These days the intersection of 9th Street and Hennepin Avenue is bougie AF, but back when this song was written it was urban rot personified. Porn shops, pawn shops, gun stores, and worst of all a bar called the Bucket of Blood. It was a biker bar, incredibly dangerous -- there were multiple years where over half of all homicides in Minneapolis occurred within a half mile radius of the front door of that place. I was scared just to walk by it across the street in broad daylight when the bar wasn't even open.
This is the superior version simply due to his decision to repeat "One for every year he's away she says" and then laugh. Goes perfectly with that haunting music.
And the name of the gay bar is "Chocolates Jesus". No it's not ....ugh.. I'm going to hell. I hope nobody is standing next to me when I get struck down.😬🤐
Although the mood of this song is very creepy and I don't like listening to it in the dark (Mainly for the line "I crawl into the stairwell and sleep in your hat"),It has grown on me and I think that it is one of Tom Waits most underrated songs.
@TheSidewalkCipher 9th and Hennepin is a real intersection in Minneapolis. I visited Minneapolis in the mid 1990s, and out of curiosity decided to check out the area. It was largely cleaned up by then. Later on, I was told by a friend who's a Minnesota native that it used to be the red light district.
A mediocre entertainer can only achieve greatness if he/she is able to become a caricature of themself. Best singer ever for being able to simulate a cat heaving up a hairball. Nye's bar rocks!
Poetry is better than most art, skips the senses and goes right to the brain.
Search Poetry Collection torrent but your statement is not true, Everything goes through senses
it's not the poetry. it's the literature
I wish I had a chance to see him live... it feels like my life is missing something...
"...and you take on the dreams of the ones who have slept there..." Top 5 Waits for me
this is a beautiful poem. one of my faves.

I'm always disappointed that this version leaves out the section that includes the "rag water and bitters and blue ruin" line.
He's mesmerizing
Minneapolis, MN
the best lyricist ever. try "who are you", "time" "wish i was in new orleans", etc. the lyrical visions are amazing

there’s a gay bar on the corner and a sushi place with a rooftop bar across the street
And the name of the gay bar is "Chocolates Jesus". No it's not ....ugh.. I'm going to hell. I hope nobody is standing next to me when I get struck down.😬🤐
This was, still is, and always we’ll be pure art. Waits is able to create a sweet bitter sad atmosphere due to his voice that is unmatched
I can't agree more. Waits' artistry is singular. He's in another league entirely.

" Ahh there's uncle Phil over there, shit. I owe him plenty of money..;"
I know. What a great line
I live a few blocks from there.
YAY MINNEAPOLIS!!
Riding home on the evening train after a day at Work... Nothing wrong with the decission to listen to this Song ...
Listen to "Downtown Train" next time you're on the train.
This is the scariest thing I've seen all day...I really haven't been listening to enough Tom Waits.
So so amazing!

Long live the waits.
This is art at it's finest, guys and girls.
I love Tome waits he is a king.
he does routinely cite other songs throughout his work. slight nods as though we'd all know what he was talking about.
Tom waits baby 😍🌟
Now I'm surprised the guy in Seattle is allowed to have a donut shop that shares this name. Incredible donuts that you should try.
Ah, vigilantes are all exactly the same.
One for every year he's away, she said
🖤🌙
Moby's was on Block E, which is Hennepin between 6th & 7th streets. Close to 9th & Hennepin, but not quite.
You're talking out of your ass. Tom Waits was ALWAYS playing a character.
So many nods to the movie Harvey
@pengwenwork That is one of my all-time favorite lines!
insomnia brought me here
I like how he adds that in.
