I spend a lot of time thinking about what is wrong with our hobby - all the things that we could be doing to better the lives of our animals but aren’t. I look at my own enclosures and know that they could be so much bigger, better laid out, and better lit (no matter how confident I am about a lighting setup when I install it, it generally isn’t more than a few months before I know how I could improve it). Then, when I go online and hear about racks, heatmats, and how “SnAkEs HaVe No UsE fOr Uv”, it makes me despair. It is nice, then, to be able to look at images like these and know that we are at least heading in the right direction: long may it continue!

My favorite way to provide hides and usable surface area increasing the floor space of an enclosure is stacks of staggered cork flats which works great for a number of species. Under the bottom pieces you can throw in some damp moss for humidity.
This was incredible!! It's so exciting to see first time keepers setting the bar so high. There is really no reason at all why there should be this preconception that we can keep reptiles without adequate substrate, enrichment etc. As I have said before, I definitely feel that their unbelievable resilience to survive is their biggest downfall in the pet keeping industry. But anyway, what a standard to start with! (as a fishkeeper I also would love for the fad of "ornamental" or "contemporary" aquariums to phase out as they're just boxes of water with nothing for the fish to interact with). Also, amazing to see families growing up with this kind of thing! It seems more and more of the old fashioned myths are being challenged too, and look what we get out of that when it's done properly. Hopefully we'll leave those people in the dust and keep moving onwards and upwards. Fantastic stuff! I will be there for part two haha
I definitely agree with the fish tank situation in this comment, we have 14 fish tanks, we dump a load of planted substrates in a load of bogwood, as many plants as would be natural and just let the tanks go wild as they would be in nature, and I think that's how they should be, none of this crystal clear water, we let the algae grow, loads of botanicals to stain the water and give the fish the most natural set up possible

Hey Matt. The ackie tank is mine. It's kind of difficult to type this but I will try.. The tank topper was designed by me and made by a metal fabricator. @@AnimalsatHomePodcast thank you sir! I couldn’t find a definitive on the internet but that way makes the most sense. You don’t have any trouble keeping temps up? Big fan of the podcast and channel btw. I’ve been learning. A LOT from here as I prepare to do my first bioactive setup.
Glad to hear you are enjoying the show, thank you for listening to it! And nope, I don't have any temperature issues. I keep my reptile room between 23-27 C so that helps keep things stable.
Great video as always! Btw inkbird makes a similar product to the sensor push that’s much less expensive. I’m not sure if it is as good as the sensor push but will save you about 30 bucks per sensor.
Thanks, Jack! Ohh interesting, I'll look into that. I use the Inkbird thermostats, even though they are quite inexpensive I have had lots of success and zero issues with them
@@AnimalsatHomePodcast I use their thermostats too. I also use their smart outlets. All of them interface through the same app which is sick. It’s like the apple of reptilian electrical control lol.
When you say that a wooden enclosure would rot for a brazilian rainbow boa, do you mean just any plain wooden enclosure or a sealed one? I use a water based sealant on my wooden enclosures (silicone too) that I house my ball pythons in and I don't have any rotting issues.
Yeah I mostly mean unsealed word or melamine. Normal plywood/lumber that has been sealed typically holds up perfectly fine and humidity. I find pressboard/melamine tends to swell and crumble overtime in high humidity environments
@@AnimalsatHomePodcast I honestly think that's something people forget to talk about, and end up accidentally discouraging people from getting wood enclosures even though it may be some people's only choices in upgrading. I would like to think that MOST people would know to seal wooden enclosures tbh, tho I know there are some morons out there
I wish more people did bioactive tarantula setups. My pink toes been in bioactive for a year. Just be careful what isopods you use as they will eat the tarantula in molt D: avoid scabbers
Yeah I think many people don't even think about going bio-active for tarantulas... I think they suit bio-active setups perfectly! Great tip re: the isopods...I didn't know that 😮
I spent at least 2 years researching bio, and every time I learnt something it just raised more questions. Defo no isopods in there, just springtails and a few earthworms.
Hi, great video! I still love finding inspiration for future builds. I've recently started a RUclips channel revealing all my reptile product building secrets. Just thought it may be useful to yourself and subscribers on how to do rock feature builds step by step from an Australian perspective 🙂 Thanks again for some good content!
I have a junvinile redfoot in a 4ft X 3ft raised garden bed enclosure with a green house for humditity she has a baried hide a rock a branch to scartch herself and another rock for food, other then that a whole lot of room. How can make this more creative for my animal. Tried a bunch of different ideas amd nothing can up hold her trampling (anyone who asked no we dont have a water dish) we found while talking to the vet she would lay in it till she would get sick and refuse to bask we opted for soaks a couple times a week to keep her hydrated and regulated more. Alao humdity is 75-85% so it isnt due to lack of humdity
Hi Tristan, thanks for the comment. I wish I knew more about tortoises so I could help you out! I have two thoughts: 1) google pictures of their natural environment (iNaturalist is great for this), it might help you brain storm some new ideas, 2) I would add more hides/shelters... it's hard to say way she would spend so much time in her water dish but it might be due to her feeling insecure.
Haha I know right?! They must have some great greenhouses near by. One of the submitters says he gets all his plants from a place called "Bioactive Herps" but that is in the UK (not sure where you are located)
I'm in Calgary (hi neighbour!) we have a couple of cute nurseries - and Pisces - but Greengate's the only greenhouse I can think of. Maybe I need to start asking the house plant community
I get all of mine through ebay or garden centres xD my window ledges look like jungles as I have so many quarentining before I can use them, but once you start buying them it becomes an unhealthy addiction LOL
You could send it to me via email (link in bio) but honestly, it’s been a very long time since I’ve done with these videos, so I doubt I will do one in the near future! But it’s still love to see your set up

