When I was a summer camp counselor we took the kids to an arcade. One of my kids suggested we play House of the Dead together. I told him I wasnt great at shooting games but Ill give it a shot. That kid carried both of us all the way to the end boss on less than a dollar and we eneded up running out of money on the final boss.
I know there are two characters, but I like to imagine the POV that they are playing as is like some conjoined person that has Arin and Dans head on one body and they are just arguing constantly with each other about which direction to go and who gets to shoot which target.
I feel like it's kinda the opposite here, Danny keeps giving Arin crap for being on the wrong side, while Danny is continually letting his side of the screen get hit more while Arin actually has the right side fully covered.
The horrible controls of Resident Evil added to the horror theme. You feel helpless, because you kinda are. HotD seems to have a similar yet way more shallow mechanic for the same effect.
One of my favorite memories of the original game is my church had this summer vacation trip they'd do every year for high school students, and one of the places we went to was Fun Land in Florida. And Fun Land has a VIP arcade area where all the games were free, and my church paid for that for us all. They had House of the Dead 1 & 2 in there, and the thing about arcade shooting games back in the day is they didn't have controllers, they had plastic guns to shoot with. One for player 1 and one for player 2. But because the other people in my group were more interested in something else, I played both games by myself in multiplayer by duel-wielding. And it was some of the most fun I ever had with an arcade game
The reason this game is easier than you remember is that in the arcade they make your shots hit slightly around the reticle instead of directly where you're aiming lmao. They really got a lot of quarters out of me.
I was once at a Dave & Busters and for some reason the machines were on free play for like an hour. So I played through HotD for the first and only time, double guns on my own. Very fun just blasting everything.
Dan: "Shoot everything in sight, that's the story of this game, right?" Me: The part that makes since, yes. Still, it's always great to see the grumps playing classic arcade games. And for Dan to play a horror game where he can fight back.
I remember going to an arcade once and a friend and I played this for like an hour straight and beat it, and all the other kids that were with us gathered around. It was such an awesome experience.
@@fuzzyotterpaws4395 It's bad...but the sequel was WAAAY worse. There's a part in the opening stage where you get threatened and told to, "Suffer like G (Agent G, Dan's character in this game) did". However, the voice actor read it as a question.
Love the lead dude pulling on the mansion's front doors, instead of y'know....pushing. It wouldn't have made a difference since he shoots the lock out anyway, but watching someone get frustrated by pulling on a push door is always fantastic.
One of the things I remember learning as a kid from someone on the internet was that light gun games like this don't really need to aim offscreen or at a little mark on the machine to reload; you just needed to cover the sensor and shoot to reload while keeping the gun in place. made life so much easier.
There's multiple endings but I believed it's based on how many people you rescued and your ending score. It's supposed to play after the end credits. Generally 1 of 3 endings.
I had this playing in the background and missed them mentioning this is a multiplayer, so for a good few minutes I thought Arin was just yelling at Dan sometimes to stay on his side of the couch. Finally heard them mentioning the crosshairs and Arin complaining that Dan never died, then figured out they were playing together lol
You can play this game with wii remotes, a little bit of modding the game and a certain computer program for using a Wii remote like a mouse and it runs like a dream. You can play it the way it's meant to be played. It's amazing
There’s also a couple of fanmade projects like Sinden trying to make proper light guns that work on LED TVs with the use of cameras, which is super cool!
@@MrSkerpentine This remake is so-so but playing it with a Sinden and a classic music/SFX mod makes it a lot more fun and entertaining, not to mention challenging (since you can shoot outside the screen for reloading with it)
I would honestly love to see them try their typing skills at Typing of the Dead, which is basically this exact same thing, but you have to spell out a word each time you want to shoot
