for me as a german, the first three tips are just common sense... though i don't like these coffee cups and just use a thermos bottle for my tea instead.
and we have to use tote bags because you don't get any free plastic bags anymore if you're shopping. not even at clothes stores. some might give you paper bags but usually you have to pay a few cents for any kind of bag you want to use.
and we have "pfand" (if you buy bottled water or beer or whatever you pay a little bit of money extra and you get that money back when you bring the bottle back to the store.)

Germany sounds just like Switzerland in that case! But when I go to the USA or UK, things are so different.
Nabi Sevim I'm Sorry but the "Pfand" Bootles are not usefull when you like to reduce waste.
If there are made out of glas, it is maybe ok. But think on the costs (for the planet) to run a business, to fill up, to deliver, to get back, to clean, to fill up...
And in Germany the water quality is great!
And the plastik bottles are awful!
Plastik will formed in bottles and after you are done with it and you get your "Pfand" for the empty bottles, they will shred, shiped to China and they melt it and transform it in Polyester Clothes.

I just went to target last night and bought a bunch of peaches from the bulk section and used my new bulk produce bags. I felt so 😎. Until I got to the checkout. The lady looked at me like I had a horn coming out of my head and had to call the manager over to figure out how to charge me for the peaches but not the weight of the bag. And the manager kept saying over and over that she had never encountered someone bringing their own bag and couldn’t figure it out. They ended up giving me a coupon discount but the process was pretty painful. I kept a smile on my face, but seriously? NO ONE has ever brought their own bulk bags to their store?! SAD.

We need hemp based plastic. It is biodegradable and can disintegrate within 80 days.

I never realized how much waste I use. I will talk to my mom and urge her for our family to make less waste than what we do now. It's just unbelievable what is happening to world because of us.
tampon and pads really add up after every period, now I use a menstrual cup and it helps a lot!

I am 17, I have moved out of my Mothers place and I am fixing up a camper my English/health/p.e teacher has kindly offered. I want to make it as minimal waste as possible. I've been a vegetarian for almost 5 years and that in its self has made this process so much easier.
the camper has a small wood stove and I was wondering if any trash I did end up creating could be used as a source of fire energy? I feel it could be helpful in the long run.
I've also have made "blueprints" for an indoor compose and will be building window boxes so I can grow some of my own produce. The camper is off grid and I feel like this is the way I want to live the rest of my life. I just have very little knowledge of how to properly live a zero waste life style. Being an artist and a huge fan of collecting cards, which always comes in the most ridiculous amount of plastic packaging. Channels like yours have helped a lot when trying to figure out how to start the way of zero waste. Thank you!

I've gotten into the habit of taking a reusable bag everywhere since I moved to France! You always have to pay for a paper or plastic bag at the store, so it's so much easier to keep a small reusable one in your purse instead! Thanks for this wonderful video
I'm from Britain and the best thing that's happened here recently was the introduction of a new law that states that all large retail shops must charge 5p for carrier bags. It's made such a huge difference to how many plastic bags we go through, as most people have a stash at home that they take with them shopping!

In France, retailers aren't allowed to give plastic bags either. They can sell reusable bags only (for 5 cents, you get a biodegradable one which you could use a few time and for 50 cents, you get a really strong one that you can use basically forever). It's been a thing for a few years now and even if some people complained at first, now almost everybody thinks it's better.
You just need to think about taking a few bags before going shopping for groceries and you're good !
filiaaut Yeah it was exactly the same here! People complained at first but then realised it really wasn't that big of a deal. And we usually have really strong bags for 10p, 50p, or £1, depending on the shop/bag, but ordinary plastic carrier bags are 5p!
I just recently discovered you, but I have to admit that I just love your sustainable view on the environment! Right now I am changing my life concerning minimalism and zero waste. It's still a long and hard way to go, but it's never to late to start! :) x
One thing that has reduced a ton of waste in my life is my menstrual cup. I don't use any tampons anymore and it's more beneficial for your natural pH down there.

this was so cool for me to watch as person with a non American perspective! I noticed that some of the things that you mentioned here are kind of things that we (indians) do unconsciously...like the taking your own bags to the grocery. veggies and fruits and other fresh produce is bought on the street from small time street vendor, and we generally carry our own bags for the sake of convenience. if you eat street food, youre served in stainless steel plates, glass jugs, simply because it's cheaper. I was telling my dad about this zero waste stuff and he mentioned that when he was a kid, there was if he needed to buy oil or sugar , they'd take their own cans. vendors would make their sales door to door, like even salt, would kind of basically be brought at your doorstep eliminating the need for a means of transportation from the shop to your house. but I guess times are changing now because people are demanding "modernization" and want more packaged products because of their convenience. its really upsetting to see that a lot of indians believe that modernization is equivalent to westernization. :/

