What makes these videos so interesting is Che Senseis knowledge of variations on the kata. Also the open minded approach. As you know many schools will not let another schools approach inside their dojos. Sadly when I studied karate and aikido this was true. Love to see the bunkai. I believe as you get older open palm strikes, blocks and grabbing are very practical. Great editing as always. I will be sending you a couple book recommenations soon.
I've never been a fan of the fundamentalist approach to martial arts - "my karate is the only karate" because we all have so much to offer each other. I loved how Aikido dovetailed with Goju Ryu, and both can learn from each other. And even in Funakoshi's book, he speaks about how it is all just one karate. I just learned this kata while up in Alaska training with Hanshi Scott and Renshi Swarthout. This in my opinion is very well presented and done. I had the opportunity to train with Chinen Sensei back in the mid 90’s, to date still one of the best training days of my karate journey. Thank u for posting this up. I have a lot to learn.

The chishi will be one of my primary tools (though I will need to craft a lighter one-or use the arsenal different sized hammers in my tool box-and build back up). I will review both chishi/hojo undo videos from this channel again soon, as well as Michael Clarke's book.

Ah, that's great! This is one of the most beautiful kata in the Goju syllabus (maybe one of the best kata in the world!) but it is a demanding kata. We know you'll get it 💪
I studied Goju-ryu with Master Glenn Keeney in Anderson, Indiana, (Bill Wallace, Ross Scott) and I'd never heard of this kata before seeing this video. I've never heard of a kata that allows for so much variation in interpretation and movement. I'm not sure how you would even begin to score it in competition. But it's definitely a show stopper with many advanced ideas, including disarming a swordsman and killing him with his own sword! Very cool stuff!

Thank you very much for the video. I learned a lot from it as well as from the bunkai video and other videos. I found a lot of answers to things I was wondering about, but now during the coronavirus I had no one to ask (closed borders). I wasn't sure of my interpretation, these were just my guesses. As for Kururunfa, I assumed that I would do it now just 1000 times (about 200 left) and then go to Seisan, which I will do the same number. And then I will repeat it with Suparinpei. It is important to me that, until I get old, I want to know the specifics of each kata, which ones of them fit me, be able to perform them all in full power and flexibility, and understand as much of what is in them as possible. I know from my own experience that a honing of one kata and its content is a huge job. I put a lot of work into practicing kata and bunkai in general. Especially Saifa and Sanseru, which suit me the most and which I especially like. I know 1000 is not much, but it's good, too. Maybe there will be chance to do more after.
This is 100% the attitude we love to see! You are right that we do need to find out which kata works for us, and at which point in our lives. Right now, I am really enjoying Shisochin (this is Zoe the editor) but Ché's favourite kata is Seipai. The one good thing to come out of the pandemic was the shattering of geography's control over us - it forced karate forward into the future, as instructors learned to give online classes and share knowledge more freely. We would never have gotten around to our channel if our dojo hadn't been forcibly shut. You are on the right path, and we are so glad you are sharing it with us.
Great Video as usual. Sensei Chinen did his Kururunfa (and all his other kata) with a smoothness and grace that was unique to himself. I learnt so much just by watching his kata. At circa 4:00, the first and second move - I think the small arm movement was something common from early times because when we watch videos of students of Miyagi Chojun do this move, they tend to do it with a quick and small circular movement, with forearm quite close to body, ie emphasis was on the elbow pushing downwards/outwards. The two big schools that push their forearms outwards were Meibukan (Yagi being a very early Miyagi student and did some of his kata with some differences) and Shitoryu (Mabuni classified all hand movements in all of their 60+ katas that look like a shito uke - as a shito-uke). So we can use this arm position as a marker to guess if a student's lineage was Meibukan or not. By and large Goju-ryu teaches the opening move with elbow pointing down & outwards and forearm inclined back towards one's chest. 4:35 After the second lower kick, Sensei Che brought his kicking foot back to his supporting leg, then he made a small circular movement to step outwards - that's a Chinen Sensei detail. IOGKF (Higaonna Morio Sensei) teaches bringing the foot back then stepping forward as well, but to bring it back, almost set the foot down onto the ground then draw a circle with the foot to step forward, that's truly Chinen Sensei's lineage. Circa 7:55 some lineages will emphasize a downward whip, some will also say the sinking down to cat-stance should coincide with the arm movement. It's supposed to enhance the arm-suppression action. 13:40 There's a backward head-butt somewhere there. And some schools emphasize a quick back arch just before the drop to Shiko-dachi, basically a Chinkuchi using the back/spinal muscle to break a bear hug, then a backward head-butt at Shiko-dachi. Thank you for this video Sensei Che, because it's always good to revisit the Kururunfa kata by looking at various different ways different schools do it, because the GOOD differences enrich our understanding of the kata and its possibilities.
Truly you are a conniseur of kata! I'm sorry I never got to train with Sensei Chinen - by all accounts, he was a superb teacher. We have some of his DVDs, and the grace of his movements rings clear. Ché at least continues to keep some of his teacher's knowledge alive, and this is much easier to follow than a book of kata! I really love this kata - it will be my next grading kata when I head to yon dan in a few years, so I look forward to spending much time with it. - Zoë

