I mean, so much is made in China, where on earth would one draw the line? Let's face it, so many companies use Chinese made componentry that if they were all successful in gaining exemptions, it would make any legislative ban holier than Swiss cheese and effectively turn the so-called ban into a complete non-starter nonsense. I can't speak for anybody else on the subject, but I'm completely fed up with all of this jingoistic nonsense. Seriously, does anyone [really] think that China, as the workshop of the world, is going to tank its own economy by sabotaging everything it makes that has some sort of digital component? Are we expected to be afraid of our microwave ovens, fridges, freezers, etc, next? An awful lot of people need to grow up, get a grip, and get a life.

The reason are, that those people that have EV's, are mostly filling up at home.
This means that they are on long tripps when charging, and because EV's tends to be the newer cars. Those people have more money.

E.g. if we count up all the government subsidies that make mass transit work and add them to the end-user ticket cost, *THAT* will be more expensive than a Robotaxi ride IF we ignore all the subsidies that have gone into private-vehicle road transport over the century or so that we've been subsidizing that. :) There's a lot in that -- think about what NATO militaries do vs. what they would do if we only used hydrocarbons for durable plastics, fertilizer and lubricants.

Where their profit is from people stopping in after filling their tanks. Who often higher a good portion of the economy entry level jobs.
Having a lot of peoples job on the line will automatically be weary of anything threatening their livelihood. And will kling onto and redistribute any information (true or not) that makes them feel better.

The better the system, the worse the problem. If course, at some point, the risk of consequences (even death) are less than those risks driving manually, but we humans will not accept that. Safely (relatively) crossing that gulf of autonomy to where the vehicle can truly operate autonomously is the biggest challenge of this technology path today.

Elon is not necessary wrong. If cities eliminate public busses. Eliminating the need to buy, maintain and staff a public transportation system. Then subsidizes a privately owned autonomus vehicles. Then follow Texas law that allow EV tunnels underneath public sidewalks. This would eliminate surface traffic and increase public safety by eliminating accidents.

I think the idea is that once robotaxis reach MASSIVE economies of scale the price can come down below the cost of even subsidized public transit. NOT that it will start out cheaper or soon fall to those levels.
