  • The church of Santa Maria al Carrobiolo was built in the sixteenth century as a church annexed to the adjacent Barnabite convent that still exists, and preserves inside notable works from the Mannerist era (Simone Peterzano, Moncalvo) and a valuable fresco decoration in Baroque style. The term "Carrobìolo" derives from piccolo carrobbio, that is, a small square for the parking of carriages near the ancient city gates. The first church of Santa Maria del Carrobiolo belonged to the community of the Umiliati delle Sante Agata e Maria and dates back to 1232. In 1571 the complex of the church and its convent was assigned to the Barnabite fathers who, in 1573, began to renovate it, however preserving the structures of the church, the bell tower and the cloister. On 15 June 1584 San Carlo Borromeo consecrated the temple. Among the first paintings commissioned for the decoration of the church were two altarpieces by Simone Peterzano, a Mannerist painter now known as the master of Caravaggio. The facade of the church, dating back to the sixteenth century, is inspired by the mother church of the Barnabite order, San Barnaba in Milan, the work of Galeazzo Alessi. The interior maintains the medieval layout, with three naves, a flat apse and two chapels at the head of the minor naves. The pictorial decorations of the vault were commissioned by the Barnabite Invenzio Montalti, and created by Andrea Porta, for the figures, and by the Varese brothers Giovanni Battista and Gerolamo Grandi, for the architectural quadratures. It is a harmonious example of Lombard baroque, depicting the glorification of the Virgin and Saint Agatha. In the left side aisle, the third span corresponds to the Chapel of the Addolorata (repainted in 1926 by Luigi Morgari) which contains a notable 16th-century Crucifix, attributed to the carver Battista da Saronno, and the polychrome wooden statue of the Addolorata, a work from the 17th century. The Sacred Conversation or Madonna del latte by Simone Peterzano is preserved. The Marriage of the Virgin is the work of Riccardo de’ Tavolini (1608-1678), a little-known painter.