@@derekhipsman2480 dont suppose you documented the build? That would be amazing to see, if anyone wants I simple version of this tank to get an idea on how to diy habistat enclosures have a similar sort of set up with their flat packed glass enclosures
First time on your channel, good video. Maybe I'll send you mine for the next one of these
Welcome to the channel! I hope you have some time to check out the other content. Just an FYI, the podcast can be found on any podcasting app (if you'd rather not listen to the episodes on RUclips).
my fave was the last ball python enclosure ❤
Good video I got a lot of ideas for my tank
Thanks for watching!
When doing a PVC bioactive cage. Should the high vents be on the hot side or the cool side(with the low vents vise versa of course)?
I always put my high vents on the warm side 👍🏼
@@AnimalsatHomePodcast thank you sir! I couldn’t find a definitive on the internet but that way makes the most sense. You don’t have any trouble keeping temps up? Big fan of the podcast and channel btw. I’ve been learning. A LOT from here as I prepare to do my first bioactive setup.
Glad to hear you are enjoying the show, thank you for listening to it! And nope, I don't have any temperature issues. I keep my reptile room between 23-27 C so that helps keep things stable.
Thanks for the kind words. Keep up the great channel!
Thanks for sending in the pictures, Derek! As I said in the video, very very well done enclosure!
@@AnimalsatHomePodcast This was by far my favorite! This guy has amazing talent. The Big name zoo's should get in touch with him!
@@erinhipsman6828 I agree! Incredible work!
So many good ideas! My first effort are so pathetic.
Haha yeah I think everyone’s first enclosures are quite sad 😂
Great video
Thank you for watching, Natalia :)
@Jack Oliver Except, not an Apple pricepoint (thank god) 😂
@@AnimalsatHomePodcast 😂😂very true the ~socially responsible~ apple
I would like to think that MOST people would know to seal wooden enclosures tbh, tho I know there are some morons out there
Yeah that’s a very good point, next time I do a video like this I’ll make sure to mention that!
@@danielwilliams4574 Dwarf whites are fine but I would stay away from powder blues, dairy cows etc
@@feral7094 thanks, it's our first T so still lots to learn
@@danielwilliams4574 No problem man, glad to help :)
Way late to this but here's some of mine
My favorite enclosure is #5
That is a great one!
Hi, great video! I still love finding inspiration for future builds.
I've recently started a RUclips channel revealing all my reptile product building secrets. Just thought it may be useful to yourself and subscribers on how to do rock feature builds step by step from an Australian perspective 🙂
Thanks again for some good content!
Awesome, I’ll check it out!
@@AnimalsatHomePodcast no worries! 🤗
If I had a question on tortoises, I'd ask Chris at Garden State Tortoises.

I want to know where these people find gorgeous mature plants for their terrariums!
Where would i send a picture of my enclosure to you?
You could send it to me via email (link in bio) but honestly, it’s been a very long time since I’ve done with these videos, so I doubt I will do one in the near future! But it’s still love to see your set up
Jeez, why can't we have metric in the US?! Then I wouldnt be clueless when people talk centimeters lol. Why can't we have nice things here!
Yeah… The US really needs to get with the program! Metric is so much easier
"Yeah I'm not a morph guy but look at that img boa" 😅😅😅 gtfoh you can't withstand the IMG, no one can. Those Boas blow every other snake out of the water
Jesus loves you and died on a cross and rose three days later taking our place and paying our debt (for the wages of sin is death) so you can have eternal life and be forgiven of sin if you repent and pick up your cross and follow him daily
Excellent post!!! I loved every minute of it! It did, however, take me more than a minute to figure out how to spell Eurydactylodes! Wiki has a nice article on what is called the chameleon gecko. They had the same photo you showed, in fact.
en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eurydactylodes
Yeah, they are an awesome genus! I was able to spend some time with them at Mike Tytula’s place back in September. Thanks for watching! 😁
