For anyone who makes statements like "this wasn't so complicated" or the voicings are easy to play is missing the real talent here. His improvisational skills is what we all should praise. Sure many of us musicans could get a transcription and play tunes the way he does but the real question is if you could mimic his paying. The real question is could you have come up with the ideas he displays in his playing?! Especially on the fly. The man is purely gifted plain and simple. He reminds me of how ppl discredit Monk's technical abilities on the piano. There's probably tons of players on RUclips that are more technically proficient playing the piano, but this guy is truly a virtuoso in his ability to come up with these type of solos. I have never heard anyone perform Autumn Leaves like this
Sure without context yes. But Autumn leaves is almost always played in gminor or eminor and it kinda seems like he just randomly picked ebminor which is cool. Most experienced jazz pianists can play a given tune decently well in all 12 keys but to improvise with another level of sophistication in a random key is even cooler.
Yeah it’s crazy good. I’m trying to open up my mind more like this. I’ve been playing piano since a young age but classically trained so trying to venture out of the structure to explore my creative side on my own. I love piano 🔥

Terrance, you have an amazing gift. I heard so many different covers on Autumn Leaves but when I listen to your play, I am thinking of only wonderfull things that our life can offer. Your music, and the way you play is more just a piano play. No) its not from giant steps. Some subs like Am-D7 Abm-Db7 instead of Abm so third becomes the ninth and sounds more sweet. Or instead of Ebm which is tonic he uses series of m9 chords on the notes of F7. His favorites). Not too complicated but so much lyric and nuances in his playing.

Hot damn brotha you're my #1 favorite musician. YEAAAAHHH THAT'S HOW IT'S DONE. Please don't ever stop! My bro. You're the best pianist on planet earth.
Worked out the stuff at 4:17 to 5:11. Tried to add some music theory insight, but someone has done a full transcription of this. He's playing in the key of Eb minor/Gb major. At 4:17, he plays Dsus13 (you could think of that as Cmaj7 over D), then resolves the suspension to D7. This is followed by Dbsus13 which resolves to Db7, then the next really colorful chord is Gmin7 instead of the Gbmaj7 that would typically go there. They share the same 3rd (Bb) and 7th (F) and Bb is the melody note there (common tone substitution). After that he goes directly to Bmaj7. The rest of the A section uses the conventional harmonies of the song. Will edit as I figure out more. At 4:34 there's another tritone substitution. Sounds like he's about to go to Ebmin, but, SURPRISE, he goes to Asus13 which resolves to A7. Then he plays Bbmin7-Eb7#9-Abmin7. This is a secondary Bb and Eb chords are a secondary 2-5 leading to the Abmin7. After Abmin7 he goes to Db7 then another unexpected tritone substitution, C7 instead of the Gbmaj7 that would normally go there. This leads to that very gospel rundown starting on Bmaj7. He's just playing the chords of the Gb major scale (Bmaj7-Bbmin7-Abmin7-Gbmaj7-Fmin7b5). From the Fmin7b5 we go to Bb7 then Ebmaj (this is minor 2-5-1 which unexpectedly lands on Ebmaj, this is a modal substitution). From the Ebmaj he goes to Daug (D-F#-A#) then Dbmin9-Gb7-Bsus13-B7-Bbsus13-Bb7. The walk-down from Ebmaj takes us into a secondary 2-5 (Db and Gb chords) which leads to, SURPRISE, Bsus13 instead of the diatonic Bmaj7 you're expecting. That leads to the actual dominant chord, the Bb7 which is preceded by a sus chord. This leads us to the Ebmin9 tonic chord at which point he does something very cool sounding but conceptually very simple. First the chords. Starting at about 4:52, he plays Ebmin9-Cmin9-Amin9-Gbmin9. Notice that all of the chords have the same quality (min9). This is parallelism. I think there's another term for it (something about constant structure I think), but I can't think of it. Also notice that the roots of each of these chords are a minor 3rd apart. Conceptually simple, right? Then, he plays the same Bsus13-B7-Bbsus13-Bb7 again which leads back to Ebmin9 and he does the constant-structure parallel chords again. He keeps repeating this before he goes into his ending vamp.
This is a great lesson to anyone underestimating Terrence's playing. He does some beautiful stuff here. The movement from 4:17 to 4:23 was delicious...
