Nirvana was an American rock band formed in Aberdeen, Washington, in 1987. Founded by lead singer and guitarist Kurt Cobain and bassist Krist Novoselic, the band went through a succession of drummers before recruiting Dave Grohl in 1990.

Kurt was extremely messy as a guitar player, and as a singer. And that on its own, made him legendary. You just can't replicate perfect mistakes

Perfection is fucking boring, it just sucks.
It's punk, and punk is about the energy. But I would never call it imperfection. Kurt's voice was like a guitar amp just at the edge of overdrive or distortion. That's exactly what it needs to get the feeling and energy of what he wanted to say. Nirvana alsways had this silent and loud dynamic, and his voice is exactly like that too.
I think Kurt was a pretty talented guitarist, it feels like his insecurities would never let him show the world that. Nirvana also had that whole anti-rock star thing with their big anti-guitar solos, which i know is part of it
Nirvana isn’t an imperfect band. Dave and Krist dont make mistakes often when playing. The only reason Nirvana doesn’t sound chaotic and painful to listen to is because they play at good pitch and the rhythm section is so strong. That’s why Kurt could fuck around and fall over on stage and the song would still sound somewhat like the record. Because Dave was the atomic clock of the band and Krist was there making sure the melody didn’t get too off the rails

When the lead /rhythm guitarist plays a solo, all jaws drops.
People do see the drummer because he’s center stage, directly beyond the singer (in most stage setups), plus, it’s down right fascinating to watch drummers.
Bass players are the most underrated in almost any band, unless they are a lead/backup vocalist.
Heck, I bet 75% of people don’t know why bassists are SO important and give the music its sound.
Bassists are the backbone of every band.

The beauty of nirvana was in the simplicity of the chords and lyrics. They kept it simple and delivered powerful messages through their songs. RIP Kurt
You are so right. Many people miss that. You nailed it. But his melodies are so amazing and chords structures are simple, yet I feel like they could have been orchestrated as symphonies as well.
Pat Smear on rhythm guitar. He was in the punk group The Germs and is currently in Foo Fighters with Dave Grohl (drummer in Nirvana; founder of Foo Fighters, lead singer, and rhythm guitarist in FF).
Michelle Alvarez he was also a drummer for queens of the Stone Age. Man of many talents David is.

The Grunge scene (performance and vocal style) made him so underrated as a vocalist; at least we have to salute him for his fearless mentality to hit every note, and for the intense emotion he put in everything that he sang. I really miss the 90's. Great reaction as always...!

I lol'd at him saying "we can barely play our instruments" with the video paused on Dave Grohl. Dave woulda been like "I can play every instrument on this stage, and in fact I may just do that on one of my future albums."
Kurt was a decent guitarist and singer but liked lots of music where playing and singing ability was not necessary, this influenced his 'messy' style which I love.

Y’all better be grateful if you had the chance to live through the 90s and attend concerts like this. People like me that didn’t live through those times have to watch these concerts thinking how dope that would’ve need to be at.

Kurt was a master for creating catchy songs, most of his songs have such lovely hooks. His voice is imperfect in so many ways, yet beautiful at the same time.

I love that punk has a totally different approach to beauty in music. There is a very specific "punk aesthetic". It's not about knowing your instrument and being able use it to the edge. It's just about being able to use basic technics to create impactful stuff that are simple and understandable. And first term of being a good punk musician is being a bad musician.Obviusly none of these guys are a virtiusso of their enstruments and as the Kurt Cobain himself said "He wouldnt pass a guitar 101". But on the other hand they can create undeniably good music with their instrument which obviously makes them a good musician.
Not knowing how to play an instrument can be liberating, as many have said after learning technique after becoming famous. When you know which chords to pair with other chords, it boxes you in to the point you can't experiment and arrive to unconventional chord progressions that work but aren't otherwise obvious.

Hi, Ken again :), Just wanted to emphasize, Mike Patton has 6 octaves of voice range! just listen to him even if you do not want to react to it, although we very much enjoy your reactions cause it has lots of soul to it.
He was in many bands and still working, but probably the most famous one is Faith No More. He has done some classics too.

