We don't need a tunnel from France to Quebec.
There is a French Ovsrseas Territory Island near Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada called St. Pierre et Miquelon. It is a small island.
There are some Canadian imported vehicles with US sized French license plate and also Euro French vehicles from France right here in SPM.

Most Anglos are racists. Totally right. And they want the whole World to be like them, speak like them and think like them. They've been isolated on their islands from the rest of the world and when they ventured out, they used slaves to build their empires. There are a nasty bunch of arrogant bastards!

The people of Québec will of course, like people everywhere, want to maintain culture, tradition and language. They have a very vibrant and lively culture, which is a good start. I wish them well. I hope they can find a way to preserve everything through judicious compromises rather than procrustean lawmaking. They will go a long way toward their goal of cultural preservation if they also find a way to preserve the good will and friendship of their neighbors.

I'm bilingual and live in Quebec. I have an accent when I speak French. As soon as people hear it, they insist on speaking English with me. Even when I insist that they speak French, they slip back into English. If the population isn't willing to speak the language, no amount of legislation will help it. If the culture is so weak that it cannot survive, let it die.

You misunderstand the reason why this happens. They feel you're not comfy in french and switch to English to make the interaction more effective. The same thing happens in France, it has nothing to do with what you're saying, it's actually a sign of respect, not the same kind the francophones get when they are in anglophone areas.

I had experienced the same when on a school trip to Quebec. They would not speak it to me and it feels awkward to keep speaking my second language in reply to my first. I get the same thing in NB sometimes too. They ask if I speak French in French and when I say I do they switch to English. At my work a woman of Haitian origin, who moved here from France, has the same trouble. Her accent is not Acadien but when they switch to English she understands little as she is learning still.

Here the thing Quebec if you want to keep the french language. The best thing you can do is to let French flow naturally, a language has to flow naturally it can't be forced. French will always come first in Quebec same as english comes first in USA, which is ok since you french fought to keep Quebec. But you have got to stop making fun of french speakers outside of quebec and embrace them instead. Also stop forcing french on the anglos, they have to want to to learn that language.

  • @MsColdCanada
    @MsColdCanada 11 лет назад +1

No. You should encourage the growth of your culture by providing education and funding to spread and share your culture with others. That would be a far better thing than becoming xenophobic and punishing other cultural groups with language fines. If Quebec would reach out instead of lash out then there would be more willingness among other Canadians to embrace and help preserve the French language. Et oui, je parle Francais, mais tu ne m'accepterai jamais.

And there's nothing wrong with that - Oh, I forgot. There is in Quebec.
How can an immigrant become fluent in French and be aware of Quebec culture when the " quebecois" tend to keep their distances from everyone with the " wrong " accent and don't like to share their " rich" culture with anyone else?

There should be equality between each and every individual. And yet in Quebec, there's always mention of " member of a cultural community" or " member of a visible minority". Each and every immigrant I've met would rather be called by his or her name.
What about YOUR values? I hear a lot about them, but people mention it at will but end up never saying what they actually are.

I think the "threat" is being exaggerated to justify political action. If all were "fine" then what would the PQ talk about? They have a vested interest in keeping the pot stirred. I sometimes took a bit of flack from school kids about immersion as well. It turns out when you question those kids as adults that they are jealous and felt the immersion group was treated better and differently. I'm partial to les Acadiens over Quebecois but would not like either cultural group to disappear.

He was losing in the France election polls, so he made his great statement, which Quebec Separatists and Nationalists took to be support form him and france for the Separatist cause. Why he really said it was so his poll numbers would go up in France. The statement made him look like a political strongman.

I agree that it is helping and it is enough because the hard approach creates division instead of cultural growth. You did misunderstand. As for my prejudices, I'm happy for your marriage but your experience must be different from my personal experience as I have experienced a great deal of nasty comments and attitudes as an anglophone in NB who tries my very best to speak french. I took it as immersion education from grade one and yet I encounter so much hate and scorn I feel like giving up.

The thing is that this sort of thing seems to only happen in the Montreal area. It doesn't really happen in other parts of Quebec (maybe Gatineau?) Montreal is not a French-speaking city, but it's not an English-speaking city. It's a bilingual city. And the immigrants who prefer to work in English are usualy from countries where English has a history there. Someone from a country that's more tied to the French language (like Algeria for example), will be closer to French.

“Påte” is to me what “pasta” is when mixing before fabrication. Franglais is still getting out of control, but many international loanwords are untranslatable, especially in cuisine.

French is only spoken in France. Metis French and Quebecois French are spoken in Canada. Cajun French is spoken in Louisiana. Appalachian English is spoken in the U.S., but is almost exclusively spoken in the UK by professional entertainers respectfully practicing their craft. Ergo, most Quebecois do not speak French.

I am truly astonished that the French have so little cleverness...
You reproach us - very inappropriately - and tell us that our country is a little hell in contrast with France, which you compare to a terrestrial paradise. If this is true, why did you leave it? Why did you abandon your wives, children, relatives, and friends?

the problem with english-speaking people is that many of them dont consider other lenguages because their lenguage is the most important in the world, ok it is but you have to respect other lenguages, sadly french in north America will disapear because inmigrants go there and for example if they are chinese they obviously will choose the english just because it is more useful, and with french-speaking population declining.... french in north America wont survive

Bullshit. Quebec have the biggest immigration of Germans, Italians, Mexicans, Romanians, Haitians and Frances of Canada. All those people live very happy in the province. English minority if the most well treated community in Quebec compared of how French minority is treated in the ROC where they have to fight all the time to get their rights respected..

You know what Quebec should do to gain more French speakers? Government officials should drop their racist policies and attitudes (in school and everyday life). Being a French speaking Canadian who's lived in Quebec (Montreal) let's just say they are unaccepting of non-quebecois folks. So much so that French speakers migrate to non-French speaking provinces and learn ENGLISH. I love our language but if you wanna make a living elsewhere you gotta speak English and leave French.

You talk rubbish. You don't know anything regarding teaching of foreign languages. English has the most difficult pronunciation to learn and to memorize. The English pronunciation is chaotic and confusing. Why is the pronounced 'a' of Italy different from the pronounced 'a' of Italian? It is totally illogical to pronounce these two words in a different way. For us non-native English-speaking foreigners it is very, very difficult to memorize every English word. That's why we mispronounce the English words very often. Conversely, the French, German, Spanish, Italian pronunciations are very easy, compared to the English one. No doubt about it!
