they would have to reduce the tourque output.....
the last dodge truck to have a manual made less TQ than the auto........ because FIAT didnt want to stick in a decent clutch
1000 foot pounds = you need a dual or triple plate clutch..... just like a semi
and they arnt cheap..... can be hard to adjust (but the newer eaton 3 plates are SUPER EASY to adjust)....ETC
im a stick fan as well...... 1000 foot pounds threw a BIG standard would be epic as fuck

The old 5.9 will always sound better than the 6.7
My tuned 6.7 sounds pretty close to the early 5.9, but 5.9 has a pure diesel sound that is perfection👍🏿

When you do the second gen manifold swap and put in a non vgt turbo it sounds like a 5.9.

I like the older Dodge because I’m nostalgic. I have also owned them and worked them like people imply they should be done. I welded the wheel wells above the rear wheels, many times. I fishplated several bent frames from hauling loads my current 1/2 ton hauls without flex.. I remember the cab and racks hitting each other due to the flex in the frame, when I hauled a mature cow or bull to the vet’s office. The radio was often useless and or broken (I live in the sticks). I fried several wiring harnesses due to bad voltage regulators.
BUT I love the old trucks! They were not exactly better. I know from experience! Real use! Did I say I would like that truck in my collection? I would.
We remember what we want to remember. I could do all the work needed on the old truck (basically). I don’t like even trying to fix the engine, transmission on my new trucks. That is the big difference for me. I ranch/farm and beat up trucks. The newer ones, if even just for the frame, are so much better. They are not always these luxobarges we see the journalists/critics testing. I have a 2010 basic GMC regular cab, long box, 5.3 4x4, vinyl seats, manual windows, automatic, etc. We still use it a fair amount.
You can get pretty basic trucks if you want. They’re special order though. Rarely will you see one on the lot. Can’t resell them, can’t get anything on trade so you drive them until they die, unfortunately. It is possible to live the old days in a new truck, you just have to want it and pursue it. I love them to death, haha, collect them even. Just sold my old collection of 14 original to custom 1950 -1979 trucks, all in mint shape and driven by myself friends and family. I’m building a new one. BUT, the older trucks were not better as in stronger, longer lasting etc, they were simpler ad generally didn’t have all the small stuff to go wrong like today’s condos on wheels.
I love them more than many can understand, but older trucks were not actually stronger. The frames flexed so much more, boxes tore from their mounts (never had that happen with the new trucks) with regular heavy farm use. There was nowhere near as much power! Working on a 70 GMC and bought a 53 Chev, original 216 6 cylinder, 3 in the tree, fully restored. I love em, they were not stronger though.

That old 12 valve sounds more appealing to me than even the 24 valve 5.9. A diesel truck is suPPOSED to sound like a diesel truck.
I've got two 24 valve 5.9's and they sound (almost) exactly like that that ol' Gen 1! People have called it "loud" or "annoying" I call it MUSIC !!!!!!

Only engine that could double the factory hp with a screwdriver to the injection pump and handle the power.

Yeah, why would Chevy want a Cummins when they had that amazing 6.2 and followed up with the 6.5 turbo diesels. The 6.2 was their restoration after the 5.7 diesel fiasco. That is why Dodge and Ford owned the diesel market until the Duramax finally showed up.
Can go see it once the cummins office building gets done with its remodeling. It used to sit in the museum in Columbus Indiana. I’ve actually touched this truck.

I'd drive the old 1985 over the new truck any day of the week. It's got character, cool styling, has a simple, dependable bulletproof engine, and is built like how a truck should be. The new truck looks bloated and bubbly, and honestly doesn't have that special feel of a pickup truck anymore. Sure it's quieter, more comfortable, and has a lot more power. They didn't have gigantic grills and electronics backed into them so it can hold your hand when driving. I like a vehicle where it is just me and the truck, with no electronic garbage in between. Also, this should be obvious, but that old Cummins truck will totally outlast the new ones. They were built with the intentions of a true work truck, not something to get groceries in and take the kids to soccer practice. That's what minivans are for, not pickup trucks.
I feel as though all the older pickups, weather it be Ford, Chevy, or Dodge all created fantastic pickups back then. Can't say the same about the new ones. That's just my two cents.

