Beethoven-Liszt - Symphony 9 (Molto vivace) - Cyprien Katsaris Piano

- This is the second movement. Cyprien Katsaris included notes for instruments that Liszt left out in certain passages. This makes it a more accurate transcription, but also more difficult to perform.
Cyprien Katsaris is an immortal keyboard giant.
mortal piano human
He's from my country. The island of Cyprus!
Breathtaking. All three men.. Geniuses
wdym all three only one is playing and that pianist is katsaris
@@Damian_Theodoridis 3 men referring to beethoven, liszt, and katsaris
The one named first towers over the other two
I can hear the faint sounds of the orchestral sounds through the piano.
Pianists can
I hear an orchestral texture, not just in symphony transcriptions, but also in quite a few of Beethoven's piano sonatas, most notably, his Pathetique Sonata. In fact, this hearing of an orchestral texture is what prompted me to arrange the Pathetique Sonata for an actual orchestra. I have had to redo it once now and I think I will have to redo it again. But I think the first orchestral arrangement I will complete is a Mozart arrangement, specifically an arrangement of Eine Kleine Nachtmusik for a symphony orchestra, keeping to a conservative, Mozartian instrumentation, instead of the vast expanse of the modern orchestra that is the instrumentation that fits the Pathetique Sonata.
@@caterscarrots3407 brilliant idea, sir, all the best for your great work.
No you don't. You just know the symphony because you have heard the orchestral part and you think you hear it through the piano.
@@ClaudioArrau Then what do you think of the Pathetique Sonata in terms of its texture?

Listen to the first movement especially. You hear that? It sounds like Beethoven bringing the power, texture, and sonority of the orchestra to piano solo doesn't it? There are other sonatas by Beethoven that have a similar power and texture to the orchestral one in the Pathetique Sonata. Symphony transcriptions likewise have an orchestral texture, and not just because they were written originally for orchestra, but also because the texture of a symphony transcription and the texture of an orchestral sounding piano sonata(such as the Pathetique Sonata) are very similar.
He's an amazing pianist.
Cziffra is too

This is one of the few times hearing a performance on RUclips compelled me to go by the CDs. I got the complete set of piano transcriptions of the Beethoven symphonies, played by Cyprien Katsaris.
Here's the thing: *ALL HIS PERFORMANCES OF THE SYMPHONIES ARE THIS GOOD!*
@5:09 I had a Liszt - "Wilde Jagd" moment. ♪♪♫

I was waiting for the broken minor scale in the lower register to show up, then I remembered I wasn't listening to the wild jagd..
Incredible performance - bravissimo!
Ah. Windows XP nostalgia hits strong
I am adding this to my playliszt!
i had the ambition to try and learn this piece....yeah that didn't last long. Uber difficult.
Same here. I really tried but it's impossible. We're used to phrases starting and finishing, this is basically endless overlapping phrases

Great rendition of this great music
Beautifully executed
I keep having the same issue with all of Katsaris recordings of the Beethoven symphonies. They are marvelously played and show a deep knowledge of the music. BUT you have to remember that these were the first complete recordings of these Liszt transcriptions. And instead of presenting them as is, he felt compelled to add to them and include stuff from the orginals that Liszt didn't transcribe.
I'm not opposed to that idea on principle, but those were the first recordings, and as such they should have presented to the world what Liszt wrote, and not what Katsaris thought what Liszt should have written.
If you want a complete recording that is faithful to Liszt's text you have to go to Sherbakov. And that one came out more than 20 years after Katsaris.
Is he playing a bossendorfer imprerial? 1:56 those bass notes add crazy
Yes
@@Bohh574 Are you sure or do you have a source for this ? He usually plays C. Bechstein and I'm looking for this information for a long time
@@robin36mac i read somewhere that he chose the Bosendorfer precisely for the bass and tremolos
If i am not mistaken, Katsaris added few arrangements of his own, from time to time

Liszt arranged Beethoven symphonies for piano so more people could hear them in some form. The French built the first orchestra to play Beethoven symphonies, It still exists.
Very good rendition by C.Katsaris. F. Liszt's transcription abilities at their best. He used every possible "pianistic" mean to express Beethoven's dynamism, but I think this work was destined to be performed by the orchestra. Especially, the initial timpani repeated phrase "pa.pa.ram" can't be played by the piano.
Still it's an amazing arrangement and a beautiful execution

That's how I first discovered this masterpiece haha

where can I get the score's pdf file?
I used the PDF found at IMSLP.org. Here's a link: goo.gl/XoY5CC
Try setting up your monitor in front of your instrument and reading off the monitor.
You can get it on en.instr.scorser or imslp.org. instr.scorser is free, though. Use IMSLP if you have it.
