I love that Lilith calls Hooty 'Hootcifer' not just because the mythological Lilith was involved with Lucifer but also because 'Hootcifer' pretty much translates to 'Bringer of Hoots'.
Dana, Alex Hirsch, and everyone involved in creating Hooty knew exactly what they were doing in making a character that is 50% adorable and 50% horrifying. He is as gruesome and terrifying as he is lovable and cute. Such a simply genius dynamic in personality traits and features that creates an endless supply of comedy gold.
He's annoying and weird. And alot of his character and jokes rely on gross humor and body horror. Some people just don't like that. It's not that hard to understand. You can still like something while understanding why other don't.
Hooty’s powers are actually kind of lopsided to think about because on the one hand he does a very good job at roughhousing and being a guardian demon overall but on the other hand he got beaten up by the owl beast early on the show.. and as we’ve seen the owl beast is not exactly powerful.. but who knows

New headcanon: if not for arbitrary range limits on how far Hooty can travel from the owl house or the porta-hooty house, Hooty totally could have beat Belos into the stratosphere if someone had just asked him to do so but no one ever asked so he never tried.
Hooty seems to be the type of character that strikes a perfect balance between unpredictably chaotic and hilariously endearing. He is VERY in-your-face, has a finnicky attention span, and often doesn't pick up on a lot of social cues (but doesn't mean he is completely oblivious to them). But beneath all of this, this agent of chaos is an innocent puppy who just wants someone to be his friend; if you're patient with him, you'll soon see how loyal and resilient he is. EDIT: I did NOT expect to get this many likes! I was just making an observation on a quirky character. I think it’s absolutely incredible how they wrote Hooty to be annoying for the characters but hilarious for the audience. Usually it’s the other way around for comic relief characters in cartoons. All hail Chad Hooty.
And it’s clear why they keep him around in spite of his annoying behavior. They do care about him (Eda remarks he sort of has a way of growing on you-) and he’s dedicated to protecting them…and is damn good at it.
Hooty’s reaction to Luz’s drawing implies there are others of Hooty’s species, along with the fact there are Demon types and specific species. Another thing is that no one really knows much about him, so these creatures must be secretive, or extremely dangerous, or both. Dangerous is shown by, well… He fought a squad of the Emporer’s coven like a joke, and can take lot’s of damage. They can also be recreated via magic shown by Eda and Lillith’s (first) duel. Let’s call these the Owl Tubes. Owl Tubes likely work alone or in packs (mostly alone), and are likely to be very territorial (Again, Luz’s drawing). Owl Tubes function like owls, as they can’t digest bones, instead making owl pellets. They are obvious predators with their eyes facing forwards. Owl Tubes need an object to make host, like a tree or house, which becomes the body. Owl Tubes seem to have almost full control over the body, as Hooty has legs (Moonlight gathering), and can also control the lights inside the Owl House. If an Owl Tube were to possess a tree, they would likely be able to control all of it’s limbs. They were also probably made by wild magic. The powers of Owl Tubes also might be able to scale with the size of the host (Porta Hooty seems to be weaker than Owl House Hooty.) Thank you for coming to my TEDTalk. Oh, and there are babies or something since Eda raised him. Also also, they have some bee like functions (talking with dance), minor cat features, (hissing, fur/skin puffing out to appear bigger to potential threats), and skin being removable (evolution to an actual species from just materials, maybe?) From the looks of it, hooty’s species is also as strong as its host. Porta hooty doesn’t seem as powerful as owl house hooty. This makes me wonder how strong he would be if he connected to a mansion or something as big.
I don't think they're pack animals otherwise Eda would probably know about more of them (aka the pack Hooty was a part of), and Hooty wouldn't be so territorial. This is likely because it's one tube owl per host, which means that they cannot share hosts/territory. Hosts are presumably too big and immobile for them to function as a pack. He probably becomes territorial over other tube owls trying to take his host for their own, like a beta fish :>

See what makes Hooty work is that never once have they ever taken him seriously, or tried to give him angst. Even in like the very dramatic heavy scenes he’s the same character. He’s consistent, and it’s okay because he’s a horrifying worm monster demon thing. Like you don’t feel bad not taking him seriously. And that’s what makes Hooty work. You're not wrong, Hooty basically is the owl house. He's either an owl demon who agrees to become part of the house that was already themed after owls, or he physically is the house, or the house is made of owl demons, or something.
We should be thanking Hooty honestly. He got Lumity together, got the owl beast and Eda to morph together, and ate the letter that was sent to a Titan Trappers.

I don’t know if anybody will get this but hooty has really strong mort energy (like from the Madagascar spinoff series) seemingly cute but in reality disturbingly hilarious.
He is a bug-type house demon, right?? Like a Woodworm Demon. Though he does have a lot of owl features. Demons are complicated and Hooty, especially considering the list of what he can do just keeps on getting longer and stranger.
Aside from EVERY emotion hooty makes people feel. Did anyone feel empty when he was ripping himself from the house. I know it was comedic but it was also on some level disturbing in the same way a panic attack is.

hooty’s existence makes me completely question my reality. if i even begin to comprehend that this talking, terrifying owl worm house voiced by alex hirsch is an actual character that someone thought up, created, and designed, it will send me down a spiral of confusion and existence. he is a beautiful and horrifying enigma with powers beyond our understanding.
My conclusion, Hooty is the perfect formula of chaos, freindlyness, outcast, and allaround loveable yet horrifying boi who seeks affection and approval from others

From the looks of it, hooty’s species is also as strong as its host. Porta hooty doesn’t seem as powerful as owl house hooty. This makes me wonder how strong he would be if he connected to a mansion or something as big.
I don't think they're pack animals otherwise Eda would probably know about more of them (aka the pack Hooty was a part of), and Hooty wouldn't be so territorial. This is likely because it's one tube owl per host, which means that they cannot share hosts/territory. Hosts are presumably too big and immobile for them to function as a pack. He probably becomes territorial over other tube owls trying to take his host for their own, like a beta fish :>

Aside from EVERY emotion hooty makes people feel. Did anyone feel empty when he was ripping himself from the house. I know it was comedic but it was also on some level disturbing in the same way a panic attack is.