Great point about bottled water, I live in Guelph ON Canada and the bottled water here literally is our tap water! it drives me crazy when I see people buy it!
I don't know where you've been asking to use these cups, bottles and containers "people are usually nice"??? Where I live, people are usually really mean or say "it's against store policy." "or "it is a health and safety hazard." "no, we don't do that here."
Hey Vixey, Alexis from the video here! I've had it maybe a handful of times where people have said no, and then I've politely said "I understand your policy, but I'm afraid I will no longer be a customer at your store". That sometimes has changed their mind! If not, I just go somewhere else. The key is persistence!
we dont even have stores where you can fill up individual amounts of food yourself where i live. literally EVERYTHING comes in packaging except for (only some) produce
I've been using glass bottles for my water. If you buy juice, kombucha, iced tea, etc. that comes in a glass bottle, you can just wash it and reuse it forever! I put it in a sock when I throw it in my bag so it doesn't clank on everything. Anyways, if you're tight on money and not ready to dish 20-30$ for a canteen, that's another idea.
Great idea! I did that too but I'm very clumsy and smashed it 🙈 But there is something to suit everyone!
Good idea! My family reuses tubs from yogurt and such to pack lunches, so that's a similar concept.
I was diagnosed as being allergic to plastic the worst is number five the triangle on the bottom has numbers in it one through seven I break out in hives and when I put a straw in my mouth swell up where it's hard for me to swallow I like what these girls are doing it helps me get through the day without plastic in my life in that I am so allergic to it

I like to make tote bags out of shirts I don't wear anymore. plus if you give a friend something you made they are more likely to use it because it's sentimental than if you bought them a tote bag and they feel like you are being preachy.

I just took a fork, a knife, and a spoon for the silverware I already had in my house and wrapped it in some cloth napkins that I made from a t-shirt and then rubber-banded it.

These tips are also great for germaphobes who don't like to use cutlery, or cups from restaurants that might be dirty.
There is so many things I've never thought about creating waste. Watching your videos has pushed me to want to think more about the waste I create and try to cut down.
As an employee of an organic grocery store, much of the things we receive come from quite a distance, and our bulk items are often in bags that can't be recycled. (Specifically tea, spices, and loose veggies.) So, when talking about bulk, have you considered the waste produced by transportation and packaging? Don't get me wrong: this is coming from a place of innocent curiosity because in the U.S., it is much harder to live a completely zero waste life. Thanks!

living a better lifestyle when you don't control the household (aka are a child) is difficult, but I really want tooo!
Hey Krystin! This is Alexis from the video. I know it can be hard, but I started getting interested in waste when I was in school! I started first by showing my parents that I was really interested (and that it wasn't just a phase) - that meant doing things that were in my control, like using my canteen and tote bag. Then I did the research to find environmentally friendly shopping techniques and went with my parents to do groceries and helped guide their choices! I don't know if it's just in the UK but I've heard the government are putting a ban on the use of microbeads in products like toothpaste because of the effect on the environment 😊
I put my tea bags in my compost bin where I live in England it's compulsory to recycle which is really good

I LOVE Lush shampoo bars! They are the BEST! I just can't go back to liquid shampoo knowing how much i'm saving and how compact and easy they are! Travelling with them is so easy!! No need to buy travel size as it literally is travel size but has the same usage as a full size shampoo! 😊
I did a summer program focused on turtle conservation which has gotten me interested in zero wast living, but one of the big things that they emphasized was how horrible plastic straws are for turtles.

This was a great video! I love that you make the point that even a few habits can make a big difference, because not everyone will have all options available to them. If you want people to join a course, make it easy and appealing, and teach them how, rather than scolding them for not doing it or knowing how. Thanks for the tips.

People are definitely NOT as open and welcoming in the US. I'm not totally zero waste but I always have my own shopping bag and I've had cashiers refuse to use it or ignore me when I ask them to use it instead of a plastic one. I've brought produce bags to bulk areas of healthfood stores (that supply little plastic bags to use with them) and I got yelled at for using my own. I can't imagine bringing my own boxes to a takeout place. They'd probably refuse to serve me. I think people in the US are super anal about bacteria and health codes and stuff.

Skipper Green you have to be persistent. People in the US are taught that we are the best country and it's fine to throw things away. We are vastly uneducated about the horrible things we do to our planet. You will be made fun of, ESPECIALLY in conservative states or southern states. I live in Texas and I know I will get shit for it. But you have to be as persistent as they are.
I have lived in 3 US states and showed at numerous stores, restraunts, and markets. I have never once had someone refuse or even care I was using my own bags and containers for general shopping, fruit, and grain. Many give you a discount. I have handed over reusable cups, water bottles and bento boxes to be used with no issue. One time the kid at the counter looked at me weird and asked a co-worker if it was okay but that was it. I have never lived in a progressive eco focused town either.
I don't know where you were but the US is massive and your experience is not indicative of the country as a whole. Based on my 10 years of shopping this way in numerous states I would say it is uncommon to have an issue. Hope you have a better experience in the future.

yeah same.. i hope they talk about that (and cloth pads). pads and tampons make a lot of waste and you can decrease it really easily.