Totally agree. I remember the day when no one wanted to be caught dead driving a pick up truck. They were cheap to buy, cheap to insure. Now they cost more than a regular car because every wanna be yuppie wants one so they can look like they work for a living or grew up on a farm.

The Cummins engine saved the truck division of Dodge. Lee Iacocca planned on getting rid of the truck division by '85. The trucks were always a steady seller, but Iacocca wanted larger numbers. When the first Cummins diesel powered Dodges hit the market by '89 they were a hit and the truck division would eventually became the best selling branch of Chrysler.
I also remember that when Chrysler bought AMC so they could get the Jeep brand, they also killed off the Jeep J Series pickup after 88 (viewing it as unwanted competition to the D/W Series)
They made jeeps and the dodge gas engines is awesome will after 02 it’s garbage now Dodge is not a bad trucks
I was sung to sleep riding in a 92 12 valve for hundreds of thousands of miles. Something you not only get used to, but enjoy. It drowns everything out but it becomes a pleasure.

A friends family runs a fleet of the diesel rams since 89, updating to newer trucks over the years. the few oldest rams have well over a million miles. Front end parts, seats, rear ends and transmissions, a head gasket, crank and bearing here and there. But them things get the heavy work done!
I daily drive a 89 w250 with a 12v Cummins. The first year of production for the Cummins in the dodge.
I drive a 97 12 valve!
I used to drive a 2001 now i drive a 2005 24 valve. I miss my 01 with the engine being loud this 2005 is still loud but i cant compare it.

I've got an '89 D-350 my Dad bought new. It was amazing how many people warned him he was making a mistake because their only experience with diesels was with the early'80s GM cars.
I have a 1990 W250 with the Cummins diesel that hasn't been modified in mint condition. I'm feeling like these are a bit sought after😬
I remember my dad bought one in 1989-90 with the 5spd manual. Single cab, long bed 350 srw with 4wd and cloth interior, 410 positrack. When you panned across the Cummins indicator panel on the dash it really took me back. In 2006, I bought my Dodge Ram 2500 with the CTD and just traded it in this past January. I miss it.

@@Austin-mc2wv They only have problems if you're not doing proper maintenance. With the aftermarket available today there's no reason a 1st gen can't be built up to outlast any truck made today.
All good except for the 1st gen body. My uncle has one that was restored in 2001. Follow up to the present and it is a shitbox. Doors falling off, cab rotting, interior toast, and so on. It was also very well cared for, always maintained and no rat nest wiring. Sure would love to pull the engine though...

I have the very same D350 truck 1990, same color, interior, everything. Also a Ram Ecodiesel, sold my 2007 Cummins (last year 5.9). The D350 starts every time even after setting for 6-9 months. It’s dependable, and it’s a 1-ton single wheel pickup. It’s made to carry weight and tow. The Ecodiesel is made to drive.
My father owned two of them for his seed delivery business and we constantly had to wear ear plugs and reinforce the firewall so that the sound levels were even close to being tolerable. That engine burned through rear ends and clutches and don't even think about buying one with an automatic transmission because they were junk, but what a great truck!
That is really hurtful. You must have plenty of time being a tough guy behind your computer while you wait for your monthly government subsidies.

My 92 auto has 216K replaced one speed sensor...I watch my friend with a 5 speed replace several clutches and can't keep up when pulling hills with our rv's...everytime he reaches for a gear he drops a little further behind...pisses him off...the 5 speeds are great don't get me wrong...but the autos properly maintained have there place.
Orangecrush1976....I had the 91 DODGE.CUMMINS with the 3 speed with overdrive, and it held up very well pulling a 24 ft "offshore" boat.

