- Shane Speal goes back to the basics, showing how to get started playing the blues on a 3-string slide cigar box guitar. The tuning is in Open G (GDG) and a stubby slide will be necessary for this one.

I will be back. Got one in the mail! Can't wait. Blues, here I come.
I finished making my cigar box guitar last month and this tutorial has been a wonderful tool. You have many videos and I hope to watch and learn from them all. Thanks for your inspiration.
Shane, found your videos after searching, and BOY am I so happy 😀 me I'm a 30 year frustrated tryer but after watching you I'm off to play some blues on my homemade 3 string CGB. BIG thanks Tim
I think I got on one of your playlists because your videos are playing back to back to back.... you could say I’m binge watching... 😎
Hey man, this is awesome. I built my own slide a month or so ago and have just been figuring out little riffs on my own. I'd never spent much time with a fretless so it was all abit alien, not anymore!
This is super helpful! Ive struggled to find videos on 3 string fretless slide so this has made my morning.
Thank you :) peace!
Played a cigar box around a camp fire last summer and loved it. Just had one custom made and your videos are very helpful. I wasn’t much of a guitar player before but I’m starting to sound like I know whY I’m doing. Please keep it up!
Im a first time player on cigar boxes. Saw one a month ago and thought it was awesome. Had a left handed one made, just a beginner one, nothing special. Your lessons are excellent. Keep it up. I'm a fan.
THANK YOU! There's a lot more on the way!
Breakthrough lesson. Thank you so much, managed to play along with most of that ... feeling fine 👍 CBG 💜

Thank you so much for this tutorial. It is awesome.
man, I love that old beat up CBG......even the layer of sweat and grime crud on the sides and back of the neck add to it's personality and speak that it's has a past of it's own.

Im in uk and have just seen a tv programme about the riseing popularity of the cigar box guitar esp in west midlands / black country. Which is where i live! I tried regular 6 string guitar when i was a youngster without a lot of progress! Im in my 50s now and im very interested in these great instruments and would love to build one and learn to play it a bit. I will be back to watch your videos. Great job.
I tried to learn a regular 6 string guitar as well with no success when I was younger.
I got a baritone ukulele a few months ago because it has 4 strings but has a much more similar sound to guitar (unlike a average uke). I have had much more success with it and it was relatively easy to get the point it was fun to play which I never got to with a 6 string guitar. Falling upon these cigar box guitars I kinda wish I had got my hands on one of these instead of my uke but I'll just have to get one of these as well haha.
I hope you find an instrument with less strings easier and more fun like I did!
@@aspacedoutace cigar box guitar great and easy to get a tune out of.ive made two now! Very addictive. One string diddley bow next! they are great .have a look on here !
thanks for yours tutorials! ;)
You're welcome! More to come...
tanks for you 'and from Argentina
Thank you!.....More Videos, Please!....My Favorite!
I’m filming more next week, Subscribe!
Thank you
Great!
Great stuff Shane! What do you think about routing a groove along the fret board for the end of the stubby to sit in when playing only the middle string? (to avoid hitting the top string)
Shane, that is awesome. Thanks for sharing! Buying you a cheap dinner!
You rock!
HI Shane, thanks for the postcard. Really cool alternate tunings. I know you do a cover of Rush Working Man- Could you do a tutorial on how to play it?
Still a great video, helps the novice immediately get something out of their 3 string cigar box guitar
Supeeer thanks
Epic
Great
sweet!
Do you have any finger style lessons on fretless 3 string guitar ?
Hey Shane how do you play these short tones? Do you stob the strings from ringing out? Greets from Germany! Your tutorials are the best!
MInd blown - wow
I just finished making one and I'm not sure I have the fret lines laid out correctly. Is there some way you could mention it on one of your videos? John
Thanks for taking your time can you refer me to where I could buy a 3 string guitar box at a reasonable price thank you for sharing!!
And just subscribed :)
thanx sooooooo
You are awesome! I've learning a ton from your resources, but I am still particularly confused about one thing. My confusion is about how to play/deal with minor chords on a 3 string open tuned fretless guitar. I understand how to form them on a fretted 3 string, but what do you do to for them on a fretless when playing with a slide? Any help will be greatly appreciated!
Thanks and peace.
This is a very good question! When you're playing 3-string slide, tuned Open G (GDG), the chords are neither minor or major. Because they're made up of only two notes (the high string is the same note as the low string), these chords could be called a "diad" (two note chord) or more commonly a "power chord."
When I create arrange songs using this setup, I'm basically arranging the song by REMOVING certain notes that can't be played in this setup. My goal is to make the song APPEAR to sound like the original, but in reality, I'm playing these power chords instead of minor or major chords. If the song has minor chords, the listener imagines hearing them, even if I don't play them.
...and that's the magic of playing cigar box guitar.
Whats the best slide for begiiner? I wanna trey some glas slide in Small or medium size. Is it good ?
Shane I am trying to figure out what slide to get, the one I have is 2" and I need something shorter. I was playing bass before my surgery, not the greatest just learning but I had 2 brain surgeries over the last year and short term memory is not good anymore but I am determined and my husband just bought me a guitar box 3 string and I really really am determined to start with this and move on. this video has got me going and excited, just my slide is to long lol. i am going to your page to see if you have an email. If i repeat myself alot I apologize, but as I said I had 2 brain surgeries over the last year and one the year before...music is what is saving me and I want to play again!!!
Larry McCraw thank you! Shanes helpful you tube videos have given me hope
I have a 3 string tuned to GDG, but it sounds much higher pitch than yours. I'm wondering what i can do to get mine to have a lower pitch..I did try to tune lower but the strings were just too loose to make a good sound
any help much appreciated..Your teaching videos are awesome. I am new to this . I love my speal stubby slide!
Chris
Strings for a Bass are E, A , D, G take the A, D, G and re tune the A to G you are now playing lower.
Justin Johnson made me a fan but he quit selling. Looking forward to saving up for one of yours and learning. And I hope you sell LEFTIES for us southpaws.
Hey Shane, have you done a video about your video setup for these things? I notice your camera control is from your IPHONE. What do you use to make these great vids?
I use a Mevo Camera which allows me to use the iPhone as a director's chair
Hi Shane where did you get your guitar please and how much are your slides
What bolt are you using for the nut?
open tuning is GDG,, I play Ukulele GCEA, not important, what is important is at the 12th fret should be the same, only an octave higher.. Just bought the one hour build cigar box guitar and cant get the 12th to be in tune on lower G? how important is that when strumming the blues? the other two ( wood bridge ) I can get to tune in.. thanks
I'm a beginner but Shane deals with this in one of his lessons, you may have seen it by now, but the 12th fret should be halfway between the bridge and nut (if that's the right word) but the bridge/saddle is placed at an angle if you notice for some reason beyond my understanding. Check out lessons by Shane and Del Puckett.
What is the sight for your stubby slides?
BTW, what kind of new camera and sound recording are you using? Sounds good. : )
Mevo Camera
I love the worn look of that guitar.
Twenty one years of constant beating! ;)
And nary a complaint! (or nearly) ;-).
