I am visiting this video again as I advance my ukulele skills, and amid an ever troubling world, it is delightful to watch, listen and learn from Mr. Barry Maz here. I've said it before but I'll say it again, thank you Mr. Maz, for this video and your endless effort to review and educate people about ukuleles and music via the internet and RUclips. You are truly a king among men, sir. Cheers, from across the pond in rural Ontario, Canada. In my household, you are more a celebrity name than the richest actors of Hollywood. You may not be an exuberantly wealthy man in the monetary sense (you may be, I know not), but I consider you exuberantly wealthy in spirit, and you certainly lift mine spirits here at home. Thank you again, good sir. I retire this message to another few fingers of scotch, and some plunking on one of many cheap but enjoyable ukuleles.
Was it hard when you originally started to try singing while playing? I find them to be (thus far), like oil and water. I instantly forget the one when I do the other. I instantly lose the rhythm (or never had it to begin with haha).
Charlie Skinner ok here’s the question I posted: Ok ok I got the strummed tune down but I’m having a tiny bit of trouble with the Creep song. I sure hope you can help because I’m going nuts over something so simple. Anyway: I got the “c” part just fine but when we get to the E7,F and Fm I cannot tell what strings you’re picking? Or do we just strum those last 3chords? Thankyou for helping!
Thanks for this. In my Uke club, we seem to play quite a few songs with a F major to F minor progression. Our lead Uke is a professional music teacher and he suggests for beginners to put the pinky down on the 3rd fret just prior to the chord change and this allows you to change to the minor chord more easily as you only have to concentrate on the index and middle finger change. I've found it works really well.
😱 I can’t believe it took me so long to find this video!!!! I have been trying to dissect the chords on the reviews but couldn’t get it thank you for doing this video!
Seriously, thank you for the video. I know I've been one of the many, MANY people who have asked, but getting to see Creep broken down was really nice.
It was a treat to hear you sing, as well. Love your video reviews. I bought the Kala Ziricote Tenor because of your review. I am quite delighted with it. So thanks.
I love your version of Creep. You are quite patient teaching us your signature songs. I enjoy your channel. I'm a 3 day newbie glued to RUclips learning different philosophies on ukulele strumming, plucking, chording. 🤞🏼I think I'm getting it with sore fingers.😄Thanks for your help.
I think I must have forgotten to comment on this . This is absolutely great lesson and you are a really good uke player and I love your version of these songs
Thanks for this! I resisted asking as I knew someone else must have done it, and found your link to this video. Great demo! Your voice is a lot better than another popular uke channel instructor!
Keep up the good work, been drooling over the Uke's in your reviews. I have just ordered my first Uke after many weeks head scratching, can't wait to start learning!
oh wow the chord sequence is actually really easy and sounds SO impressive!!! I'm so looking forward to practising that up and my friends will think I can actually really play the ukulele lmao.
You English people never cease to surprise me...a song from 1922, wow!!!! Great tutorial Barry, you are truly a unique kind of person, well done, Bravo!!!! By the way, I was one of the many that wrote to you once, asking about the song.
They came about more about the sound of them and them being relatively simple . I wanted a simple catchy strum pattern and a simple catchy fingerpicked run that used some higher notes. Yes, the strum is a VERY old song! But neither were intended to be complex - I don't see the value in a ukulele review being someone playing something intensely difficult that 99% of viewers will NEVER want to play.. Thanks Davide!
You probably already know, but Ukulele Orchestra if Great Britain just posted a fantastic version of Shimmy Like My Sister Kate. I was not familiar with the song until i found your channel years ago. Now it's a regular in my set list. Thanks
Barry - you are great! Read a lot of your reviews - totally inspiring! Learn so much about this instrument(s) - and the spirit of them. I tried to figure out what you were playing in your reviews - took me 2 month to find this u-t-flic, eventually. Thanks a lot - and continue doing what yo do!
I WAS going to ask for this video, because I DID look a bit at your youtube site but couldn't find it (so many videos), but I finally found it this morning. Funny you made this 5 years ago. Thanks!
Love all your reviews Barry. Relaxed & to the point. Great to finally get the chords etc to these, for me a mere beginner since June - and hear your vocals! Just bought Kindle of your combined book , BTW !!
I've watched many of your videos and i was like: wait a minute i've heard that song but i can't remember the name...now i know :) . Thank you for sharing your knowledge and Sir your voice is lovely.
Many thanks Baz for your many informative you tubes on brand ukuleles. I am fairly new to ukuleles having bought a tanglewood tenor. I have come across from guitar cos the ukulele is easier to take to work and practice. The best ukulele version of Sister Kate (I wish I could shimmy like my)....wirral ukulele orchestra.
Great! Well done. I am sure that answers a lot of questions. I 'm going to try it out. Seems simple enough and it does help playing the same songs on every review. At least it does for me. Thank you!
Thanks man. That's appreciated. I should probably do more playing and singing. Actually it's not my comfort area purely as regards tuition - I would rather stick to what I do and defer to better teachers than I when it comes to lessons (if you can call this a lesson). Used to be totally in my comfort zone in terms of playing and singing and in fact there are plenty of me on RUclips hidden somewhere in a different channel with my old band. Used to love recording our gigs. Just not done it for a long while and stopped as my toddler daughter was growing and I needed to give her more time at weekends... Never fazes me singing - just recognise that now my pipes are a bit rusty!
Thanks for this Baz. I loved 'Creep' when I watched your resonator review video (Thanks for that - I just bought a gorgeous Beltona and am loving it!) and am now really enjoying playing it. You taught Creep so well and your arrangement is so lovely - do you have any more??????
I love your videos, your reviews, your style of telling, you English (yes, even for improving listening, thanks!) and also I have enjoyed a lot learning these two melodies (newbie in the ukelele world). In the reviews, for the strumming part you end the song with some notes not included in this tutorial, they are using your middle finger covering the whole second fret, but no matter how I try not possible to get the same notes. Don´t sure if you cover completely the 2nd fret or not and what are you freeing partially when lifting the finger quickly... :( Just in case this part is explained elsewhere.... thanks a ton again for your help. Ukelele community will thank you your work for ever.
It's just how I play - I am actually lifting off the 1st string by bending the barre finger up - takes practice and not that traditional a way of playing..
OK I'm learning this song now, the Shimmy like my Sister Kate song. It's fun tho my fingers muddled up in places. But it's always good to learn something new
I must’ve watched more of your videos than is healthy, because every time I pick up my uke and lazily strum the open strings to check the tuning I’ve got a fierce urge to progress into your strumming song...

Great comment. I could not have put it better myself.
This is great. When someone asks you to play something this combo will really impress them!
Thanks!
I never realized that was Creep. I really like that arrangement.
It's not the regular key, but I always played it like that on stage as it suited my voice register more. Also helps with that run up the A string
Me neither. I was noodling around on my uke and started playing the run thinking it was from the GaU original.
Was it hard when you originally started to try singing while playing? I find them to be (thus far), like oil and water. I instantly forget the one when I do the other. I instantly lose the rhythm (or never had it to begin with haha).
