Today, we acknowledge that we watch videos on unceded Gamer land. The noble gamers of this channel lived in harmony with the land and her gifts for untold generations.
Just kidding, this is still basically a history video. I have manipulated you. Today, DJ Peach Cobbler discusses the potential historical value of Grand Theft Auto IV, how it preserved and commented upon a particular moment in time which has passed, and the struggles of game preservation. Grand Theft Auto. GTA. Gaming. We're GAMERS. WE GAME.

GTA IV will always have a special place for me because it came out the day I proposed to my wife. She and I were enjoying a nice night together and right after I to pop the question her brother bursts through the door of our apartment and is like "everyone shut the hell up, I have a copy of GTA IV!" She tells him we just got engaged and his response was "thats cool and all, but thats not GTA IV."
We spent the rest of fhe night playing GTA IV. It was, in fact, cooler than getting engaged.

On a bit of a side note, Russo-Ukranian war really demonstraded why arguments against piracy are a total load of horseshit. Not long after beginning of the war Steam stopped accepting russian debit cards as a payment method due to it's bank abiding by the sanctions. Russians no longer had ability to buy game on steam which in theory should have pushed most of russian gamers towards pirating. Hell, at least one indie developer outright came out and said "I don't have issues with you pirating my games". Cases of piracy persecution in Russia are few and far between. But what people actually did? They started to look for workarounds, converting rubles into kazakh tenge and then back into rubles at disadvantageous rates, buying keys at prices higher than steam's. Mind you, russians on average earn less than those from the western countries. Essentialy they were told "Your money's no good here" and still went out of their way to give their money to the developers. At this point I don't just consider piracy not unethical, but a neccessary good to preserve that which would have been lost otherwise.
The alphas of duke nukem forever, prey(2007), the countless games named 'abandonware' thanks to corporate bullshit that had them delisted from stores? All that could be accessed only by the many online archives that pirating provides.

Have you guys ever seen the movie Rango? Rango is more than just a mordern and creative take on the western movie genre, it is a tale about legends, it's saying that the movies that inspired Rango are as important as the movie itself, and so are the legends depicted in the movie. Thats why at the end of the movie, instead of killing Jake, Rango let's him go, because just like himself, they're both legends of the west.
For me, this is the reason why we should preserve video games, they're not just fun, but more importantly, they're legends, we should tell these stories to newer generations because legends cannot die.

Thankfully age of empires 2 was beautifully remastered and it seems we will have it preserved for a long time. Crazy to think that Microsoft of all companies respected their legacy so well.
I was a toddler when GTA IV was released. Recently I found the Xbox360 disc in a cabinet just gathering dust and I played it for the first time, and I had the exact same thoughts about how much of a time capsule it is. When I also found the DLC disk but it was too scratched-up to work, and the Xbox360 store had shut down, and there was no PS5 remaster, I think I realized for the first time how fragile video game media still is. That even in this day and age where the copies of movies and games seem infinite only a *fraction* are gonna survive in a couple thousand years, and how do we know that what survives will be the most important ones worth preserving?
jailbreak your 360 bro. that way you can play every 360 game ever made for the price of figuring out how flash your bios and where to get the games. i had a ps2 with a 300 gig HDD in it full of games in 2009. you can do it. fuck them and play old games brother. new games are gay anyway.
The game is backwards compatible on xbox plus the dlc not sure about ps

Thank you for this! As someone who works in audiovisual heritage preservation, I find this conversation incredibly important. GTA is truly a product of its time, and it should be preserved as such. As a Halo fan I’m so glad how the MCC turned out. Comparing the Preservation of my Beloved titles compared to what Rockstar did is a day and night difference, and shows in my opinion a good example of the publisher preserving a game. Even though the Mcc was a burning pile of trash from release until about 2018 they eventually picked themselves up, and I now can play every Halo title i grew up in, they’re safe. And that is something I’m thankful for

Haven't watched yet but as a Serb I straight up can't replay this game because the voice acting for "Serbian" is so atrocious I can't bear to listen to it. I get the desire to play the game again, I remember the voice acting, and I immediately dismiss it.

I'm really glad you decided to make this video. The subject of games preservation is one I've thought about a lot lately, how the endless tangle of publishers and rights issues has engendered a second great loss of media, like the thousands of lost films from the early days of that medium. Some of my all time favorite games from my childhood, formative, important games, are trapped in legal limbo or lost due to lack of interest and only kept accessible by the ceaseless work of internet autists ensuring that even if Sony doesn't care about it, I can still revisit Legend of Legaia and other games like it.