Just say that you don’t need a plastic back? In Germany you have to pay a little extra for plastic bags👍🏻Btw I’m pretty sure in nearly every town is a store where they doesn’t pack everything in plastic. Just google for it.

Thought I should add that each person's need of these items are very individual. "Get to know your garbage" what are the typical items that you throw away? Find a way to reduce those specific garbage items. Don't fall into the consumer trap and buy stuff you don't need just because someone says "this is the essentials for minimalism/zero waste." The biggest essential of zero waste and minimalism is the mindset.

I really want to start a zero waste journey/life as soon as possible but right now I live with my grandparents and we already have tons of reusable plastic containers, things in plastic packaging and just things like that. I realized it would be even worse for me to trash all of these things because 1 my family still wants to use them (there’s brands they like, things they’re comfortable with, etc) and 2 I’d just be throwing away more plastic which would kind of defeat the purpose I think.
Ive decided to start making little improvements now though like switching to lush shampoo bars and conditioner instead of continuing to buy plastic bottles and I’m going to start making some of my own bathroom products and cosmetics as I finish off the products I currently own. Once I move into my tiny house though I’ve decided that I want to have a zero waste (or atleast as little as possible) home. #Life goals.

If I ever met someone as dedicated and enthusiastic about zero wasting, I would never consider them weird or annoying, if anything I would feel admiration for them. I will try to do most of these and little by little change my bad habits. Thank you for sharing.

I wish like ANYTHING that stores where I am would sell in bulk and allow me to use my containers. The coffee shop won't accept cups but that's cool - I save money now that I don't patronize them anymore, lol

I'm so glad I found you and your channel. I am very excited to see how much of a difference I can make with living zero waste. Right now it is hard for my boyfriend and i to live this lifestyle just because the area we live in don't have any close place to buy package free items or bulk organic items. We try to buy as much plastic free and or minimally packaged foods but again every grocery store we have near us doesn't have ideal items. Just so you know; often bulk stores aren’t called bulk stores, and sometimes you can sneak them out (like when I’m in London I go to Whole Foods which isn’t a ‘bulk’ store but they sell weighable/unpackaged grains, peanut butter, and tea! In Spain plastic bags are still a huge problem, cause whenever you go shopping, even if you just buy one thing, they give you a plastic bag...

Hi! Alexis from the video here. Absolutely! However, I was previously living on an island in the middle of the Indian Ocean working on plastic pollution issues and I just boiled/filtered my water to avoid using plastic bottles! It can be done :)

I went to visit China a few months ago and despite the smog and bad environment caused by the factories the people are all very environmentally conscious, you bring your own containers for take out, and they charge a lot of money for plastic bags and containers

I live for my Lush shampoo bars!! I used to work a camp job and they lasted forever and with the metal travel tin you have no bottles. I won't go back to bottles after trying the bars!

I think I have always been a minimalist, I thought I was just being thrifty but then we can be a hoarder at times thats why I am on the process of this again..

You forgot something very important: if you're a student use your tablet instead of printing out everything. Also go for e-books instead of printed ones
Love the video. In Vegas we can't drink our tap water, but I do carry a canteen everywhere in hopes of finding filtered water.
I highly recommend a titanium spoon/fork/knife combo from Light My Fire. They're about 10$ and won't break if it ends up under something heavy in your bag.

i love your videos i started watching them after watching a ted talk about it and i find it very interesting, i am way not there yet but since i lived a semester in germany i started to stop asking for bags in my supermarket here in colombia where its free. and i also do tip number one most of the time, please keep posting more and i feel like this would be a great business idea here where i live theres only one store for bulk and i think it makes so much sense to stop using packaging, i wonder if there is a way to work with companies to help them become zero waste, like for example i love khiels and would love to buy in bulk my favorite products from them. anyways sorry for the long comment keep on making more videos!!

I personally like to buy my shampoo bars and soaps from my local zero waste shop rather than Lush. Purely because that way, I'm supporting a small business rather than a big brand.

Have you tried filtering it? Mine is similar (totally safe and usable, just gross) and I started filtering it, and it's still not the best-tasting water, but totally bearable.

jayden bundy some places you can just refuse. They'll still print it and put it in the trash though so I'm not sure.. you can request that they send you an email instead, but that's just at very progressive places. It's still a huge problem
