Mike, every time I listen to you it kicks me out of my slump in wanting to go practice jazz piano. After too long of a period of time, it feels like even going to the piano and sitting down is a barrier. But your videos are a good reminder of what is possible.
Thanks for response! I think one of the special things about your playing is that it's so genuine, i mean that it's almost as if your heart and fingers have a connection, rather than going to the head first. I think your playing has definitely influenced mine! :)
Very unique approach! Loved the harmonies you put in there, I never could understand that lol. Loved the body language as well, I could tell you were really groovin'. Keep it up
Björn Freyr Björnsson interesting because he has commemted before on his love for art tatum of all people to inspire such a talented "less is more" musician. Although personally ive heard way more less is more playing than his, namely ahmad jamal, miles davis, in some cases
Hi Mike, just discovered your videos ! I don't know if I would one day be able to play as good as you play, just started piano for a month now, but you're really inspiring ! Love the way you feel the music, your faces always make me laugh ! Cheers from France
Hi Mike. Although playing on a much lower level, I've been relating to your overall approach to jazz piano for a long time. Thank you for providing your fans with a goal with every video. At what stage did that defining, jealousy-inducing expressiveness kick in? If I may add, I could imagine Dat Dere by Bobby Timmons suiting your style.
I always enjoy the feel that you put on things. Also, like keith jarret, your facial expression always looks like you smell something filthy...namely your groove ;)
Mike I thought you might find it cool to know the lick you made / played at 1:28 sounds exactly like the one nat king cole worked off of from 2:10 to 2:20 in Nat Cole Trio Body and Soul online video. Also, I ESPECIALLY love your lines from 1:39 to 1:47 :)
Just found your channel a couple of days ago - super inspiring! I've been classically trained playing piano for like 10 years now and I can read sheet music but have no idea how to go around improvising as you do - have any tips on how to get started? :) Keep up the good work mate!
Mike Makes Music by ear, do you use it to get better through stealing specific/exact licks by having perfect pitch? Perfect relative pitch? Or just by listening and letting your brain absorb vocabulary?
Hey man I absolutely enjoy your playing. What exercise you do to practice all your licks? I am a pianist too, i studied at the montreal conservatory in classical. You are sickly talented, keep it up.
Mike Makes Music I thought so, which is a compliment because you must really play through the changes and bring out chord tones for me to think they sounded similar when I wasnt paying attention to the progression. Also they really stuck out to me as cool. Btw, I really ENJOY your playing. I have so much respect for jazz pianists like art tatum, mccoy tyner, and others, but I really bang my head and JAM and SMILE when I hear your phrasing, your catchy and powerful lines, the buildup of volume, it's sooooo much more enjoyable (yet still complex) than the famous pianists we know and love.
I'll be damned if this isn't the greatest thing I've ever heard

Excellent playing, as per usual. It would be really interesting if you made a video about your general practise routine! :)