Still drive my '92 D250 Cummins 5spd daily. In fact we are on a 3 week long vacation and so far have towed our toy hauler from San DiegoCa>MesaAz>CarlsbadNM>San AntonioTX>New OrleansLA and now to LouisvilleKy. Trailers not heavy, about 7,000 loaded, but have gotten 14-16mgg every fill up running 65mph.
I know my engine, transmission and injection pump inside and out and have absolutely ZERO concerns with it's durability.
too bad you cant buy real diesel fuel anymore. i used to get 25mpg with my cummins with off road fuel way back when they still sold it, now i get 16 or so
As nice as the newer diesels are, I wouldn't trade the 97 4x4 4spd (my dad ordered & modified) for anything. I love the rawness, and simplicity of the 12v. Not to mention the fact people can hear you roll up behind them at the mall

I was camping with my new bride back in 1993 in Banff Alberta. I had my camper on my 1977 Chev 1/2 ton 350 which was my pride and joy. Woke up to a dead battery. Thanks to a guy with a dodge Cummins I got a boost so I could move on to the next camp ground to pound my new wife the next evening..... I have always had a soft spot for the Dodge Cummins trucks.

I would definitely take the old one, because six months after you buy it you won't have 15 different check engine lights for the variety of idiotic systems installed on these new diesels.
I also think that old one does not have the stock exhaust on it. My neighbor has a 92 12 valve and the exhaust is not that loud.
I agree with you on the ride quality I was kind of impressed with his that it rides as well as it does for an old pickup.

What an AWESOME review! This really hits home for me, as I ordered a new DODGE/CUMMINS in 1991 after they had put the "INTERCOOLER" and overdrive transmission in them. I could get 25 MPG on that thing on the road!
I debated between the V-10 and the CUMMINS before I ordered, and ended up with the CUMMINS. Since then I have had 3 other DODGE/CUMMINS trucks, and every one of them was a different beast! Power/Torque kept increasing, and the MPG kept going down!!

I sold my 1989 W250 and bought a 2006 3rd gen. Honestly, I wasn't all that happy with the 1989 and I'll share why. It had a 3-speed A727 automatic with a non-lockup torque converter and 307 gearing. It had the Bosch VE injection pump and no intercooler. The turbo was not wastegated. At 1,800 rpm it would go about 55mph and it took putting your foot to the floor to get to 70. Any power made by the engine didn't get past the slippy torque converter. Towing meant being in the slow lane. Only regular cab was available. It sold very fast and fetched good $. The 3rd gen is properly geared, much more powerful, and has a real crew cab. Anyone wanting an early Cummins Dodge might consider a 12-valve 1st gen 1992 or newer and preferably 1994 through 1997. Those were powerful and set up better than the earliest models IMO.

My grandparents had a 93' with the Cummins. I wish we still had that truck. My grandmother wrapped it around a tree with me in it. We walked away. Tough truck. Saved our lifes.
Wish diesels still sounded like diesels. The old ones were honest trucks, nothing fancy and I miss that

The main problem with diesel emissions isn't the co2 it is all of the other particulates that do things like cause cancer, cause smog, lead to birds becoming sick while flying at altitude and much more.

Great review. You buy a truck for a truck not a sedan. Everyone complains about how noisey trucks are. If you want a quite vehicle then buy a car then. If you can't handle a real truck don't buy one. Manufactures now are listening to consumers who don't actually use a truck for a truck.

one of my old co workers claims he bought the first two dodge cummins trucks east of the Mississippi in the Newtown/NYC area. Said he had to pre order them. The dealers barely new anything about it. He remembers pulling up to stop lights and people having no idea what engine it was when it was so new. Kinda cool
When something breaks on the '85, you fix it with a screwdriver, an adjustable wrench, and a rock (for extra torque on the wrench if needed).
When the new one throws error codes and goes into "Limp" mode miles from your nearest Dodge dealer with their $xx,xxx pieces of diagnostics & test software/equipment...
I have noticed that the old Cummins cranks up faster than the newer one. It also sounds better in my opinion.