This was a tricky video to edit in terms of camera angle and field, but Ché himself requires very little in the way of editing and tidying up, compared to my videos
On the body weight drop with the back to the camera at the end of the kata (the sword drop) low baseball catcher’s stance I’ve always been curious why this isn’t a lower/wider than normal Shiko-dachi stance. A wider base would add more balance and power. Thoughts? My gratitude from Austin, TX
Hi, Jett! Great question - couple of points to cover. 1) The classical bunkai is the throw, and if you're throwing someone from directly behind you in shikodachi but over your shoulder, you'll likely fall forward with them. The haunched position also suggests one knee on the ground after throwing the person, ready to smash the face/ears with the palm strikes. 2) My preferred application is the armbar over the shoulder to snap the arm at the elbow. The throw feels more like a compliance throw than a realistic application, but like all classical bunkai, it is there as a starting point for further research. Hope this answers your question! Thank you very much for the video. I learned a lot from it as well as from the bunkai video and other videos. I found a lot of answers to things I was wondering about, but now during the coronavirus I had no one to ask (closed borders). I wasn't sure of my interpretation, these were just my guesses. As for Kururunfa, I assumed that I would do it now just 1000 times (about 200 left) and then go to Seisan, which I will do the same number. And then I will repeat it with Suparinpei. It is important to me that, until I get old, I want to know the specifics of each kata, which ones of them fit me, be able to perform them all in full power and flexibility, and understand as much of what is in them as possible. I know from my own experience that a honing of one kata and its content is a huge job. I put a lot of work into practicing kata and bunkai in general. Especially Saifa and Sanseru, which suit me the most and which I especially like. I know 1000 is not much, but it's good, too. Maybe there will be chance to do more after.
This is 100% the attitude we love to see! You are right that we do need to find out which kata works for us, and at which point in our lives. Right now, I am really enjoying Shisochin (this is Zoe the editor) but Ché's favourite kata is Seipai.
The one good thing to come out of the pandemic was the shattering of geography's control over us - it forced karate forward into the future, as instructors learned to give online classes and share knowledge more freely. We would never have gotten around to our channel if our dojo hadn't been forcibly shut.

Great Video as usual. Sensei Chinen did his Kururunfa (and all his other kata) with a smoothness and grace that was unique to himself. I learnt so much just by watching his kata.
At circa 4:00, the first and second move - I think the small arm movement was something common from early times because when we watch videos of students of Miyagi Chojun do this move, they tend to do it with a quick and small circular movement, with forearm quite close to body, ie emphasis was on the elbow pushing downwards/outwards. The two big schools that push their forearms outwards were Meibukan (Yagi being a very early Miyagi student and did some of his kata with some differences) and Shitoryu (Mabuni classified all hand movements in all of their 60+ katas that look like a shito uke - as a shito-uke). So we can use this arm position as a marker to guess if a student's lineage was Meibukan or not. By and large Goju-ryu teaches the opening move with elbow pointing down & outwards and forearm inclined back towards one's chest.
4:35 After the second lower kick, Sensei Che brought his kicking foot back to his supporting leg, then he made a small circular movement to step outwards - that's a Chinen Sensei detail. IOGKF (Higaonna Morio Sensei) teaches bringing the foot back then stepping forward as well, but to bring it back, almost set the foot down onto the ground then draw a circle with the foot to step forward, that's truly Chinen Sensei's lineage.
Circa 7:55 some lineages will emphasize a downward whip, some will also say the sinking down to cat-stance should coincide with the arm movement. It's supposed to enhance the arm-suppression action.
13:40 There's a backward head-butt somewhere there. And some schools emphasize a quick back arch just before the drop to Shiko-dachi, basically a Chinkuchi using the back/spinal muscle to break a bear hug, then a backward head-butt at Shiko-dachi.
Thank you for this video Sensei Che, because it's always good to revisit the Kururunfa kata by looking at various different ways different schools do it, because the GOOD differences enrich our understanding of the kata and its possibilities.

I'm sorry I never got to train with Sensei Chinen - by all accounts, he was a superb teacher. We have some of his DVDs, and the grace of his movements rings clear.
Ché at least continues to keep some of his teacher's knowledge alive, and this is much easier to follow than a book of kata!
I really love this kata - it will be my next grading kata when I head to yon dan in a few years, so I look forward to spending much time with it.

On the body weight drop with the back to the camera at the end of the kata (the sword drop) low baseball catcher’s stance I’ve always been curious why this isn’t a lower/wider than normal Shiko-dachi stance. A wider base would add more balance and power.

Great question - couple of points to cover.
1) The classical bunkai is the throw, and if you're throwing someone from directly behind you in shikodachi but over your shoulder, you'll likely fall forward with them. The haunched position also suggests one knee on the ground after throwing the person, ready to smash the face/ears with the palm strikes.
2) My preferred application is the armbar over the shoulder to snap the arm at the elbow. The throw feels more like a compliance throw than a realistic application, but like all classical bunkai, it is there as a starting point for further research.

There are some things that I haven’t been privy too, some things forgotten and or changed, or simply lost. So lots of reverse engineering

久留頓破 (ku ru rum fa) means "a long overstayed guest is kicked-out [finally]". Then this one is traveling with a luggage called saifa (a travel-size kururumfa™). So what are your numbers (in miles and hours) traveled, one (who's the other one) might ask the one (who is the one which overstayed)? And the answer is in sanchin (3), shisochin (4), sanseru (36), sepai (18), seisan (13) or suparimpei (108) or even perhaps in tensho which used to be rokkishu (6 although I would doubt the number here when these palms start to rotate) but really it is just 42. So it goes... ©
