believe it has been theorised that the stern section might have been able to remain afloat had the bow fully detached at the moment of breaking.

@@rayzermaniac5218 that theory is outdated. It’s no longer believed that the double bottom held the bow and stern together, and pulled the stern vertical.
Many theories indicate that the keel was the first to fail during the break up. It was weakened by the stress, then as the ship breaks it’s believed to have either held for a bit, or just lets go entirely. And the stern didn’t get pulled, but it flooded naturally by how it was compromised by the break up, opening areas for water to get in.