I’ve drove a 24v 5.9 2000 ram 2500 and it is so much better than any new trucks those are bulletproof engine designs would take that over any never truck.
That's why many people is going back to gas engines... for me, the new workhorses when you don't need stratospheric torque.

@@FirebirdCamaro1220 yeah, but in the old days was because the aggresive enrichment needed, now the gas engines don't need that kind of enrichment, that's why the new Ford 7.3 displacement. In other words, not too many average hp/liter need and you will be ok with gas, for high hp and torque, there's no replacement for displacement; and diesel. Greetings from Costa Rica.

I own a 93 12 valve. It has a pretty nice sound system. I never turn it on. I just love to hear that 12 valve rattle.

I used to drive a 1985 Dodge ram that used to belong to Texas Dot. It was canary yellow and a long bed with no AC. It was ugly but I loved my truck. This 85 brings back memories!!!

That Gen 1 truck was raw and unsophisticated even when it was new! By 1985, that vehicle was already on it’s 14th model year and still had almost another decade to go before being set out to pasture! But I’d take it in a heartbeat over the new Ram it’s being compared to - talk about a fun little truck to tool around in in retirement!

A friend had an old Dodge with a Slant 225, slow as molasses, but easy on fuel and ran trouble free for years and years! You could stand on the flat footed on the ground and reach into the bed, now even 7 footers like Nathan can’t reach into the bed, 5 10 and robust like me forget it, I about have to use a step ladder,,,,,,,never knew my real ladder🙂

I have a not very much messed with 1989 Cummins W250 that my dad brought shortly before he retired from Cummins. Mine doesn't look much different under the hood. He actually built one on an old junker 1975ish half ton Dodge in 1986. He was a shop manager at the time and had his machinists fabricate an adapter plate and custom engine mounts. Instead of the BT6 he used a BT4 test engine that had run something like 10,000 hours on the test stand. He fitted it out with the foil faced foam insulation to try to deaden the noise, but it still sounded like a bulldozer. It was geared in a way that it only had a maximum speed of 60 MPH. When he got his new '89 he passed the homebrew truck to my brother in law, who used it for about 7 years. He moved down south after he retired, so ithe 89 still had a clean body and only 112,000 miles on it when he handed it down to me in 2016.
The old Ram Cummins looks a million times better than the overpriced plastic modern Ram Cummins.
Some of them have gone a million miles too.

This is a throwback to my high school days! I remember going to the local dodge dealer in auto mechanics class to learn how the line techs worked and would see these brand new on the lot in 1985!

That truck could climb like no truck I ever had( was a chevy guy), had three chevy trucks before my work friends dad was selling it and was ordered from factory by him and bought when it had 52000 miles and 5 or 6 years old, it looked exactly like 85 in your video, it made my day to see that truck in your video!

I have an 86 d150 that I bought to tinker on. An it has become my daily driver. Its such a wonderful vehicle to drive, light steering, has that smooth kinda wavy ride. Its a regular cab, long bed royal SE with a 318. It made driving pleasurable, doesn't matter where I'm going it feels like I'm just out for a cruise.
I miss the sound of the old 12 valve Cummins roaring down the road I grew up in those trucks (I drive a 05 Ram Cummins) but I am going to get my 96 Cummins rebuilt but still the 1st gens still look amazing
Back in '88 I worked for San Bernardino County, their pickup fleet consisted of a mix of gas powered Chevys, Ford's, and Dodges. We also had a few of the Cummins Diesels. The one thing I remember most was how loud they were.
O God the original looks so good. You don't see trucks that look that good anymore. I'm a ford guy but I love that Dodge Ram.
The price of a new diesel doesn’t match the capability vs buying an old diesel. They both haul you and your stuff, but one costs 10 times more. You don’t need leather and a touchscreen system to haul your horses or travel trailer to the mountains.

