The first big regional, Broadway-style touring show I ever saw was Hello Dolly starring Pearl Bailey (I was 8). I should add, we always had the Pearl/Cab Calloway cast album at home, not the Carol Channing version). However, for the tour instead of the all-black version on the album, the show featured completely color-blind casting, which was pretty cool for 1976. I remember that there was a man just ahead of us in the theater who screamed and yelled so loudly that she stopped the show to calm him down; he begged her "one more time?" and she honored his request...the whole cast reset and they did the Hello Dolly number all over again, mid-show.

Hello Dolly is really one of the most progressive musicals ever made but it does it so subversively that you almost miss it. Think about it, Dolly Levi is a widowed middle-aged woman who is financially independent and comes and goes wherever she pleases. She helps everyone she meets with whatever they need and gets everyone to enjoy life. Yet with all that she does she says "I'm ready to join the human race again," because she knows deep down that she's not living life to fullest that she can live it. She doesn't tell this to anyone in the entire musical and she doesn't have to, its soley her journey that she's focused on. She knows she has to be able to stand on her own two feet before she can move on and be in love again. She could walk into Harmonia Gardens restaurant with Horace but she doesn't. She walks in alone and celebrates it. "Dolly wil never go away" isn't saying she won't go away from Harmonia Gardens, but she won't go away again from truly being herself at her fullest. Its such a powerful message and universal. We all need to know ourselves well enough to know when we aren't living live to its fullest and on our own terms and what we need to do to be happy for ourselves.

Interesting point about how adding Penny in My Pocket could shift the balance of Act 2 away from Cornelius & co. Having seen the show, Penny was done in front of the main curtain and addressed directly to the audience. After that, it was curtain up into Elegance. To me (and I was probably not thinking as deeply about it as you've been), it felt like Telly in Matilda before When I Grow Up - even though it's coming after the intermission, it still felt like it was "before" Act 2... if that makes sense?
Either way, it was a great character moment for David Hyde Pierce and Horace.

"What's her name... Minnie???" Minnie is the best character!

I don't believe there's ever been a production of Hello Dolly that truly honours the character offered in the script. She keeps asking her dead husband to release her - from what? It seems that she has a pretty damned good life full of colour and sparkle. If, however, she started out dressed in mourning black and somewhat more reserved than she's usually played, it would lend more weight to her pleas and make the transformation at the Harmonia Gardens all the better...

"Before the Parade Passes By" is central to my concept of Dolly Levi. Yes, she's meddlesome and garrulous but she's still in mourning for her husband, wears black and shuns the glittery nightlife that she adored with her husband. She yearns to break free from those restrictions but won't until she gets a sign from Ephram. "Before the Parade" is a deciding point to make that change.

I'm currently working in a production of Hello, Dolly, and I see where you're coming from! I actually agree, but I want to play a little devil's advocate here:
I almost wonder if all the glamour and meddling is an escape; she can help others find love, but emotionally she's still so tied to Ephraim that she can't help herself find love again. So each time she talks to Ephraim, she's begging him to help her out, like how Ermengarde and Ambrose beg Dolly to help them with Horace. She wants his help to present an opportunity that will make it easier on her emotionally to find love again.

I'd rather see Elegance at the Tony's. It's such a beautiful, hilarious nugget of that whirlwind courtship that always felt to me like the "A Plot" of the show. But I agree! Penny in my Pocket would be great for posterity.

I don't think of it as a show that has been revived to death. I could have sworn this was the first Dolly revival that didn't star the original musical, Dolly, Carol Channing. Isn't Midler the first Dolly to be eligible for a Tony other than Channing?

I managed to do standing room only for Hello Dolly recently and here are a couple of things I'd say about them performing at the Tony's. First off, I know it'd be nice to have a recorded performance of Penny in My Pocket, but in the show, it's pretty much just David Hyde Pierce walking out in front of the curtain and singing it with some light staging, but it's not really the song I'd perform (but then again, most of the songs I'd have performed require Bette so :/ ) Secondly, in my show, Bette Midler did flub lines, and she vocally told the audience that she did, rewound the scene, and started over. Now there was huge applause and cheers at my show but that wouldn't really translate quite as well on Tony night, and from the few things I can find online show that this happens fairly frequently (not like once a week or anything, but it has happened on multiple occasions). If that's not the reason why Bette isn't going up though, I don't really get the stage not being safe complaint. If they did "Parade Passes By", then there's a small bit where Bette jumps over the pit and onto the other side of the stage so perhaps that's it, but they could have just changed the blocking a bit to have her walk around the pit. Not as showy, but it's fine. Anyway, sorry for this block of text, hope this was at least somewhat interesting!

Why is she routinely forgetting lines? Lack of study / professionalism? Nerves? Memory loss as a result of her getting older? I wonder.

this is by no means a critique, but there wasn't much discussion of the actual cast album's dynamics here, more just some show choices, which is fine, I just found it curious...

Obviously the reason Dolly is a big hit is because Bette Midler is in it. It falls into her wheelhouse of talents. She can sing and make people laugh for 3 hours. You would think the Tony Committee would bend over backwards for a star of her stature. I did hear Bette say early on she was getting familiar with the stage, so I think your theory is right.

I can't believe I upvoted a video that suggested that Carol Channing's performance can only barely be considered singing. If her performance isn't considered singing, then I can't say I've ever sung with her.