I remember having an old VHS taped version of the original broadcast as a kid (which was amazing at the moment), seeing the entire thing eventually released was just incredible. Which if anyone remembers had different camera angles, like Kurt jumping across the stage at the beginning of "Breed"
John Lennon had that raspy growl too, he didn't use it often BUT he uses it to perfection in "Revolution "
I feel like Kurt was a few years away from blowing out his voice. The way he sang was just way too rough on his vocal cords.

There will never be another Kurt Cobain. And amazes me time and time again how when you watch him saying it almost seems easy and calm. Crazy. My appreciation for him and nirvana since this band broke out when I was a teenager until now has grown exponentially over the years. I believe he really was an angel here to tell us what we needed to hear. By the way David Grohl on the drums is in sane! Yes they can all play their instruments like nobody else❤️✌️
You've probably already had this answered, but the rhythm guitarist is Pat Smear of the Germs, who was joining Nirvana for live shows, and also would be in the Food Fighters with Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl
the thing is, he did care what everybody thought and more importantly he cared what people were being fed in terms of the major labels. He had always said he made songs he thought people would want to listen to , what he would want to listen to. He taped over amp labels, tried to not push anything when some 16 year old kid experiences his shows. That is caring more than anyone in 1992.
Loved your direct analysis! Volumes have been written about how Kurt and Nirvana were surprised at how successful they became! I've always loved Kurt's style and passion in his voice and instantly excuse minor flubs in his delivery during a live show! Far more forgivable than lipsyncing or showing up stoned!

You should really check out the unplugged recording of Where Did You Sleep Last Night. I think it's the best showcase of what Kurt's voice could do, and all the super unique bits that make his singing so recognizable.

I've always loved Kurt's voice by most standards he wasnt a great singer but thats what i liked about him you could sing along to his songs he had such raw vocal ability you can't teach

For a female led grunge band try the cranberries, zombie in particular. She has a style that is based on Irish keening and Zombie was written in protest of the Irish Troubles after an IRA bomb killed two children..

Remember when this thing came out and it was new? There had been nothing like it on MTV, or anywhere in the mainstream before. It was so fresh, we couldn't imagine music like this was even possible to make. Much later I stumbled upon the early records of Soul Asylum, and thought to myself, "holy crap, these guys were playing Nirvana before Nirvana!" Well, not quite the same, but similar in many ways.
Talking about bands that could barely play their instruments but were passionate about their music, Sonic Youth and The Pixies were pretty high on that list.

Love Nirvana, love all metal and grunge! I heard you praising Kurt's ability to switch so easily from raw and loud to clean and soft. Well, if you really want to hear the MASTER in that area, please listen to: Slipknot and especially "Wait and Bleed". First time I heard it I thought they had 2 singers. What's most remarkable (you'll hear it) is that Corey Taylor was only 18 at the time!

Pat Smear was on rhythm guitar! Who eventually came with Dave Grohl (the drummer) to the Foo Fighters. Which, Dave started on his own. Playing every instrument on the debut album. Then became a "drummer that can sing and play guitar." Pat came over after awhile. Left after a rooftop show. Then the band convinced him to come back.
Hi! If you would you need to react to some Chris Cornell, one that hasn't been done much by him but is a gem from 1990 is when he was with his Supergroup Temple of the Dog. They did "Say Hello to Heaven", live at the Moor is Seattle. He was young, he wasn't smoking then I don't think and his voice was so clean. If you want to hear those extra extra high range belts you should react to this one. There's really no other video where you hear it as clean. Thank you so much for your wonderful reactions!
I saw Nirvana live in concert for the IN UTERO tour.... 4 months before he was murdered. Not suicide...People need to research the reality surrounding Kurt's death. Any way, best concert of my life...

Well idk about others, but this channel seems like a legit vocal coach. I’m sure if he was a fake he wouldn’t have lesson sign ups as a link in the description. I think there’s more just because it’s become popular.