Yes back in the days 1980s. With A/C was a option for sure. I had a 1980 Toyota long bed 4wd. With no power steering 4 speed clutch lifted 3 inches with full leaf springs front and rear. That was great for off road and tough truck low gears. Strong enough for any thing. Off road. Miss the good old days
I had a 1989 D350, they were 10x the trucks that the new ones are! Felt like a truck, worked like a truck, all heavy-duty parts (upgrade WHAT? it started out there!)...and in 1989, For $22k, you could OWN that Cummins D350...try doing that today!!! (I made enough as a machinist to buy almost 3-of-them in ONE YEAR'S SALARY!)...keep the 2021's...I'll take that restored 1985 ANYDAY!!!
I daily drove a 93 d350 12v for years with the 5 speed , i just got a 2004 3rd gen 5.9 common rail i love the power

You cant even hear the new trucks running from the exhaust. But that 12v sounds perfect

I daily drive a 93 first gen W250 with a 5 speed. It’s loud, clunky, not the smoothest but I know I’ll never be stranded or stuck anywhere. It also breaks a lot of necks and gets a lot of attention haha

Looking down the hood at that Ram hood ornament was awesome.
It's amazing the changes in technology and efficiency. The new engine is only eight tenths of a liter in displacement larger, but it has 2 1/2 times the torque and double the horsepower for roughly the same fuel economy.
Most of that is true^^ although the fuel economy in the 85 is hands down better, I'm talking 10 mpg difference
I love those late 80s trucks from Dodge.
I will stay with my old 1994 Cummins any day of the week . no computer and less headache.
I have a 1985 Dodge W350, one ton singetire truck that happens to be same color prospector, but it has a 360 instead of diesel, I've owned for 29 years and never let me down, all but not enough power and they put power ram emblems on it also, the 85 I have is quite rare, has no cat converter but two smog or air pumps, 1/2 and 3/4 tons had cat converter and one smog pump, it also has a Rochester Quad on it, only a few dodges had Rochester carb, they used Carter and Hollie carbs, not chevy mainly carbs on them, I believe around first Dodge pickup to have what has changed very much, electronic ignition with a small CPU, I love my truck just had motor rebuilt to long block and did taking out and all completely apart down to block then put back together and installed myself all by myself. It was kind of tough alone but did it at 63 years old so took a while but runs perfect, I love to drive and think of all the memories me and my two boys had in that truck! Sure wished the paint still looked like the one you showed, sweet truck and great comparison bud, thanks
The 85 all day. I have an 04.5 5.9 and just purchased a 91 square body in all original shape.
I've been called a Luddite, because I'm sooo much happier with my '93 Dodge 250 (5.9 diesel, 4x4, manual trans, 4:10 gears and lockers!) than I ever would be with any of the newer stuff.
I just can't see spending half of what I paid for my house, on a truck. Half the crap in that new truck is completely unnecessary! That's a super sized luxury car, not a true work vehicle.
Gotta love the d350 cummins with the 12v 5.9. It was when a truck was still a truck for work not luxury and you could work on it and no DEF and that old diesel sound. Love it!
Guarntee if you rack up 300,000 miles on both trucks, the old 1985 one is going to be a lot more reliable, way cheaper to service and have a lot less downtime. Yeah the new truck is awesome and very capable, but all that emissions equipment on it is extremely expensive to fix when it breaks.

I love the first gen Cummins Dodge Rams.... Hell, I love them even if they're not Cummins-powered... they're just such an honest, simple pickup... nothing fancy, just a basic truck... and the Ram's head hood ornament is beyond badass. I also like the sound of the first gen better than the current gen Cummins.
I have a 1988 Dodge Dakota LE 2wd, 5 speed manual. Restored from the frame up. Has 120k miles. I love it for driving around 8n the summer.
